Okay Fellas I need help with the basics.
I have a Galaxy Note 3. I successfully rooted it using the guidance provided here by the members. I also put clockworkmod revoery on the phone.
I am attempting to use clockwork mod to download zip files from my computer onto my external SD card and then install the included programs onto my phone. Everything works with me using Samsung Kies to detect my phone on my computer. I downloaded the zip files and UNZIPPED them first. I then used Kies to transfer the unzipped files onto my phone. I then used Clockwork mod and hit install zip. Next I selected install from external SD card and I see the unzipped files in clockwork. But everytime I select the files Clockwork tells me there are no files available, yet it is showing me the files. Essentially I am getting a reading of no content on the unzipped files I am being shown inb Clockwork.
Maybe the mistake i am making is I am not supposed to be unzipping the files before uploading them to my phone. Should they stay as zipped files when I transfer them or am I right in unzipping them forst on the computer.
I have been struggling with trying to get Clockwork to install the files for two days. Maybe you guys can tell me what basic steps that I am missing
Thanks so much
No need to unzip

ok i have the evo i am on a stock rooted 2.2 but i cant seem to figure out how to flash the custom rom. i have followed all of the steps but when i go to install rom from sd card and click on the rom i want to install i do not get the option to back up and wip etc... it goes to folders like system/ data and meta.....wtf is this y isnt it working?????? help me
Did you leave the rom in a zip file?
i tried downloading it on my mac and transferring it over and from my phone and the files download in a folder containing seperate folders. but when i download it says zip though
should be 1 file 'whateverROMname.zip' and it needs to be in root (not in sub folder) of sd card.
its on the root im compressing the files into zips now then ima see if it works

Why are you zipping? the file you downloaded should be in .zip formant already. Just drag and drop that .zip file on your card.
Try rom manager from the market, it works great, it has some updated roms pre installed or you can download to sd card, very simple to use, for a noob like me.
when i downloaded it it wasnt it was in folders. ok i just went through the steps then after backing up and everything it took me to the recovery screen i selected reboot device and it brought my **** back to the standard rom wtf
Here is how i do it.
1. Download Rom (the zipped file)
2. Put on SD card
3. Reboot into Recovery
4. Install zip from sd card option
5 Choose zip from sd card
6.Choose the zip file you put on sd card in step 2
5. Reboot
Lmk if this helps
I am not a noob, but am a noob to Android on the Epic. I've been ok on my Vibrant, but I am trying to assist a friend on installing Mobile AP or Wireless Tether on the Epic.
I have read all of the docs., but all seem to skip the point of how to install the apk. On the Vibrant, I can copy the zip files right to the internal sd, and reboot into clockwork recovery, and install from there. With the Epic, not so.
Apks are installed thru the file explore or astro.
What about .zip installs? Do I have to rename the files to update.zip for clockwork receover to see it at boot? It doesn't have browse, like the Vibrant.
clockworkmod needs to be install first before you can browse zip files
Yes, thanks, that worked for the .apk, but what about the .zip installs that are flash installed via recovery, such as MobileAP, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756804.
For example, when I copied the 'mobileap' .zip installation file to the sd card, rebooting into clockwork recovery, it does not see the it. It only see's a previously used, update.zip file.

I have installed clockwork mod.
boot into clockworkmod recovery, select install zip from sd card, and then select your zip file.
Every time i try to flash a rom i get a error that says
E:Cant find update script
Using Amon Ra recovery. Wiped everything and partitioned sd card.
Thanks for any help
Sounds like the update package is not signed with valid keys. Is your phone rooted ?

