[Q] Forum text size - About xda-developers.com

Hey this might be a stupid question but the forum text is way small and really strains my eyes. Is there any way to change it? zooming with chrome just make the entire page bigger, and the text lines are the width of my monitor by the time the text is comfortable to read. Im using a 30" 2560x1600 monitor about 60cm away. Surely I'm not crazy here?
While I'm at it is there a way to change the theme aside from stylish? black text on white background make homer something something...
I tried to search for this for a while but theres ten million phone related posts for anything to do with font or text size. I guessing this is the right place to post this, even though it says THIS IS NOT A Q&A FORUM STOP BREAKING THE RULES. I couldn't find a q&a subforum about the website.

Hello ppl,
I used it, it works really nice. 3kb cab file... so simple..
.. here are some pics as looks on my system.
I used a dull gray backgound for pictures..
You can drag and drop the elements in the position you want in order to set up order.. that works pretty fine.
Now, question is, any possibility to have bigger characters on the screen ? as this looks too small.. or at least to have them in one line only ? not white / yellow thing as on the screen ? only white and bigger - similar to windows default theme ? maybe more spaced.. but definitely larger characters.
Brgds,
Radu

Yes it's possible, the white or the yellow?
v2.. biggest fonts
hi,
if you ask me, i would like to have white letters only.
similar size, a little smaller than theme.
ideea would be to look consistent with theme default.
maybe...the "loupe" effect is it possible?

radu

What's the "loupe" effect?
This a simple css not a app. The fonts it's the original windows.
Just the white font it's possible. In same place but little smaller?
Hello again Mike,
Here are two pictures of actual look and what i think would look better.
Is about taking out the yellow writing all together, it does not make sense to have same thing written twice, it looks cluttered.
Unless, let's say, if there is a folder which has more than one icon inside it, like for example the Tools or Settings folder. There will have to have the big white letter for title and in yellow letters, below, the content of the folder.
Size of the yellow letter seems fine for me.
As for the white letter, maybe one single size increase, like from Tahoma12 to Tahoma 13 ( and/or bolded ) so that would look closer to original windows default theme. But, not too much as it looks now, "Microsoft My Phone" is very long and would go out of the screen on the right side..
My ideea would be to have same aspect once navigating in between main theme and control panel.
"Loupe" effect, is the highlight ( or magnify lens ) that is placed on the active icon, like the effect for the clock tab, in the main theme. Or can you replace this with a underline for the title... i do not know if this is even possible..
regards,
Radu
PS: i would be really happy if i knew to tinker code here, not to bother you..
LE : started reading the post in original thread, maybe the yellow text can remain but made smaller to resemble tooltip description... small text that you really need to look closer to understand the meaning of the title if not displayed correctly...Somehow to differentiate title from description and create impression of separate "paragraphs", if that is right term.

For the code, no prob use the 2 files in attachement. For edit use notepad++ and replace the original in windows folder and softreset.
Tahoma 13 is the font of titanium? it's not a probleme for replace the font in start menu.
Thank you man, that's what i want, also i see this become a very useful post.... nice!!

[Q] How do I make images like this?

I recently saw images in the themes section, that I loved and subsequently now use for my phone. Shown:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=781455
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=783946
Now, how do I resize the images properly? Scale, resize? Differences? What program to use (free, I'd prefer)? How to add that black bar so lovely at the bottom of the images and the text there? I tried figuring it out, but I couldn't figure out how to search how to do that specific thing.
Any help would be great! I want to start making images in that fashion for other applications, as those are very limited.
When I had my Hero, you could download Desktop Visualizer - this will allow you to associate certain pictures to the icons you want. It will also allow you yo resize them....my suggestion is start with a big icon and resize it smaller - smaller to big makes it look grainy...as for the dock bar....I used (use) LauncherPro - under LauncherPro setting you can change the dockbar....hope this helps!!
The black bar at the bottom looks to be a custom dock for LauncherPro. I've seen it in collections of LP Docks before (I'm unfortunately not immediately able to find it, but google it and spend a few minutes, and you ought to find it no prob).
As for the icons, Simi Folder would be one way to do it if what you're linking to is a folder. Not sure for just an icon that links directly to an app -- you can certainly resize icons in LPP, but I'm not sure off the top of my head how to do it and maintain the scale. You could probably compress it using Photoshop such that when it gets stretched, it looks correct? I dunno, someone else may have better ideas...
I believe people are misunderstanding what I'm asking.
I know how to get it all set up on my homescreen and such. I have the setup like that currently, no problem, using DesktopVisualizer and LPP.
I'm more asking about how they placed those bars on the image and the writing. See, they have an image that they got from wherever on the internet, put that minimalistic black transparent bar on the bottom and wrote "Texts" there, so that one would use it as a tile of sorts (as the theme they're going for is an "Android Phone 7" sort of thing"). I want to basically get images from wherever in the internet as well and use them for other applications. Like, create a, say, "Market" one, where the image I found will represent in some form, a market, and then put that black transparent bar in the image and type "Market" in some font in the corner like they did so that I can then use DesktopVisualizer to use the image as the icon in the manner shown in those posts. I'm assuming you can't just go and place a huge image (####x###) as the icon and hope it fits right. They resized theirs down to like 355x115 or something. Every time I try to resize something like that, though, it does not like it in the least. So, I'm wondering how they did that, too.
In a sense, they're like icon sets, if you will, and I want to then expand their offerings, as they only offer "icons" for a few applications or needs.
God, what a text wall. Sorry!
I wouldn't mind knowing myself, I'm all for customizing my Evo, and the more I learn the better I can do so.
I'm sure it's a relatively simple process, I just simply don't know how and wouldn't even know how to search for it. Like, what, "black bar on image?" Ha!
Hundreds of views, hardly any replies! You'd think this wise community would know!

