Specific freq for specific app? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi there
Im currently playing clash of clam on my galaxy nexus. But i was worried because the game causes my phone to be extremely hot in less than 5 minutes. (Its felt likebu sunbath ur phone)
I notice that its not the battery that heating. Its the component above the battery, just below the camera.
I thought it must be the processor overheat due to the game overdemands.
(Seriously, other game that uses data doesnt cause similar problem)
So, is there any apps that can control specific frequency towards specific apps?
I want to try set the frequency for clash of clan to 800mhz and hope that the problem be solved.

[Q] Is overheating still present in Jelly Bean?

I remember reading somewhere that it was a software not hardware problem so JB could have a fix for it.
I've never had an overheating problem. I also don't recall many having that problem.

Overheating? I've never had any of my phones overheat, on GB, ICS or JB.
Are people really having serious overheating (as in phone crashing or shutting down from heat) on a stock device? I have a feeling anyone overheating on ICS is running a custom ROM with voltage changes or overclocks.
My GNex on AOKP and stock voltages does overheat while, for example, playing Modern Combat 3.
Ok maybe overheat is a wrong term a bit since it never crashed or force closed. It just gets fairly hot in the area above camera.
And I'm asking people who did have the problem and upgraded to JB.
My GNex does seem to be running hotter than normal on JB than ICS but not by much. No serious overheating problems at all.

Getting hot and overheating are completely different. The phone gets hot where the battery and processor are, that's just how its going to be, especially when playing 3D games.

No no, my battery stays fairly cool (39 celsius degrees) but the area above camera compared to that is really hot. Way too hot than I think it should be. My previous phone - HD2 was never that hot unless I overclocked it.

Around the camera is where the processor etc. is. The HD2 is also severely less powerful than the Galaxy Nexus.
My cdma nexus doesnt seem to get as hot. I havent really noticed it as much as i did on ICS.
I've been getting overheating since Jelly Bean. Keep in mind that google "improved" things by ramping the CPU up when the screen is touched, even if it's to do a simple task that doesn't require full CPU power... this might exacerbate the overheating issue if you're actively using your device.
Way less then usual. Maybe 50% less. when it does it gets a bit hotter.
So in conclusion I think it's better at this job then ics.

It doesn't ramp it to full clock speed, it ramps it up one step, or two, whatever.
Ramping it up to full speed on every touch would murder the battery.

I've tested it. It ramps one CPU to full clock speed when you move your finger around the screen.
Try it yourself. I wish I could turn that feature off since using Swype has now become an issue...

While on ICS, it'd get up to around 70°C. Now on JB, it usually tops at around somewhere in the 60s°C.

galaxy nexus cpu throttling on jelly bean?

hi there i got a used galaxy nexus from someone and installed android me 4.1.1 (version 1.6)
now my problem is, when playing intense graphic games (GTA III or dead trigger) i notice the fps drop and rise in the game.
At first I thought the game itself was lagging due to too much happening on screen (such as more characters) but it was not the case.
The game would be silky smooth for 10 seconds then choppy fps for the next 30 seconds... rise and repeat..
it seems the cpu keeps underclocking/overclocking itself... i even tried force closing all my apps before running the game and it helped with the fps a bit but the throttling is still there....
anyone had any similar issues and knows how to fix it?
edit: forgot to add, does your phone get really hot behind the LED FLASH when gaming? Mine gets really hot even on the screen too (On that side of the phone away from the battery)
Stock rom? custom rom?
sorry its custom rom (android me version 1.6 july 29th)
although i briefly remember this happening on the stock rom too so I don't think its a rom issue...
hard to say i can't post in the developer section yet... so i guess here to find out if people are having issues with the stock?
stock kernel if that makes a difference
Wow am I the only one with these symptoms? Hot screen and lagging frame rates? Since no one is replying maybe my CPU has cooling problems? Bit there is no fan haha

Any news about your problem? I have the same problem with jelly beans stock. Playing the game agent dash when the nexus is cold is fine when it is warm slows down, like a drop performance. How did you solve it? excuse my English

Try putting the graphics for the game on low
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
same problem also there are many persons with this problem.I'm on stock 4.1.1
If the CPU runs hot ( > 64 degrees Celsius), thermal throttling will kick in by reducing CPU clock speed. Works as designed.
You're not the only one who faces this problem - I face it on the stock ROM. The only way to alleviate this issue (not entirely, but to quite an extent) is to overclock your GPU - which means using another kernel that's clocked at 384mhz... which, for me, seems to break VPN (at least it breaks it on Air Kernel - Faux works for a while, then stalls... I don't know the nitty gritty, but that's what seems to happen - YMMV).
I had a thought: what if we enabled GPU acceleration in the developer options and then played it - do you think that'll make a difference? It does, generally speaking, make a difference to the other programs (apart from breaking some )

[Q] nova 3 lag overheat build prop sugestion request

Im using my new note 2 n7100 to play nova 3 from the play store on stock 4.1.2 the game randomly lags on some levels and
Heats the phone and screen. Restarting the phone makes it smooth again for few mins. Can anyone recomend a build prop i can use
For a better experince or config?
Mc4 lags a bit but is mostly smooth, im not using any extra apps im not rooted ram minimum use is at 533mb. thanks for the help

Sorry my friend, a build prop will not work as such, the problem is the power required to run the game persistently at 30fps or 60fps.... ^__^
I have that problem with Vice City... Hot as Hell ^__^
I dont mind the heat so much but is it possible the cpu is being downclocked due to heat? Because there is sudden lag spike
But goes to normal smooth gameplay after restart. Does overheating cause this problem in nova3 and is there any way to prevent downclocking?
Nova is a gameloft game and most gameloft games aren't optimized for our Samsung Android phones. I play modern combat 4 and it doesn't run smooth most of the time. Compared to ios, which is highly optimized for gameloft games, it plays like a sideshow.
Contact gameloft and complain. It's all we can do.

