Wireless qi charging - works for GNex - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Well I'm sure you could, depends on how thick it is. Perhaps a stock extended cover. I don't know about the extended battery though. It's pushing stock cases as it is.
I'm not 100% sold on the USB port and flex cable. I guess if you use a TPU case, this would mostly be concealed but I've seen these where they actually attach between the battery and battery contact inside the phone (double sided flex cable with copper connections on both side). That would be ideal and I'm sure it would work.

It just bends to go in between the battery and phone contacts. These are also meant to go under the battery cover. Our batteries use 4 prongs, not sure if this one listed is compatible. I would buy one in a heartbeat if someone posted a link to one that works.
My N7 is Qi capable and I have a Qi Charger, but it goes largely unused. I'd use this in my bed room though for night charging. I'd like to keep the USB port open still for charging normally in my car or when traveling like normal.

However with a little engineering, it should be just as easy. The battery has 4 contacts. The battery is labeled with (+) and (-) pins. One could probably grab one of these for the Galaxy S3, turn it sideways so the contacts are close to the battery pins, and use some kind of copper foil to wrap around the battery tabs and to the Coil leads.
I use an extended battery, which leaves me with little room. I have been wanting to experiment with cutting one of my backplates in half to just cover the top portion around the camera, giving me some additional room for stuff like this. Probably wouldn't work unless I used one of my stock standard batteries. Losing a few mAh for Qi might be a good trade off though.
The mod would actually adhere to the battery itself, thus no physical modifications are done to the phone. So I could always pick one of these up, hack a battery, and test it.

I have broken my Gnex's micro USB port recently and I am going to change the whole part:
A broken usb port, believe me is very annoying and I am thinking of adding qi charging capability to my Gnex to reduce the workload my my new port.
I don't know if there will be a risk of overcharging if a qi coil is attached directly to the battery, as a qi receiver coil converts oscillating magnetic field to 5V only.
How about adding a LiPo charging circuit that will cut off when the battery is full:
This exact board measured 10mm(w) X 12mm(l) X 2mm (h), a minor back cover mod is need to install that.

I actually did this to my GNEX. Although not how I pictured before.
I actually took a soldering iron and melted the plastic under the battery door where the pogo pins come in. From there I soldered 2 balls of solder over the outer pin contacts. From there I just laid the Qi pad on it to make contact and taped in place.
I used a slim case, so it required I cut one of my battery doors in half and used a standard battery. Extended battery would kinda work but the case would buldge at the bottom making a poor fit.
In the end, I glued the Qi pad to my feather case with poxy. With the case on, it kept the contacts connected. All that was visible was a small hole under the battery door. Worked great. Don't even have to take it apart.

Um, it's not bad. I charged at night. I used a 750mAh Qi Pad, so it was faster then a slow charge but not quite as fast as a quick charge.
It was super easy. I had pictures up on Swappa when I sold it. If I can find the listing I'll post the link. It was probably the only GNex with Qi.

There's my post with pics of the Qi mod. Took a soldering iron and melted some plastic under the battery door, exposing the 3 pins. 2 solder balls on the outer pins. I squeezed a small piece of toothpick over the middle pin to provide separation. Then just laid down the pad and taped it. Took 5 min.
I squeezed all mine down to fit into feather case. You'll see the pics in the post. Pretty easy to follow.

For those without aa thicker cover, this is still possible because the LED circuit is the same size as the speaker port (though it will muffle with a normal back) or you can put it in the back area of the headphone port.
My reason for this is I am a girl, so I put my phone in my purse when moving about. DO YOU KNOW HOW IMPOSSIBLE IT IS TO FIND YOUR PHONE IN A DARK PURSE? This solves that without being too bright. Also, do not worry as it uses almost no battery and will continue to shine, even if the phone does not have enough voltage to run as this needs only 2.0v to have full illumination! Also, doe not violate the warranty as you do not have to crack open the phone to install, just wrap the wire around the spring loaded battery connections! To connect, just use the FAR RIGHT AND FAR LEFT of the 4 pins, otherwise your phone will get very angry with you and will not charge. Tape is used to diffuse the light.
The red is the base plastic of the phone (used to be covered with black rubberized paint). This has been initially removed by using the back of a razor blade and then finished with plastic polish using a dremel.
Finally finished off with a $7 shipped eBay extended battery with cover.

