I found a deal that would get me a Galaxy S3 or an Xperia ZL at the same price, the S3 is new, and the Xperia ZL is a used one. I've been having many problems with my Galaxy Nexus lately and am looking for a suitable replacement.
Which one is a better option?

Why not not wait for the nexus 5 or pick up a cheap nexus 4. Or flash the factory images on your galaxy nexus and see if that fixes your issues.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
They're not problems a rom can fix, the charging port doesn't work anymore, the power button doesn't work, and the screen is cracked. So..
Edit: And I don't want the Nexus 4 because of its lack of support for usb otg.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Taking newer phones out of consideration, I'll choose ZL hands-down - feels nicer in hand, has better hardware, uses onscreen nav keys (a huge perk for me), has much better support from both Sony and community (Samsung terminates their phones early, and keeps some codes secret / lock bootloader so that custom ROMs always hit obstacle). Fsck Samsung for all its phones except Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus.
But yeah, as said above, treasure your Nexus I treasure those Nexii so much that I bought a screen-cracked GNex just days ago (here in China we can replace only the screen glass instead of the glass+display, and costs merely ~$25)... Flash it to a clean state and see what magic happens. Sorry I saw what you said, good luck with a new companion. Not the Samsung Galaxy S4 "Life Companion".

Yeah, I'll be keeping this guy even when I get a new phone. I personally like the ZL better, but looking at the dev support and comparing it to the S3, it's really not great, and that's what breaks it for me. As for the S3, I like everything about it, except for the Design. -_-

...at least ZL has official CM10.2 too (and will likely stay on the official line as long as its cousin Xperia Z is alive), so shouldn't look all that bad unless you're really flashing all day. CM is always just enough for me while PA/Carbon/Slim are a pain to set up to eye-candy condition.

That's a much harder choice, but I'd still ditch Exynos 44xx (both S3 and Note 2 has this CPU) because it's very developer-unfriendly. One X+ on the other hand provides lower performance (Tegra 3 sucks), but if this device you buy doesn't have to last long, should be okay.

That's right. But truth is, developers on XDA are not the giving up type. I've a Note 2 with SlimBean (android 4.3.1) running perfectly smooth with zero bugs since I used their first builds. 6+ hours screentime, 21k in antutu without any overclocking, no glitches, all working (1080p HD filming, camera, BT, tethering, wifi, etc etc.)
Go for the Note 2. Best device I ever had and the development community is very vivid with ****loads of well maintained roms, including official cm 10.2 nightlies. There's also the samsung official touchwiz android 4.3 leak available, so seems this device isn't written off yet by Samsung, and I suppose this can only benefit the dev community even more.

I think it's safe to assume most people that have moved from a Nexus to an S3 wouldn't continue to lurk in the Nexus forums. Probably best to ask in the S3 forums :good:
I love my Nexus and will always stay Nexus for the stock Android experience and abundance of ROMs. That said though I did try a S3 4g/LTE model today and was MIGHTY impressed with how snappy it was with Jellybean.
I've been tempted several times. Its the physical buttones that are holding me back.
I recently had the chance to get it myself. But I couldn't do it. I was looking at the aosp development, and from what I'm used to it was weak. I could live with touchwiz but I just don't like it. The physical keys where also a downer. Just something I wouldn't like to give up. And since i already have a quad core tablet there really was nothing besides a better camera and even then the gnex camera is pretty good I don't listen to what others say I know what I've seen it do.

The latest Touchwiz is pretty bad. I had TW ICS on my tab2 and just recently we got TW JB on the tab2. I don't know if the SGS3 will get something similar but this latest version of TW JB on my Tab 2 is slow, the browser force closes and the interface has been changed for the worst. The ICS version of TW was better than this newest version they have released.

I have both and most of the time use my s3 for the battery life. If I want to try something new or interesting I'll usually do it on the nexus. As far as bad aosp goes I'm not sure what you're smoking, we get nightly cm10 builds consistently. I'm currently running the m2 release and it's perfectly suitable for every day use. Prior to this I was running paranoid and it was great. M2 just has better battery life. Also while they do get worse battery life than touch wiz it's still better than my nexus.

