Optimus G - LG Optimus G (International)

Hi community,
I'm working in a Tele2 shop and have access to all kind of phones, owned all the flagships from all manufactures included S4, One, S3, Onex, Note2 etc.
Now I'm on Optimus G and don't have intention to leave it, as is by far the best phone from all of them.
My question is, what do you think why the LGOG is so underrated, underestimated?
I mean why such low interest in this phone, cause on 15 S4 that I sell one LGOG is sold.
The service repair rate is like on 20 S4 7 is back for repair between the first month, which makes it the most serviced phone in my store, and the rates for the LGOG is 1 over 20 phones.

I know that very well, as I said, I'm a shop manager in Tele2, but if you compare the price in my country for an S3 and the LGOG, the S3 is 50$ more expensive, which has no reason to be, you can't compare this two phones, I'm talking about the standard S3 not the LTE version. Lg has a quiet good marketing in my country.

true, lgog is one of the best, but unfortunatelly it came unnoticed.not to mention it came late in europe.that's lg's biggest problem, then the updates issue. it doesn't matter you make the best phone,if you deliver it after 6+ months from release. meanwhile, the competition doesn't sleep.

Galaxy phones have great marketing and support from Samsung and dev comunity, also they come packed with features that easily atract average buyers. After using SGS2 and HTC One S i just fell in love with Krait So I was thinging about buying SGS3 or LGOG, and they both had interesting features. Desided to get OG cuz it was 50 eur cheaper.

LGOG is a beast in performance compared to sgsIII..... Since this was the LG's first flagship phone during the time of release, users had doubt to buy this phone. Also Samsung has almost occupied lot more ppls in globe which pushed OG to the drown..... Though this s a grt phone, camera quality is nt upto expectation..... LG shud ve released all versions of OG with 8mpx nd improved quality instead of 13mpx and avg quality...this s also the another reason for this phone not getting popularity..... Also LG is very very slow in pushing update to their flagship models slower than Internet Explorer...
The oly problem arises in this phone is NFC.... Duno wat t hell LG did... Within 6 months I visited service centr thrice and changed the entire motherboard 3 tyms.... :banghead::banghead:

Yep, I agree OG deserves better visibility... I have been using SGS2 for a while, but am now putting it up for sale after buying OG for just $150 (used, but in a great shape). It's an awesome phone, even with some things that are still lacking in my books (i.e. camera quality, no OTG and no SD card slot). I am not worried too much about updates, as I am happy with 4.1.2 at the moment. And I used to have an O2X before, so I am aware of LG's crappy updates...

Well I'm very satisfied with the camera, just go to gsm arena and compare the camera of Xperia Z S4 and OG and you will see that the S4 camera is slightly better but not much, and the Xperia Z it's much much worst. If we compare prices then I think we're wining the game.

Yeah, I know... But simply comparing OG with my old SGS2, the camera on S2 is significantly better, in both stills and video. So, for me personally, the camera is a bit of a downgrade. This is just my subjective, non-scientific comparison...

Samsung has only stronger sharpen setting nothin more, It's just a software settings, that work indee very well.

It looks like the thread took a detour, but I have to add one more thing about the camera... I want to take back what I said about the image quality. Here is what happened. I was looking at the lens cover, and it seemed to me that I just couldn't clean it well enough, no matter what I did. Having a knack for taking apart everything that gets into my hands, without a second thought I decided to open up my OG. Apparently, on the inside of the lens cover there was some residue (not a dust, but more like a thin film or "haze"), which I easily removed with a Q-tip. Put stuff back together, and tried snapping the same pics I was taking yesterday, in the same lighting conditions and using the same stock camera app. Everything is crystal-clear now! I have to say I am much happier now, as this was one of the main things this phone was falling short in comparison to my old SGS2.
Getting back to the original thought about the OG being underrated, I think the lack of awareness actually has its advantages... I mean, if it was as popular as S3, for example, there would be no way in hell I could get it that cheap on Craigslist!

Agressive marketing won't make a device better. A good product sells by itself. If a product needs a lot of advertising, then it has flaws. Instead of investing in publicity, samsung should spend more on quality materials.

