Here are a few boot animations that I created in the event of me getting bored. All of these have been tested on my Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570, and hence are compatible with any 240x320 resolution Android device. The list may get updated daily, or not change for months together. Depends on how busy I am. And also, this post may rarely get an andy or cid animation.

Boot animations using time lapse video from the International Space Station. This is my first boot animation. I've tested it on two Gnexus phones, both running different versions of AOKP. But it should work on any rom.
Instructions:
This is NOT a flashable zip.
Download the animation zip file.
Rename to "bootanimation.zip"
Place in /data/local/
Reboot, and don't blame me if you break something

I plan on making more of these. Nasa has a lot of neat videos up and they seem to be updating them frequently.
(Note: I've also re-sized this for the Transformer 101 and posted here)

can someone make it a zip
I've fixed the original animation so that it loops properly now. (Mental note for boot animation creators: Remember to delete the hidden thumbs.db file that windows creates or it stops your animation >.< )
Also I've added a new animation of the sunrise lighting up the earth. This one turned out quite nicely.

If there is sufficient interest I try to teach myself the art of flashable zips. I haven't yet made one, and it is quite easy to copy the files around using something like Root Explorer, but I agree flashable zips are easiest.

You can easily do it yourself. Just find a flashable bootanimation.zip from this site, open it, delete that bootanimation.zip, and place in this bootanimation.zip. It's not rocket science . If you want to change the message that is displayed when flashing, open updater.script with a text editor like notepad++ (\META-INF\com\google\android\updater.script).
I came across a bios boot screen on a dutch forum. I liked it very much but couldn't find a good one for the i9300. Now I managed to do that, I ported it to the i9000. So here it is!

Make your choice lol:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=energy star bios bootanimation
That bootanim exists everywhere, maybe the most diffused ever.
I wanted to make a cwm zip for you but after having a look in the bootanimation.zip from here you can be sure it won't work (someone tested it?Not even sure your device will boot, pretty rare to be that buggy for a bootanim..)
I found one Samsung Galaxy S tagged, only bad side is that it's maybe a little too fast (30fps) we could reduce that later if you want.
For now if you want to test here's a cwm zip that will push it to data/local (I prefer it like this, that way you'll keep your bootanim even if you upgrade your rom unless you wipe data).

Thanks! remind me of my old PC
is it good for i9001 too? it's my first boot animation...
For Samsung Galaxy Note 3
I've taken the liberty of creating the .qmg version of the cyan nexus boot animation since Samsung decided to pull a douche bag move by creating their own boot animation setup. It is very cumbersome, to say the least, to get custom boot animations without the standard "bootanimation.zip". The stock boot animation annoys me with the bright white Verizon splash in it.
Keep in mind these are based off the original so it will be stretched (and a tad grainy) to fit the Note 3's resolution. I've had to edit each and every individual frame in Photoshop to give it a 16:9 aspect ratio so that it doesn't become distorted and stretched out of it's proper parameters. It's not completely awful but it's not super crisp either. Now that I've figured out how to do it I'll be moving on to boot animations made for higher resolution phones so they look crisp. But this is the first time converting one for me.
1. First and foremost obviously you must be rooted and have root explorer.
2. Download and extract the zip in the attachments to your phone or push them through from the computer. It contains the 2 files needed for a bootanimation.
3. It is also always good practice to backup your phone in safestrap made possible by Hascode, MANY thanks for that.
4. Once you have everything, open root explorer and navigate to system/media and backup two files "bootsamsung.qmg" AND "bootsamsungloop.qmg".
5. After backing them up to another location on your internal or external storage, delete them from system/media and replace them with the 2 files that you extracted from the zip. Reboot and enjoy a non-stock Verizon-Free bootanimation.
Of course this is at your own risk, but it worked for me.

Matrix/hacker style XPERIA boot animation
I have decided to attempt to make my own boot animation for Xperia devices, it's based on the GTA V hacker style, it could do with some minor improvements but for a first attempt it's OK. So far it's only 720p and is running on my Xperia z3 but unable to 1lget the 1080 version to work but I will upload as soon as its working. Here are a few screenshots:

Very cool! Well made first bootanimation I hope to see more!
I personally would do the font like 'bangothic MD', it's a little more hacky style but way to go!
Thanks for the tip will have a look if I ever improve this 1 and definitely going to make more after this, good way to waste some time
