Did I "brick" or damage the device somehow? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Howdy y'all,
So I was rooting and flashing and when I tried to flash after successfully rooting the device, I went to wipe everything in TWRP and then flash another ROM. Well, something happened and it gave me an error saying it could not wipe (I think it was OTG something something, it's been 2 weeks now since I did this), and now it won't allow me to transfer ANYTHING from the computer to the device. It will not allow me to create folders, nothing. I have uninstalled the drivers, installed the drivers and tried SO many drivers. Anyone able to provide me a suggestion? The odd thing is on the device itself, I can create folders and everything, but when it connects, eventually, I can open the device from my computer, BUT when I attempt to create a folder, the PC gives me an error dialog saying that the device is not there anymore.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Have you tried using ADB push to get a new rom onto the device? Also I'd do a permission repair
Edit: As a side note, I don't think it's possible that you did actual damage to your device. It's probably just the software that's messed up. If you want a sure way to fix it, try downloading and flashing the stock factory image.

Thanks so much for the reply. I just finished doing a complete stock re-image of the original bootloader and OS, but I'm still getting the same error message. I'll attach an image below of the error I keep getting.
Any more suggestions?

Have you done a wipe data factory reset?
It wasn't clear from what you described.
Bootloadeer wouldn't help and neither would ROM as this problem has to do with /data

Sorry about the lack of clarity. I have wiped multiple times, cleared all caches, dalvik, etc. I have installed and uninstalled ALL devices from USBDeview pertinent to anything ADB or android related.

Have you reconfirmed you are using mtp rather than ptp?
Does your /sdcard show more directories than dcim and pictures when viewed in adb shell?

I am in debugging mode as well as in ptp mode and my sdcard shows that I do have many folders there, however in my computer it is only showing DCIM and pictures.

That's your problem right there. PTP mode is camera mode, so you only get access to a couple of directories. Switch to MTP mode (menu under Settings / Storage).

I've tried MTP mode before and I get nothing. In fact the computer doesn't recognize the tablet is there. It's odd b/c I have done EVERYTHING I can think of and read about to install drivers (multiple kinds, like PDA, android, RAW, etc) and uninstall drivers. It sounds like a driver issue but I don't think it is.
EDIT: ok so after switching to MTP mode on the tablet, I went to device manager and uninstalled the "portable ADP drivers" as some people were saying they had issues that were similar to mine (but not exactly) here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380978&page=1).
After doing so, I unplugged and re-plugged the N7 back in and had it re-install the drivers from the Google USB drivers that I downloaded onto my desktop. That allowed me to get it to work and access the internal SD card on the device. BUT, when I go back into the PTP mode (camera) mode, I still have the same issue where I cannot creat subdirectories, transfer anything to the device AND I cannot see any directories except for DCIM and pictures. Really weird. Both modes obviously worked before I rooted it. Now that I have unrooted and gone back to bare bone stock I am still not getting it to work.

That is how ptp mode is supposed to work.
That is why people prefer mtp mode.

Like I said, that's what you get in PTP mode. You are able to write to those 2 directories though (not the root directory).

No way. PTP mode is restricted on purpose. Here is the commit:

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the continued help and patience. Now that I went back and thought about it, I was only transferring images WHEN it was working before. It is all good now that my silly drivers were all sorted out. Really odd how the drivers just took a crap on me like that. Weird. All is well now though and I can get back to studying my PDF's for school.
Thanks again y'all!

NOOB mistake! Need Help

So I somehow managed to completely delete all the data on my sdcard through TWRP recovery when U was getting ready to flash PA 1.7. I have been flashing roms for many years and am now beating myself over the head considering I have never managed to do this before. So other than the fact that I have just lost an immense amount of important photos and data, I need some advice/help.
So to answer a few questions that I know will come up.
- I have not backed up my internal storage lately (I know *Rookie Mistake*)
Since this is the first phone I have ever had that doesnt have an SD Card is there a way to connect it to a PC and then run a data recovery program..All i really care about is the 1600 photos that I had on my phone of my kids.
My other problem is during this process i had factory reset which means there is no current ROM flashed to the phone so I cant usb mass storage through the rom itself. I have even tried to USB mass storage through the TWRP recovery but it is not working. So from what I can tell is I am screwed at this moment. Please I hope someone can shed some light on this situation.
Thanks

No, the internal storage can't be mounted so you can't run any recovery software on it. From this point forward I'd turn on Dropbox instant upload or Google+ instant upload to upload pictures. You can even set it to only do it on WiFi to save your data cap. It'll just back them up every night at home.