I disagree with the quality materials statement. Just because its plastic, doesn't mean its not of quality construction or durability. Glass shatters and ads additional weight, whilst metal dings and bends. In the event a plastic case does break, a replacement can be cheaply sourced and its easy to refit. Samsung has a carbon fiber division that is rumored to be developing sgs5 housing.

I think $897 is ridiculous. Nothing really impressive other than the screen. For me... pass.
i like how lg made it so similar to our note 2
I wouldn't mind seeing that screen slapped on Note 2. Coming from higher PPI land (old phone was Evo 4G LTE), I can see slight fuzziness of the text on Note 2. But I love colors. Other than that, I think I would hold on to my Note 2 for quite some time.
No S-Pen = just another cellphone.
It's the first phone to feature the Snapdragon S600, which is significantly faster than the S4 pro.
The bezel is better than our device , but I still love my s-pen and its xing

wow I might sell my note and get that . 13mp cam 600 snapdragon @ 1.7 1080 screen ??? thats everything that shoulda been in the note 2
401PPI ??? Wow that combined with the 1080 display must blow the note 2 display out of the water.
It's gonna be a very nice phone. I hope tmobile carries it.

loooks a lot like a note 2 doesnt it?
A few things jump out at me about the G Pro but the price is just atrocious... getting 500 out of me for the GNII was hard enough and to think GNII prices will surely dip once this $900 device hits the streets.
If nothing else but a marketing ploy, Samsung will provide the GNII just as the "cheaper, adequate" alternative (this time it really will be adequate).
Ultimately the smart buyer will go with the GNII, and Samsung will just "hedge" every LG or other Manufacturers "bet" by fluctuating their price accordingly.. lets face it, even at full price 700 is better than 900, and whenever LG does a sale, Samsung can afford to counter.
It will be a while before the GNII becomes obsolete, to the point where it has to be sold cheaply to gain sales

It looks nice and the specs are tip-top, but if it's got the glass back it's a non-starter.
meh, I like Samsung products better. Also I'm addicted to the SuperAMOLED displays.
Samsung will sink this with their next version of the Note, and that's most likely what I'll get after my Note 2.
I hope the price is a misprint. That is a crazy amount for a phone with marginally better specs.

Anyone switching to the HTC One?

I like my Optimus G (no real complaints) but couldn't pass up the HTC One. Sprint forgot to reset my upgrade eligibility when I got the Optimus G in November so I went ahead and ordered the HTC One (suppose to be here on Monday) and Sprint threw in an extra $50 "renewal" credit to my account making the phone $150. I know some people really dislike HTC but I've always had a good experience with their previous devices (Evo 4G and Evo 3D) and the developer community for HTC devices is really second-to-none. Because I was able to get the HTC One at such a low price, I think I'm going to hang on to my OG (would normally sell it), cancel the Sprint insurance, get a Squaretrade warranty, and use the OG as a backup. Going to miss having the OG as my daily device but excited for the HTC One.

Don't blame you. I hope always liked my HTC phones too. Now you can unlock boot loader with the manufacturers own website. You can flash anything too. I'm afraid to flash anything on this phone as there's always something. Wife's phone is just as quirky. The only problem I see with the HTC one is the 4 megapixel camera. A deal killer for me.