Use your handy dandy DMM to check polarity & voltages?
On the battery or the LED?
Basically, the battery will keep the phone on from a peak of 4.2V and low of about 3.3-3.4 depending on what your setup is. Now, where the led is hooked up is after the battery charging circuit that brings down the voltage to 4.0-4.2V from 5V (again depending on if you have 002 hardware or later versions). That means that this battery will essentially show the same brightness from 3-4Volts and my choice of resistor for this was 103ohm as it was not too bright, but bright enough. The light will show down to 2V with decent brightness, at the limits of the discharge circuitry in your battery (stock cuts itself, the chinese ones do not and do allow overcharging).
You do not need a DMM or Scope for this (even though I love my DSO Nano V2, always in my purse for when I need it!)

You said you are getting 2 hours above stock... how many hours are we talking because usage varies from user to user. Just curious.

I likey! I have some extra SMD's laying around from when I changed the lights on the dash of my car to all be one color. I have to take my phone apart anyway to change my cracked digitizer and replace the exterior housing, so I may just do this in the process.

Hyperion Extended Battery

Ordered this a few days ago and it came in the mail today, it says for the i9300 (international) but I took the chance and it works great for my AT&T version.

It's a Hyperion 4000mAh extended battery. Its about the double the thickness of the stock battery and has a new back cover to come with it. On the card included with it, it suggested a 12 hour initial charge and then 4-5 cycles to reach full potential. I will be following up on the thread periodically over the next few days with some screenshots and other thoughts on how the battery is working out for me.
However, initial impressions are good. The back cover is good quality, however very slick compared to the stock one. The thickness with the added battery isn't terrible, and will definitely be worth it if it doubles the battery life like it should.
On the amazon site it looks enormously thick, like a half of an inch or so, can you measure it for exact thickness please?

5/8" thick total. Like I said, it makes it quite a bit thicker but double the juice... You gotta put it somewhere lol. At least it looks a lot better than the Note extended batteries did, those looked atrocious. There was just a bump where the battery was but behind the camera was stock thickness and it looked horrid.
Does the battery have the NFC antenna?
No nfc and bulky on a rather sleek n sexy phone...no go here. Plus the battery life on this thing is SICKKK, why the need for the extended batt? I could reason with an extra battery.
Well to add to my review, the back panel breaks VERY easy. My phone took a 2 ft tumble off my bed and it took a chunk out of the battery panel that came with the extended battery.
I was thinking of either getting an extra battery it just buy one of those battery packs that recharges the phone. Friend has one of the Energizer packs for his iPhone and it appears to work really good, that he bought an extra one.

Unfortunately, $6 shipping.
Looks nice though with an equivalent storage of approximately 2000mAh with 4 NiMH's in it @ 5v or 10Wh (minus whatever conversion losses, probably about 10% so 9Wh). Original battery is about 7.8Wh capacity.
if you want a good external battery pack goto amazon. serach for vaas battery. get the $28.99 shipped one with the 2.1 amp output
sadly its mini usb not micro to charge but at least its STANDARD and not proprietary. it charges up my S3 just fine should be able to get 2 full charges out of it or run the phone for DAYS if you use it while the phone it already fully charged.
it is by far the best battery pack I have purchased yet I would not by anything else.
they have a cheaper one. SAME battery but less amps on the output. if you buy 2 to avoid shipping its under $16 a pop ($15.70 each) but I am not sure if it has enough power to charge. I know the 1amp outlet on my unit does NOT properly charge my S2/S3 (trickle charge) I have to use the 2.1 amp outlet.
Stock charger for the S3 is 700mA so a 1A charger should be more than enough. Some dual port chargers list 1A but limit each port to 500mA. I sometimes wonder if using higher capacity chargers (I've been using some HP Touchpad 2A chargers) might have thermal issues shortening battery life. But, I like the quick charge.

