Unfortunately S voice has stopped working - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I rooted my galaxy s4 and deleted a few of the apps that I do not use and now when I try to use s-voice the screen blinks and goes black for a few seconds and then goes back to my home screen with a message that says unfortunately, s-voice has stopped. I have tried to clear app data, force closed and rebooted but the error still exists. I have installed another s-voice .apk but it says network error and closes. Any help in restoring the svoice functionality would be greatly appreciated

Reflash the rom and get it working properly, then if or when you decide to delete apps instead
of deleting them, rename the app extender from .APK to AP_ just in case something does not
work properly so you will have a backup next time.
Then instead of deleting or renaming many apps all at once, do only 1 or 2 at a time then check
the phone out for a couple days to be sure that everything is working properly.
Many of the samsung touchwiz apps depend on more than just a simple apk that's why S voice
stopped working for you.
If you are on the original stock rom you will need to Odin flash it unless you are interested in
flashing a custom pre-rooted rom using cwm or twrp recovery.
If you decide to flash a custom rom, give the Wicked v7 a try, it's a excellent full feature custom
rom which is already debloated so you would not need to delete or rename any files.
Good luck!

why Wicked v7 and not v10

just read your post and want to say thank you, i have the same problem and many posts suggest chaton / other apps caused this (although i installed them again from play store) , only 1 has been working for me , but when i reboot it return to give the message the OP has described.
(any idea why , i'm curious samsung does some kind of validation on root on restart ??)
so i consider maybe reflashing the stock rom but maybe another - but i really don't have any experience with this and i'm afraid to brick it.
so long story short (with lots of questions) why to take v7 and not 10
thanks again

For the Tmobile M919 Samsung Galaxy S4 the Wicked v7 is the newest/latest version.
There is NO version 10 of the Wicked rom for Tmobile M919

Unfortunately there is no Wicked rom for the i9500 international Galaxy S4.
But there will be a custom Wicked rom for the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 later on today here in xda for the Tmobile people.
If you want to flash an excellent full featured custom rom for your i9500 give Omega v14.1 custom rom a try.
Here is the link for the Omega custom rom for the i9500 Galaxy S4 phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232887

thanks for the info.
maybe you can explain why after restart the s voice is not working but if i reinstall it - it works just fine .(i described above)
i'm very curious to know why
thanks again

Not sure about the rom as I flashed 3 or 4 last night in an attempt to find one that worked but the recovery is Clockwork mod. It either says it's not compatible with the device on GB ROMs or it gets stuck on the "processing" screen.

Which Roms? and i suggest installing SmelkusMod Recovery, its easy, just download the bootloader version (verify the MD5), and rename the file to PC36IMG.zip, put on sd card and reboot into bootloader, and it asks to install new PC36IMG and hit yes and it installs. easy. after that, the way you install new roms is easy too. Boot to new Recovery, wipe cache & dalvik , boot, cache, data, system (i like using the combo wipe called 'SuperWipe' which does boot, cache, data and system 3 times), then flash new rom and reboot.
then as for the gps issue that i was having, it was because i'm using a JB rom.

No problem bud..... Happy wife = Happy life (edit-angryITman beat me to that)
So....
This sounds awesome, but I'm wondering: what's different about your version that makes it work?
I am having the same problem. I will say that I used a Sense 1.0 based ROM for about ten minutes today (sooo ooooold), and it worked fine then. But any "I actually want this" ROM fails with Instagram. I want to try your solution, but not before I know why it works.
It's an older version. The up to date, most recent version obviously breaks, and since it 'worked before' the best option is to 'use what you had before' so I downloaded the previous version and tested it out....... It works. That's it. Just an older version. Nothing fancy bout it.

