[Q] Cracked Glass Over Camera... - Sprint LG Optimus G

I was looking at my phone the other day and noticed the little square glass piece over the camera is cracked. I'm not sure at all how this happened since I have not dropped the phone and it always stays in the otter box case. Has anyone had this happen before? It does not appear to affect the image quality but is there a suitable repair for this, could I use another material other than glass.

I don't know that that's even glass over the camera, pretty sure it's a thin piece of plastic

It is definitely glass for it to crack the way it did.

Well regardless. Just looked over eBay, and around a few repair sites and I couldn't find anything besides replacing the whole back cover which has the camera lens included. And that would be between 45-60 dollars

Back cover scratching/staining?

I always use a gel case on my galaxy s yet the back cover still has scratches and sort of smudges which don't go away. It's hard to explain. How do I get rid of them? Where can I get a different range of back covers?

If you're using a case and the battery cover now has scratches, I'd probably blame the case. It could be rubbing against the battery cover and scratching it.
You can purchase battery covers on eBay. Just search! They should be fairly cheap. If you find any good ones, post the links.
Same problem here.
I have to clean up silicone case and battery cover everyday to avoid scratches.

It's probably just the material of the case, as I'm sure not everyone with a case on their phone has to worry about and deal with this.
Personally, I don't use a case and have zero scratches on my phone, screen or body.

Yep. This is exactly what's happening.
It's not just scratches though. On the pattern bit in the battery theres some sort of staining. It's hard to explain what it is. l suppose it looks like dried glue

anyone use screen protector?
I am using the screen protector and I can say that it is very first thing a man should do to the phone. It is very hard to put one, as the smallest piece of dirt (between the screen and protector) is seen as big bubble ... Order the cheapest ten pack from Ebay because you will destroy couple of them before you install it perfect.. I had those on my sgs for year, and it was scratched as hell..

I don't think it's grease because it simply does not come off. And the corners of the screen always attract dust

Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Well if it doesn't come off, what the heck did you put on your phone? Maybe it's a questonably cheap case and some weird plastic/rubber/alien residue from it has stained your phone? Provide pictures maybe?
Sounds strange, especially since you can't clean it off.
It looks like dried up snot lol but it isn't. I can't be the only one who also finds that the screen attracts too much dust especially in the corners and edges

I don't notice dust at all on my device, ever (unless I'm in working in a really dusty place, which happens, but I generally don't have my phone on me when I am). This could be just a geographical difference though.
Fingerprints are another story. Those are annoying. Dust, however, I don't even notice.

The Sgs screen is gorilla glass which is scratch proof so does not need a protector.
It is possible to scratch with the right tool but the pressure needed will go straight threw any protector too.

If you look closely, you can see that those places are somewhat 'eroded',like somethings eaten away at it.
Maybe moisture build up?

To use screen protector or not???

So I'm debating on whether or not I should use a screen protector on my S3. With the new gorilla glass is it necessary?
What are all of you doing??

I think it's personal preference I bought a screen protector and I am using mine. It depends how well you take care of your phone. Get a cheap one off of amazon or eBay and see if you like it

i take care of my phones so i will not be using a protector. I never have. I took my X2 to the extremes once i activated my s3 and it was difficult to actually scratch the screen.
hoping this holds up equally well. I did by a sleeve for the phone though.
At first I didn't plan on using one, but I did end up trying a wet apply protector and I'm liking it ok. The Gorilla glass seems pretty resilient, and there are videos on youtube of people taking keys, razors, knives etc to the screen with no scratches but the last thing you want is a scratched up display.
Come on guys, there has been threads about this

I have a My Touch 4G Slide. I hate the long name.
I have been using it for over a year now and it has a few very slight scratches. It has Gorilla Glass.
Now about the videos on YouTube: They all use metal that is not so sharp. I would like to see how the glass stands up to a single grain of sand, dirt or rock fragment.
I'm a mechanic and work in a rough environment. I get dirt and grease on it all the time but I don't purposely scratch it.
My 4G was a replacement for the G2 I had for almost a year before and did use a Zagg and it got dirty within a month and the free replacements for life cost $6 to ship them.
I'll have my S3 this week and don't plan to use a protector. I don't think that a screen protector can save it from a direct hit. Since the majority of the surface is non screen, I am considering a case to spread out the impact damage if I drop it, which is more likely to break the screen.
My opinion is non scientific and is from limited experience.
The Verizon guy installed one for me and its working fine. I wasn't gonna put one on but I do like it.

I think there are many debait about this, it's up to you, and as said many times gorilla glass is not future proof it will get scratched easily, forget about keys and coins, just get some sand and try it out.
There has been some discussion on this. There are also some threads about individual screen protectors. Look here.