The text is just in the image, it isn't some magical add-on. It is probably just a black rectangle and then transparency adjusted to taste.
There are a handful of win7 style icon packs like that. You could use one of those as a template (for size) and use your own images and text. Minimal PS or GIMP experience needed. Just keep the aspect ratio of the images when you are resizing them and provided they aren't absurdly larger than the ~355x115 or whatever size you are aiming for they should still look fine.
The second link says it comes with photoshop templates. You could always just download the 30 day free trial of photoshop.
looks like a simple photoshop job to me, just add a second layer above the background, rectangle marquee the section you want to be the transparent bar, then paint bucket the area with a black (or any color) at 50% opacity, then add text.

Minimalist forum theme?

I looked at the 2013Beta theme, and the forum page looks very similar to the current 2013 theme...
Is it possible to get a minimalist theme for the forums? Possibly with a dynamic reaction added to the interface?
For example...
myself, personally... unless I care about a specific post, I really don't want to have the user's profile and avatar and signature taking up so much real estate on the screen, that there is actually more of that content, than there is actual posts that I am looking to read.
and then, perhaps a hover state would reveal the entire contents of the post. Even the quoted text could be included in what is revealed on hover. I know that I see many posts with huge quote sections, that I don't need to see, because the response is thorough enough or directly following the post it is quoting in the first place.
Perhaps even give the user settings, where they can choose which elements are hidden until they mouse over the "reveal all" section of the post, or hit the "reveal all" toggle. Something like that... it could even be a right click menu or hover menu on the title bar of the post.
I did a quick DOM edit just now and screen capped the comparisons. This is without even touching on the concept of smaller icons, less padding... etc
I know that many people like to see interfaces in different ways. I deal with UI enhancements for productivity/usability purposes on a daily basis. And for me, having as little extra information to ignore on the screen, as my eyes scan for information I am actually interested in, makes for a much easier flow, as well as faster.
thanks for reading!

new 2015 theme issues, possibility to get the old 2015 theme back?

it looks like the forum theme has just been updated, and I have 2 issues with it.
I'm using "Atlas" on android 5.1.1.
first a visual glitch: when a tap or mouse-over happens on a thread name in a thread list it adds extra space, causing the layout of the entire list to jump around.
this is particularly disruptive when using a mouse or an "air view" capable device.
and then a matter of convenience: device forum lists used to contain only a device description followed by a list of subforums.
now there's an extra-large list of the 4 most active threads between the device description and subforum list, which adds an entire screen's height of content to scroll through.
and each subforum link is followed by links to the 5 latest threads making a single subforum take up a full screen's height, instead of fitting all subforums on 1 screen.
this results in too much scrolling for me.
I'd like to revert to the old 2015 theme, but unfortunately there's no option for this in the theme selector.
is there any way I can get the more compact and less jumpy 2015 theme back?
@bitpushr is our server admin. He might be able to help with these issues.
We haven't pushed out any big changes to the 2015 theme - just incremental changes - so there isn't a way to 'go back'. I will pass your feedback along and also we should have a fix since it sounds like that first issue is a bug.
So the "jumping around" issue is fixed.
The device forum list: we just rolled out some "jumps" that let you more quickly get to a desired section. We still need to clean up the design a bit, but it looks like this: https://goo.gl/Ft32HO
Another option you always have is to use previous templates, like 2013 or 2010. You can change with the template switcher in the bottom left corner of each page here on the forums
the jumping is indeed fixed.
the "forum jumper" however unfortunately makes the scrolling worse for me.
what could perhaps work is if opening a link from a "forum jumper" in a new tab would open the entire subforum, while clicking/tapping it would scroll down to the preview like it does now.
and old themes aren't exactly an option on phones because they don't adjust to the screen width, and unfortunately after the "death" of opera mobile there aren't any browsers left that can do these adjustments by themselves.
edit: i thought of another solution, though it would probably take quite some work.
a minimize buttons like on the forums main page, which hides the "recent threads", and make it folded out on desktop and minimized on phones by default.
i've also included an image showing the amount of scrolling needed to go through a device page on a phone with a 1440x2560 screen.
that's about 13/14 screen heights, 33.000-35.000 pixels tall.
apparently the edit screen for these comments allows for link parsing and attachments while they aren't actually possible in comments.
http://imgur.com/WtRRqxB
that is the image i was referring to(i hope).

New forum design is yet another step down

XDA has the least user-friendly forum design I've seen. It has nothing to do with advertisements. Whenever I click the search icon or click the text box for searching a thread or forum, it uses Algolia instead of the far superior built-in vBulletin search engine. Finding a particular forum is a pain in the ass because the newest devices of the day displace links to more useful forums like "General" and whatnot.
This new design is no improvement. Up in the left-hand corner of the top nenu bar, you could click a dropdown menu to view your own posts, any new PMs that have been received, and replies to your own posts. Now, there is some dinky little link that says "Notifications", but brings you to a page without notifications! There is a dot next to "Notifications" for me that says I have 3, but all it does is bring me to my user control panel where NO replies to my posts are shown. It doesn't even reset the unread notification count.
Who the hell designs this website's UI?
My notification dot keeps filling up and never sets back to 0.
No more Mentions or Quotes too, what happened to these? Please put back...
I know you all are trying it's much appreciated but the layout is to Bloated looking, like the News drop down, with the images and bold font, the design is really old looking, sorry to say...
Thin/Light Sleek for Text and UI...
The old layout was fine, it worked.
Please keep this to one thread, thanks: https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/about-xda/xda-interface-issues-t3875934