[Q] NFC not working

just bought a i9195 and right away i've flashed vikinger kernel.
although i didn't tested it, I'm pretty sure on the official rom i had nfc enabled but I can't turn it on anymore.
tried on a bunch of roms, stock an vikinger kernel but no luck. nfc is always disabled and when i try to enable it the button moves to "I" for a couple of seconds but it goes back to "O", doesn't turn green.
the only rom i could enable nfc is cm11, so no hw problem..
knox is 0x1 but i don't think this has to do anything with it..
can you please confirm nfc is working on specific roms? (jm7, knox 0x1)
any ideas?
you are right, I am on stock rom (MH3) and vikinger kernel and nfc is also not working for me. I will look into that.
Deodexed stock MK3 + arco's kernel -> NFC works like a charm!
I also flashed arcos kernel, still no nfc strange...
Same problem. Also on my s4mini NFC doesn't turn on. When bought it was OK. I'm on stock ROM with arco's kernel (but i tried also with kernel stock and it's the same). Last proof at this point is reflash firmware with odin
edit. still no NFC also after flash kernel with odin
Don't know what happend, but I just flashed stock rom mh3 with Odin. NFC still not working, don't know what else to do, because going back to stock is the hardest reset I can do, or not?
s.goten said:
same thing happened to my s4 mini
i don't think that responsible is the modem because when I discovered the NFC issue I had the old modem (the one installed when bought s4mini), anyway, now I have installed the new modem MK3 and NFC still doesn't work.
if NFC breaking depends on cwm, cyano, kernel mods, ecc... I thing that flashing stock kernel with odin everything would have to return to work but it not happens. maybe, because the chip is in the battery could be a battery problem (even if an user with same nfc problem says that under cm11 NFC works, so it isn't a hardware problem). anyway sorry for OT.

Just flashed cm11 and nfc is working, so it's not a hardware issue. But still don't get it, why it's not working on stock rom....

it's good to know that it's not a hardware issue. maybe a samsung firmware update (i hope with android 4.3 ) could fix the problem....
yeah I hope so, too.

Same NFC problem here. Only working with cm11.
same problem
I'm having the same problem, everything was working properly with the stock 4.2.2 version, now only works with Cyanogen.
If I do the whole procedure with Odin and install the stock version, in addition to NFC, wireless does not work in some cases also, I've tried with various stock firmware and the problem remains the same.
I wish I had the original version back more'm being forced to use version 10.2 of the "stable" cyanogen, but this version has serious problems and always hangs when I receive or make a connection.
Now I have a smartphone that works perfectly for everything except for connections.
Phone Model: GT-I9195
Last Stock version installed: I9195XXUBML1 (German)

OK well I installed the kernel and too NFC wasn't working. Luckily I have a backup and just restored the boot and now its working again. Here's an image of the boot/kernel I restored.
Phone: S4 Mini (GT-I9195)
Rom: Stock 4.2.2
Kernel: acro
Root: Yes
SD Card: 16GB SanDisk Ultra class 10
i try this
I also have a backup that I made right after the first time I root the device. I'll try to restore it and flash the official firmware version to see what gives! thanks for the tip.

Temp NFC fix
Download this https://www.dropbox.com/s/haoazkhxx1ehoj0/nfc_nci.msm8960.so
Then watch and follow this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJLqccmfCEI&feature=youtube_gdata_player
1.Download file
2. Copy & paste the file to system and change permission to wr-r--r--
3. Move it to lib/hw
4. There then should be 2 files that are similar. One is in uppercase so delete that one (the old file)
5. Reboot
It's a very dirty temp fix until we find out why its happening.
can someone try it please?
Thx for the solution, I tried it and it works. But I had to delete the file "nci.MSM8960.so" with uppercase letters (which was about 240kb) first, before it worked with your file.
I also made a flashable .zip for cwm: http://d-h.st/nTX

[Q] format() expects 5 args, got 3

Ok, so I want to flash my note 2 to a custom rom with note 3 s pen feature. I was inattentive and installed the following rom in the following order
DN3_v3.2_by_E-Team_(Vegeta_Edition)
Hurricane_V9.2_DDUENA1_MD5_BC19455598C33E9D4D93B5514B851EEB
it was then i realized the above rom is not for the sgh-t889 model and was for some other model. but by then it was too late. i tried to install the correct rom which is from the link : youtube.com/watch?v=qopRVFsJTiI
with this rom
Sky_Note_Air G1.5
but I kept on getting this error
"format() expects 5 args, got 3"
In Philz recovery, i do these following between each attempted flash.
recovery wipe data/factory reset and then clean to install a new rom
install zip and then choose the roms to install
the first time i flash DN3, it was successful but Sim does not work and also the s pen
and then i flashed hurricane and it also works but sim and s pen also does not work
after that the DN3 always freeze in the middle of installation particularly in the terms agreement's step
hurricane always flash successfully
I research this error but I am really confused. my hypothesis why i can't flash sky note is because i wiped the system in hurricane so the args was set to 3 and that may be why DN3 always freeze and why hurricane always work but not for sky note or any other t889 compatiable rom.
please help me. I really dont want to get a new phone if i can help
Im using DN3 on my T889. There are threads in the Q&A Section already regarding this.
But since im already here..
If you wish to continues to use DN3 on your Tmobile Note 2. You will need
1. Flash TMobiles newest radio. Which is the MK7. A simple search on various Roms OPs should help you find it.
2. If you havent updated to 4.3 officially then you'll need to flash 1 of the 3..
A. Devil Kernel
B. AGNi Kernel
C. Wifi Patch
Again...doing a little research on various Tmobile 4.3 Roms will help you out.

