New to roms - Sprint LG Optimus G

Hello everyone! I am really new to flashing roms and as such know very little about them. I hope everyone here can give some advice on which to use.
I got away from the stock rom because it was ugly as sin, seemed to be battery hungry, and so restricted.
What I'm looking for in a rom is improved battery life over stock, improved speed, useful features baked right in like halo, and the ability to make it look exactly the way I want without having to install a 3rd party launcher, and last but not least working 3g/4g would be nice.
Currently I'm useing cm 10.2 nightly. I like the power savings, the speed, and my data works. But I would like a halo like feature and a bit more room for customization.
Thank you in advance for any tips you can give!

Welcome to the forums and the Optimus G! You've made yourself a great choice getting this phone
Glad to see you are already rooted and ROM'd as well. A good ROM for customization would be either Beanstalk, Carbon ROM, Dirty Unicorns, AOKP, etc. Pretty much every ROM that isn't CM will give you good customization options. And I know that Carbon has working Halo too.
I've been saying this everywhere on the forums, and I'm gonna say it here; if you can find some of the old 4.2.2 ROMs, I suggest you give those a whirl. The only real bug with 4.2.2 ROMs is camera autofocus. It requires a workaround with a script. But those ROMs are solid as ever and have really good battery life, way better than 4.3 in my honest opinion. And the newer stock based LG ROMs are better than ever as well. Amazing battery life and super smooth performance with those.
So, to be honest, you really can't go wrong with any of the ROMs floating around here. Get to downloading and figure out what you like Just remember to frequently make backups of your ROMs in TWRP (ESPECIALLY a stock ROM for prl/profile purposes) before going on flashing sprees, just in case something goes wrong. This is also one of the nicest Android communities I've ever been a part of, so please don't be afraid to ask in the threads for help with whatever you need. We're all like one big family here.
Cheers!

I personally am stuck on AOKP 4.3 (Build 9/11)
Haven't flashed a ROM in almost a month, Im pretty content

Awesome! Thanks guys for the info. A lot of good info to consider. Any idea where I might find the 4.2 roms? I just was looking around the Internet and could only find links to 4.3 based roms.
As far as a back up of my original stock rom I was foolish and didn't back it up. I have been reading a bit about updating my prl and such, to be honest it seems a bit daunting.
My question is, why can't there just be a button to it like in Stock roms, but on every rom. Seems like it should be easy for the devs to put one in considering how smart they are.

Oh, I have been reading up on pac rom and carbon rom. Maybe I'm missing something but on the surface they seems the same but with different names. What's the difference between the two?

Check out spleef's goo.im account. He has all of the 4.2 ROMs there, and there's a CM10.1 (4.2.2) thread as well with CM10.1 nightlies still being pushed. And to update the profile/prl is actually quite easy. When in stock ROM, simply go to system settings > system updates, and all the options are right there. Connect to your wifi, and update your stuff. Really simple. It IS possible to update profile/prl from AOSP, but to be honest, I've only ever seen that feature on one ROM only, and that was the Helly Bean ROM back on my old Samsung Epic 4G. Like I said, I've only ever seen that feature on just that ROM, so maybe it was either broken, or worthless lol.
As far as the differences go between Carbon and PAC, it is true that those ROMs have a lot of the same customization options, but I'm guessing the real differences are made under the hood. To be quite honest, I don't know why, but I actually haven't even ran a PAC ROM on this phone yet. I really don't know why, lol. Maybe all the options are just too overwhelming for me. I like for my AOSP ROMs to be simple, but with some options.

Ok cool, thanks for the reply! Looks like I'm going to have to temp flash a stock based rom to update prl/profile. I'm using Cm touch recovery. How good is its back up feature? If it even has one.

Do you mean ClockWorkMod touch recovery? I never used that on this phone. TWRP recovery is much more superior for this device.

Yeah ClockworkMod touch recovery. Lol I wish I would of known that before I paid for the touch recovery. Oh well, at least the money help support some talented devs.
Parden all the noob questions but what is the difference between the two recoveries?

Wait wait, you PAID for the recovery?? Errrrmmm... Sorry to say, but you kinda wasted your money, lol. I mean, its good that you supported the developer, but.... Yeah, you totally didn't have to pay for it, lol.
The difference between the two is, I think, that our devices just "prefers" TWRP. I mean, if CWM is working for you flawlessly, then great. No need to switch. But there's been cases were flashing ROMs and kernels with CWM just doesn't work properly. Why, I don't know. Maybe its something within the coding, or the device itself conflicts with the recovery, but TWRP is the way to go, and has now, at least I think, universally replaced CWM as the standard recovery for most Android devices across the board recently.
But like I said, if CWM is working for you with no issues, then stick with that!