I hear you on the camera as I am quite interested to see how it performs. It supposedly uses larger pixels ("ultrapixels") that let more light in. Sounds nice but not sure how that translates into performance. All the reviews I've read though indicate the photos are just as good (if not better) than the higher megapixel camera phones, especially in low light. And the posted photos from users seem decent as well so that was enough for me to take the plunge. Hopefully I won't be disappointed.
Nope. As nice of a phone as it is, not worth $200 and a 2 year contract. My Optimus G is more than fast enough still and I'm very satisfied with it. Not upgrading until Sprint comes out with tri-band phones.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
I most likely will. Its hard to keep in stock. Not a single one has been returned. In fact some have returned to buy more accessories for it and I have to stand there and listen to them gloat about awesome it is. Ive played on our demo and s4 demo a lot recently and the s4 is a joke compared to the HTC one.
I'll be upgrading to that as soon as I get 250. I have a spare s3 laying around and im able to get the 250 back just gotta pay it first.
Its WAY worth the upgrade. Dual front speakers. Faster quadcore. Ultrapixel camera which more than speaks for itself. Takes beautiful pictures. The design is slick. The s4 still feels cheap but one has all the same features plus more.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
I can't believe HTC is the only company to brainstorm dual front facing speakers.
Its so simple yet genius.
I've been swearing for 2 years how phones need the speakers out of the front.
Honestly, I was going to go with the One X over the OpG but got tired waiting on a release date.
Won't say I'm stuck with the OpG because its a great phone, I love it, but if both had been available at the same time, well....
Either Epic knows something or he is saving them all for himself. I do want to know either way so please share.
I have been tempted to switch. But, the camera and ir blaster is the only plus in my book. 1080p is great, my next phone will have it. But, unless I press my nose to the screen I don't think I would notice the difference. At least not me personally.
The other reasons:
1. IMO, phones are really worth updating every other generation.
2. HTC is on 4.1. I am on 4.2 now and 4.3 is launching next month.
3. I am waiting for the next nexus on Sprint. It will happen eventually.
If the upgraded CDMA LTE Nexus rumored does come I still won't switch. If it has 1080p and a better processor I will jump ship though. I love the devs and family like community we have here.

In my opinion, there is nothing to switch for. It's a fairly marginal upgrade over the g. Almost the same CPU, but clocked higher, same for the GPU, slightly better screen, same amount of RAM. It's certainly a great phone, but not a whole lot different than the g. Benchmarks are inflated due to their l2 cache and higher clock speeds.

You have to be kidding me right? You just named a bunch of stuff that, as you say are "marginally" better. Would all those "marginally" better things add up to a whole lot better phone? I would absolutely say yes. And I'm not speaking out my ass, I've owned the LG Optimus G and its not a bad phone but it's definitely isn't in the same league as the HTC One. Why don't you try it instead of just comparing specs side by side which by the way HTC wins in every category.

No lte here yet, so no clue on that. The speaker has been fine for me at least on cm. I was just stating my opinion. Not saying no one else can. It's definitely a great phone and if I didn't have the optimus, I would get it. It's certainly a huge improvement over the evolte and one x. I would just wait until something that kicks our phones ass comes out. It's certainly better, but it's newer, so that is expected. I would say it's the best phone on the market, but it's just not a huge improvement that I would buy it off contact for for example. The snapdragon 800 series will be a huge upgrade, and that is supposed to be here by the end of the year.
Just because it is better, as expected, than the optimus does not mean it warrants an upgrade. If that's all it took, in the two years of your contract, you would have about twenty phones.

I am hording all of the HTC One's!
No but seriously, Majority of the returns were due to the fact that it is not a vast improvement over the LGOG and most people hate Sense but wanted to try the One. I've had a few returned due to getting no LTE signal at all for some reason. Also, one returned due to front speakers not working at all. A few got the One again but most stuck with their old device (LGOG, S3, EVO LTE)

I agree completely, I was excited to consider upgrading to the One. I went into the Sprint store and played with both the S4 and One but I couldn't find anything that either device had to warrant using my upgrade let along moving away from my OG. My OG already has a fantastic screen, smooth performance, good hardware, decent camera (I don't care too much about cameras). And plus the One's screen just seemed so tiny compared to my OG, I HATE that HTC makes the screens so narrow, then to top it off they have the stupid menu bar in certain apps, I just can't dig that IMHO.
Ill be waiting a little while longer with my OG.

That's funny, the screens are the same size (4.7"), but the dimensions can easily change perception of how large the screen is (see the iPhone 5). I agree with you too. Don't care about camera and as far as performance, I am very happy with my Optimus. The current software does not slow it down. Eventually, as always, the software will become more demanding to the point that you'll need a more powerful phone, but for now, I think we're in good shape.
I had the opportunity to wait to get it but, I passed it up, I'm content with this phones power and speed. I asked myself what can the One do that this phone can't do as far as running apps? I couldn't come up with anything. I've been impressed with this coming from an Evo 4g.

