Just posting this so everyone knows what's going on. On Sunday I was having the worst time figuring out why my phone couldn't lock onto a GPS signal, and now that I've heard this the issue seems to be fixed. I ran a quick fix on some GPS apps and all of them seemed to work (GPS Doctor, GPS Test, GPS Status).
Reports have been said that some meteor passed by earth (?) or a solar storm hit a group of satellites.
Hope this clears up the confusion.
Yeah, glad everything is back to normal now >10s locks

I run the ZIP file doing something to gps.conf file and got GPS fix immediately after that. Before that restarted phone several times, etc.

Nor mine. Tested on Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S Plus.
Had issues. Generally fixed now. Sometimes slow but usually locks now.

Reset aGPS data in tools with this and then download the extra data in tools:

toggle google location services off then on, finally got it working again for me today after it quit again. worth a shot for those still having issues...
I've posted this elsewhere, but we had a solar storm this past weekend.

Google may have had issues with the gps satellites. Just my two cents.

Already did so number of times with no luck. Also i have added proper servers to gps.conf - doesn't help either.

I haven't enabled that option ever because of privacy concerns. And i don't need it after all.
Fixed here, didn't make any attempt to try myself.
Hi,
Has anyone got the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (4.1.1 aka Jelly Bean) to lock on to the GPS without using a SIM? I am using this phone for the first time. I am on a Wifi Connection and outside my house (no overhead obstacles), but I cannot get the GPS. I can get Google Maps, but it cannot connect to the GPS. I have also tried NavFree USA and it says “Poor GPS”.
I’d be grateful for any ideas.
O. O.
Get GPS status and let it run while you're connected to WiFi
It will download agps data and that should help with your GPS issue

I have no clue what I did (might be I touched some hidden setting) and the GPS works perfectly. I talked to someone else who said that if you have a brand new phone (which I have), the GPS takes a while to lock on the first time. I think this was the situation with me because when I got the GPS to work, I was out of my Wi-Fi range. (I was in my car on the road with NavFree USA app.)
Thanks again guys.

Hi I have a data plan with Rogers so the a-gps should be picking location with maps or waze. I was driving this morning but the gps was searching the whole time. I was on 4g during this time. All 3 of the boxes under location services are checked.
Thanks for any ideas
Depends heavily on the position inside your car.
The closer to a window or the windscreen the better. Try holding it up to the drivers window for a few seconds and see if it locks on.
Even the best GPS isn't going to work if it's completely shielded from the satellites by the metal roof.
Restart GPS Navigation app or Restart phone helps.

Should not have to restart your phone every time you want to use navigation.
I am having the same issue.
The GPS icon won't even display in the info bar without a restart.
Do you think this is a hardware or software issue ??
I notice about once a day on average that the gps icon will show up in the status bar. Sometimes it's only for a second or two and sometimes it's there for a couple of minutes. One time I saw it and it just seemed to last forever (I didn't time it but I'd guess 15-30 minutes).
I've gotten messages a few times about apps not being able to access location services. I don't use maps very much but I had it open the other day and it just froze up on me. No message about gps but I didn't keep the app open very long after it was obvious it wasn't going to work.
I'm on rogers in Ottawa.
Edit: Just played around in maps/navigation and gps flat out doesn't work. It was using cell tower triangulation and searching for gps the whole time. I had to turn on wifi to get an accurate location.

Anyone have a home made solution or is this a warranty issue?

So, after I posted last night I went out side and checked my GPS. Sitting on the steps infront of my building I conected to GPS in google maps and navigation right away - it worked like a charm.
Then I noticed it said "4G" instead of LTE in the status bar. I live downtown surrounded by buildings and I drop to "4G' on my front steps like 90% of the time. So, I get up and walk down the block and my LTE kicks in. Low and behold, I lost GPS. It only happened briefly but I lost the signal during the switch. Then I read that the note 2 only has a-GPS and lacks regular GPS. I don't know a ton about this stuff but I did read that connecting to GPS can sometimes be an issue if you only have a-GPS and your connection sucks.
Hopefully this is something that can be fixed with a software update. Who knows, maybe this is why those of us with the I317/I317M are the last ones to get the OTA update. I'm gonna call rogers today and let them know about the issue and see what they say. I don't wanna go through the hassle of exchanging my phone if every handset has this issue right now.
Are you using the Perseus kernel? If so GPS does not seem to work correctly regardless of which location provider is used. I reverted to stock and my GPS works.

I am not sure if everyone is having this defect with their phone. I hear some phones lock instantly on gps signal even indoors. Can you let me know what Rogers tells you after you call. Would be appreciated. Thank you.

My Rogers Note 2 has no problems with GPS at all. If you're all stock and have spotty connections, than it's your area. Tall buildings would probably hinder GPS fixes initially.
Rogers here unlocked . Telus network. Rooted and themed and modded. GPS works wonderfully.

Right now I'm stock/unrooted and I intend to stay that way for the time being. I'll be heading to the mall later so I'll pay a visit to the Rogers store and Wireless Wave (awesome third party wireless store in Canada - they really know their ****) and see what they say.
I have the bell version. Just tested on lte. In my house locked on in 4 secs with no wifi.. Gps works great on my phone.

