So I've been trying to get more life out of my battery, I get decent now, but not the 18+ hours I've seen other people getting. I think the main problem here is, if I go view the Applications -> Battery Usage screen, the "Wi-Fi" and "Awake" bars are always full blue, even when the phone hasn't been touched in a couple hours.
Does anyone know what actually causes these to now sleep? Is it push email? Or some other setting I'm missing?
Thanks

Try Menu/Settings/Wireless and Network/Wi-Fi Settings. Then press Menu/Advanced/Wi-Fi- sleep policy.
Play with those settings. You are probably set to "Never". Folks have actually been reporting better battery life with this setting (powering on and shutting down the wifi eats up battery) You can play around with it to get your own results.
Hit thanks if this helps!

Ah...yes, it is set to never. So leaving it on "never" gets better results, say if you're at home and always have a wifi connection? Also, if the wi-fi is on, does that mean the device can't sleep I take it, that's what's keeping the device awake with screen off?
Thanks for the tip.

I've heard both sides to this argument, and frankly I don't think most people understand why changing it does, or in other cases does not help.
I suspect that the answer to your issue isn't going to be found here. Here's the theory:
- Setting wifi policy to "Sleep - Never" results in better battery life for some; it's likely because these individuals have a fairly low 3g signal, which tends to draw more battery when periodic updates/synchronization occurs (e.g., gmail, calendar, facebook, etc.). By leaving wifi Sleep set to never, the wifi (which THEORETICALLY uses less power than 3g) can do the work instead.
- Setting wifi policy to "Sleep - When Screen is Off" can result in better battery life for a number of reasons, many of the underlying issues being hard to identify. For example, if your router tends to send a lot of 'noise' and wake up your phone, having wi-fi disabled will prevent this. Location services in the OS - which you've probably permitted to 'help locate you faster' - even when you are NOT connected to a wifi network - will periodically ping wireless networks around you to help facilitate faster geolocation. This uses battery as well.
But don't confuse the generalities that have spawned from people's anecdotal situations with what could be a very different problem.
Was your phone primarily located in one location during most of the 'awake' period? If so, then it was probably connected to the same router most of that time. If so, it really shouldn't matter what the setting was for Advanced Wifi - the phone should still sleep.
If you turn off wi-fi on the device, and the device then sleeps, then you've narrowed the issue some, but that is not a solution, because what are you going to do, not use wifi?
You've got to dig deeper; your issue may be any of the following - rogue app that keeps a wakelock, rogue app that updates too frequently, wifi modem issue, router issue, OS issue, etc.
In short, you need to figure out what's keeping the phone awake. Get CPU Spy and Better Battery Stats to help you get insight into what's keeping the device awake.

Thank you for that very informative post. My phone was on my desk all day today( worked from home ) and wi-fi is set to always on, and it never slept, not even once.
I'll try disabling wi-fi( should have done this earlier to be honest and checked ) and then I'll download those apps, I just got Badass Battery Monitor, I'll check out the two you recommended as well. Thanks for the info!
Your phone should still go into deep sleep with wifi on. If it doesn't then you have something else wakelocking your phone. However, if wifi is set to never sleep, and wifi is enabled, the bar on the battery chart will always be solid blue.
So just installed CPU Spy, it looks like IM+ is the biggest user of wakelocks. I like to always be signed in to my accounts, but not at such a huge cost of battery, does anyone know of a better multi IM client that will push updates to you? I used to have IM+ on the iPhone( yea I know, just switched two months ago, and never looking back ) and the push on it worked great. The 'push' IM+ says it has is awful, most of the time I never get my IMs sent to me at all.
Also have skype signed on all the time, not sure if that is wakelock'ing anything, I'll have to keep an eye on it, it didn't show up on CPU Spy.
Try IMO, free from the Android Market. Its a multi-IM client that combines most common clients including Skype. I've used it. It creates some wakelocks, but not sufficient to wake the phone. I don't use IM very often so I'd be curious to hear how it works for you.

So been trying IMO the past couple days. Seems much better than IM+. Haven't seen any disconnects, I get my IMs about 30sec - 1min after the computer gets them, which is fine, and the wake-locking is extremely minimal. IM+ was awful with the wake-locking.
So that clears up the Always awake issue, flashed Blazer 3.8 last night, so can't comment on battery too much yet, also calibrating today.