Well a lot of people I know have the s3. A lot.
Anyway...I've had a lot of opportunities to play with it. It is very very very fast first and foremost!
I've mostly played with the ICS versions. So smooth and a real joy to use. The nature UX is also very nice. Its one of the best android skin I've used from any OEM I think. They finally moved away from trying to mimic the IOS look and feel with the UI which is good.
I've tried the jellybean version of the s3 just once and to be honest I could not tell a big difference. That's because the s3 is awesome with speed and responsiveness even with ICS.
The screen is excellent also, and the feel and look of the handset in the hand is nice. It looks a lot like the galaxy nexus with buttons.
I would not move to the s3 as a full time replacement for the galaxy nexus however. Simple reason being that I had the galaxy note and waiting for ICS and Jellybean was not my thing.
I'm too comfortable with quick stock updates from my nexus s days. Plus the main reason also...the galaxy nexus is insanely fast and smooth already!

Actually, the Nexus 4 and the Optimus G have the same processor. S4 Pro. The Note II uses Samsung's own quad core processor (same as the S3 International)
Its like comparing apples to oranges. The Optimus G has no dev support, so that's a no go for me. Also heard the camera is brutal in low light. Yet the phone has some amazing specs for a decent price.
The Nexus 4 has amazing specs, and for the price nothing beats it. I can live with no expandable memory as long as I got 16GB. Hilariously, people are selling them for $500 to $600 because they are hard to get. I'll just wait till its back in stock.
And the golden Note II. I'll get one some day. But not for $650 to $800. Imagine telling my wife we can't afford the mortgage this month cause I bought a phone Lol. Almost as stupid as people paying over $800 for a iPhone 5. Ludicrous.

Correct, that's my mistake I thought the Note II featured the same S4 Pro found in the Optimus G and Nexus 4. The international Note II and apparently the US versions as well have the slightly upgraded Exynos 4212 @ 1.6ghz compared to the original 1.4ghz 4212 found in the International S3. To be fair though the S4 Pro might be a tad bit faster and more secure, not sure if you heard about the Exynos kernel exploit but the S4 Pro seems a bit of a better option at this point.

if you go on the Nexus 4 forum, you'll see a lot of complain about the battery.
And according to this test : http://mobileraptor.blogspot.ca/2012/12/google-nexus-4-battery-life-tests.html
if you only use your nexus to make call, you'll be fine. However, for everything else, the battery drains a lot faster than the GS3 :

N4 was a huge let down from Google.
Hey guys,
I am looking at getting a new phone and my requirements were:
1GB RAM
4.3+ inch screen
720p display.
The Galaxy Nexus caught my eye as it has all those things. I don't have a huge budget (£150, or €175, $225)But I am slightly concerned. Firstly because it is an old piece of kit. Now, that doesn't bother me if it performs well and gets the latest updates, but that's what I am worried about. Secondly because of Dev Support. I need a phone that will be supported for at least a year.
Please tell me what I should do. I am willing to buy a used device. If you think I should get something else, please let me know as to what device you are thinking.
Thanks!

If you want it, then buy an extended battery with it and IMHO one should also buy the charging port flex board which may stop working anytime.
Whether or not it gets official updates, it will receive the custom ROMs. But then again why would you go for a 2 year old product?
Get the n4 or the n5 when it releases
Get the s4 or wait for new nexus at end of year.

The n4 is old as well, considering the new nexus will be out in a few months, the n4 has been a blunder from day one an forgotten about due to its terrible launch an unavailability, so people just decided to boycott it an skip it altogether, lg have even said themselves it wasn't on the list of priorities to get that phone out, I don't think google would bother asking lg a second time to make another nexus with that kind of poor effort or attitude.

