[Q] External Speaker Stopped Working - Sprint Galaxy S3 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

My external speaker stopped working, and I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software issue. The phone doesn't ring, and if I try and play anything through the external speakers no sound comes out. My headphone jack is working, and I'm able to make/hear calls.
I'm running CM 10.1.3, and I've been running this rom without any problems for a while. In trying to fix/troubleshot this issue I ran across the Galaxy S3 hardware test via the phone/dialer *#0*#, but this doesn't work in CM. Is there any way to check hardware in CM? Or does anyone know how to fix this if it is indeed a software problem?
I've checked all my volume settings and tried the following:
Rebooting
Re-installing CM, multiple versions
Pulling the Battery

Sounds like some kind of hardware failure. Flash back to stock after you do a nandroid to make sure.

It seemed like a hardware issue to me too, then I did a factory reset and flashed a stock 4.3 ROM and the sound magically started working again!

Did you have the "Silent" profile on when on Cyanogenmod?

Sound issue

Hi there,
there's one strange issue with my Galaxy Nexus and I don't know what exactly causes that: if I start a phone call I sometimes can't hear anything. The only thing that helps, is to plugin the headset and unplug it right after that or to activate and deactivate the speaker.
I'm using the Android Revolution HD ROM, but I don't think it's ROM related.
In my opinion it's a software bug of ICS in general, but I'm not sure.
Someone with the same issue?
Thanks!
Nobody?
Never heard of this issue.
Maybe you could wipe and try another ROM to see if the problem still persists.
Do a backup of course.
Yep. Wipe and reflash.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
OK, I'll try. But maybe it's a hardware failure:
Activating and deactivating the speaker does not always help. Sometimes I have to do this several times. Then, in the first moment, the voice is distorted and after some additional seconds everything is fine.
Hw issues happen occasionally after flashing. It's happened several times to me on other phones. Wiping and reflashing is how to eliminate if it's hardware or software. Go ahead and wipe and flash. The. ROM you're on. If the problem still persists, wipe, flash stock image and completely stock kernel and wipe some more. Then report back.
My grandma beat me down and took my nexus. Sent from a jitterbug with beats by dre.
Good to know, doing a backup at the moment and then I'll reflash my current ROM. Thanks! I'll report, if it helped...
2 days later and still no problem...
Now I'll install advanced power menu / setting profiles. Thought they could have caused the problem, so I did not install them after re-flash. Don't think they did, we'll see.
The last thing, I'll test after that is the fixed Mail.apk from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20686877&postcount=2814
Maybe I did something wrong (compiling the app / installing it)
ok, I found out, what has caused the sound issue: it was the advanced power menu.
but why? flashed definitely the right version and the menu was working properly, except the mentioned problem above...

[Q] Low mic volume

People have been complaining about not being able to hear me during calls. I had someone call my home phone from my cell and the voice sounds extremely muffled and quiet; however, regular voice recorder through a separate apps works fine.
I'm running the latest radio (UVMC6). This problem started while using the ParanoidAndroid ROM. I have since switched to HellyBean but that has not fixed the problem. Toggling noise supression doesn't seem to fix the issue either...any ideas?
only thing i can recommend is try a clean install format system in mounts and storage, and wipe data factory reset, wipe cache/dalvik ,and try to flash the ROM again to see if the problem is still there you pretty much have tried everything which is good. do you remember any ROM where this issue was not occurring ???

I was using SlimStar before PA and the first few build of PA seemed fine as well. Started happening about a month ago. I did a clean install going from PA to Helly. I'll try it again and see if it works.
Also the new PA roms have been using custom kernels , PAC is really picky the way it boots up and if you don't have the MC6 radio and a certain kernel sometimes wont boot i know this has nothing to do with your issue but just thought I'd let you know. and is just muffled or literally really low volume ??have you tried with headphones to see if this problem is there ??
Seems to happen randomly to some on 4.2.2 roms.
Only thing I can suggest is TW 4.1.2 roms.

Still no dice... Currently running Shadow 1.4 ROM and call recipients still complain about my voice being too quiet/dropping in and out.
Could it be a hardware issue perhaps?

Yup. Bad microphone? Get any water in it? Or a carrier issue...bad signal? I assume you have newest radio...or it wouldn't work at all.
Did you try a couple 4.1.2 roms to be sure. Maybe even try stock....or ics even. Just to be sure.
Did you go into phone settings and check enable noise surpression.