there is "port" differences. I have a VAAS battery pack I use (6 of them I power a lot of stuff) and the 2.1 amp port charges the S3 fine but the 1A port is "slow" (trickle??)
Anyone having problems with this? Fit, finish and signal?
I just got the Hyperion Extended battery with the dark colored back. I also got their case to fit it.
All was well when I put the new battery in and covered it up with the new back cover. I then installed the case and left it to charge. That took about 3 hours to go from 58 to 100.
When I picked up the phone, I noted that there was no telephone signal (at home it was on wifi). I checked the settings (not in airplane mode) and then turned it on and off again and it was still no telephone signal. So, I took the case off, put the old battery back in and all was OK. I switched back and the signal is now good.
I noticed that the back cover was dirty. I thought I had gotten some kind of smudge on it so I wiped it off. The smudge just got bigger. The cheap coating of paint was coming off.
Earlier, I had noted that the charger plug didn't feel quite right. When I looked closer, I saw that the small top part of the opening for the plug didn't quite fit. We're talking a millimeter or so, but it doesn't quite fit. It is so thin that I cannot consider cutting it.
My first inclination is thinking that Hyperion is junk. Since I have been considering getting a new, bigger battery almost since I got the phone a couple of months ago, I don't want to give up.
So, what are your experiences with this company's products? If I send any part back, I have to send it all back. The battery came with the big cover so if I send back the cover, the battery goes with it. If I send those back, I don't need the case.
Where do I go from here?
I just bought the Hyperion as well. So far, so good. I did get the Hyperion case as well. The power and cooling buttons are really hard to push. Can anyone suggest another case that will fit the Hyperion?

No issues with mine so far. No signal issues like other member mentioned. The back cover fits very well. Charger plugs up with no problems.

Just looking to get an opinion if something is due-able or not. The only thing i miss on my nexus 4 to my Htc one is wireless charging (qi charging) So i have been thinking of making a qi charging case for the htc one. This shouldnt be too hard... buy a mico usb male plug

You may encounter trouble because of the One's all-metal body. Your case will need to completely isolate the coil from the body for this to work, if memory serves me right. Admittedly, it is aluminum, so I'm not altogether certain it will be an issue.

I would really like to see something like this. A couple of challenges I think would be keeping the plug area on the bottom to as thin as possible and second would be to keep the case as thin and small as possible.

Post pics of it on the phone and let us know what kind of charger your using. It looks like you could rip off that coil and place it in any case if it's thin .
Definitely report on results. I tried to make something like this for my One XL, and while it worked as far as charging went, it was unpredictable and seemed to make the phone unstable, though I could never figure out why. I suspect it's not just the charging current but that the phone's charging circuits and drivers need to be tuned for wireless.

Thanks for letting us know about this. I'd not seen that, but it looks like just what I'd like to try and fit between my phone and case. The lack of wireless charging was the biggest reason I held off switching from my DNA to the One. I love the convenience of just plopping my phone on the orb charger during the day. The "type b" info is a big help. Much appreciated!

I saw them but they were more expensive than the one I picked up from ebay and still come from China
they are supposedly 750mA so should be a bit quicker to charge than the 500mA one I picked up

this may not sound like the most logical idea, but isn't it possible to somehow use NFC for wireless charging, since NFC is about near field communication after all?

Nfc doesn't connect to the battery of the phone and the coil is not inductive as it is a derivative of close range rfid
A quick tip for the add on qi pads with the HTC one, as the USB is not in the middle you can't position the pad straight up or the curved back makes it hard to get a connection. Put it on a bit of a diagonal so the pad is in the centre of the back

Beginning the journey of Wireless Charging

So I'm really missing wireless charging after having stuffed it into my GS3 and the Nexus 4 obviously having it built in. So... being that I still had 2 chargers and 2 pads left over, I've decided to begin modding the Moto X after seeing there was quite a bit of room in the bottom of the phone under the battery cover when I was replacing the woven black with a MotoMaker back. Here's the pre-fitting photos. I had to trim some of the foam away at the bottom, and still need to trace where exactly to place the wires for the charging. I'm guessing I'll have to solder directly to the back of the USB port. Where it sits will be a perfect angle, and should not interfere with NFC at all (Yay google wallet!)