I am somewhat new to them also but I will chime in. anything I have used I got from the site so you can find it or more current there.
Beanstalk - this has TONS of customization you can change just about everything. battery life is much better than stock. built on 4.3 - the keyboard is miles better than stock! has HALO built in <- I did not use it
Carbon - good ROM about the same as above, but not quite the adjust ability. battery life was good.
Optimized - built on the stock 4.1.2 battery life was amazing. with it sitting there just doing status checks no browsing it lost 2% in 6 hours!! my cell data dropped out and I could not get it back so I had to reflash (went back to beanstalk)

I am digging beanstalk. I have flashed most of the ROMs and it hits a nice middle ground between cm and pacman.

Wow still getting replies! This truly is an awesome community. Ty everyone. I have tried pac man but had a big problem, all icons and widget kept vanishing behind the wallpaper. Currently using carbon, I like it except I'm getting battery life on par with the stock rom and my screen flickers often. Next I will be trying Beanstalk rom.

Something to keep in mind... I recently discovered through attempting to force my way into using 4.3 that you WILL NOT be able to use the dialer codes when you get away from 4.1... Ex: ##72786#, ##MRL#, etc.

Just gonna ask here (so I don't have to make a new thread too) if I root the G, will I lose all data on internal storage?

Besides, the roms we have are awesome and are constantly developed and improved.
We have some fantastic devs here!
Not sure what you're looking for op, but a good deal of the mods I can think of are already incorporated into many of the roms.

I can kinda see where the OP is coming from. On the G2X forums the stock roms were very very customized. These are all "tweaked" stock roms with little difference between the many... based off different bases, and have "build prop" tweaks and "init.d" tweaks, animations and so on. The att section has truly optimized and custom stock roms.
I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining cause I use aokp and cm10 mostly. But it'd be nice to have the extremely custom stock options like att users got.

With JellyBean around the corner, it will kinda slim for awhile, like the above post, all are stable that are there, and well maintained. I agree good devs here....

You and I both know a ton of customization was required to make the G2x usable. That is not the case with the GS3.

True. I'm also coming from the G2x and even tho we did I tend to stay closer to stock because I actually like tw. I will occasionally flash cm nightly just for ****s and giggles.

I don't mean customization for stability. I mean like whitehawkX edt tweaks and such. ATT roms have skipping tracks via long press on volume rocker and such. We have good stuff but it'd be awesome to have more options then different color stock roms. Most of the stuff I want is flashable any ways. Just a little rant... I'm just happy this thing is stable no matter what haha.

I wasn't trying to complain a lot. It was mainly what the above poster said. Just not a lot of variety like some phones have. Don't get me wrong, we have some of the best devs on the sgs3. I just like more options though
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
In my opinion OP Android is maturing and the devices are much more usable than they once were with now just minor annoyances now.. There will be more development soon but the GS3 is enjoyable stock with tweaks for now... Such was the case with the OG Vibrant when Team Whiskey and Eugene tweaked and enhanced stock Twiz and the dev scene for that device took off and is still prevalent with the Vibrant being one of the first devices to run a stable JB... As a matter of fact because of devices like the Vibrant we have many of the staple dev names we see amongst many threads amongst many forums and for several devices including this one, for example Whitehawkx, Annex and others..
Stay tuned as I suspect it is going to be fun..
Those devs aren't focusing on TW at all. They have cm10 and variants to do and kernels to work on. Things are especially going to die down for a little with JellyBeen coming around the corner.

If you want features of an AT&T ROM flash an AT&T ROM.. what's stopping you? They work fine if you set up the APNs correctly. I mean look at the i9100 forums. There's so many ROMs there but all of the touchwiz ROMs differ in what, a few build.prop lines and a theme? I'm not trying to attack you I just am not understanding what exactly you or OP are asking for. I understand some features aren't in our ROMs but like I said, flash an AT&T one if you want that feature. Or flash CM10, we have that feature

You said you mostly use CM10/AOKP but you won't flash an AT&T ROM because of no WiFi calling? You can set up WiFi calling on any ROM you want. I do it on CM10. Sure it is roundabout and not T-Mobile WiFi calling but it's still free and still WiFi calling.

Good answer. Seriously. All of the stocks only differ by a color here and a icon there. Running the Cm10 nightlies, and seeing the new additions and fixes is what I'm impressed with. I am sure soon, we will see more roms being done with the cm10 base and others. My daily, is CM10 period. Seen enough of the stock stuff. HTC MyTouch took awhile, but was flooded later with some good roms.