check your zip. If you zip a file two folders deep it will give the same error. open your zip and see if you see your files or another folder.
yeah when i unzip it, the first folder i see is the name of the rom "fresh" then when i open it, I see; boot image file, data folder, META-INF folder, sdcard folder, and system folder.
Well update script is in META-INF\com\google\android but if your zip file is not signed then it can't be flasshed that is why you get upgrade script not found.
How do i do that????? And walk me through what "signed" means
And im using a macbook pro if that helps any
Thanks a ton
Well did unziped the zip folder ? Did you make any changes to the installation zip ?
Now what rom are you running. So you have root ? When you use connectbot and type su deo you see #? It could be that your phone is not ruter and does not have proper recovery installed since we can't sign rom with the same keys that developers at sprint use we have to root the phone and allow it to accept custom rom.
all i did was download the fresh rom from the forum onto my computer, compressed it (zipped it) then rebooted my phone into recovery, wiped everything i needed to, enabled the usb, moved the zip over to the phone, disabled the usb and then went to flash zip, found the zipped fresh rom and tried to flash it.
Im running my stock rom that came with the phone.
If you running this on mac the os x will unzip ypur file and put the download file in trash so use zip file from trash. Now You need to use simple root to root and install proper recovery on your phone then you will be able to install custom rom .
Awesome! found the zip file in the trash like you said, transfered that over and it worked! thank you thank you thank you!
I'm wondering if I'm doing this the best way. To download themes and roms, I have been using my home computer to download the files to the desktop. Then connecting my phone to the computer as a storage device and copying the files to the root directory of the sd card. Then I disconnect the phone and power it off. 3 finger into cwm and apply zip from sd card.
Can I download the zips straight to my phone from the xda site? I have started to try that and the only thing I see so far is that the files end up in the "download" folder on the sd card. That shouldn't be a problem should it? I just have to navigate there when choosing the zip to apply, correct?
Thanks.

Wrong section, but yes you can dl on your phone, that's how I've been doing it for a while now. I use es file explorer to cut the zips and put them on the sdcard, by themselves. You can also just go to the dl folder in cwm if you like.......I don't, but it's up to you.

Sorry, I was thinking the question applied to themes but I guess your right, I should have probably put it in the Q&A section, obviously!
(I'm still a newbie)
Thanks. I'm downloading a couple files now and I'll try it.
Np, dl'ing files from the phone is really nice, especially with 4G and a fast host. I also enjoy the standalone aspect of mobile hacking. Not tied to pc to do pretty much anything you want is awesome......epic freedom!!!
I download right from my phone too. Usually, I'll throw on 4G or wifi to download. Then cut/paste the file to the root on my sdcard. It's a lil more convenient; espcially when I'm away from my computer and I want to flash something.
Moved to Q&A
I like using the computer, just because I keep all the files as backup, including the stock stuff to get back to if needed.
well, I downloaded the latest Sydicate Frozen Rom standard version and Bionix Blackout straight to the phone and flashed them from the download folder. Fantastic!
I also download every rom and theme straight to my phone. I have a Mac so when I download on my Mac it always unzips the file so my phone is the best for also.

okay guys this is my first android phone, first time rooting, first time for all of it basically.
i have a galaxy s3 i747m that i managed to root already. now i downloaded a ROM that i want and using android file exchange( I AM ON A MAC MAYBE MY PROBLEM?)
so i found the file on my mac, opended file exchange, put the file on my SD card.
now when i go into ROM manager i go to "install ROM from SD card" but it shows me everything thats on my phone not my SD card....i looked everywhere but the file is not there and i cant figure out why its doing this.
so i thought maybe if i save it to my phone i can find it,so i did that and i found the ROM file, but now when i open the file it just shows me
META-INF/ and system/ but on my computer it shows me something called BOOT.IMG.
im guessing this is the part of the file i need since nothing else works?

DON'T touch this boot.img you taklking about.
Can you cannect phone by USB to your mac? ( sorry i'm PC guy). If you do just go open your phone with explorer in you mac then create folder on SD card "ROMS" in example , copy downloaded rom from your mac to phone this way you will know where it is. Now if you did not install CWM (clockwork mod recovery) install one from Rom Manager and reboot in it. Choose install from card and find roms folder you created and rom you copied in to folder choose this rom. Now follow instruction.
BTW. Before you start flashing roms READ more anthill you sure you know how is done for 100%. There are so many info how this should be done. READ this first :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725839 Twice if you have to.
Good luck