Try undervolting if you think its the cpu throttling. ..
Helps
But not the heat though. ...
Has to be some heat
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
I put set cpu to run at 700mhz the game ran fine with the same lag spikes and the heat was the same. So i guess the heat is from the ram if thts possible. Its a cool phone but i wish it could stay warm and play gloft games smoothly . Im not a fan of the iphone screen or ui but i guess i have to get one. Iv written to gameloft about dark knight, wild blood and nova3 lag issues perhaps they would look into it.
On a side note is there a note 2 compatable version of 9mm?
Ok iv figured out the issue. The problem isnt so much with game its the cpu. At every lag spike the the temp has hit 60 degrees and the cpu downclock or throttle has caused the lag. Iv posted on the q n a thread for suggestion to stop throttling. Sadly this will happen in all 3d games to some extent due to the thiness of the device.

Try using a custom kernel to undervolt or even underclock. While underclocking might not seem that much of a good idea, underclocking by say 100mhz might stop the phone from throttling (which downclocks to 800mhz) so it might be worth it. Personally I can run most games at 1.6GHz without any throttling (which for me happens at 70 degrees using Perseus)
I do not know your enviroments degree that may change the way the phone behaves. Right now it is freezing outside and 22 Celcius the room. I have no CPU backing down due to the thermal conditions even after playing Nova 3 like 40-50 mins. I normally use my phone locked at 1200 Mhz Max since it is more than enough with 640Mhz GPU but I have been using it at 1600 Mhz CPU with 533Mhz GPU and there is a little more heat on the camera side. Still it is tolerable for both my hand and the device itself. No lag so far.
Thanks for the reply im in southern chennai which is pretty similar to a summer in california. Im not sure how to downclock the gpu but the phone screen near the camera becomes really hot while gaming nova 3 or mc4. The temp shows as 56 degrees c. Iv a hard time touching the screen near the camera at tht point. The back is still ok. In india samsung does not give out refunds or exchanges so i hope there is some sort of fix for the screen heat.

Can the (my) nexus keep up with today's game?

Hi all
i am not really a huge fan of mobile gaming but i do play them every now and then
i recently tried playing NFS most wanted and the lag ...is unbearable i did some gaming mods but it only helped in a few levels
( my governor was set to performance( 1728 ) and no apps are in the background )
so i tried another game real racing 3 and my nexus would just shut down and i am forced to remove the battery in order to start my phone which really makes me sad
so the question is can the nexus keep up with the games today? are there some mods i can do in order to play these high end game?
i am using
cm10.1 nightly with xperia skin
franco kernel
The GPU in the GN is never, nor will be, a decent performer for demanding games. Mods and tweaks will only help to an extent.
And overclocking it to 1.7 and lock it to the max freq like what you're doing right now wouldn't really help either, it would only throttle the CPU constantly down like crazy, and will affect performance. I'd say stay away (from OCing it like that, that is).
I agree gaming sux on gnex but it also sux on gslll which has quadcore , game developers just don't know how yo make a game run well on android especially Gameloft an EA for example even though our hardware is more than capable, blame the game developers which always seem to neglect android devices over apple devices, even a quad core LG Nexus 4 an Samsung galaxy Slll has lag an stutter with games so its purley the game developers fault, wouldn't matter what hardware you had they still stuff it up, best thing to do is not buy games unless you read the reviews so these developers don't make any money until they start producing what's expected.

AW: Can the (my) nexus keep up with today's game?
I agree. Huge games like real racing 3 lag on my device. I set graphics quality to low and have my cpu at 1,35 and gpu at 512 MHz but races with more than 4 cars at once suck
Anyways its not intended to be a mobile gaming console and I'm very happy with it

when i went home a while ago i charged my phone because of the low battery. and after like 10minutes of charging my phone is really really hot.
51 degrees Celsius as i remembered. until now i don't know what's the problem. my phone overheats when i turn it on and also while charging.
help me guys i don't know what's happening on my phone :\

Overheat during charging is normal, Also overheat can come if you use lot of procesor power ie intensive 3D games (subway surfer, minions rush, and we will not talk about asphalt, dungeon hunter etc) small games but is very intensive on impact of proc.

Well that depends how your proc is set.
Noop, deadline, on demand.. They all act dif.
Your max mhz maybe is 1.7 or even more, but current maybe a way lower then on stock kernel because of difrent mods and handling.

Possible way of resolving the problem
Hey mate! I've seen this problem before, and mostly it's because you installed a rom wrong. Try installing the rom again via cwm or twrp, and do an absolute FULL WIPE... format the system, data, cache, delete cache, delete dalvik cache etc and make sure you install the rom properly, that way you shouldn't have this problem anymore hope it works! Come back with feedback

it may be device specific
i have 2 Xperia S, and One Heats up when charging, my other doesnt,
-XS 01 no heating issues at all (max 1836MHz Clock)
-XS 02 Charging heat, Heat issue even when not overclocked, youtube Heating issues, (weird), Max 1728MHz Clock
Other info
Both Devices Use SAME ROM And kernel,Both Devices Were purchased from same place,
XS 01 is Older then XS 02, by 4 months
Try reducing Max frequency using Kernel Tuner.. And use different governors.. Like Ondemand for CPU0 and Conservative for CPU1.. This combination has made my phone stay cooler enough even after half hour of gaming.. Even with Asphalt8 and NFSMW.. And lower your Max Freq to 1.4 or 1.2.. 1.3 will be same as 1.5.. I mean in terms of heating..