Just use ADB to send the ROM and GAPPS and other files to the phone.
Assuming you have ADB and drivers set up.... Connect to your PC. In the command line, type:
Code:
adb push FILE.zip /sdcard/
and let it go. You won't get a confirmation or anything until its complete. ADB is very slow. It'll take a couple minutes for a large (~200mb) ROM.

Well to be honest I assumed I had adb set up correctly. But for some reason when I plug in the phone, and open cmd prompt. I go to my platform-tools folder and type adb devices i get nothing listed under connected devices? It doesn't seem like my computer recognizes the phone anymore. OMG...so frustrating.. *im that guy now!!!*

Well is ADB updated and installed properly? Do you get anything if you just type "adb" and hit enter?
Its probably a driver issue.
Ok so after a little messing around I was able to get ADB working and am currently pushin ROM files to the phone now. Appreciate the help!! Super bummed about the pictures but like a few of you have said this unfortunately my fault and nothing that can be done. Nowdoes anybody have any advice on how to tell my wife I lost over 1600 photos? She already gives me a hard enough time for always messing with my phone, this is only going to ammo to her already large arsenal. LOL

[Q] Digitizer Broken - Need to retrieve my Data

Hey all,
I'm in a pinch. I see some people on the other phone sections have had a similar problem, but never truly got it sorted out. My digitizer screen has a crack in it and no longer operates, The phone will power on, but I can't actually do anything with it. I'm trying to retrieve all of my media and data off of it to switch over on to my new Nexus. I'm trying this moborobo program but it doesn't seem to be working. It keeps trying to reinstall the drivers. If anyone could be of ANY help, Please I'm pretty desperate! Thank you.
Does the phone not respond when you connect it to your computer? (no MTP stuff, etc.) If you can still access that, then you should be in luck.
If you want to get more stuff off of your phone than just the basic files, perhaps you can do a backup through CWM recovery, since it's not touch-based, and then restore it onto the new phone.

Sounds like you need drivers. Uninstall any drivers for the GNex on your computer, reboot, reinstall known working drivers. There are links in the stickies for the right ones for your device.

[Q] E980 bricked - Computer says "unknown device" - Only boots into Recovery and DL

[Q] E980 bricked - Computer says "unknown device" - Only boots into Recovery and DL
My wife somehow managed to bork her Optimus G Pro. She was running rooted stock, and the phone ended up somehow booting to CWM. She said she "picked a few selections", and the phone won't get past CWM now.
I can't do the mobile flash tool because every time I connect the phone, it somes up as Unknown Device. This is after I updated the drivers on both computers. Tried various ports & USB cables, same thing. MY E980, by the way, shows up fine in Device Manager.
I've tried restoring a previous backup, but it still boots right back to recovery. For some reason, the phone doesn't recognize the external card, or I would have tried making a backup on the other phone with the bootloader included, but I have no way of getting it onto the broken phone, unless I can push it via adb somehow.
Anyway, I appreciate any help anyone can give

Yep, that's the message. I'm running Windows 7.
I'll give it a shot when I get home, but without the device showing up in the com port section of device manager, I can't change the phone over to port 41, right?
I have a TWRP backup from my other E980 that I included the Bootloader option in the backup. Is there any way to push that to the phone using ADB?
I don't know if OP has the same problem as mine. My phone just keep boot into CWM all the time. No matter which rom I flash.

No luck with that post. Followed every step on two different computers, but neither computer will recognize it (keep getting that "unknown device" error in windows).
I saw a post somewhere that someone had luck formatting their system drive in Recovery, but that seems a little bit drastic to me. I'll probably try uninstalling and reinstalling all the drivers again first. And more swearing. LOTS more swearing...

For some reason, it's still not reading either the SD card or recognizing the device on USB, but at least this is progress, and at least I can run the thing.

Files inside of folders showing in TWRP file manager, but not in Windows.

So one month ago my M8 with LineageOS was rebooting randomly, so I decided to try updating. Unfortunately, my phone rebooted while updating, and got stuck in a bootloop. Couldn't find any RUUs for my device, but I found a backup, Tried restoring to it, with no luck, so I gave up. Fast forwarding to now, I realized I followed the instructions wrong and went to try again.
I'm trying to copy the backup to my phone, but the TWRP\BACKUPS folder isn't showing up on my phone, neither the files in most folders (sometimes it shows a Windows hard drive icon, but I can't open it)
I've recorded a .gif of going into the folders, but I can't post it until I get to 10 posts.
Also, I mounted the phone using TWRP, and it says to not unmount it until I remove it safely, but the Safely Remove Hardware window doesn't show the phone. Is it safe to unmount it without removing it safely?
Try going into Windows Device Manager, then finding the phone, and seeing if you can pick the option to manually select drivers. If so, pick the "generic" Android MTP device (forget the exact name, but think it's something along those lines "Android MTP device"). This sometimes helps my phone "see" the storage in TWRP or even in fastboot, adb or even when the phone is booted to OS.