Thanks for the feedback, glad to hear it helped, and I now feel a little more confident leaving my IM 'on' more often.
This is a bit weird.
I downloaded better battery stats and noticed in this that bluetooth had been on for 28 hours. this wasnt reported in the standard power useage part of the phone though. I turned it off and on and then it came up on the phone saying bluetooth 3% power usage. Bluetooth has never been on on my phone.
I then decided to do a reboot and this looks to have cleared it up. This is my third Hox and on each one i have noticed that BT sometimes turns it self on. Anyone else had this issue? wondering if this is part of the battery drain issue?

yes, i do get that too. say, i switch on my bluetooth for internet tethering and after using, i will switch off the bluetooth in my settings. however, when i went to check betterbatterystats or power (in settings), the bluetooth remained on. to get rid of it, you just need to restart your phone.
but, i believe this problem is not widespread at all.
Good to know at least someone else has it. I remember it happening on my first Hox as well.

Anyone found a solution for this?
Hello,
I’m looking for help with a rather strange problem. I’m getting a lot of awake time in Android OS. I installed BetterBatteryStats and noticed it was the service BTLowPower that was doing a lot of kernel wakelocks.
I turned bluetooth off a couple of days (and have rebooted in the meantime even) but still the top service in kernel wakelocks is BTLowPower by a very large margin ... how can this be if bluetooth is turned off ?
Stats are in BetterBatteryStats Kernel Wakelocks
Unplugged 12h47min.
BTLowPower 9h33min, 74.7%
I've attached a screenshot
I have a Galaxy Nexus which is running stock Jellybean.
Thanks in advance for any advice !

Do you guys have other Bluetooth devices around? I have a Motorola S805 headset as well as a cheapo BT2.0 dongle from DealExtreme.
I typically don't have the headset turned on unless it's connected to the computer, but what I'm finding is that if I just leave my phone with the dongle turned off and the headset turned off then I don't get the BTLowPower battery drain.
If I turn the dongle on, and turn on the headset then I typically get the BTLowPower battery drain in my GNex. I have to reboot the phone for it to go away. I'm not really sure the exact sequence of events to cause the drain to occur, but I feel like it's definitely related to turning on and off my S805 headset or being around the dongle.
There might be other bluetooth devices around (such as phones of a colleague or something), however the bluetooth on my phone is turned OFF and I still keep getting the BTLowPower in kernel wakelocks Today for example it kept my phone awake for over 10 hours
Anyone ? I keep having this problem ...
Same problem here. BTLowPower keeps draining my battery.
I have bluetooth and Jabra headset off...
It usually happends when I unplug my GNex from charging.
Please help....

sorry for my bad english.
Same issue
I'm running a Toro Gnex with the Vanir AOSP ROM. It's buttery smooth, and I've had no problems at all, other than this specific kernel wakelock. Same scenario as the OP.
If anyone finds out more about it, I would be grateful!

I've been reading about this all morning. I run Automateit Pro and have it go into airplane mode at night. After losing 25% battery overnight, the investigation began. BTlowpower was keeping the phone awake. It looks like airplane mode can be the culprit, possibly in combination with Wifi set to always on. I am set up to turn Bluetooth off a couple of minutes after going into airplane model tonight, I'll follow up with my findings over the weekend.

Great, keep us posted. I also turn airplane mode on at night, but my Bluetooth is always off.
Did anyone try to hard reset their phone ? I called Samsung but I got the standard reply to hard reset my phone, I haven't tried it yet because I doubt it would work and I have a lot of authenticators on it and it's a bit of a hassle. But if any of you guys already tried it I would love to hear if it worked ! Thanks !

BTlowpower issue solved by turning Bluetooth on and then off again after Airplane mode activated. However, that caused another issue - modem_usb_gpio_wake to crush my battery. Doing more testing today to resolve that one - will post again when that one is solved.

