LTE N7 owners: Is anyone having troubles switching between data and wifi - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I have a question for other N7 LTE owners. Is anyone having trouble switching between data and wifi? When I leave a wifi area, I will pick up a connection but no data is sent until after several reboots/switching to airplane mode or maybe just hours waiting and vice versa too but when I connect to my router although I don't have internet I can still access my router's setup page.
Googling the issue I find many other owners of nexus devices (n4, galaxy nexus, n7 2012) complaining of similar issues but no n7 2013 lte owners yet.

So far I have not had any issues switching between WiFi and LTE.

I haven't had any problems with mine but then I switch off LTE (actually 3G with my provider) and switch on Wi-Fi when I arrive in a Wi-Fi area, then switch off Wi-Fi and switch on 3G when I leave it. Unless I'm in or near a dead spot, the 3G picks up a connection in a second or two.
Could it be the difference between LTE and 3G? Or could it be down to your provider?

I am in a 3g area too

So far, I've not had any problems. When I leave my house and ride in the train, I get normal data connectivity, 4G at the larger train stations and 3G at the smaller ones. Then when I'm at university, it connects to the Wifi there. Same thing on the way back home.
German Nexus 7 LTE with a T-Mobile data only SIM card and Elemental X 1.6 Kernel, stock ROM.

Who's your cellular provider? T-Mobile, AT&T, Straighttalk, etc.
Maybe have to do with the carrier.

[Q] Radio Issue Brazil

Hey People,
I bought 2 months ago my Galaxy Nexus on Play Store for this wondeerful price they sell it.
My plan was to bring it here to Brazil and, of course, use it.
But, I used it on T-Mobile network while I was in the USA in Maryland area. The results where very good... Almost always having 3G signal and pretty decent speeds testing on speedtest app.
When I started using it here in Brazil, I had some issues related to HSPA+ speeds.
My carrier (Claro BR) does support HSPA+(some carriers here, don't), and sometimes, I think, the phone just forgets to use HSPA+ and keeps using HSDPA...
I can reach up to 4Mbs on HSDPA and always between 4-8Mbs on HSPA+.
What I normally do is turning on and off airplane mode and the phone starts using H+ again.
I am using I250UILE1 radio and CNA 05192012 nightly w/ 1344-384 Trinity kernel.
I forgot to say that when I turn Wifi off and automatically let my phone connect to DATA connection it fastly connects to HSDPA switches for a little time to UMTS and then switches back to HSDPA and no signal for H+. And I again have to switch radio off and on (airplane mode).
I think I tried almost everything...

Unlocked signal problem?

I just unlocked my lg nitro hd and i either have no signal or 1-2 bars, rarely 3 bars. I also have to search networks and register on t-mobile everytime my signal is gone.
Signal always goes out in about 2 mins and Wifi is working fine.
Network mode is set at LTE / WCDMA / GSM
I'm running cyanogenmod 9.0
Baseband-V10j
I also resetted it to stock and i still get the same signals.
When i slip the sim card into my nexus one, i get 4 bars.
Any solutions?
thanks
Nitro HD doesn't support T-Mobile 3G frequencies, so you will only be able to connect to 2G towers. I'm assuming the distinction is that the Nexus One is connecting to a 3G tower which is closer to you.

No 3g on GS4 T-Mobile?

Hello all!
I have an S4. It's fairly new. I like it and all, good phone. Anyway, my one beef is that I have 2 options for data service - 4g and Edge (no LTE here yet.) I wish that I could use 3g when 4g isn't available (edge is too slow) but nothing I've tried works... APN settings, cell network settings.... It's only 2g or 4g. I live in a reframed area (1900 MHz 3g... Cincinnati) which, according to the phone's specs, it should support. Tmobile support said on Twitter that it wouldn't get any 3g, but I like to take what they say with a pinch of salt, especially since a flagship phone not getting 3g is pretty ridiculous.
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'll give you my best guess. T-mobile doesn't have 4G. They call it 4G, but it's really like 3.5G or HSPA. It will show on your phone as 4G though when you are connected to any "H" network or UMTS bands. When you go into menu> settings> more networks> mobile networks> network mode, you should set it to GSM/WCDMA (auto connect) to force 3.5G or 4G as tmo calls it.
I know this doesn't answer your question per se. Edge or "E" is slow as molasses. Verizon's 3G is almost as slow believe it or not (in my location).
Do you not have WIFI?
Or you can dial *#2263# and you will be in service mode. Choose Lte Gsm. It will force Lte
He doesn't have LTE

