I searched for something like this, but couldnt find anything. Ive been flashing between different Roms since I got my phone, and wanted tosee if there was something that I could flash to wipe away all the gremlins from previous Roms. I still do a clean flash and wipe dalvik, cache, and factory reset. But ive been noticing little issues here and there.

Well There isn't one as such. Typically what I do is.
1. Factory Reset
2. Wipe Dalvik, Cache and sometimes /Data
3. Flash the Rom & Gapps.
4. Reboot Setup everything
5. Reboot Again to Recovery and then wipe Dalvik+Cache and then flash custom Kernel if I wanted.
I may skip Step 5 if I want to stick with Rom's own kernel. I know you went through this, I just wanted to specify the sequence. If you still have issues then post them on the new rom's thread.

Thanks. I know on the SGS Blaze 4G someone developed a gremlin cleaner that you could flash along with wiping everything manually. Just wondered if there was one for the S3. Im using Goosh rom, but it looks like the developer dropped support.

What little issues and on which ROMs? It matters.
Factory reset wipes data and cache. Dalvik cache is on the data partition, isn't it?
So factory reset, wipe system. Should be all you need to do.

Ive been reflashing Goosh rom, but after 2-3 months or so I have to reflash it because it slows down and starts to have issues. Havent installed or updated any apps. I dont have many and I know they can affect it. So thats when ive been doing. I really like the rom and get great battery life, but the dev has dropped support for it. Even to tell me to "use a different ROM" because he doesnt care. But each time I reflash it after a couple months, it doesnt seem to work as well as the very first flash from when I first got the phone. I feel like things are building up/not getting completely wiped.

Please try Auto Memory Manager on most aggressive setting. Check and see how things go. If you see FCs then dial back to medium.

Unless you're completely wiping everything, including internal sd, then there will of course be lingering data. But consider doing a true factory reset, which formats /data. From a custom recovery, it doesn't format because it's preserving your internal sd data. You'll have to specifically choose Format Data from within the recovery.
Something else you can try is in Settings, Developer Options, at the bottom choose Limit Background processes and I would select 3 to start. If it doesn't help much go to 2 and test.

So, last week or a bit past last week, i flashed aokp JB build 3 and then franco nightly. I have Clockwerk recovery and flashed gapps. (Tutorial)
So now yesterday , my phone was fine. Around sometime in the afternoon after i replied a text , then an hour later my phone was off. I thought that was weird, so i turned it on and after the google logo, i'm stuck on the aokp logo. And can't get past it. I played a 55 MIN dota 2 game with the boot logo on. I'm quite a noob. So help me please?

Probably nothing wrong with your device. I would guess it has to do with a bug in either AOKP or your custom kernel. Flash back to stock and I bet your device will boot. (Link is stickied in General or look in my signature.) You have to expect issues like that when you are running custom roms and particularly custom kernels. If you don't want to deal with those issues, I would recommend to stay stock.

Hi, okay so it says that flashing wont remove data, then above on the top of the thread it says that it will erase everything. I'm confused.
If this is the ONLY way , then can you please tell me how to do this, i'm confused.
If there is another way on to get out of this boot logo aokp thingy, without losing data , please tell me.
Note: i dont know if i'm doing anything, but i backed up via the recovery CWM
then after i deleted cache and dalvik, then flashed aokp, franco and then g apps. And nothing happened
Bump please. i really don't want to wipe my phone
Reflash AOKP, the Kernel and GApps, You could also jsut reflash AOKP and GAPPS with no custom kernel. that should pull you out of the bootloop. If it does not pull you out of the bootloop you will have to find another rom based off of what AOKP is and try flashing that. Most likely right now there is a problem with your boot.img file or AOKP rom its self. if you just reflash everything like you are flashing a nightly you should be fine unless something else is work. After you flash everything like you do with a new nightly make sure you wipe cache and dalvik. If non of the above works you might have to wipe and start all over again. You do not lose your internal SD card data just your user data and system data.

Uhh i reflashed aokp, kernel and gapps. Nothing really. Two questions.
1. Anything else?
2. for the reflashing, i want to flash another rom, how do i put the files on the phone? Gnex doesn't have an sd card slot and i dont know how to access it on the computer if it is in recovery mode. So confused
EDIT: not entirely sure what flashing means, so what i meant by flashing in my case, was that i just re ran the zips. then reboot. Nothing . waited 5-10 minutes ish. Never had long bootups on my first try.