Wow, god speed. I don't yet have a Moto X (still holding out for a wood back) but I'm so used to using those Palm wireless chargers on my current phone (SGS)! I have one at work and one at home on my nightstand. It's a perfect angle of inclination for my preference and the wireless charging works great. Are you having any problems putting the phone back together? I know they don't leave much room in there for something as thick as one of these chargers. And I guess if I eventually get the wood back that probably wouldn't make for an easy time getting it off :-/

The one he is using in the images uses the Palm Touchstone charger, you can find a bunch of applicable coils on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/palm-wireless-charging I am fairly certain that this coil will only work on that Touchstone and is not compatible with QI or Powermat.
edit: I also highly recommend buying some tiny magnets (I bought 1/4" by 1/32" circular ones) instead of the metal disks that are included so you can get it to snap a lot better to the stand.

One of them is a small pad that should fit under most soft cases, it has a thin ribbon cable with a very low profile micro usb connector on the end. The better option is something like that but integrated internally. I haven't opened a Moto X yet to see how much space there is. What is the maximum thickness we can hope to have, is there anywhere near 1mm if we remove the silicone pad?
Everything I am looking at is Qi compatible.
I have also been studying high-res pictures of the inside of the Moto X looking for possible solder points for power, doesn't look too friendly at this point.

There is plenty of room towards the bottom and the silicone is maybe a mm in the thickest area. Insofar as blocking the antenna, I've never had issues with my sgs3 or note 2 with putting the coil over the antenna. However, with regards to solder points, you are right. This is not going to be easy without fully disassembling and finding either the microUSB solder points or the charging circuits entry points from the microUSB. I may be abandoning this if that's the case.

That looks like it would be perfect to slip between the phone and a case, would bending it to conform to the back of the phone affect it's charging ability though? Or would it even be able to be bent?

So how would one check to see which of the 4 prongs connected to the ribbon going to the battery are the correct +/- terminals. I've been studying over the iFixIt.com images to come up with a plan and I think if I can get a random wireless charging coil from eBay then cut that ribbon to fit into the 2 needed ports for the battery ribbon, then the only thing would be size/fitment under the back cover.

It shouldn't matter. As long as the plug is in, and the pad is near the wireless charger.
This is kinda smart; can't believe this isn't widely known. I've never seen something like this.

REVIEW Galaxy Note 4 Qi Wireless Solution (pad, stand, car mount) w/lots of pics!!!

This is a Review of Galaxy Note 4 Qi Wireless Solution.
I was never a fan of wireless charging especially if it requires adding parts to a smartphone. It’s different with my Nexus 7 HD where Qi receiver is built in: just place it on a charging pad and off you go. Adding Qi receiver coil/pad and making sure it still works with my preferred case, not to mention without making case bulge out, seemed to me like a hassle. Back in the days when I had my Note 2, it wasn’t even an option since my provider (Verizon) disabled access to wireless charging contacts. With my Note 4 I was on a fence and the only driving force behind it was my use of the phone as GPS everyday to/from work where I have 1hr of driving each way and need to have my phone plugged in. Constant plugging and unplugging of micro-usb cable takes a toll on that port. So here I was, looking for a wireless solution for my Note 4 and accepting the fact that I will only be able to charge my phone at a maximum 1A (current limitation of a common inductive coil charging), which is half the speed of a typical 2A wired charger and even less in comparison to rapid charging.
I start looking into 3 common pieces of this solution: a wireless charging receiver pad to add under the battery cover of my Note 4, a wireless charging transmitter pad/stand, and a car mount with a wireless charging transmitter. Starting with a receiver coil/pad, you will find dozens of parts under $10, but unfortunately they don’t work the same. They all have an inductive receiver coil, some converter circuit, and two sets of contacts. They all will add thickness to your phone, making your battery door bulge out a bit, but not significantly. The problem, they all introduce a heat to the back of your phone (you have a high current going through a metal coil), but some make it very hot and others more tolerable. The one I found to be work the best for me is this Qi receiver pad: http://www.dx.com/p/newest-hot-sale...amsung-note-4-n9100-black-358059#.VM1OF7B0z3g - $7.99, 1A output, and about 62mm x 40mm in size. It was very easy to install, and had a little sticky strip on the back so it holds the pad in place once you align it with pins. Plus, it didn’t add too much bulge to my UAG case.