Notification/ volumes sounds changes to very low by its self.

OK this problem has been bugging me. Its started a few weeks back and i thought when i updated to 4.3 it would go away. But no luck.
Here is the problem. I have a Samsung S3 SGH I747M on Rogers was on 4.1.2 stock rom rooted. Now im on 4.3 stock rom rooted.
My phone keeps changing the notification/ all volumes on it own to very low. I can hardly hear it. I reboot my phone and its back to normal and all volumes are were i set them. Now i did notice that when it does go very low all my volume sliders go to the max position but everything will be very low.
Its driving me crazy. I have uninstalled several apps that i thought might be causing the problem but nothing seems to fix it. My next step is to do a factory reset. Which i really don't want to do as i have my phone set up the way i like it.
I'm hoping some of you phone gurus out there can help me find this annoyance.
Thanks.
Wow. No reply's. I guess nobody has had this problem before. Ill keep looking.
My volume dips occasionally, but I'm on pacman Rom with viper4android installed. In my case it happens when viper decides to randomly crash.

Did you have any audio mods installed ? If so then that might have caused the problem because to fully uninstall those you have to remove some of their system files or if they changed your build.prop you might have to undo the changes.
Other than that im not really sure what might be causing it.

I have the same issue. I uninstalled Ram Booster and disabled Power Savings Mode. Problem still exists but volume change is much less. Also ,it happens exactly when screen turns off. Factory reset did not solve it for me.

I just started experiencing this issue as well. Never noticed it before as I always had my phone on silent for school but now that im on vacation I turned the sound back on and I can't hear the locking and unlocking sounds unless the phone is right next to my ear. The keyboard and the basic touch sounds are very quiet too. Wondering if you managed to fix this problem ?

Hey Florad77,
Yes i did manage to fix it. Tasker is the culprit. Its not playing nice with the 4.3 update. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and everything was working fine. No volume changes. Then i set up some tasks, simple ones like turn off my Bluetooth when i leave my truck etc. And low and behold the sound issues came back. It must be when tasker trys to run tasks that it F,s everything up in the phones settings for sound. I just uninstalled it again and i also removed secure settings as well. Here is a review of Tasker from google play with the same sound problems.
Bob Porvan November 30, 2013
Sound notifications don't work... After the recent update, notifications stopped playing sound files, unlike always. A power related task keeps firing when it's not supposed to. 4.3.yuga.pac

I hope this fixes your problem. Mine is work just fine now after the uninstall.
Volume issues fixed.
OK. I was still having the problem even after deleting most of the apps i thought were causing the problem. But had no luck fixing the volume issue. I remembered my son saying he has had a problem with his phone not connecting to the Bluetooth also but his had a different error. So i asked him what his issue was and he said every time he tries to connect he gets an error saying "unable to play during call" So i googled his problem and found the answer and it fixed his Bluetooth error. I then checked my own settings and changed it also and if fixed mine.
So If you use text plus go to settings and unselect enable incoming calls, and that will fix the unable to play during call error when using your music player over Bluetooth. And like me if your also having volume issues after connecting to Bluetooth it will fix that also. Make sure to reboot your phone after the change.
I hope this helps somebody as this problem has been driving me crazy for months now. I was so close to doing a factory reset and re flashing the rooted 4.3 rom again.

The problem with the volume that you are facing is because of a secret call in the background via Hangouts.
Basically Hangouts connects a call with someone in the background without user's interaction and phone goes into call mode.
And in call mode volumes are adjusted appropiately as it should be in a normal call and all the sounds come out of earpiece.
If you turn off Hangouts, you will not get this problem again.
Hit Thanks!, if it helps

[Q] Android 4.4 Roms on Galaxy Note II Causing Headphone Audio Problems

Android 4.4 Roms on my Galaxy Note II have been causing headphone audio problems. Otherwise audio works fine, as with any other non 4.4 rom. Has this been happening to anyone else, and if so, does anyone have a solution? =/ Been looking forward to 4.4 for monthes, this is just so disappointing.