So here I am.
I have been watching a load of videos comparing it to Samsung flagships, HTC flagships and some weird devices made by a fruit company. The hardware has EVERYTHING I want for my upgrade. Almost double every spec to my current phone. My only concern is updates. Does this device have 4.2.2 Officially? Will there be 4.3 and 5.0 for it unofficially, if not officially? I need it to last for a year.
If you can answer my questions, I will be extremely grateful. My other option is the Xperia S, but it costs too much, bigger camera then I need and no official 4.1
Thanks Again!
Android 4.2.2 is officialy suported on the galaxy nexus and 4.3 will normally be that too but for 5.0 nobody knows.
And yeah I love the phone and it's getting old but it is still a good phone

Hello all,
I'm curious to see what you guys are doing with the fact that @arco68 is switching to the S4 Mini. I planned to switch device next January, mainly because it's my birthday then, and I got some money to spend. The first phone that came to my mind was the next Nexus: I really like the support and ROMs available for my Nexus 7. But the problem is that the Nexus 7 community is such a big mess, after 4 months I still don't recognize names like here. So that gives me two other options: buying the S4 Mini to get @arco68 great development, or take another less popular device but get the risk of getting no CM and stick with the awfull skin given by the manufacturer.
I'd really like to see you guys opinion on this

I don't know but if I have the money I'll go to s4mini. I think with arco68, there's no need to go for a high-end device. The things arco has done with the galaxy w is surely overwhelming and surely s4mini will be the same should he choose to develop for the phone.
Although a sony midrange is a possibility for me too. Sony devices most likely never hits the low activity forums/legacy and the attention from other rom makers is a good thing to consider.

So I would consider myself as a "heavy user", therefore I'm thinking of buying a high-end-smartphone, like the SGS, the Sony Xperia Z or the Galaxy Nexus =/
But theres more than a year to go until I can change my provider, so I will keep my SGW for a while and look around what the market will bring
SG Nexus? Maybe, but there maybe a new Nexus device, so I'll wait.
S4/S4 Mini? Not my priority.
Xperia Z? I'll see if I can afford that one.. I also wait for ZR version.
Xperia L? Maybe?
I'll absolutely stay away from HTC and LG. But who knows if there is a new, revolutionary version?
No, I wasn't sending this from my computer.
Time will tell, but for now the SGW still suits my needs. It´s still a phone and a tool, nothing more. Neither a life companion like for some babys here who can´t find a partner and are having no friends, nor anything I need to survive. It´s still good to call my wife who is my life companion and for surviving in the Amazone jungle I prefer a swiss pocket knife rather than a phone without connection

I agree with you sir,
for a moments I'll stick to this phone. My daily use is just phone, sms and some chat. not really do gaming. So I still satisfied with this phone. I'm not used to change phone too often, i usually change when my phone can't working well again. or i have more budget, then i will give my phone to my family.
the main reason is surely the budget, if we have more money, sure we will change phone more often.
If i got the bucks, S4 mini. Otherwise, Motorola Atrix....

Then it maybe good for me, thanks for the tip!
I'll look for the prices, if it is not too high...
If I have enough money in July, I will buy a nexus 4, but if the s4 mini start with a cheaper price, then I'll buy s4 mini

My SGW feels so outdated in comparision with my tablet...
The battery is draining like hell, and performance is awfull.
Since it will take some months till I got the money to buy a new phone, I don't think it will be the S4 Mini. That time it will be an outdated thing. And I won't let that happen thrice.

Well.. I'm Not A Fan Of The 5" Screen !
So I Was Thinking That My Next Phone Might Be Xperia ZR (4.55") ,, But Now.. I'm Really Thinking Of The Galaxy S IV Mini
Currently using Galaxy Tab 2 for gaming, and hell it runs a lot of games that Galaxy W can't or have problem with like M.U.S.E, Ku Shroud of Morrigan, Castle Master 3D, etc. Currently aiming to buy Galaxy S4, maybe at the end of this year.
I would love the SGS 4 Mini, and not just for arco's development, but mainly for me. I really like that device. But with a 350-400EUR price tag....I think I'm going to stick with the Galaxy W until the price drops down a little.

