Have you tried using a different USB port / cord? I know that our phones don't play well with 3.0 usb ports.
GL!

Try mtp mode

There IS a way to root your phone without using a computer if you can't get this figured out

Did you make sure USB debugging was checked in the developers section?

I'm at work so as soon ad I very home I'll try it. I odined back too stock and got all the software updates but not the download drivers notification. I did a factory reset to. Funny thing happened tothat I didn't mention. I deleted the drivers cause I noticed it wasn't recognizing my phone after trying it like 3 times. So I odined twice and on the second time it recognized it without the drivers installed. Now that knew gout me scratching my head.

Mounting to computer doesn't work

This is not a problem with my phone its a friends.
He has tried every cm9 stable, cm10, and other roms to see if it would fix he tried Odin back to stock but his phone wouldn't show up. He has all the drivers installed. But mounting mass storage just doesn't work. I've read a few threads where people say its a bug with t-989 but I'm not sure cause I don't own the phone.
Once again this is not my phone its a friends. I own a skyrocket he owns t989. Just trying to figure it out for him. Thanks for your support.
Edit: oh and it does charge through USB port just doesn't mount.

Is there any way to root galaxy s 3 for t mobile running 4.1.1 without a computer?

Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
As of right now, the only way to get root is with the use of the computer as of yet.
Being that seems to work pretty well I doubt there will be development to a root method without a computer.
Hmm, thanks for your feedback

What about mobile Odin pro? Then use that to flash the recovery of your choice. The reboot to recovery and install the superuser script?

Mobile odin requires root. So it can't be used to gain root.
Chainfire release a rooting method. I haven't tried it but have heard it works well. You still need Odin on a pc for any root procedure that I'm aware of.

Rooting is yes, only available via computer.

Do it the old fashion way.....this worked well back in the day....

Due to having a computer with non working USB ports....

If I take my phone to t-mobile can they update it at the store? My stepdaughter won't let me try on her laptop( she's a pain in the ass and doesn't like me anyways)
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Non rooted, no desire to root so Odin isn't possible
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Why not put all your things on a flash drive or external hard drive and go to the library might be able to do it there or some place else where there is computer access
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Still have to have to be able to DL kies, doubt I'd be allowwed to at library
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
In that case never hurts to try at the store or maybe go to a buddy's house
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
I've asked a few friends but they all said no after I told em we needed to DL kies. Even though I assured them kies is safe and will be deleted after we are finished. So whatever.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
That's ****ty... Im pretty sure The store won't do it.
And your friends suck.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
You don't really need root to Odin... just put it in dl mode. (Power+vol up)...
But that doesn't help you with the no usb thing. But you could probably Odin at a library...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Odin is safer than kies...and it doesn't require root/won't root your phone.

Yeah, what others said. Odin won't root it....unless you root it. Just flashing rom wont root it.
If no one on earth will let you use their computer for this.....then I'm gonna guess you're a known computer jinx or something and they don't want you breaking their stuff!

Interesting. It's worth a shot OP. Worst case, it fails and you uninstall. If it is successful, you can install mobile odin, then get the latest gb27 tar, and money. While you're at it, you will have to flash a cwm custom jb kernel, since you're on ics, and, MO won't flash modems, you'll need a jb modem to use data on gb27. Download the zip though of the modem . Good luck, let us know how it goes.