General rules mobile devices;
1- A device needs at least a 20-30% increase in specs for it to have a noticeable improvement versus the previous device. Even then, that is considered marginal at best
2- If rule one is not met then a device needs a 20-30% increase in code efficiency. This is rarely ever the case as "new" sells better than "efficient"
3- Repair history, not build quality, is another major factor. In the past 3 years as a Sprint tech I've seen fewer Heros and Optimus S' come in for hard repair than any other Sprint phone. I've seen more Evos (Shift excluded) and GS2's come in for repair than any other phone.
4- Synthetic Benchmarks are BS. The LGOG has pretty good benchmarks but gave only a average of 5fps increase over the Photon and GNex when playing Ingress. (un)Zip tests show a less than 20% reduction in times. Running the LGOG in dual core mode showed it was slower than both the Photon and GNex at the same clock speeds.
5- Development support does not mean good ROM's. Most "ROMs" are nothing more than a theme on top of another devs ROM with minimal actual changes. Fewer devs generally means ROM releases tend to be true ROMs. The fewer the devs also tends to mean more care is put into each release.
6- Reports of signal levels and speeds cannot be trusted in most cases. Unless phones are connected to the same tower and server and tests are run with the phones right next to each other (or in a lab) the variables are so many the results are to be considered null. Even with phones right next to each other the variables are still so many that results are to be considered questionable.
With all these things taken into consideration. The HTC ONE is faster/better but it's not mind blowing. You will find the CPU falls within the 20-30% range for minimal CPU improvement but the GPU has to push 40% more pixels which results in a flat or even degraded performance. The increased ppi will only be noticeable under limited situations.
Now all you are left with is, does it have a better camera, how readable is the screen in direct sunlight and is it's signal reception better. The camera will most likely be better but after a month or two the "new car smell" will wear off. Not sure about the screen as that needs real world testing. The signal reception MAY be better but if it's the difference between walking five feet into a room vs ten feet then the improvement is negligible. I've been in tech for a long time and all I see is "but it's new" vs "a significant improvement in specs". I suggest skipping this generation of phones and waiting til at least 4th quarter if you want a significant improvement.
I have a chance to get the HTC one for free. Its not much of an upgrade from the optimus g but it is a more popular device that will have a much larger Dev base. I'm still keeping my optimus g. Its still a badass phone but probably will just sit in my car as a mp3 player.. Or give it to my roommate. I can't get myself to sell this thing. Its too good to share with someone I don't know lol
But Yea. As soon as stock becomes available I'll be jumping.
If I wasn't getting it for free.. I wouldn't get it. I have an upgrade and will use it on an actual noticeable upgraded device
Epic must have gotten a bad batch. No returns in our store or the entire pacific northwest. As of Saturday. I was off today though..

I knew the One was coming. I'm happy with the Optimus G glad I picked it up and saved a few bucks. But that stock camera app is trash, the focus is beyond awful, glad you guys made some great suggestions. I may have gave it back in the 15 days. That was the only thing. The battery life is rather good for me.
From a usability standpoint these newer devices are quite strong. After nearly 2 years on my EVO3d there was few things that would bring it to its knees (besides android scrolling like crap LOL).
I thought I would try something a bit more vanilla. I flashed the crap out of my EVO3d for 1.5 years eventually I just ended up stock. I felt like I was just chasing that quadrant score unicorn.
Point is I guess, you really can't go wrong these days. Maybe depends on how much you want to flash?

What are the features of this phone to persuade me to buy it?

I'm planning on getting an htc one in the next day or two but I'm still open to different phones. So what are some cool features of this phone other than the big screen?

