I picked up an Epic today, and for the life of me, I cant seem to get things to flash right. I'm no stranger to this sort of thing (G1, MTS, HD2, NS4G)... but this phone is just giving me trouble.
First time I tried things, I followed everything here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091680
The oneclick worked without a problem, the rom appeared to flash fine in clockwork, but would not boot. I'd get the samsung logo, then a black screen, and there i'd sit. Couldn't get past it. After several wipes and reflashes, I decided to start over and Odin back to stock.
So now, on round two, I followed this instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076967. Same idea, just, as I understand, a newer version of clockwork? Again, root and clockwork installed fine. I followed the instructions to convert to EXT4 to the letter, which all went without error. I then flashed this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=873347. I made sure to get the EXT4 version. Flashed, rebooted, and it gets stuck at the Samsung logo.
So, odin back to stock again. Can anyone help me try to figure out what I am missing here? I've followed all instructions completely to the letter, and the best I can tell I'm using the correct roms. Any ideas?
Maybe simple, but I know in the clockwork menu when you are flashing the rom there are two choices that look similar. One is update and one update from zip. Make sure you are choosing the right one.

I'm choosing the right one. I've got plenty of experience finding my way around clockwork, which is why i'm so baffled as to why this isn't working. I'm no stranger to the steps involved here. Either I'm not understanding something, or i'm flashing the wrong roms. Just trying to figure out where i'm going wrong.
What ROMS have you tried?

Just two two linked in the first post.
So, I got the RFS version of Supernova to flash (but without root?). My problem seems to be lying within EXT4. Any ideas?

If you used CWM 3.0.2.5 it does not convert to EXT4. You have to run another script to convert before flashing an EXT4 ROM. You have to flash the ROM before booting right after the conversion.
Try running this script from CWM just make sure you have the ext4 room you want to use on the card LOL yes I have made that mistake DOH!

Try using clockworkmod 3.1.0.1 and flash sfr 1.1.1 again.... On sfr 1.1.1 do NOT wipe anything before you flash

Appears to have worked this time, its booting now. Thanks for the help guys!
Well... I broke it. I'm rather confused by how things work with this phone.
I did what ya'll said, and as told, did not wipe (despite reaaaally wanting to.) The rom booted and such, but I had lots of problems. I attributed this to lack of wiping. I really wanted a fresh go.
So, I decided to try again. I wiped and reflashed this rom. Now... won't boot again, just sits on a black screen. I don't get it. Why am I not allowed to wipe data when using this rom?

+1 what he said also after u flash you might want to enable journaling

Where your phone seems to be a little temperamental I would recommend it for the best experience.
It says on the rom page not to wipe... I didnt wipe coming from midnight rom and acs script took care of everything while flashing... I havent had one fc and no problems yet.... I wonder what the issue is

Decided to just completely start from scratch. I did exactly this:
Odin back to stock
One-click 3.0.2.5
RFS2EXT4
Flash SFR-1.1.1
Didn't wipe anything, this is ALL I did. This worked. I still don't understand why I had all this trouble in the first place? Is it the phone, or am I doing something I shouldn't? It seems like the issue is with wiping before flashing. So, what happens if I want to try a different ROM? I can't imagine I need to Odin back to stock every time...

What does this do? Doing a google search gave me instructions on how to enable/disable journaling, but it's not a term i'm familiar with and nothing actually explained why I'd want to do this.
This issue is with stock EC05. It has something weird going on especially the OTA that requires wiping. Same for the new Bonsai release, wipes only needed colming from stock EC05.
Do you BONSAI?

Journaling allows for the extra write to the phone so there is no corruption if you have to pull the battery or you drop it and the battery falls out. If it is not enabled then you might get a lot of FC's after replacing battery and booting up. Also FYI with this phone when you shut it off and the screen is black and the home lights are out it is NOT truly OFF until you fell the quick VIBRATION then it is truly off.
You shouldn't have to go back to stock each time but it seems that you might be having some other issue. You using the stock USB cable? Might want to get a good one from a store other then Sprint. Just a suggestion I have seen a ton of issue's related to the stock cable.

This one shows how to get back to gb...You just need the ics stock md5. Basically, open odin have your battery out of the phone when opening odin (phone unplugged of course), put phone into d/l mode, find pda file you want to use, hit start. That's basically it.

Kies not connecting after upgrading to Jedi Mind Trick
I'm new at rooting, and custom roms, but I finally installed my first custom rom. I installed Jedi Mind Trick, and it works really great! The only main problem I'm having is that I can't connect to Kies, its giving me an error: "This device is not supported by Kies 2.0". Also apps tend to crash sometimes, but that's not a major issue. I really want Kies to connect so I can restore my notes, and msgs. I was also wondering is there a way to backup all the folders on the Home screen. Thanks in advance!