Please do not bump a thread more than once every 24 hours (see rule 16). Thanks.
As for your issue, I will say it again: the link I provided you has all the information you need to return your device to stock without wiping the data on /sdcard. You just need to take some time and read it carefully a couple of times instead of rushing through it. If you don't understand something, just ask. (What you had said previously: "Hi, okay so it says that flashing wont remove data, then above on the top of the thread it says that it will erase everything. I'm confused." says to me that you did not read the entire post and the notes. And note, if your bootloader is already unlocked, you do not have to unlock it again...)

But there is a problem. I cant access the phone. Since it won't boot up i can't access it from the computer.. Or can i? There's no sdcard slot either
So I was rummaging around the dev section, QA, so forth. And I have seen numerous threads, questions, posts, where people have had issues with ROMs or just general left field issues that were resolved by going back to square 1 doing a fresh clean install of "rom.zip..
My goal with this thread is to contribute some insight and experience with customizing android devices in the way we all do... at square one, clicking the download button.... we also do not have a thread dedicated to this one subject alone, so here it is. I feel stickying this thread would be extremely useful, as so many people could see it right from the get-go and get valuable information from it.
Just getting right into it, I will say this, I have flashed (I'm sure) damn near 1,000 ROMs to various devices. Mine. Friends. Etc. And never once have I installed a corrupt zip file to these devices. This should never happen, and among other important details to any installation of a ROM, this one is the most important...
VERIFY THAT YOUR DOWNLOADS ARE GOOD!
How do you do this??? Well I will show you... it is with this handy little app called md5 checker from the play store. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE OF US.... should have this app, guys (and gals, because I know you are out there it is a free app. No excuses
What is an MD5 checksum? Trusty link to get the gist of it.. http://www.fastsum.com/support/md5-checksum-utility-faq/md5-checksum.php
Making this simple - I will break this down into steps. Follow this meticulously and 99.9% of the time you will not have an issue or be one of the random bugs popping up when everyone else seems fine.
1. Download md5 checker.
2. Download all zip files needed for your ROM. (whether you do this from your mobile device or a desktop/laptop it doesn't matter, because you WILL verify the file AFTER you have transferred it to where it needs to be allocated - your device). Basically, download it, transfer it.
3. Open md5 checker, the app is pretty easy to use. Much like a file explorer in its layout with the obvious differences.
4. Retrieve md5 for your zip files.
5. Verify them with ROM developer, or others using that particular ROM. Any discrepancies - back to step 2.
6. All is well? Boot to recovery.
7. Wipe data 3 times (you don't need to wipe dalvik cache, that directory is found in the data partition - wiping data = wiping dalvik cache)
8. Wipe cache 3 times (this sometimes does not need to be done either depending on whether or not your recovery wipes cache with data.. most recoveries will spit out some text during the wiping phase letting you know the details of the process and you'll see see something like this when wiping data)..
"Wiping /data...
"Wiping /cache
If you see cache being wiped, you are good. No need to manually wipe cache.
9. Format your system partition through recovery 3 times
10. Install your ROM. Reboot. Let it sit for a minute or two, reboot it again. If you are not installing a custom kernel, stop here. You are done, and winning.
11. Reboot to recovery, wipe cache partition 3 times AND dalvik cache. They are both there as options, for this reason - the goodies we install after a full ROM install.
12. Flash kernel zip. Reboot. Let it sit for a minute or two, reboot it again. You are done, and winning.
Interesting fact about all the ROMs I have installed over the years, NOT ONCE, have I ever installed something corrupted, and every issue/bug I have ever had with a ROM was a known issue. This also doesn't mean your particular device is always going to be able to run for weeks on end without needing a quick reboot. Sometimes its good to do the dishes, I get that. But my disclaimer here is for all to note, if you follow these steps meticulously, you will ALWAYS be able to say to yourself with confidence "nope, did it right, there is something else going on here." And thus you will be a greater problem solver and contributor to the community as a whole every single time you pose a thought or question regarding any problems you are having.
"Do it right once, instead of doin it wrong twice before doing it right."
We are nothing useful without useful information. Useful information = posting in a thread in this tone...
"Hey, installed ROM correctly/thoroughly, verified downloads, XXX is buggy blah blah etc etc... can somebody else here verify if they are or aren't having this issue? Thanks!"
Based on people's response you'll know if it is just you or a legitimate issue, in which case, you brought it to the attention of us all, and the dev(s), and you have now been very useful.
What you don't want to do is this....
"My phone keeps rebooting!!! Haaaalp"
The reason why you shouldn't post like that is because you will ALWAYS get a sour response or people will just ignore you. Or, they will reply with questions you should have already asked yourself... "did you verify your downloads were good??? Did you do a clean and thorough install???"
Long post, but I hope somebody will find it useful and utilize it. It will increase your experience with your android device in a positive way, as it has for me. Cheers

Personally, I say no. A few people aparently found it to sometimes be necessary on a previous phone and are just more comfortable continuing to do it that way. I never have wiped more than once, and never had any problems.
Its just what you're more comfortable with in the end. It shouldnt hurt anything, so its not a wrong way, just unnecessary imo.