Yeah, I understand that it's "3.5G" but there should be 3G too....not just "3.5G" and 2G...I'm wondering if I can get 3G on this and if not, why I don't. I have Wifi but not when I leave the house
In short the answer is no. Tmo has its network and it is the way it is. Were you with a cdma carrier (sprint / Verizon) before? Sounds like that's what you are looking for
GS4
No, AT&T and Cincinnati Bell before, never used CDMA.
I read that when T-Mobile upgraded their network, they replaced their 3g with 3.5g - leaving only a few small pockets of T-Mobile 3g remaining. Oh well, I guess that's why they're adding LTE - will be nice when they finally get their stuff straight around here!
Thanks for your help

I live in an area with lte but recently traveled to another city. While driving on the interstate I was getting anywhere from E (in middle of nowhere), 3G (near the city) and 4G (once in the city). So I know this phone is capable of 3G in area with no lte/4G

Thanks! Must be just T-Mo's network then. At least I'll have 4g and LTE when they finally get it here.

If I remember correctly when t-mo started with "4g" the majority of the phones had 2 radios, one for 2g and one for 3/4g and it is basically the same way still. So you're never going to see anything in regards to 3g only. but even though your data connection icon may say 4g, u could technically be on 3g at the time.

[Q] T-Mobile SM-P607T - cannot connect to 2G/Edge network?

Hello gang,
I picked up a new T-Mobile Note 10.1 2014 edition 2 days ago. So far, everything seems to be great. There is one issue however that seems perplexing. My tablet connects to 4G and LTE networks just fine but for some reason, it will not connect to 2G/Edge networks near my home. I live in a rural part of PA where T-Mobile doesn't have 4G/LTE coverage. My Samsung Galaxy S3 connects to the Edge network near my house without issue. However, my tablet does not connect and simply shows a small X where the signal meter is.
I spoke to T-Mobile tech support this morning and they seem to think that the band covering 2G may be dead. Could this be possible when 4G and LTE work just fine?
Also, the options under Network mode are now limited to 2: LTE/WCDMA (auto connect) and WCDMA only. My SGS3 has a GSM only option which the tablet seems to be missing.
I am running Android 4.4.2. Any thoughts / suggestions?
Thanks!

I can't state this as a fact for the tmo P607T but remember that the tmo 3g version of the
Samsung galaxy tab plus 7.0 had a similar situation. Users were looking to add phone functions
to this device.
Turned out on the xda threads that the tmo tab plus 7.0 had no hardware
to support phone functions as the international version did.

The GSM mode only makes it so you can force the Device into 2g or Edge mode. If you do not want to use LTE just pick WCDMA which is 3g/HSPA+ and GSM(2g/edge). If you are looking to turn off the T-Mobile data part Pull the Sim card out or just put the Tablet into Airplane mode which you can till turn on Wifi. I bought my Note just for Wifi, and using EIP. So i am not using it with T-Mobile Data. getting a data plan on the tablet is a big waste when you can just hotpsot your phone.

Well, it turns out that my tablet is defective. T-Mobile is sending me a replacement. I spoke to several tier 2 techs including one Samsung specialist and they all concurred that the band governing 2g on my Note must be inoperative. Weird right?
Well I got my replacement Note in the mail yesterday and it also will not connect to the 2G/Edge network near my house. I highly doubt I could have gotten 2 bad tablets in a row so there's something else amiss here. Perhaps the specs on T-Mo's website is incorrect and this new device simply doesn't have the capability to go to 2G/Edge or the modem firmware being used is a crippled version.
Very disappointed to say the least; yes Edge is horrendously slow but can be beneficial in a pinch sometimes. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I think you're right; despite unlocking mine and using it on AT&T (which does have better coverage), there's places on my commute where there's 4 bars, yet no data transfer. I've yet to see an "E" or "3G" symbol, either.
I'm thinking about trying to flash the P605M radio, but that'll have to wait 'till the weekend.