The most important thing – it actually WORKED with a transmitter/charging pad through my UAG case. Keep in mind, there is no physical contact between transmitter coil and receiver coil, that’s why it’s called inductive charging. The distance between coils will affect your charging speed, but I actually found this particular charging pad to work really well with my charging stand and car mount.
Speaking of charging stand, there are tons you can find on the net in round puck shape or a more traditional flat rectangular shape. The problem is that you need to align your phone with a charging coil inside of that charging pad and make sure you don’t move or shift it for duration of charging. That is a big challenge which has been resolved by infamous Tylt brand angled charging stand. But just like anything in this world, when you have an expensive brand name product, sooner or later you will find a similar looking (read: identical) alternative at half the price from China! It works like a charm!!! No need to slide around for the correct position or to worry that someone will walk by and knock it off the stand. That stand is upright so it’s easy to position the phone, and 3-coil design covers a larger area so you don’t have to micro-adjust the position to find a sweet spot. Plus, phone is in upright position so it’s easy to view the screen if you have to. Also, there is led indicator when power is connected to the stand (red light) and when you make a charging contact (blue light). This way you know for sure phone is aligned and charging wirelessly. The most important, it works well with a charging pad on the back of my phone, it doesn’t get too hot, and you get close to 1A charging speed. Don’t forget, it also comes with a quality usb cable and 2A wall charger. I think for $37 plus change it’s the best solution you can get to have everything you need to setup your Note 4 with wireless charging. Plus, the same stand can be used for any of your other devices supporting Qi charging.
But why limit yourself to only in-home wireless charging? In my case, I was also interested for in-car charging as well. That is also challenging because you are not only looking for a wireless charging solution, but also for a sturdy grip for your phone so it won’t slip out while you are driving. I have reviewed a lot of regular car mounts, probably everything under the sun, and always find myself coming back to Arkon mounts. But when it comes to wireless charging, I found this one to work the best with my Note 4: http://www.dx.com/p/qi-vehicle-moun...xy-s3-s4-s5-note-2-note-3-335226#.VM1OTrB0z3g ($37.19, 1A output, with a bonus of usb cable, car charger, and a vent mount). The base has a typical suction cup with a rotation lock, taking very little room.
The actual mounting part is attached to the base through a common universal 17mm ball joint which means you can use it with any of your current mounts supporting the same connection. Those familiar with iOttie car mounts will see this one uses the same push button lock mechanism where you separate the holding “jaws” by pushing on the sides, and once the phone is placed into the cradle it pushes the back button to lock it in. Just keep in mind, if you have a bulky case like a Defender – it will not fit. It worked with UAG case but had a small margin, just enough. Also, since now you are a dealing with a single coil transmit charger – you will have to find a sweet spot to position your phone. The bottom of the mount has an adjustable shelf which is very convenient to set for that sweet spot to align it perfectly. Also, there is led indicator when power is connected to the mount (red light) and when you make a charging contact (blue light). This way you know for sure phone is aligned and charging wirelessly.
Overall, this solution works 100% with my Note 4 and UAG case (not the slimmest case to begin with), and provides a reliable charging, not too much overheating though it gets a bit warm (but not “hot” like I’ve seen with some other charging pads), and it’s very reasonably priced. Keep in mind, your charging speed will be at half speed due to 1A charging limitation. Still, gets my high recommendation!!!

It should fit, not a problem, but I'm afraid the distance between coils will be too far apart thus you will be charging probably at 0.5A rate
