When you make or get a voice call on LTE, does your phone disconnect from LTE and switch to 3g/H? Just wondering if this is normal?

Yes perfectly normal.
I believe its due to either LTE being Data only or LTE not being able to do Data and voice at the same time. I forget which one it is.
I think it's only data for now

It's actually because lte is being used as HD voice. I'm trying to disable HD voice to see if it changes the behavior.

LTE is data only for now. You're gonna have to wait for VoLTE (Voice over LTE)

That doesn't make sense though. If LTE is data only, then it would use LTE for data, and use 4G or anything else for voice, allowing you to have both voice and data.. Unless the radio can only support one frequency at a time then it would force it to use 4G or the next available frequency.
http://m.computerworld.com/s/articl...telephony_apps?mm_ref=https://www.google.com/
VoLTE will enable that... Right now the phones have to have two radios enabled at the same time... One for data and one got voice.

Is there a way to only have 4g lte and the radio for calling and texting or do you have to have 3g on as well. I have perfect 4g and don't need 3g on but I do need to text and all I see is 4g/cdma which turns up to me 3g and Lte only, can't send messages. Any helps appreciated.

You did not specify what carrier you are on. If you are on verizon the answer is no, verizon still uses 3g for voice. I am not even sure this question applies to any other carrier except maybe sprint.

How would it? They are separate NATIONAL carriers, not regional.

So you wouldn't be able to have say, lte on and 1x radios on? This wouldn't be more batter efficient than 3g and lte?

That has nothing to do with it. There for a time, Sprint was piggybacking off of Verizon to actually have decent coverage. This was EvDo and voice only however. This is still the case, but you will not be able to do the same with LTE.

1x and EvDo are on the same radio. So you couldn't shut off just 3G, and the OS won't let you do LTE only either.
Nope.
Call, SMS, MMS use 3g
Only data uses 4g now.

Close.
Calls, SMS use 1x which is a voice only channel.
MMS and the rest of data use 3G and LTE.

Because the phone sending voice and messages through the GSM/CDMA/WCDMA (Depending on availability).
The 4G specifications arent complete as for yet, only the data mechanism has been approved.

You don't turn off 3G.
Is there a way to do this and if not is there a way to do by rooting the phone? What is the best and simplest way to root the phone if need be. Like a stock root by just rooting it without flashing new ROMS.
I have decent 4G LTE coverage like 2 or 3 bars but my 3G coverage is like 3 to 4 bars so it keeps switching over to 3G. When I am in the right spot like upstairs rather than downstairs the 4G LTE is blazing fast. If I had a program to keep it on 4G LTE downstairs that would be great.

That won't stick.
And you can't force LTE only even with root.
LTE is data only, how are you going to receive calls and texts?
Dialer>*#*#4636#*#*> You have to have MSL number which I can't get on the Galaxy Nexus Sprint Version. And also I heard that it does not give you an LTE only option just the same one in the system [LTE / GSM].
Also I don't care whether I can make or receive calls. When I just want to use the phone for DATA at the moment I use Foxfi so I can just use it as a wifi hot spot. When I am done I can put it back on to 3G.
Anyone know how to get the MSL number for Sprint Galaxy Nexus?
Also you are telling me with root or no root there is no way to force the phone to stay on 4G LTE? I find that hard to believe and if it is that is sad.
It is not possible to do LTE only on this device.
Why is that? Can anyone create an APP for it or is it hardware?

Is there no way to build a ROM/kernel from AOSP that has the CDMA radio disabled? does the LTE radio require the CDMA radio to be transmitting?
Exactly, I mean if the radio can be on 4G and not 3G why can it not stay on 4G? Is it still on 3G when it shows its on 4G like on both of them on at the same time? And if that is the case can you force the weaker 4g as primary and leave 3G on in the background?
Anything at all here? Will some of the apps on the market work for the Nexus? What if I get msl code and use 4G only in that? Has anyone tested that?

It uses 3G and 4G concurrently, if not how are you going to receive calls and texts?
Like I already said, changing it to LTE only in the *#*#4636#*#* menu won't stick, regardless of whether you are rooted or not.

part 2 still stands.
Yes I do not care about voice calls. If I want to download a movie or something I do not have to have calls during that time. So has anyone found any new information or app that will perform this function to Force 4G on the Galaxy Nexus? Again I do not care about Voice Calls.

All the Mifi hotspots can be set to do LTE only. This should definitely be possible especially since support for voice through data is right around corner.
Okay I rooted my phone, and got MSL code, but now when I go through all the settings I still do not have LTE only setting just hybrid as my last option. I have been reading some forums and some people with Sprint phones have LTE only option. Is this true? Do I need a paticular ROM? Anyone figure this out or have any idea?

This works on my Galaxy Victory for Virgin Mobile.. it does mean you can't recieve calls but I use it anyway..
Download an app in play store called "Show Service Mode" - costs a little $
Open the app
Select the third box to create a shortcut
Go back to the main screen and click the new shortcut
Select LTE band preference
Then select LTE ALL
DONE!!!
To switch back to normal open the same shortcut and choose automatic

I am thinking purchasing this phone in the next week or so and I have a question for those that already have it. I have had people (even from sprint) tell me that you can use the data with wifi OFF and place a phone call at the same time and some people (even from sprint) tell me you can't. Basically can you download a app while in a phone call with wifi OFF? thanks for your help.

Also articles like this one and other posts like this one. There is a 14 day return policy with Sprint so if you're in an area that has LTE, you can test. If it doesn't work, return it within the 14 days and you're good.

If somebody had a gs3 in one hand and a note II in the other and explained everything about them, and the last thing they told me was that I cant post on my wall while talking on the phone with the note II. I would still buy the note II with all the features and power this phone has.
From what I gather the reason this only works on LTE or Wifi is that the data is used from those, the 3g is used for talk during the call so it can use its secodn set of of antennas for data.
There are other phones with Sprint that have dual cdma chips in them (ie LG Viper)

The 3g uses the same network as voice (ie CDMA) only one can use it at a time, either voice or data. However 4g wimax and 4g lte use a different network so therefore you can surf and talk simultaneously. Unless the phone has dual cdma chips in them to do 3g and talk simultaneously which few of sprints phones are equipped with.

if you disable 1x/cdma, you will not have voice.

it already does this if you're in a LTE area.
It still drops to 3G when I have low LTE signal. I'm always in an LTE service area or on WiFi so I don't want CDMA data at all.