What type of problems are you having. There's a general low audio volume on the 4.4 roms but other than that there's no issues with audio for me. I'm running omnirom 4.4.2
Explanation
It's strange. Once I have it installed, I have sound without headphones. However if i plug in the headphones, I do not get any sound. It sort of goes out after a certain point and doesn't come back unless I take out headphones again and play sound THEN plug in headphones.
Just tried viper4android and it keeps asking me to verify if its rooted -.-.
I get random sounds like the pop sound when I hit a group folder, but only get sound otherwise on apps if i take headphone out, press play or whatever, then plug headphone in

I had the same problem for the longest time. If you move from anything pre 4.4 to 4.4 you get that effect. I have solved the problem by doing a full factory reset, cache wipe, dalvik wipe, and the secret is wiping internal storage as well but I also wipe system but I'm fairly certain it has to do with internal storage but I wipe all of those to be sure and it fixes the problem. Hope this helps! I use twrp so I can't confirm it works with cwm or philz

I'm not sure what the problem is. I was on a ROM, updated to the next version of that ROM and the problem came back. I wiped everything but systen and reflashed and problem came back then wiped everything including system and reflashed and problem solved so it has to do with system. Side note wiping system on my cwm will wipe EVERYTHING including your external sd and all the data on your phone. I learned the hard way but I think I was on an older version of cwm. I have used twrp ever since. Let me know how it works out for ya
I thought id take your advice and try twrm but when I tried to install through goomanager I still end up booting into cwm. Any idea why that might be hapoening ?

Urgent and Serious issue with audio! HELP needed. please!

Guys, I have this one major issue with audio in my phone and its the rarest of the problems! The whole audio output stops completely. By completely, i mean even the receiver sound. completely dumb! cant hear anything if someone calls me. This has been occurring since a month or so. I am running on Cyanogenmod 11 M8. Even if i restart the phone its stays the same way. And all of sudden, randomly, the audio back again, working properly. when it goes dumb it stays like that for 5 6 hours. it happens quite often. this is throwing me off totally.
Device : Galaxy S3 SGH i747 - At&t
This problem happens:
1) when i am on call, suddenly it goes mute.
2) when the phone is kept idle for more than 3 4 hrs. So every morning its dumb when i wake up.
These are what I've tried and what I've found out:
1) I reverted back to stock 4.3 to check if its the problem with audio hardware. But in stock it worked perfectly and flawlessly. no issues there. SO its definitely got to do with cyanogenmod.
2) I flashed ktoonsez kernel on CM 11 M8, to check if its kernel problem. But its happening again. SO its not the problem with kernel.
3) I recently found out that if I wipe the cache from recovery, audio is back working. SO its definitely something in the cache thats messing with the audio. Some app may be.
this thread can be referred for more details on this issue:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/81373-audio-stops-working-from-time-to-time/
and I dont know what else to do now. Ive tried uninstalling all the apps that access audio. But the problem still persists.
I really really need help fixing this one. PLEASE HELP.

I've had that issue a month or two ago but haven't seen it on the latest ROMs. I'm not sure what causes it but I would suggest you flash another ROM if CM messes up with your sound (or another version of CM).

Hey it got fixed in the latest nightly ( cm-11-20140721-NIGHTLY ). I had put it in cyanogenmod forum, I guess they read the issue and fixed it. Audio is perfectly fine now! Feels so great to use cyanogenmod again.
Thank you cyanogenmod!
I have this issue too but it doesn't have to do with the audio disappearing; it's simply gone from the get-go after clean flashing a ROM.
As you've said, stock FW and ROM works fine, but anything custom will just totally break it. Seems to be a very isolated issue with the phone itself, I've searched all over for people with the same problem but could never find anything.

Oh. It used to happen to me once or twice. No audio when I install CM, after it boots the first time. I think you should check the new nightly of 7/23. Looks like its fixed. They've fixed a number of audio issues over the last few nightlies. And I've always preferred CM over any other roms, so I've no idea about why it isn't working on other roms.

Thanks for the suggestion, I may as well give it a try since most everything else I've tried has had the same issue.
edit:
Clean flashed latest CM nightly, sound worked for around 2 minutes, then stopped when I plugged headphones in. Rebooted, got it to work via speakers again but then DSP manager force closed and left me without sound.
Rebooted into recovery, cleared cache, still no dice.
Going to try another clean flash to see if I can get sound to last a while longer.
edit 2: It seems to be screwed completely now, no sound after install + reboot.