Can someone explain cyanogenmod

What is the point of using cyanogenmod over stock? I've tried researching for a answer and nothing comes up. Does anyone care to explain what all the hype about cyanogenmod and using it over stock + root
Like per say if it improves overall proformence of the s3 on a battery and stability basis then ill be sold to give it a try

Hmm well the major benefit is getting to use AOSP. Which is stock android as google intended (ie like the galaxy nexus), none of the samsung touchwiz stuff. Other benefit for now being that its jellybean. Im sure people here can come up with a laundry list of reasons for why cm is better than stock but those are the two main that would probably come into anyones head.
its straight build from the android source, no touchwiz sense etc.. a google experience lol
Those and a whack of in-built customization at your disposal

For the sheer thrill of it. Because you can. To experiment and learn. I allot of times don't need to know nothing about an OS to at least try it. People waste hundreds of man hours to create this stuff. Try it out. See what they spent all their time to create. Happy hacking!

Reasons I use any ROM over stock (features vary ROM to ROM)
Change songs with Volume rocker
Built in WiFi tethering
No Bloatware
There are other things I look for in a ROM but unfortunately CM does not include any of those (e.g. app password lock built into system and cannot be removed)

My story, I had the original Galaxy S Captivate from AT&T and as my contract was close to running out I decided to finally put a custom ROM on my phone since it was slow getting updated. After a while I ended up with CM. It was a huge improvement over the old stock rom (even with the updates they had managed to get out). Fast forward to this weekend I finally bit the bullet and decided to upgrade to a new phone so I got an S3. My first thought upon turning on the phone was "omg this is terrible!".
Samsung's touch wiz basically is where they take the newest versions of Android and try to force it to work like the older version (presumably so that all their phones work the same). So the first thing I did on getting home is spend time getting CM installed on it and I haven't looked back. You lose some of the Samsung apps but most of them are useless anyway but you gain a better experience.

Finally rooted my phone, now its time for a better OS... any suggestions?

It took me a while, but I finally rooted my phone to get rid of the bloatware and to be able to install an ad blocker, now I'm wondering what good OS's there are out there so far? In the past with my Epic 4G, I spent a lot of time trying different OS's and ended up quite frustrated, though mostly because I never really found one I was that happy with and ended up in a situation where I changed OS's so much that I didn't even bother to customize my phone anymore because it would just be a couple of days before I had to start over again. This time around I figured I'd ask the peanut gallery first to get some informed opinions rather than just installing random OS after random OS. I'm looking for something lean, efficient, and stable. Also, and I'm not sure if this is an issue with the S3 like it was with the Epic 4G, but if there are things like CIQ that need to be removed, I would want those features as well.
Thanks.

I actually meant is there a second vote for the rom, but this does bring up another point and that is that I'd prefer something without much theming. I like Jellybean, but I want something that has had all of the bloat stripped away and all of the beneficial tweaks for performance and battery life already in place.

Go with liquid smooth!!! It's 4.2.1 and very stable even though it's still beta. I am running it as my everyday rom, no problems. Considerably less buggy than the cm10.1 nightlies. (my favorite part is that it has group mms)

So how do I install this thing, just flash from recovery? Freeza didn't give any instructions...

Paranoid android vs aokp

So I've been doing some reading on these two roms and I have to say, I like the layout and app settings available in paranoid android. But aokp seems to have a bigger following . I just regrettably flashed jedi xx last night . Love his roms, but I hate wiping and setting everything up again. Can anyone tell me which of the 2 roms they like and why? Appreciate your input!

I went back to JediXX and couldn't be happier; considering problems that are still lurking in AOSP/AOKP - 4.2.x still too buggy for me. I'd wait till all the kinks are resolved.

Jedi-XX is definitely a great rom, MUCH faster than what i was using before (Jedi-x3 i think). But I am being heavily seduced by Paranoid android, aokp, and now a new one has caught my eye.... Rootbox (formerly jellybam).

They all have little kinks but.
I like theme chooser.
4.1.2 vs 4.2.2
No Samsung crap
Voodoo sound
Full AOSP

I've decided to give carbon a try and in all honesty I don't see any benefit of it vs jedi/tw roms. Camera has no low light option, and its rather important to me; call audio is just terrible, scratchy. Besides, i like all that Samsung "crap".
I guess it's the "Return of The Jedi" for me

Well I tried flashing them all. And to my dismay, there is a BIG problem. I can't download any apps until I clear the play store and download manager. Then I have to download them all manually. Which I would do, but then it doesn't tlet me re download my purchased apps for free... Deal breaker. Which sucks because I prefer their rom features. Don't care for the s pen or Samsung stuff

I love carbon, aokp and paranoid android for asthetics but the leck of solid bluetooth connectivity coupled with my preference for the default samsung keyborad has made me go back to jedi roms. If they manage to iron out the bluetooth issues ill flash those and never look back. but since i use bluetooth ALOT for calls and music, not so much

Different strokes. I like being on the latest version of Android and Wolfson audio is better than anything out there. I have no call issues. I have had 3 Nexus devices b4 this one. I prefer AOSP.
If I want a new theme I have a choice of hundreds and I don't have to flash it. Don't have to flash every little UI mod.