I followed these steps and worked for me. THANKS!
I have been having this annoying problem since day 1 and cannot get an answer to it. Even google has failed me. So, whenever I choose app defaults (like launcher or different sms app, etc) they stick as defaults until I reboot. When I reboot, it asks me again for each one. I have this same problem whether I am rooted or not, have had it with stock roms, etc. Why is this happening? It is very frustrating.
Wow... no one else is having this problem? Should I return it for exchange? It seems like a software glitch, but a factory reset doesn't fix it.
Still having this issue. Is no one else having it? Are there file permissions I can check? Is there a file not properly getting saved which holds defaults? I hate having to constantly remind my phone which apps to use for what.

As I stated in the OP, on every ROM, rooted or not. I have done a wipe with every ROM I have used. Even occurs when I do a factory reset with a stock rom. Fix permissions does not help either.
I have a sneaking suspicion that there is no such thing as a full factory reset.

Did you try wiping /system prior to flashing the various ROMs? Typically when someone does a factory reset, it means they are clearing /data and the caches. It sounds to me like something is messed up in your /system partition, which might be persistent across ROMs.

Yes... full wipe before each rom... and full wipes after factory resets.
does anyone know which file is responsible for storing app defaults? I'd like to take a look and see if it is getting overwritten, or what the deal might be. This is an annoying problem. Having to keep selecting my video player, launcher, etc.

Yes... e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g
I have fully wiped (yes all of it) prior to a stock rom install... and factory reset plus fully wiped (yes all of it) after a stock rom install.
yes... wiped to the point of losing ALL- ALL--ALL data. I have taken this thing down clean.
I have one-clicked, standard odin'd, kies, dialer pad reset, recovery mode reset, settings reset....
Every time... I am able to get back to stock clean... but nothing is resolving to the point where app defaults will start behaving. They arent behaving.
I lose them after every reboot.
app defaults not sticking on reboot
I am also having this problem on my Sprint SGS3 (not rooted).

I don't understand why you need that. KnishKnosh understands what the issue is. Are you not understanding what I am describing?
Surely you have seen this phenomenon before. Whenever there are multiple apps to accomplish a task (i.e. browsing, launching, texting, etc), it will ask you which app you want to use. You then choose an app and tell it to always use it or to use it just once. What I am saying is that even when I choose "always," it only sticks until I reboot.... then it asks again. This is not normal behavior.
I have the same issue as well Edufur, So you're not alone.
Usually my problem is Home Launchers not sticking on reboot.
And coincidentally its all the home launcher apps i paid for pro excluding Holo Launcher and Nova.
Apex Pro, LauncherPro+, ADWLauncher Ex are the ones for me that always resets its default status for being home.
There's a lot of people that has this problem and there hasn't been a fix for it.
Its more like a Device Compatibility issue for certain applications to me then anything else.
Because my friends LG OG doesn't have these issues.

So it looks like he is experiencing the same thing as me. Yes, that is what happens. And even when I click "Always," it only sticks until the next reboot... and then it happens again. Yes, it has been like this ever since I bought the device (and even before rooting). Yes... it continues to be a problem even after factory resets / multiple wipes / all ROMS / full clears (including internal storage)... yes FULL wipes... before and after flashing new roms, stock roms, all of it. Sorry... but I am trying to be as clear as I can on this because it seems like people keep asking the same basic questions. No one seems to have a clue about this problem... it is nice to know though, that I am not alone with this problem.
So it looks like this problem even exists for other Galaxy products. I never realized this before but my GF has the Epic 4G Touch (galaxy s2) and it has the same issue. How is it that this isn't a big concern for people?

Because it sticks for everyone else. Like me.
So the other day i go put on a new rom and boot into TWRP to wipe and install. so i do my normal thing (wipe data/system/cache then install rom and gapps then wipe cache again. then reboot. i let it do its 10 min thing. then start to use the phone again. same problem as before (launcher constantly crashing) so i do my wipe and install again. this time i notice i have significantly less room on my data partition. so i go and do another wipe and install to check. this time even less space. i do it a couple more times to see if maybe it will fill up the space and then maybe completely wipe everything. no such luck. no my phone is basically useless with no way to install an OS or boot into the current one. any help on actually doing a real full wipe so that i have room again? i prepared to use odin or whatever i need to do to revert back to full stock then start all over again with the root process just to refresh my skills and get everything brand new again.
please any info would be great since id like to have a working phone again (pulled out the old iphone 4 in the mean time)
thanks guys!