No offense and I really appreciate your help but I have no idea what MK7 is. I am a noob at this and I really need to know what each item means especially since I don't know where to start in the first place.
I searched MK7 and all i get was support for other devices.
I used recovery on my note 2 to the official firmware which is 4.3 but I can't call (Baseband version is unknown).
I pretty much given up on getting note 3 s pen feature on my note 2 since all these is really difficult for me. So if i can just get back my ability to call and text (pretty much back to original state) would be great
I don't know what those links means. Can't you just point me to the links where i can download the items i need and give me the instruction?
I'm willing to give 20 or 40 bucks to the person (via paypal) who help me the most if that is allow.

when i tried to flash that rom, i got the same error "expect 5 arg, got 3"
only the dn3 (which freezes) ; hurricane that flashes but can't call ; recovery to official 4.3 but can't call either seems to bypass that error.
ok, so i can always revert back to official 4.3 as a last resort
the tmobile modem cleared the call problem so that's good.
now i want to be able to install hurricane (since that's the only rom that has the note 3's s pen feature that was able to flash completely) with the s pen feature working (the pen can't move the screen at all).
so any ideas why the s pen doesnt work in hurricane?
I never tried hurricane. Only DN3 and it works flawlessly for me. Once the Rom and kernel settles you'll have less freezes or random reboots.
I did have one freeze today but it was my first one in 3 weeks and I was using my phone heavy.

all the roms are good.
the philz recovery is the culprit. after i flashed twrp i am able to flash dn3.1 with everything working (except the air command with the pen but that i can live without).
anyways thanks. to anyone with similar problems, always use twrp instead of philtz
dn3.1 can be install by itself but dn3.2 can't (need kernal to use pen but modem can't make phone make calls)
Do you know how to enable air command with s pen function (I know i have to hover on phone and press button, what i meant was is there a setting i have to enable or install something)?
I would suggest not to update to the 3.2. But it's up to you.
Then reflash the MK7 Modem and/or flash Devil Kernel if you need Wifi working.
And to enable Air Command: Settings > Controls and turn on the feature..
thank you dude

Thanks for the reply. I tried to install the kitkat SD fix but it isn't compatible with my phone now I've re-installed Jellybean. No, I restored it from a backup I made before I rooted my phone. I will try that. Thanks:good:
Annoyingly I can't download the original firmware. The only place I can find is rapid gator and it fails after about an hour. Any ideas where I can get the original firmware for my phone?
How difficult can it be to get an original firmware? I just can't get it to download from rapidgator and Samsung don't seem to have direct downloads. Stuck with a knakered phone.
@davidmlondon Did u try sammobile.com ? The official firmwares are hosted on their servers and offer good speeds. But need to create a free account to access firmware downloads. Alternatively you can try samsung-updates.com If i am right they provide 2 links for all roms and u can try any. Good luck.
BTW why do u wanf to return to jb? official kitkat is good enough.