Are you using a custom DPI? That can cause market issues. I just stick with the standard
I think there is a modded playstore out there that does not have the issues.

No i wanted to let it all finish before changing the UI. I got it working though. I edited my build.Prop to show that I have a t889 instead of the n7105. I haven't head ant troubles so far. I have no idea why I had to do this and others have not, but it works. Took me all night to get it to work lol. Going to bed now, will play with the ROM when I wake and report back

it tells you how to disable to soft buttons in the thread. you go into interface and make it "0"
I'm running Task650 AOKP on my S4 and I love it!!! I wish it did have some features Paranoid Android has but I am about 97% satisfied.
I'm thinking about flashing the GE Rom but i'm not sure I want to lose all the extra features that I get with a custom ROM.
Make sure you read the change logs and all the features to make sure its what you want.
Try Moon Rom version 1....touchwiz, floating windows, and tablet and Hanley mode...n7105 Rom working great on T-Mobile...I'm also using devil kernel and recovery dual boot, so I can choose my paranoid Rom on the fly when I want to.... best of both worlds...

Considering the Optomus G pro but...

Hey guys thinking of upgrading to this phone and I love the look, feel, and features of this phone, but it doesn't look like you guys have much going on in the way of development? I'd be coming from the Samsung Infuse, so I'm a bit spoiled, when the phone was newer lots of developers were building and porting custom roms, and currently there are about 4 variations of updated (Android 4.1+) roms in development. Currently I'm on Beanstalk for the Infuse (android 4.3) which is a great rom with tons of customization.
I wouldn't mind learning and developing myself but with the apparent shortness of developers this could be slow going. Am I missing something here, is there just not a lot of development because this is a relatively new device, or is it a hard or impossible device to hack?

I came from the note 1 so I know the feeling...but I gotta tell you the stock software is really that good...I don't really miss any of my custom roms I use to run..the only thing I do miss is my theme on the theme engine.
Once cm10 gets closer we may see more since most roms are based off it but who knows.
I wouldn't expect development like what you're use to but like I said I don't miss it at all..
Hopefully the Nexus 5 will have a 5" screen like the rumors suggest and I can finally get a nexus device.
Yeah there a cm10.1 thats almost a daily. Pretty much everything works just a few bugs. There are repositories for a slimbean 4.3 on github but idk how far along that is as there been no release. And over in android forums there a guy working on a stock debloated deodexed rom and the bootloaders only been bypassed for a month or so. It took a while to get it unlocked but development has been goin pretty well since then. Just gonna take time.

So now that the bootloader has been cracked, we should see some more development soon I'd think? I'm just surprised this isn't a more popular device, the specs on it are bad ass.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
Well like mrdsl said cm10 is the base for many of the good rom anyway and its almost done so I would expect to see development pick up soon. Especially as att keeps dropping the price makeing this easily the cheapest snapdragon600 device making it very appealing to many more people we should see the community for this phone grow a lot.

Not cracked, just bypassed makes a world of difference and according to what I've been told from LG reps they have no plans on unlocking the bootloader or releasing any source code

I enjoy mine and it's running stock but rooted. I've been able to do what I want with just root like getting rid of pesky qslides bar. It's cool but I don't use it and the apps are still there so ya. If you get this phone you'll enjoy it. Either way good luck with whatever you choose!
IMHO, a phone that good, stock rom is good enough!
Stock ROM of Gpro is great.....and optimized.
I didnt miss CM or PA at all.
Exactly . Best rom by any android company released

I agree .. it's a good stock rom. I would have to say most people install roms to improve performance but even on the Note2 I had I wasn't installing roms like I did in the past on every device prior.. and in fact this G pro benchmarks about 60 to 100 percent faster than the Note2 in most ... and so far it's been the fastest, slickest device I've used by far. I'm using Apex Launcher for customizing .. and at this point my phone looks like stock Android 4.3 and runs lightning quick.. and battery life has been stellar. And I'm liking and using the quicknote dedicated button! Only thing I miss about my note2 is kinda the S-pen and the inky blacks(contrast)
I have own a lot of Samsung devices...starting from s2 to s4 and I change my s4 for this device because I didn't feel I big upgrade from s3...of course I miss switching rooms but I can tell you that this phone is a lot quicker than many phone out there...the G pro is a lot more responsive than my wife note 2 and what I love about this phone is BATTERY this monster last the whole day

Stock is good, but modded roms are better. that's my option. Because the stock rom is so perfect, we're hailing the rom, but we better make sure that doesn't offend the developers. Even it is perfect, it is still 4.1, we will need 4.2/4.3 roms very soon, and LG won't catch up with our interest. So, we better appreciate what developers are trying now. Pls don't say we don't want mod roms.
For me, I just have one request to the devs, whatever you do, pls make sure the Quick Remote is in your rom, coz I'm already obsessed with it so much. now I can control everything around me with my phone.