You are no longer on a stock rom, KIES is no longer your friend, nor will you be able to use kies until you go back to stock. The best idea would be to return to stock, move all info back to the phone that you need, re-root the device (stock root initially), use TB or RomToolbox (i prefer the latter personally but it's up to you). Then reflash back to JMT and restore said apps that you created a back up with.
I'm sure there is an easier way, but I truly can't think of that answer right now, and being new to rooting, you might as well get the practice with odin and your recovery now, because once you start it's worse then crack or meth, or something addicting lol

I usually use Rom toolbox, or titanium backup in your case, to back up my messages before I root, then you can just restore them when you flash a new rom.

Hey guys, first time Android user here.
I got my phone on release day...a few weeks later I decided to root it. Went very smoothly with no issues, then I accepted an update and lost the root so now when I try to root again I always end up with all kinds of stop errors. Anyone have any thoughts on why that might be? Ive tried restoring my phone to factory settings and rooting but it makes no difference, always blows up with error after error.
Saying you reset to factory settings, did you ODIN back to stock?

I would strongly suggest using the ODIN method back to to stock, and then start your rooting process again

Try clearing you contacts cache, under application manager.
That helped me when I got this error. Never got it again.

I'm on a VM Epic 4G, stock, unrooted(because I can't figure out how to root it), is there anything I could do to help provide stock firmware for this phone?
I'll admit I'd probably need to be guided through it, because without CWM/Titanium/anything needing root installed on my phone I wouldn't really know where to start making a backup, but I'm willing to try anything that won't cause physical damage to my phone, including risking a brick because I've still got over three weeks left to return/exchange my current phone.

Rooting it is actually easy:
1) Grab Agat's Repacked kernel:
[UPDATE][KERNEL][SOURCE] FI27 AGAT_v0.6.8 with tREC_v0.2.2 11/07/12 - xda-developers
The H/W is exactly the same between Sprint, Virgin and Boost so it will do the job.
2) Grab this file and put it on either microSD card or internal storage:
http://garwynn.rainmotorsports.net/subusybox.zip
3) Flash Agat's kernel by Odin or Mobile Odin Lite.
4) Boot into recovery (Vol Up + Power)
5) Flash subusybox.zip
6) Reboot
... and profit!

Worked like a champ for me. I'm not in a 4G coverage area, though, so I can't tell you if Agat's kernel affects 4G performance at all. Looking at that thread, it looks like some people have been having 4G issues but he's working on an updated kernel to try and solve the problem. If 4G is a huge deal for you, you should probably wait on this.

One click is referring to how an item is packaged.
Meaning, it's a simple executable Odin package used to flash an item to your phone.
Most of the time, when someone refers to using a one click, it has all three items needed. Kernel, modem and rom.
Although, one click could simply mean the package itself.
Follow the link and you can flash the no data on top of what you have and end up with stock kernel/recovery as well. Looking for just the kernel. Will link once I find it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35073538
: edit: Here is just the kernel, one click package.

Thank you so much!
Background - I took the OE1 update and faced the same issues with flashing that have been so widely discussed. In my attempts to revert I tried Odin, which failed every time, and restoring my most recent TWRP backups, which failed to boot. I was able to flash AOSP ROMs and assumed I'd be restricted to their use until a fix was found.
About the same time that the Noterized ROM and the latest emotion kernels were found to work, I was playing around with my older TWRP backups, one of which included every possible option including boot, modem, EFS, etc.
The first time I restored the entire back up and it wouldn't boot. Then I tried just restoring the modem and EFS, then flashing the Hybrid-X ROM and the latest emotion kernel figuring at least I'd have a working system. Strange thing was my baseband showed up as OB7 in settings.
I got excited and immediately made a backup in TWRP and tried to Odin the base OB7 ROM. It failed. So still using Odin I rerooted and installed TWRP again. Then restored my backup. Baseband still showed OB7.
So I decided to experiment and wiped my phone thoroughly (factory reset X3, format data X3, advanced everything but extsdcard X3, then flash Uberwipe.zip) and when TWRP had restarted I flashed the Echoerom TW ROM from mid march. No current kernels, no mods of any kind, just the base ROM. I walked away to finish a chore and 20 minutes later I returned to find, to my immense pleasure, that the setup screen was waiting for me.
So I can verify, at least for my phone, that if you have taken the OE1 update, but have a full OB7 backup (you backed up every option there is) in TWRP, it IS possible to restore the modem/radio firmware and flash any OB7 TW ROM you wish through TWRP!!!
Odin will still fail if you try to do more than root or install TWRP, but access to all OB7 ROMs is possible after the OE1 update has been taken.
Moral of the story for me - ALWAYS have at least one backup that contains everything in TWRP.
Thanks for posting this, it gives me hope. I have two Note 4's I purchased used about a week ago (one white, one black)... I needed to get MSL for both so I downgraded through odin to 4.4.4 (worked on white, not on black). After researching a bit more on here I realized the non-working Note 4 probably has the OE1 update - so this would explain why it's in a boot loop & not working....
Unfortunately I did not take a full TWRP backup of either phone at the time...
Steps I have tried to get my non-working Note 4 working again:
-attempted multiple odin restores (no dice of course)
-installed TWRP via odin
-attempted OE1 nandroid restore that was uploaded by you (lol) @ forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60983327&postcount=55
-wiping 3x (everything but extSD) & install Noterzied rom via TWRP (I read this should work, but does not for me, black/blank screen on boot)
Why didn't the Noterized rom work for me?
Can I create/restore via TWRP using the working Note4 on the non-working Note4, or is that a bad idea?
Not quite sure exactly where to go from here... thanks!
UPDATE: I downloaded uberwipe, created a fresh 'full' nandroid backup of the white Note 4, then restored it to the black Note4 - now it is working!
.
Not overly familiar with nandroid backups... It would be interesting if one could be developed as a backup for those who took oe1 without making one?