Thanks. Will give that a go. I would rather use Kitkat but every ROM I try has the same problem with the dialer crashing and making the phone reboot. Sometimes people can hear me but I can't hear them and then the phone reboots. Sometimes it just freezes, makes a screeching noise and reboots. I also notice that the signal drops to nothing, which I think is related to the dialler crashing.

did u try different modems like cnf7, cne6, cnh5 and any other. Usually network related issues are due to modems. I see that you are from UK. As far as I can remember samsung did not seed kitkat to uk. So you need to flash firmware of country close to UK like france or germany. Also before and after flashing stock kitkat wipe data/factory reset. And after flashing verify if baseband/modem changed to new one. Good luck

Also before and after flashing stock kitkat wipe data/factory reset. And after flashing verify if baseband/modem changed to new one. Good luck

Haven't tried a different modem. Might give that a go before I go back to stock. I downloaded the German version from Sam Mobile. It downloaded successfully. :good: Will try changing the modem before I reflash to stock. I'm using carbon ROM, so will research which modem to flash before I do anything. Thanks for all your help. :good:

How I Rooted my S7 on Nougat. PlayStore ROM V3 *outdated but still working*

*I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR ANY OF THIS, IM JUST TELLING HOW I DID IT. I AM ALSO NOT GUARANTEING YOU WILL HAVE THE SAME OUTCOME*
*I recommend going to this new update guide by CVertigo1 in the ROM's section as this version of the PlayStore ROM is outdated.*
Credit for Root and PlayStore Rom goes to jrkruse (https://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=1949695)
ROOTING
1)Flashed stock Nougat ROM
2)Flashed ENG-ROOT found here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767141717
- Make sure to flash the correct kernel included in the zip file
3) Install SuperSU. Link: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=529152257862710010
- I used the regular Root.bat not the one with tweaks
FIXING LAG
1)Install Flashfire from PlayStore
2)Download the PlayStore Rom from https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767144652
-Transfer the file to the S7
3)Open Flashfire and flash the zip choosing only Mount/ system read/write
4)Now AROMA Installer will pop up and go through all of the terms and conditions
-When asked what to wipe I choose to wipe everything
-Next when asked what bloat to remove I choose the PlayStore Rom which removes all bloat and replaces stock apps with google apps (To see full list of changes refer to the PlayStore thread)
5)Now when my S7 boot it showed no launcher, I simply held the home button down which opened the google search, in there I searched for the playstore app and installed Nova Launcher.
-Now reinstall SuperSU by double clicking the root.bat like before
6) Installed the following apps to help with lag; Lspeed, Greenify, Kernal Auditor, LeanDroid, Force Doze, and SSD Boost
-I used most of the settings found on Lag fix threads for the MM root
My S7 is smooth as butter after all of this, no lag spikes and random crashes like I was experiencing with just the ENG Root flashed.
EXTRA
1)I did have to to a reboot to get the camera to work properly
2) I had to download a Dialer/Contacts and Message app from the playstore because the stock ones were deleted in this process. But the store ones work just fine, I am recieving calls and messages like normal.
3) *Battery life is just a little worse than stock, might be worth waiting for Xposed to released for Nougat.*

Weird, did you wipe your S7 completely before doing the process? I would flash fresh nougat and try again.
UPDATE
Went through the entire process once more and found that wiping but keeping SU image works the best, I chose "no wipe" but it caused random reboots. I then wiped my phone and did as stated in my original post and it is working smooth once again.

Did you start on a factory fresh Nougat? It must be trying to run the setup that you first have to do when you get/wipe your phone. But you should have already done this prior IF you wiped your phone completely and started from there.
Here is another guide that you might find helpful: https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s7/development/rom-t3576124

Yes the *US*S7 does have the Qualcomm processor, and this ROM does work with it. If you are looking to see if it will work for another device with the processor then I recommend looking here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=1949695, for more information on the ROM and compatibility.

I've got it all in working order, but to address the issue.
It was just straight after using the first Odin file. (Flashed ENG-ROOT)
Although with hours of sitting here and determination, I came to a solution using this post and many others.
I now have my S7 (Verizon) rooted and functioning with no issues.
Thank you for sharing. :highfive: :good:

Glad you got it all sorted out:good:
I haven't rooted a phone in a few years but I feel like I missed a fundamental step of the root process so I have a stupid question: I get to the rom flashing step and my phone can't reboot because "Custom binary locked by SECURE BOOT (boot.img)." Then I reflash the ENG-ROOT boot.img and that same secure boot blocks because of the custom modem binary. So I just reflashed stock to get it working again, but it still gives that message if I try to install something like magisk. Am I missing something?

You cannot use any custom kernels on us snapdragon models. No magisk or anything. The only root option is engboot and root.bat plus the setups to smooth it out or no root at all