Sorry I took so long to respond but I got sucked in to the mall lol.
So, long story short. Nobody has any clue and the unusually clueless staff at the rogers store (casual Christmas employees) basically said I need to talk to Samsung cuz my 15 days are up. The guys at wireless wave hadn't heard anything about anybody having any issues with gps. Finally, I went to Telus and found someone who actually had a clue and she said it was the first she'd heard of it and actually recommended I check xda.
On my way home now and then I'll call rogers. I'm not hopeful about the outcome lol.
Stay tuned...
I'll post back again when I

Curious to know what rogers says to you ! :good:
Hello folks,
Just an update .. I have been playing around with waze (free at the appstore) for the last day and a half and my gps has been flawless.
Our GPS issues could more then likely be with the actual Navigation app that comes pre installed.
By the way Waze seems to be very impressive I must admit :good:
I used something similar to that app posted.the ones I have is called gpstest.showing 0 satellites for me.like another poster said, should not have to restart the phone or flash firmware on it for GPS to work.it should work otb
Thanks for the feedback

Interesting... I've had this issue happen only once. Nothing I did would start a GPS search. I waited about 2 hours outdoors in a car. Once I restarted the phone, it had a lock on lots of sattelites within 10 sec.
It hasn't happened since.

Download GPS Status and Toolbox from Play Store. If you search for gps it'll be one of the first apps listed.
Don't know why, but my phone locks faster when I have it.

No seriously, provide a little more information and we can help you. There are lots of different gps tweaks. What version/ROM are you on? Carrier? Country?
I have the same problem (4.2.2 Stock). GPS just doesn't work. I tried a lot of stuff (including factory reset)... and nothing.

If you haven't done already: verify all location settings are turned on in the settings menu as well as in t the Google settings app. Download GPS status app. Go outside. Fire up the app and let it try to acquire. If that doesn't work, in gps status reset agps data, download agps data and try again. Did this work?
If you're rooted, you can just flash a better radio. That's what I did and it has improved drastically.
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405345
If it's a fresh fix it can take up to 5 or 10 minutes at least, outside.
Start maps and make sure gps is attempting to acquire location and just wait. But be outside.

That's what I thought because I did not change my ROM or any other settings. Simply flashed a different radio.
What could the reason be then?

I would imagine coincidence.
Clear AGPS data with GPS Status as mentioned and use FasterGPS to change your region to North America or wherever you live. That should provide you with a faster fix.
My GPS suddenly on the fritz as well
Had the GSM Gnex about 10 months. Approx 10 days ago I start noticing the GPS status bubble in the notification bar (not filled in). I've messed with it, used a couple of the tools mentioned in this thread, no help. I've done power off, factory reset last night, all no help. It appears slow to find sats, never acquires. Stock 4.2.2 unrooted.
Any chance reloading 4.2.2 would help? Any advantage to doing so over factory reset?
Still under warranty I guess, but really prefer to solve myself if possible.
Thanks!

No, as mentioned in my original post, it slowly seems to find a couple satellites sometimes (last night in hotel running "GPS test", but never acquired).
Maps don't acquire. Today, inside or outside at lunch, couldn't even get it to find a satellite with "GPS status" app. The circle just spins and it says "looking for GPS location". I only gave it about 90 seconds outside as I was walking.

I assume you have an active sim and the phone has data service?
One last diagnostic - try to let the gps acquire outside for up to 10 minutes. If that doesn't work I'd recommend flashing back a factory image. If the factory image doesn't work you've got a hardware issue.

Yeah, SIM/phone works fine, just sent a test email now w/wireless off to ensure data is good, it arrived.
I'll try to reload JDQ39 tonight after work, already downloaded it last night.
Thanks for the help/recommendation.

One last thing, did you verify that ALL location settings are still switched on? Verify in the Google settings app.
I have found the first real issue with the M8.
The GPS fails during navigation and cannot get proper lock. That meant it kept trying to recalculate routes etc...
My friends have also had same issue.
Location settings were set on the best option too. Full mobile signal and internet as well.

Google navigation and TomTom both failed on different M8s.
It works for a bit, but when it goes wrong you will know about it.
I am hoping only software, but I have no idea of issues or how to fix it.
If you are rooted or unlocked, try this GPS config ... its for quick good AGPS lock before actual GPS one.

I'm not adversed to anythng BUT I have just bought a £500 plus phone. I would rather not void a warranty yet.... also some of my apps won't work on a rooted device.
I have no problem on my phone. all is ok.
GPS has been the best I've ever experienced on a smartphone. Locks quickly and accurately and the only device ever to get a decent lock inside my concrete flat.
However, yesterday the GPS failed completely whilst driving with clear view of the sky. A reboot fixed it and it was then rock solid again.
That's the only time it's done it in about a week since owning it with about 20 hours driving with it.
I'm hoping that means it's a software issue somewhere.

Yep gonna agree works perfect with copilot. Also better than sygic imo. I also wouldn't bother with Google navigation. Better to use an offline satnav app.
I have this problem too... Doesn't seem to matter which app one are using, it also happens with my golf app... And the only way to fix it, is to reboot the phone.. This is really annoying...
It seems to be related to bluetooth use... If I use BT to play music/listen to audiobook at the same time as I use the navigation app, then I have this problem.. If I turn off the BT, then the problem does not seem to appear... I am saying seem to, because it seems to be random when this occurs so not 100% sure that turning off BT fixes the problem but so far I have not had this problem when BT is off..
I also thought this was fixed in the latest update but yesterday it happend again....