Do you guys think it's still worth the effort to get it next January? I'd really like to keep together with this great community, but I'm a bit worried to keep stuck with outdated hardware.
I've had for almost two years, finally dropped it on tile floor. Yep, the screen cracked big time. It's a VZW phone, have had zero problems with it. Unlocked, rooted, my favorite ROM. The screen still worked, so had some time to explore options. Called around, going price to replace the screen was around $140. Didn't want to get new phone via new contract as I want to keep unlimited data. Started looking at other phones on ebay. Wife has a droid razr which I like, but don't like the non-replaceable battery, plus resale cost on droid razr is more like $200. As it turns out, GN on ebay is going for just a bit over $100. Took a chance, got a GN in near perfect condition for just over $100. Score, got another GN and my old GN is sitting the drawer as a backup. I know the GN is old and a bit tired, but I really like the phone.
this happened to me, 5 months ago
i brought a bad esn GN on craigslist and replace the screen myself
save me 15% on my car insurance lol

I only bought my GNex 2 months ago for $150.. Best thing I have ever done. I like the design over the Nexus 4 and we know that the Gnex will get KitKat and then CM will support it. I mean the original Galaxy S still is being updated by CM.

...While many way more powerful phones got stuck at official CM9/CM10. Popularity and SoC structure matters a lot. But yeah since GNex is so widely popular, it will get KitKat officially or unofficially and I don't care exactly how.

My GNex is bought days ago with screen cracked (at ~$60 it's still a nice deal), but here in China we have magical repair stations that replaces only the screen glass (they can do this for most Samsung phones) and costs merely ~$25. I will opt for this solution as soon as I have enough money. Too bad I've never heard of this available out of China.

Yeah. For example the Motorola Atrix. It was the world's most powerful phone. And it is stuck on Gingerbread. But it was what innovated Dual Core phones and 1GB of RAM.
The Galaxy Nexus will get it officially.. All nexus' have got 3 code names of Android but the Galaxy Nexus only has 2.

Very good point there. Plus, even the Nexus One gets decent, bugless unofficial 4.3 ROMs now. Unofficial releases should never be a problem. Let's see when will the 1st Nexus die unofficially...

Yeah. And the HD2. It's still rocking Android 4.3 ( and Sense 5?!) and it's not even an android phone!
Yeah. I used a Nexus S with 4.3 CM 10.2 and man. It was smooth. Not Galaxy Nexus/Nexus 4 smooth. But smooth none of the less. So I doubt the GNex will die anytime soon.
Why did you buy a Galaxy Nexus when you have a Nexus 4?

BECAUSE I'M CRAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZY!!! (Think Crazy Dave)
To be honest, I bought relatively legacy devices at real cheap prices not for calling/internet, but for flashing pleasures and special perks, usually determining the devices' uses: e.g. I get outstanding performance (at the purchase time) and QWERTY with an Epic 4G, so it had served as my main gaming device back then; and I get 16:9 screen with onscreen nav keys (a big must!) with a GNex, so I can play PPSSPP without black borders.

Well really. I want to collect the whole Galaxy S line of phones. But the S is my favourite. Just really good to see that it is still supported and what not! I may ask this friend... don't want to pay to much for it... <$50 or less.. I'll see what he says... what phones have you got?

My signature lists all phones I currently own. Unlisted are either sold (G1, Milestone, etc.), exchanged (N9, Xiaomi MI-1S) or too obsolete (N900).
Galaxy S is also one of my favourites, I just don't think it's worthy of paying ~$80 for it today (the price here in China), especially when I can have a far superior and valuable GNex at an even lower price!

Actually, I did. I decided for a couple of reasons not to use. One, there is the $100 deductible. Two, when I found them on ebay for roughly the same price, thought I take a chance and be able to keep the broken phone (which still works). Now I have a backup that I can also try out different ROM's before committing to my DD. I have since cancelled the insurance..
You could purchase a BAD ESN phone off eBay for less than $100 and switch out the parts. Its looks pretty hard to replace the actual glass, but the device looks relatively easy to take apart. Like a micro computer.

I looked at that option as well, watched a couple of youtube videos of it being done. Was not for me, I'm not that good at working with small parts. With my luck, I'd end up breaking the screen trying to replace it.