Same here. I don't like screen protectors. I've had this phone 7-12 months now and while my silver rim has scuffs on it, my screen is immaculate. No hairline scratches. It's absolutely mint. I have an OCD with my device screens though. There's always an LCD screen cleaner and microfiber cloth within arms reach of me. I really, really hate dirty mucked up screens lol

same here, ive had mine just about a year now. the bezel has some nicks in it.. but even a screen protector wont prevent that. I even ditched my case after about a week or so.. its much less bulky then
Yea my silver part is wearing down a little from the case I'm using. I've been debating not using a screen protector. I have one left, i just get tired of them scratching up and dulling the screen. I've had my Hercules without a protector for near a year. The screen is pristine, no scratches! I love the glass used on this phone. It can get oily but nothing a microfiber cloth can't wipe clean.
I've had the phone since February with no screen protector. Finally dropped it 2 weeks ago, went skidding face down about 3 feet across an asphalt lot. The bezel is scratched up pretty good, but the glass has no scratches at all.
I generally don't use a screen protector but with this phone I decided to. My HTC Glacier I didn't use one and after a year it had no scratches. The reason I did use one with this phone is to retain its value so I can resell and get a better phone when I get sick of it.
Sand scratches the glass so don't think its 100% safe to go without one.
I just put my last screen protector on here. I got a hair scratch down where the hardware keys are. I used to use those cut to fit ones and they would never cover those buttons. Now the one I have is fitted. I probably won't buy any more

$17.90 for front glass, not bad. I have a surface scratch on mine that has been bugging me, might be cheap enough to be worth the trouble. Has anybody had any experience ordering from that website? Is there any instructions included on how to replace the items or is that something that you just have to find on your own?

From what I read, its strongly recommend to replace the whole unit(screen, digitizer, and glass) because its a huge pain to get glass off if you are lucky enough to do so.

I know its tricky, but i've done it before(heat is my friend). Once you do it once it actually isn't bad especially because the nexus has the slight lip around the screen which helps you big time with positioning the glass. I'm just confused if the two glass cutouts are the same or not.
So I still have broken glass that is finally starting to fall out whilst the cracks have gotten larger, no thanks to my two year old who loves to throw toys.
Has anyone seen the glass replacement, not the digitizer, last long term?
I'm trying to hold out until October but concerned that I'm going to lose the screen entirely soon.

My phone has EXACTLY the same crack pattern!! And I know how bad it feels.
Is this some design issue with the GNex stress points?
I asked the Samsung Care Center and they asked around $185 for the replacement (glass and digitizer)
That is more than half of the phone cost. :crying:
(Edit: They said as the front glass, the digitizer and the lcd are glued together, it is impossible to get a seperate glass replacement)
Luckily I had a screen guard on so the glass pieces are not falling apart yet.
You can get the glass and ask a trustworthy maintenance guy for helping replace it.
I haven't tried yet. But might try soon. :fingers-crossed:

Here is what I have been using for replacing the glass on the S3.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...iveASIN=B004WIQW3U&linkCode=as2&tag=mymmne-20

Screen Protectors! Why do you use them?

s3s have gorilla glass screens I thought and they have protection to scratches but I see lots of people using these screen protectors. Why do people buying it? OR may I wrong?
Scratch resistant isn't the same as scratch proof.
I've always used protection on my touchscreen devices and don't encounter any functional differences.
All it takes...
My last daily driver had gorilla glass, as does my new S3. I'll be using a protector on my new one as soon as I can get one. I went without for the second half of my last phone's life. Granted, I had no shattering, cracking, or other screen failure, but I definitely acquired a few scratches.
After that first scratch, you'll never look at that screen the same again. All it takes is one fall or one coin or key in a pocket. I like having Gorilla Glass as an extra layer of protection, but it doesn't negate the necessity of redundancy when it comes to protection.
There's a huge thread on this. Can't remember the title tho

I honestly love my screen to be naked. I just take extremely good care of my phone. The scratches on my screen are very minimal. They are small from sand in my pocket and such. Never dropped the phone since I got it about 6 months ago.
Phone always has a dedicated pocket and I don't put anything else in there. I occasionally use a case, but not too often, though when I use my ZeroLemon 7000mah the case is of course on. Still no Screen Protector. Nothing beats the feel of glass.

What brand is it? I tried one a while ago and it made the screen not recognize half of my touches, do you have any issues like that with yours?
I had one of the glass screen protectors and loved it but I broke it. You can get them on eBay for less than $10 now and they are well worth it. I repair phones and happened to have a replacement glass for a s3 and put it on top of the my phone and everything worked except the proximity sensor. I think because of the protective film. I ordered another replacement glass ($6) and I am going to try to use it as a screen protector. Just have to figure out how to get it to stick.

I personally use a Zagg Invisishield, but plan to buy a Sir Lancelots Holy Grail soon. I use them just because I prefer not to have a scratched screen. I have seen many S3's just covered in scratches. Granted, they were owned by people who were prone to dropping their phone, but it does happen. The S3 screen is scratch resistant and tempered, but that still means it can scratch and break.
I've had a screen protector on my s3 since the first day I got it. Just a week ago, I got pretty much fed up with the screen protectors always scratching and getting really oily. Took it off and omg the screen is so smooth. So far my screen has no scratches.

Despite what they say about Gorilla Glass, its still possible to scratch it! Have some bad experience of it myself.
I've been using the same skin from xoskins.com for my s3 since the release day. No scratches, no orange peel look to it, no curling edges. Love it. Gorilla glass might be tough but scratches can happen, and this skin prevents it.
