Many others besides myself seem to have an issue where adfree/adaway don't seem to work.
I tried manually replacing my hosts file in /etc with esfile (root explorer enabled and system mounted R/W). However after rebooting, my hosts file seems to have changed back to the default one.
The steps I took:
- Pasted edited hosts file into /system/etc/. (I'm rooted so no errors so far)
- Changed permissions to rw-r-r
- Reboot
And after the reboot the my larger hosts file seems to have been replaced with some default one.
I'm currently using MyRom, but I've tired checking any setting that would interfere with this. I've also tried a fresh install of MyRom and this still happens. I think other people may have similar problems with adfree/adaway because of a similar issue. I'm thinking about reverting to stock and trying it again?

are you using adfree program restored from TB or from the store? if so you need to use TB Restore Fix after running TB .

Not that I know of. I tried doing this on a fresh rom install too, with no adfree programs installed.

I'll email the dev and see how the app is handling the host file. There is a known issue with some apps overwriting itself on reboot with (what i call) last known data.
Thanks for bringing this up.
* WHAT SPECIFIC APP ARE YOU USING (IE. ADAWAY)
I used adaway on official stock. Never had this issue with hosts reverting on reboot . It was however a pain to install, it fails and freezes multiple times before it works when ever I tried to update or revert the file.

Did somebody find a solution to this problem?? :crying::crying:
This does not answer your question directly, it gives you an alternative solution.
I use Adfree (for several years) by BigTinCan.com, it is easy to use and set up. I have never experienced a problem with it. Reboots work fine.

Seems strange that your host file would be changing if you never added a host adjusting app. Unless the ROM you are using includes it by default...
When I first started using AdAway on my GN3 it had problems.... It would start to update, stall, etc.... After a while however after an update or two, it worked itself out. Now I rarely think about it and manually updating it is very easy.

Hey Guys
Im trying to get rid of these annoying ads from pingchat or angry birds and even though the adfree is installed downloaded the hosts files etc and rebooted it still shows the ads, did Google blocked adfree in Froyo roms?
thanks
Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall adfree ? I had this issue before and that fixed the problem.
Must admit I'm having trouble with it at the moment too, been the last week or so maybe?
When I first rooted my phone (about 3 weeks ago) it was fine, but more recently it refuses to work. App itself is happy, just that it doesn't block ads.
Yeh well just reinstalled adfree and still nothing :/ hmm any ideas appreciated

Try Redux RC6 ROM, it seems to have adblocking built in (and is also a generally fantastic ROM) - its working well for me right now.
Also try Gingervillain 0.9 - once you're running it, you can install an adblocking zip from the villain setup app which is built in to the ROM. GV 1.0 is now available, but general feedback seems to suggest that it is buggy compared to 0.9, so go for 0.9 - I used to use this and it was fine, plus adblocking worked!!
I've always found setup to successfully run it to be different with every other ROM I tried - even across versions of the same ROM (which is a PITA). Mainly because of the variance in ROM structures. Right now for instance, I'm debugging the same issue on RCMixHD v3.0 D2W and I still can't manage to get it working.

I've managed to get it working again by finding my "hosts" file and deleting it and letting adfree to regenerate it again. Somewhere in "etc" folder.
Hope this helps.

what directory?
and btw I am not willing to change my rom until gingerbread for nexus is released and ported
Its straight in system/etc.
I also just had this link suggested. Flash via recovery for hosts update, host listing updated weekly so just reflash if you start getting ads.
Just removed adfree and flashed this and can confirm it works.

I have rooted my phone using the Vietnamese method, not Bin4ry's, and I have successfully unlocked the phone using Freegee. I downloaded Root Browser Lite and began trying to uninstall some of the bloatware I'll never use, but have found I cannot uninstall anything other than apps I installed myself. I have things running properly that require root, i.e. AdFree, but I noticed that RB Lite did not request root permission when I opened it up and tried uninstalling apps. I've uninstalled and reinstalled RB Lite a couple times, hasn't fixed anything. Am I doing something wrong? I am new to this game, having only one phone prior that I rooted/unlocked and messed with ROMs on, but I never had a single issue removing apps off my Evo 4G. Any help is welcome and appreciated! If you need more details, let me know. Thanks guys!
Does the RB Lite supports the required features?
Cause the Root Explorer, for example, doesnt provide them in light version.
It claims to. In the description: Batch copy/paste, zip, tar, delete, move any file or folder. When I ran FreeGee, I didn't get any errors, and CWM seems to be working fine. And again, apps that require root, i.e. AdFree are working correctly. I don't know, maybe I'll throw down the $3.99 for Root Explorer and see if that works...

Care to elaborate? May be helpful to others.
RB Lite was the issue. Downloaded File Explorer, which if you intend to use on a rooted phone, makes you download some extra files from the app store. This program is free and seems to work well enough, though my goal is simply debloating the phone. Anyways, silly error on many part.

So I recently rooted my Note 2 anddddd a few days after playing around with it (without a backup...i know...dumb me.) I am missing the settings apk so, in turn, I can't access my settings. Any one know how I can fix?
Thanks!

