Sorry, if the title is a little bit fuzzy. I'm disappointed by my OUYA and want to replace it with my Nexus 7 2013. To do that I need the following features
connect to TV for Audio and Video
connect a wireless controller
charge while playing
do all that without rooting
So lets check the list:
Connect to TV: It seems I can't use Miracast for gaming, because of lags. So SlimPort is the only option here?
Connect a wireless controller: I already have an Xbox 360 and PS3 controller. The last one seems to work wireless only via root - no option for me. Xbox 360 seems to work wireless only via OTG and the PC adapter. But can I use OTG AND SlimPort on the same time?
Charging: I already need the USB port for SlimPort and OTG (if this is possible), how can I charge the Nexus on the same time. Only with Qi? Or can I use a USB hub or something like that? But does that work with SlimPort?
Thanks for help!
Slimport. It gives you Hd output and can charge your tablet. If you have issues with slimport charging you could get a wireless charger to lay the tablet on.
As for you controller most regular bluetooth controllers worth fine without root

I've seen videos of folks connecting an Xbox 360 controller via the Motorola otg cable on honeycomb. So I bought the Motorola otg cable from amazon to my wifi Xoom 4.0.4 connected my Xbox controller and nothing.
Has anyone got this to work?

Is it a wired controller? This should work, as it's a USB gamepad.
Wireless controller via dongle, or via play n charge kit, won't work.

I have the play and charge cable. What other cable can I use?

play and charge doesn't do anything AFAIK,
supposedly the windows wireless dongle will work (you might need an app on your xoom as well)
PS3 controller via charging cable (mini USB) and host cable works just fine.

Play n charge cable doesn't even work on Windows.
I haven't seen anyone get the drivers working for Xbox wireless dongle.
What works: PS3 via USB (as said above), PS3 bluetooth via Sixaxis app, Wiimote via an app (unsure which), or any cheap <$10 USB gamepad.
Wired Xbox360 controller works.
Is there a dock that charges and does hdmi out? Thinking this would be cool to play emulators or GTA on my big screen, paired with a wiimote or ps3 controller
To connect to the a TV you will need an MHL to HDMI adapter like this. I'm not sure if it charges at the same time, but it should, being that it connects via the USB port on the phone. If you search around the web, you'll definitely find much affordable deals. Cheers!

at least, if not charge, it maintains the charge level.
from your link:
The HDTV Smart Adapter supports HD signals up to 1080p. Connects directly to a standard HDMI cable for easy connectivity to home theater or monitor. Requires power from a wall charger. Can connect directly to your MHL-Enabled mobile phone to create an HDMI docking station. Requires wall charger (sold separately) to power the adapter while in use. (HDMI cable not included)”

There are some other brands, more afordable. Have any one tested any of them?

You cannot connect more than one USB cable to your phone, so unfortunately that is not possible. Which controller exactly do you need to connect to your phone?
If by any chance you are planning to use a PS3 controller, pairing it with your phone through Bluetooth and using the Six Axis Controller app is the best way to go.
Edit: In that way, you will still be able to connect the phone to your TV via the MHL cable
if you hsve a frys electronics in your town, they have this item for $24. WORKS WELL.
Hi All,
Has anyone tested the new nexus 7 (2013) with a slim port and tried USB OTG at the same time?
I am very keen to find out if i can use a Nexus 7 as a portal Media machine to play back movies from a thumb drive on Hotel TVs when i travel without the need to move the file.
I understand I'd lose ability to charge the nexus 7 using USB OTG (OTG limitation) but I can live with that.
Thanks for any results
Tony.

AFAIK the Slimport cable needs to be directly plugged into the USB port so it can switch the Nexus 4 from standard microUSB to Slimport broadcast mode on negotiating with the hardware. If you attempted to run the Slimport adaptor through a hub or Y-cable it wouldn't work.
Thanks,
I was wondering if I could plug an OTG cable into the female on something like:
(sorry if direct product links aren't allowed)

Yeah, the microUSB port on the Slimport is for power only, the data pins aren't even wired up.
Suppose I connect Nexus 7 to a monitor through SlimPort. This monitor has USB ports built in. If I connect a keyboard or mouse to this USB port, will it work with the tablet?