After testing different configurations this weekend, it looks like turning off sync causes these 2 kernel wakelocks. I tested 2 states: Airplane mode + no Wi-fi, and no data (no Wi-fi + no Wireless data, voice signal on). In either instance, the wakelock occurs with sync off. Leaving sync on finally achieved the low overnight battery drain (< 5%) I've been looking for. Regardless, to avoid battery drain after shutting data off:
Turn Bluetooth On and then Off again. If you are using airplane mode (this may be overkill), also turn Wireless Data On and then Off again.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi thanks for posting !
Just to make sure I understand, you say the solution is to turn bluetooth on and off again after turning off airplane mode ?
Just for completeness sake, this is my situation: overnight I turn on airplane mode and I sometimes have the wakelock draining my battery during the day (but not always). Draining doesn't occur during the night as while it's on airplane mode I'm also charging it.
I will try every morning when I turn airplane mode off to turn bluetooth on and off again afterwards for a few days and see if that helps. Let me know if I misunderstood.
Thanks,
Jorn
Just found a kind of workaround at another thread, this might be helpful (if it works ).
It doesn't, the drain still occurs >_<

I actually have a workaround that works for me. During the night I turn off my phone instead of using airplane mode. I no longer have BTLowPower and I also am able to successfully connect every time very quickly with bluetooth to my carkit, which previously was very flaky. It's definitely a standard issue though with the galaxy nexus, I can reproduce it on 2 other galaxy nexi as well.
I just installed BetterBatteryStats two days ago, and I'm seeing the exact same results. I can't help but wonder if the issue is at all related to the kernel I'm using (LeanKernel v4.7), or if perhaps a resolution to the problem could be solved by a modification within the kernel code. The ROM I'm running is BAMF Paradigm v2.4, which is based on AOSP v4.1.2. Like the rest of you, I'd really like to get this fixed.

After three days or so, the issue seemed to go away on its own. I didn't make any changes to any of the apps I was running, nor did I update the kernel. I really have no clue what took care of it for me, but I haven't seen it since.

Weird, mine went away as well after toggling BT a couple times. Guess we'll file this one under unsolved mysteries
I can't say exactly when I noticed this, but it was at least since the CM10 stable, and I've tried a couple nightlies since then. Wifi never seems to turn off according to the battery chart, which I believe because I get somewhat worse battery life now. Had anyone else seen this, or have any suggestions?
Turn off WiFi when not needed. Also, WiFi can save your battery vs a weak signal

Well, I'm doing that manually now, but that's not a solution to the fact that it never goes into standby mode when not associated with an AP.
did you go into settings--wifi--menu--advanced and select keep wifi on during sleep only when plugged in?

No. I prefer it to stay on wifi when there's good signal, so I have only use good wifi connections set, but not to put wifi to sleep. Regardless of that, wifi should be in standby mode when not actively associated with an AP, such as when in the car or anywhere you haven't told it to remember the APs around you.
I have tried 3 different Nexus 7 cases on my new Nexus 7 and for some reason the magnetic "screen turn on" feature only works when Wifi is on. Otherwise the screen will not turn on at all, and I will need to press the power button to have the screen turn on.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? At first I thought it was the case but no matter what case I try this issue still persists.
Mine does the same thing. I have a suspicion it is by design but who knows. Gonna do some more searching of threads
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Mine works ok with wifi off or on, but if you leave it lose the Access Point after you shut the cover, it won't magnetic wake. Also if you leave it over night, sometimes it won't wake the first thing in the morning. After the first wake it is fine. If I turn on Bluetooth, that behavior goes away.
You might want to try booting into safe mode and see if the same thing happens:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397282
The longer mine sleeps the longer it takes to wake it up. I set to toggle WiFi off when sleep. I will test how it works, when it stays on, though this should be a bug.

don't wake up with magnetic
Same bug. I think
I will try to keep bluetooth on. (To save battery in sleep mode)
mine work on both states
yes, i found this bug from day1 (I bought the LTE just within 1 week and keep finding the scenario)
It didn't has this problem from previous Nexus 7.
If you turn on Wifi or BT, then your smart ON / OFF will work all the time.
I think may be these wireless communication setting causing the awake more sensitive. if all turn off, then N7 will deep sleeping and cannot awake by smart cover.