If you rooted while on OB7 and took a full nandroid, you could restore it then flash any OB7 ROM. But Odin would still be broken as far as stock tars are concerned.
Still an unknown if flashing baseband and bootloader from another individual's nandroid from OB7 is enough to accomplish same result. Maybe someone will post here when/if a working solution is found. I didn't confirm it but someone had posted baseband flash was a working solution on another note 4 forum.
If not, flashing Noterized Stable release 1 is the only TW custom ROM I'm aware of ATM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60506574
Nah, it hasnt been rooted before, kinda been holding off but damn phone been kinda goofy lately so i figured it was time to go ahead and get it cleaned up and root while i was at it. Thanks ill go check out that Notarized

So, if I flashed Tx's stock, rooted, de-knoxed and de-itson rom, made a nandroid (minus EFS) it could be used to get OE1 folks back to OB7?

From what I understand, it may allow them to flash OB7 ROMs but Odin would still be broke as far as stock tars are concerned.
I believe there was a recent request for a nandroid sans the data and EFS partitions.
I don't think stock-ish was the request. Maybe Noterized or Hybrid X with latest Emotion kernel would be more likely to work?

Drop him a PM if he doesn't chime in soon.
Thanks for the effort. Maybe someone will find it useful or worth a try?

Ok, I'm just about ready to start a thread with the DL link. I'll come back here with a link to that thread.
Here's The HYBRID-X 2.2 Nandroid For Those On The OE1 OTA Download Thread
Going to shutdown the link temporarily... Be back up ASAP. Have a report of boot issues
Go Here And Follow The Link In The N910P XDA Note 4 General Section.

Spent yesterday trashing and fixing my phone. I figured out that I didn't revert the baseband through a TWRP restore. (I have an OE1 base backup and I flashed the modem from that half a dozen times and it never changed to OE1 baseband). That means it must have been through one of the Odin flashes I did (that failed, but apparently AFTER writing the modem.bin)
Does anyone have an OE1 modem.bin? I can pull the boot.img from my TWRP backup, but the modem isn't stored in a bin format. I need one so I can test my theory.
Or, if there is a brave soul out there, I made an Odin flashable tar file of the OB7 modem and the r16 emotion kernel. I have flashed it multiple times on my phone with no issues. I know it changes the kernel because I have another file with the OB7 modem and the OB7 stock kernel that I was using as a base.
If anyone is willing to try the OB7modem/emotion kernel file and report back you can download it here.
As you can see from the following pic my bootloader is OE1 my baseband is OB7 and I'm running Hybrid-X 2.2
Actually. If dreamingwolf could post a nand of his current backup minus data and efs we would be golden. I think?

It's uploading to Google Drive as I write this. As soon as it finishes I will edit in the link.
Fair warning though, I run Nova Launcher at 480dpi. If you are used to the default 640dpi, everything is going to appear tiny. You will need to edit the screen density line of the build.prop to change it.
EDIT: I just pulled the data, cache, and EFS then zipped the folder (so you don't have to create your own this time). The file can be downloaded here.
Lmao. I do too. Usually especially when on aosp

I'll try and get it pushed to Android File Host later today.
And I had a thought as I was waking up this morning. When I first got my baseband reverted to OB7 I had been flashing a lot of failed tars through Odin and I ended up also rerooting and reinstalling TWRP. So I wonder if it would work better if, as a starting point, the modem/kernel got flashed, immediately followed by CF-AutoRoot, followed by TWRP, then go into TWRP to wipe and flash Hybrid-X.