Well id say the customizability on the stock rom is second to none. Everything down to icons and size on the homescreen can be changed. Looking around this thing ive seen customization options ive never seen on modded roms much less stock. The multitasking with the qslide apps can come in handy here and there. Plus it supports wireless charging out of the box something thats likely impossible on the one due to the aluminum unibody. The camera is better hands down in every review ive seen and while the screen is bigger, it seems brighter and more true to life (only got to play with the one for about 20mins while I waited for a rep at att). Also battery life is amazing I get a full days use no problem. Plus my experience with phones has shown that samsung seriously lacks in build quality and duribility compared to lg. Ive said many times, u wanna see the real difference between lg and samsung take one device from each and throwem down a hallway... while htc has always been a little better, the one seems indestructible lol I spent weeks going between the sgs4, htc one, lgogpro and sony xperia z. Based on the total package and especially price lgogpro is the way to go.

In addition: you get a 1.7 Ghz quad-core CPU, a removable battery, 32 GB of storage with an additional 64 GB available via an SD card slot.
I prefer this phone to the HTC One because of its removable battery and SD card slot.
I prefer this phone to the Galaxy S4 because of its lack of TouchWiz garbage and Samsung shovelware (yes, there is some LG shovelware in this phone, but not much).
Finally, try watching an HD video on this phone's screen. It's almost beautiful enough to make a grown man weep.
I have a one to but its too small coming from the note 2. I used my upgrade and got the g pro. With some mods and tweaks its a great device. If we get this boot loader cracked and get aosp it will be the best device around. I say get it and if you don't like it, trade it in for the one.
The screen on the g pro gets brighter than the one. I have the one and the gpro yeah the one's hardware is sexier sure but the gpro is great for a road warrior like me with that awesome battery. Each phone has its pluses. If u want something that's in between get the s4. I had it for a couple weeks. If u can get past that touchwiz crap it's pretty awesome too. The gpro is my favorite of the 3. That led built into the home button is effing sweet.

You mean the software update that wipes the hand oil off your lens for you? I don't think we'll see any phone updates that do that any time soon.

Xperia ZL or Galaxy S3?

I found a deal that would get me a Galaxy S3 or an Xperia ZL at the same price, the S3 is new, and the Xperia ZL is a used one. I've been having many problems with my Galaxy Nexus lately and am looking for a suitable replacement.
Which one is a better option?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
If ZL is in good condition then you can go for Xperia ZL becoz you will get latest tech spec compare S3, and S3 is now year old device..........
However, Galaxy S3 has an SAMOLED screen (far better blacks and far batter viewing angles), replacable battery and a way bigger developer community. It depends what you expect from your phone.
I had to face the same decision and decided to get the Xperia ZL for the Full HD resolution and hopefully better lifetime of my screen (SAMOLED screens tend to get worse over the course of years).
Greetings
Yeah, coming from a Galaxy Nexus, I was searching for a phone with a great dev support. I like everything about the S3 except the design. And I like the ZL because of it's newer innards and FullHD screen, but I've heard that it's really washed out, color wise..

yeah the display appears washed-out when you don't look directly into the screen but in real life it does't matter much at least for me now its depend you...... i had same problem choosing between this phones but i wanted latest spec so that i can have good gaming experience as well as watching video on 5" Full HD screen its too Good, you can compare both phone online that may help you.....
Get ZL if its in good condition.
Its better than s3.
But just make sure ZL is not opened and repaired...before