Tried updating how? Updating Lineage, or something else.
Maybe or maybe not directly relevant to the TWRP mount issue, but it may possibly shed some light on how you got to this point; and help find another solution to your 'no boot' situation.

If you gave some details about the phone, we might be able to find an RUU. Do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

It's probably safe to remove the device. There is a small chance the memory can be corrupted, if a file transfer is happening when you remove it. But otherwise, I believe it's "mostly" safe. Honestly, I forget to unmounts this and other devices (thumb drives, etc.) before disconnecting, probably 90% of the time. And nothing bad has ever happened to me. It's really just a precaution, than anything. But if the option to unmounts isn't even selectable, there isn't much you can do to unmounts it. May indicate it's not properly mounted, anyway.
It was updating Lineage, but anyways I flashed Lineage again and it worked (didn't do it before because some people in an Android Discord told me it wouldn't work)

Broken Screen/Digitizer need backup

Dropped phone, broken screen/digitizer, doesn't respond to touch
Was able to see the screen a bit yesterday but now its almost all black. I mainly just need my photos off it. Tried an RMA to replace the screen but they said they had to wipe everything first
Is there any way I can pull the photos off it? I haven't tried an otg yet, but I also can't see the screen, so im not sure it would help
Is there a screen sharing program I could get w/o first installing it on my phone?
I think my phone may be rooted, i forget if i ever did, but i dont have TWRP installed on it? (i dont super know what that is but i see other people talking about it)
Any thoughts on how to pull photos off it? I tried the adb devices but the cmd prompt doesn't seem to recognize the phone
Im quite sure I have debugging enabled, just coudln't get the file transfer button hit
Adb pull command should work, but you need to sort the drivers first (I'm guessing that's the issue).

Sorry, can't give definite answer, I know that I had an issue with drivers (device wasn't properly recognized) and tried pretty much everything that Google suggested ... Until it finally started working. I have no idea exactly what solved the issue, it was over a year and a half ago. The next time I clean installed Windows (10 in both cases) it was smart enough to automatically find right drivers.
So ... I'm guessing Googling something like "OnePlus 3 Windows # drivers" should find something useful?
About image verification: are you talking about anti-bot system that checks if you're human? Wouldn't know much about that, never personally had issues with it, but also very rarely see it on XDA as I'm nearly always checking this forum in Tapatalk app.

If you had earlier connected your phone to the PC and authorised the PC connection on your phone, then it is a simple issue of disabling driver signature verification on Win 10 and installing the OnePlus drivers on it. Search for and download the correct drivers to your PC. Hold down Shift key and restart the PC. Choose Troubeshoot>Advanced Options>Startup Options and click Restart. On restarting, there will be a list of options. Choose 7 in the Options or click F7 on your keyboard and you will boot into the disabled mode. Now connect your phone and go to Device Manager in PC. Choose the phone which may be showing up as Unknown or with an yellow flag and right click and choose Update Driver. Navigate to the downloaded driver and install it. Now your phone should be properly recognised. Use adb pull command to copy whatever files you need to. Note that this driver signature verification disabling is temporary and when you restart the PC in the normal way, the PC will go back to the normal mode. But the installed drivers will still function.
Hope this helps.

Oh wow, do you know if this works on Win7? And also I can't see my screen at all, so could I do adb pull of entire folder or hardrive kind of thing? I mainly just want phots, but i've never done adb stuff so not sure how it works
Had the same issue with my Lenovo P2. Only i didn't have debugging enabled. If you have, screen mirroring should be an easy solution. You could just see ur phone screen on ur computer that way. What helped me was to forceboot the phone to recovery with the hardware buttons, then connect it to ur pc. TWRP will automatically launch MTP. When u backed up evrything, you can wipe ur device through adb

I don't know about Win 7. It will work on Win 10. Most likely, this should not be needed in Win 7 at all as the drivers should install whether signed or not.
Regarding copying data, a simple command of "adb pull /sdcard" will copy all the folders, files, data etc to your PC. You can also specify where you want the data copied to, simply add the path to the command above. This will work whether your screen works or not. Of course, there are other methods of copying data, you can search for it if you need it.