Backup your data, full wipe, reflash a stock rom. Unless someone can get you a stock titaniumbackup for the apk (which I dont even know is possible) you are out of luck I believe.
Another thing to check is to open up a stock rom's system/app folder on your computer and find the settings apk, maybe you can copy and past it into your directory with a file manager (es file manager if you need one). I've got nothing better to do right now so I will try it.
Edit: Too many settings apks. You've got to find the missing one
The second options should do it...
Thanks guys. Went with the first option. My next root run will come with many backups. Thanks!

Does anyone know what might cause completely removed apps to be re-generated/re-installed on the next boot?
I've tried to remove a few apps that come with CM by default, but I can't get the uninstalls to stick. I'm using Titanium Backup.
I've read that a locked bootloader can have this effect, but I'm pretty sure mine's not locked? Running UCUFNE4 firmware.
What's the bet it's just a trivial problem and I'm just being stupid...
do you have a file mngr. with root access that you could delete the apps from ?
device > system > app .
device > system > priv-app
err on the side of kindness
Indeed. Total Commander to the rescue!
Try removing the market link or removing them from my apps in play store
I'll try that as well. Though I think some of the apps aren't found on the store.
Its been a loooong time since I heard of that happening! Can't remember what causes it though. But you are correct, the bootloader is not locked. I agree to try using a file manager. If that doesn't work try deleting them from the rom before flashing.

Something is definitely going on with CM, but I have no idea what it is.
I was just on OmniRom, which worked beautifully. Also, that ROM doesn't have the RIL dropout problem that I've become so frustrated with, so again, something about CM and ROMs based off it just aren't very stable or something.
I can't even use a build.prop editor in CM as the changes aren't being applied. The app I'm using has su privileges, and it worked just fine in Omni.
WTF?
Guess I'll be using Omni until I find the answer for the CM problem. I've tried everything I can think of, short of completely erasing the NVRAM.
No theme engine for me.
WOW. I figured out what the problem is. It's the damn Superuser feature built-in to CM. It doesn't fully escalate privileges or something along those lines.
Letting SuperSU take over fixed all the strange problems I've been having (save for the buggy RIL issue, but that's another problem altogether).

Ive heard about several people having modem/radio issues with cm. What I heard is the latest builds cannot communicate with the modem. Not sure how accurate that is, but its what ive heard.

Tried the slap fix. Checked cpu z and my sensors look normal but I'm not sure really what they should look like. Tried turning rotation off then rebooting then turning back on. I have xposed, I saw another forum where someone said they disabled something in xposed to fix it but they didn't say what. Any help is greatly appreciated. I've done the dev conversion and rooted.
Have you uninstalled any apps (especially using Titanium Backup)?
Trying to uninstall Facebook or Instagram using Titanium Backup broke screen rotation for me. Manually deleting the app folders in /system/app/ was fine, though.

I did uninstall both of them with tb. And like the smart person I am I made no backup. Help?
Edit: Would installing from the app store fix it?
Edit:Edit: I tried, it didn't work. What can I do?
Is there a place I can download the apks from the stock image? I have the stock incremented one installed from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...nt/firmware-safe-upgrade-to-lollipop-t3313224
Would that even fix this issue?
It's not so much the apps themselves that's the issue, apparently TB deletes some system libraries that affect screen rotation.
The easiest/safest thing to do would be to reflash one of the safe upgrade options and re-root the phone. Deleting most apps with TB seems to be safe, but manually delete Facebook & Instagram.
Glad to hear the cause of this issue has been narrowed down to the uninstall of Insta and Facebook from system apps. Do you know if it's still safe to disable these apps by using something like Root App Disabler?
This worked for me. Dont flash , just copy the file in the zip to where it needs to go and reboot. It should be fine. Ofcourse make a backup in case.

I have disabled Facebook and Instagram using Titanium Backup and later manually deleted the apps from /system without affecting screen rotation.
The only issue appears to be using Titanium Backup to uninstall them.
I, too, have this problem with Jasmine v7.0. I have deinstalled facebook via TB and now screen rotation no longer works. I tried the libgnustl_shared.so fix but that does not seem to work for me as screen rotation is still broken. If anyone has another idea I am willing to give it a try. Otherwise I think I may re-flash Jasmine and manually remove facebook.

I would try a dirty flash of the exact version of the ROM you're using. It should reinstall the missing programs without messing much else up.

If you can't find anything else that works, wiping and re-flashing with Jasmine 7.0 definitely does. I flashed + deleted facebook quite a few times before I realized it was causing the screen rotation bug. It's tedious, but it will get rid of the problem.
Seems like facebook deletion via TB is not the only way to break screen rotation. I did a test and deleted several apps via TB (but left facebook installed) and I cannot pinpoint exactly which one broke rotation I can confirm that screen rotation did stop working. Therefore it seems that the best route altogether would be to delete apps manually instead of using TB to do so.

I'm running Jasmine V7, MM. Can you please tell me what ROM your fix worked for. I tried downloading, copy pasting "libgnustl_shared.so" to correct folder (mine was missing). Then, battery out/ reboot -didn't work. Other Note: I don't think I can dirty flash my ROM in the traditional sense as Jasmine V7 was only released in backup form. I would have wipe and to do fresh install. (This would suck as it mine is heavily modified) -THX!