No - this wont work.
As stated above the data pins on the slimport are not connected so the USB can't be used for anything other than power.
ie. Tablet can't do anything else over usb when the slimport is in use.
Bluetooth keyboard + mouse could work for you though

Thanks. My intention was to use the tablet as a PC alternative for my parents. I have dropped the idea. Now I am thinking about getting one of those Android mini PCs instead (thread here).
The issue is the limited number of pins on the Micro USB port are multi-purpose.
A Micro USB port has 5 pins, one is power and another is ground, that leaves 3 for data. These 3 "flip" (for want of a better word) between USB mode and Slimport mode, So it can only do one or the other at any time.
So the lack of data pins on the slimport pass-through port (as stated above) is not the issue. They didn't bother wiring them up because they share a couple of pins in common and so wouldn't work anyway.
[Edit]
Just to clarify a slimport Micro USB connector has 5 pins. Samsung on the other hand are now using MHL 3.0 and they are pushing on with an 11 pin connectors that open up all sorts of options such as simultaneous data connections and even multiple displays! nice!

Exactly. SlimPort™ Technology White Paper has a nice explanation along with the good picture showing SlimPort architeture (see page 4)
If I get a usb Y cable or a powered usb hub, would a bluetooth dongle work? I think i can score a free ipad case with a bluetooth keyboard so i have to see how i can plop the little kindle in, but it would be nice to bring my kindle with me to school to type up research or whatever i need. I know there are threads about it but those date back in 2012 around may or so, so things could have changed
Yes. I was successfully able to get some flash drives to work, you just have to get chainfire's USB otg apps. I would imagine Bluetooth dongles would work as well

Alright thanks! Ill try it out and buy a Bluetooth dongle. I do have a wireless keyboard but it would be weird to lug around a full sized keyboard for a little tab
I've been trying to figure out how to mirror my Nexus 7's display to my standard TV. I believe I need a composite cable to do this. Is there any way I can directly output from the Nexus 7 to composite? Or do I have to go Nexus 7 > HDMI > HDMI to Composite Converter > TV? I'm just searching around for the cheapest possible solution, thanks!

Well, I'm searching for a method that does not involve HDMI. That will be most cost efficient and have less cables. I don't have an HDTV so I need a composite cable. Thanks!

Yeah i know what are you trying to do, but actually the only way to get wired audio/video signal is to use the slimport adaptor. (With wireless you would use Miracast but this isn't your case) So in your case you must use the slimport, the hdmi to composite adaptor and i think you should be good.

It would work fine with every device that support Slimport, newer devices do like LG G2, G Pad 8.3, Nexus 5 and so on. But you should check on the specifications of your devices. Before Slimport productors used to support MHL, which is almost the same but it keeps busy the USB port and on display that doesn't support MHL you should even buy an adapter which even needs external power supply.. if you can see on the Analogix Slimport adaptor you got a microUSB and the HDMI, the first is just for using it as the device one and HDMI for streaming. I was reading that Slimport has some limitations about the length of the HDMI cable, something like that it needs to be not longer than 50 centimeters otherwise you'd encounter problems..
Anyway i think that the Slimport adapter that costs just 15 bucks will be great.

Alright, looks like the SlimPort isn't going to work with the Samsung devices. Is there a cheap alternative so I can switch between Nexus 7 and the other devices? Specifically the S3 and S2 (Epic 4G Touch)
Thanks!

I think the only way is to use Wi-Fi Direct/DLNA. If you're gonna cast your screen just for viewing youtube, netflix and stuff like that, you could use the Chromecast, which does that particular job. It can't cast the entire screen but movies, audio (and other DLNA stuff) and compatible apps (you need to see on its webpage) can right now. To cast the entire screen you would need the Miracast technology but i don't know if there are any good dongles on the market that permit to do that as chromecast does. I hope you know what I mean, i'm not a native english speaker
You should take a look at the Chromecast if that can do what you need, or you can see Miracast dongles like this but i can't suggest anything
OK, I'm trying to do the same. I bought a slimport adapter and a HDMI to composite adapter. My N7 works just fine from slimport to HDMI to the TV, but doesn't work when I add the HDMI to composite adapter. However, if I hook my cable box through HDMI to the composite adapter, all works well. So its something from that slimport out of the tablet to the other adapter. What I'm trying to do is get the display mirrored in my van for the kids and the van only has composite inputs. I'm at a loss.