Well actually i came from S3, i love the viewing angles, and battery replace. but i decided to buy the ZL and let me tell you. ZL its like 1000 times better than S3 in terms of support, hardware, and even quality and design, viewing angles i dont really care, its not that bad at all. the truth is that the screen it the best screen i have seen on a phone, really 441 pixel per inch and a 5'? wow in a compact design even much smaller than S3.
In other words, go for the ZL if the phone is in excelent condition and never had been opened.:good:
Yeah, I went to a nearby shop and got a hands on of the ZL, really nice phone.
What's the battery like? Screen on with 3g?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
With 3G I'd say 3-4 hours but WiFi I get around 5 hours max.
Screen pixels are awesome but energivore. You'll get used to it tho.
The Sony UI is also a huge bonus over vanilla Android UI. At first I was annoyed by it but now I feel like I'm really using my Android phone for real.
I'd go for the ZL. It feels much better than the S3, and looks much better, too. On top of that, you get a better processor (Snapdragon S4 vs Exynos 4412), a better graphics chip (Adreno 320 vs Mali 400), and twice the amount of RAM (1 GB vs 2 GB). On top of that, you get a full HD screen. There have been complaints about the viewing angles, but I'd say the viewing angles are not as bad as they are made out to be. Viewed top-down, though, the display is really, really good. For some reason--and I've observed this on a couple of units--the ZL's display is better than the Z's (I've actually got to evaluate both side by side with a Z).
So, if the ZL's in pristine condition, I'd say you go for it. Otherwise, if it's been "damaged" to some extent--you know, scratches and stuff--opt for the S3. Because personally, I wouldn't go for a damaged phone, no matter how good it might be specs-wise, and neither would I advise anybody to. That said, if you're going to be using your device heavily, and there's the need to carry around a spare battery, then it's obvious the S3's the best bet for you. So, weigh up your options, see what you need. If you're going to be carrying around a spare battery for backup, you're good with the S3. Otherwise, I'd definitely pick the ZL over the S3.
S3 is good, but ZL it's better, for me. :good:
Zl user here.. I was in similar confusion, well the chose zl over one x plus and s3 mainly its full hd display, I agree that viewing angles are not that great but normally the colors of the display cone out really well, camera though there is a problem with over compression and macro, it gives better results with manual settings, ir blaster is added feature, hardware wise its good too, not too old either. And frankly receiving updates faster than other companies. With every updates its improving, battery is better than s3 for sure. Interface is simple yet beautiful, no bloatware, I have tried most of the high end games, there is a heating issue.
Conclusion at this point of time I would buy zl over s3 or one x plus, or wait for mini version of z1

From 6.7 I got that issue... That's really strange, a repair might just fix that. Didn't get time to do it yet..

Note is different kind of phone. Bigger screen, s pen, these are some added features, which is not there in any of these phones discussed. And all of these are priced at similar range. my suggestion, go to a store use all these phone side by side pick the one you like most, if you are routine phone switcher consider note 2 as is got good resale price of all these phones.

Is the battery life on the One X+ really bad? I'm in love with this phone.

Why did you choose the HTC One over the LG G2?

I keep wondering if I should of went the LG G2 for the screen, processer, battery life, etc.

Because screw bloated TouchWiz and it's crappy aesthetics. Seriously, the LG G2 is the same reason lol
Hardware wise, that LG G2 is amazing though. But those features are useless to me. HTC Sense has enough OEM skin features for me to use my phone daily.

Yeah but if you root and install a custom rom that's hardly an issue. Plus i heard they're getting 4.4 in NOV/DEC.
Metal. Heavy metal. And I looked seriously at the G2. I have had Samsung, used Nova launcher, I was happy with it. There are features this has though..blazing fast, GPS radio locks instantly, some others. I hate the camera, sorry not a fan, HTC could have done better. My Inc from 3 years ago beat it hands down. Heck, I think my old LG VX8300 beat it. Remember the "tank"? I hear that the S5 will be metal, and if it is, I'm leaving y'all. I'm just tired of the soft plastic crap.

Maybe. It doesn't do the purple thing. Pictures just are not very sharp. Out of focus.
I owned a LG phone years ago an old flip phone and was not happy with the build quality as both screens cracked in no time from being in my pocket. Where as my Motorola razr was a tank and could take abuse . Since then I swore no more LG phones . It's a personal choice for me.

Well in this case I wanted both plus I was eyeing the note 3. However with the deal at best buy I snagged this. Plus I signed up for something that allowed me a $50 bb card if I used them to upgrade. Total price: $3.74

I've been a Motorola guy for a long time. When my upgrade rolled around in August, I was extremely happy that Verizon had finally gotten the One. I decided to pick it up in blue while it was on sale for $50 at Best Buy. Kinda regret getting the blue, but whatever..... The build quality is the only reason. It is astounding.
Build quality for sure.
Blue was still better looking than the white imo. If they had black, would've done that all day