TWRP has a Dalvik cache wipe which, IMO, is basically a factory reset. There may be more to it than I'm aware of. I'm not a dev, so I really can't say one way or another. Infamous and Darkside both have the full wipe which does everything. Anytime I flash a new ROM, I'll run Infamous followed by the TWRP wipe. Haven't had a problem, yet.
Glad it all worked out for you. I know what it's like to be in a situation like that. Been there, myself, a couple of times.
Ok here it goes. my network service is off so i use my droin inc for games and such. running custom rom wildstang83 IceCream Scencless 1.0. im not sure what happened to my phone but i left for 3 days and come back to my phone being totally jacked up. It wot dl apps the google play reverted back to the old market icon. wont save my passwords for google sighn in. every time i go to youtube it says to re dl the google play services. im sure other stuff is messed up too. i have tried to flash another rom but when it gets loaded back up it keeps saying process. whatever failed and there a bunch of those that loop and i have to pull battery. when i try to factory reset it says everything was formatted but when i reboot phone its the sme as it was before apps and all. So is there anyone out there who can help me with this. Sorry if i posted in the wrong place or what not. i wasnt sure where to post it cuz its kinda an advanced question but not really a question just need help.
not a virus but it does sound like your phone might have exhausted all the space in the /data folder. I had a similar thing happen to me before I rooted and fixed my phone where i exhausted the space, itt went a factory reset and put the phone into an unusable state.
i don;t know anything about the rom you are running but are rooted and have CWM installed? if so, you should be able flash a new ROM to your device, GAPPS and optionally, the low space disk fix.

Yes i do have cwm but i tried to flash a new rom via the recovery section. after i choose the zip to flash everything goes as expected untill after the reboot and it goes into the setup part where u have to put gmail password and stuff in then it basically freezes up with unlimited process failures. but i will try again. cant hurt from where it is now.
if you are not doing so already, i would wipe cache and dalvik cache after flashing the rom. that may fix the FCs.
I would also suggest you run a newer jelly bean ROM like Tiny;s 5-16 with his version of GAPPS(4-05) version plus the low space disk fix so you can maintain parity with what is the latest.
I am currently using evervolve 6-25 and it is working well for me.
the reason I say that is these newer JB roms have the ability to let you skip the activation easily. I don;t know if it was some feature of GB roms but the activation wizard in the JB roms seem to be better my opinion.
When switching to a different ROM, it is crucial to wipe /system. This can be a source of FCs. Also, if switching, it is also a good idea to do factory reset.

I just flashed another rom i used in the past by the same dev and so this is my step by step. 1. choose zip from sd. 2. factory reset. 3. wipe dalvik cache. 4. wipe cache partition. If this doesnt work i will try jb roms but i would hate to have to dump the dev that im useing. there the most stabe roms i have come across so far

what do u mean wipe /system. where do i find that. only reason i ask is cuz maybe ive never done that. but i have never had a problem withthe other 15 roms i have flashed before so thats why im so confused about what happened to my phone. all i did was shut it off and leave it home. nothing changed from my daily use before that and it was working top notch before i shut it off
im getting settings fc. youtube fc, my uploads fc, market fc, clock widget fc, internet fc, rss reader fc, htc sence fc, all those off of a fresh flash ad new sd card
Just lost my bckups that were saved on sd card so now i cant even get on it i dont get it. its not bricked but yet it i unstabe to run any rom but the preivious saved backup (now there deleted)
maybe the rom you downloaded is corrupt. worst case scenerio is that your phone is on it;s last legs.....
i would suggest you try downloading the JB rom and Gapps plus the low space fix.

it;s kind of proven to work in my opinion. the 5-16 build is pretty stable.
what I do is flash the rom zip, gapps zip and low space zip, then wipe cache and dalvik. it probably should not make a difference but I am using TWRP as my recovery instead of CWM.
goodluck!

Thank u and its still not working. probably just takeing a dump on me now it is just bootlooping.
when i do a factory reset i get a wipe completed. but it says "no app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext" could that be part of the issue?? ive never noticed that before
i don;t know if switching to TWRP might help you but it might be worth a try. maybe a coincidence but the last time I had a screw up on my Dinc installing a ROM, i was using CWM. I switch right after that. I think i did read something about TWRP specifically supporting the EXT4 Low space fix.
maybe someone more knowledgable can chime in.