Please keep me posted on your results if you do end up flashing the modem. I'd be very interested to see what you discover.
I wonder if this move by T-Mo to cut 2g/Edge compatibility has something to do with their rumored intention of converting all of their 2g spectrum to 4g? Even if that were true though, that precludes using this as an unlocked device in other areas or countries that may only have 2g/3g coverage. What about data roaming?

Well, turns out that I might put that off a little bit later than the weekend- I've since had mine unlocked and as it gets the VZW LTE bands, I'm going to see how well it does on that (VZW drops back to CDMA in non-LTE areas, so I'd be completely without service). VZW LTE is pretty ubiquitous from what I'd seen with my OG Xoom, but if it turns out I lose service on the train in large spots I'll revisit GSM options again.
Besides, I might just flash the radios just to see what happens

Question Cannot Connect to 3G/WCDMA

My 6 Pro (unlocked, rooted, January update) is unable to connect to my carrier's 3G network. My carrier is Xfinity Mobile (uses Verizon's network) and selecting 3G in settings or dialing *#*#4636#*#* and choosing WCDMA only, GSM/WCDMA preferred, etc results in my mobile connection being dropped. I can make and receive calls/texts just fine, and no problems connecting to their LTE or 5G networks. I am using the physical SIM from my old Pixel 3 XL, which had no problems connecting to their 3G network. Are there any fellow Pixel 6 Pro owners out there using Xfinity Mobile or Verizon as their carrier, and if so can you connect to 3G?
I just can tell you what happened in Germany, Operators disabled 3g networks. Maybe the same happens for you now
Aren't they in the process of killing off 3G, especially cdma? Very old tech.
I sure hope that's not what's happening, at least not until LTE coverage is on the same level as 3G. It just seems odd that 3G would be working fine one moment on my 3 XL (I only used 3G on it), then suddenly quit a few minutes later after transferring my SIM to my 6 Pro and getting it set up.

Where are you where LTE coverage isn't good? LTE is starting to be replaced by 5G and LTE is at least 7 or 8 years old by now. Do you live in a rural area?
The 3G Network Shutdown May Disable Your Phone (and More)
Mobile carriers are shutting down their 3G wireless networks to make room for new technology, but this change can have a big impact for anyone on older devices. Starting in 2022, companies like Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile will phase out the older wireless network to accommodate expansion of 5G...

3G CDMA Network Shut off date set for December 31, 2022
We will turn off the last of the 3G CDMA network on December 31, 2022. Customers who still have a 3G device will continue to be strongly encouraged to make a change now.

I found both of those articles. And according to the second, Verizon is shutting down it's cdma network effective December 31, 2022.

The small ski resorts on the east coast that I go to aren't too far from civilization. My 3 XL had no problems picking up 3G at these places.
Do you know if those towers are still doing 3g or they switched them to another frequency? I haven't been on 3g except when traveling in Europe.
Xfinity Mobile's 3G is not GSM/WCDMA but CDMA/EvDo because they're using the Verizon network. That's probably why it's not working. Try using that setting.

I still need to contact my carrier and ask if/where they've started disabling 3G. I would not be shocked if they've started shutting it down near my house, but I would be surprised if the towers near the ski resorts were not still doing 3G. Driving through the small rural towns on the way to the resort is like going back in time 50-100 years. These areas seem like they're last on the list to get any form of infrastructure updates.

Still no luck. I suspect Verizon has started disabling their 3G network in my area, or uses a frequency not supported by this device.

Yeah it should definitely be supported by the modem from the specs I've seen but it's probably being activated as CDMAless now that I think about it because there was an issue early on where chat functions didn't work right unless it was activated that way. There was a whole big uproar on reddit about it with the 5a and then it happened again with the 6/6 Pro.
