Q: just purchased, what to expect? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I loved my N7 2012, up until the touch screen became unresponsive..... after my 6 year old dropped it and then tripped over it, completely destroying the screen....
I purchased off Amazon. I've been reading about touch screen issues. Anything else out the box I should look for? My original N7 had screen separation, and I just squeezed until it popped in place.
Any MHL issues? I use that sometimes.

Be careful if you are trying to buy a Bluetooth keyboard or earphone to go with your nexus 7, the older Bluetooth peripherals with Bluetooth 2.0 or older might not be compatible with the tablet.

Uh oh.... I purchased one with my N7. I read on the reviews that it's a newer model though. Biggest complaint about it was that it's advertised as a keyboard/case combo, and the case part sucks.
On an unrelated note, what's a good java programming and compiling app? I'm not trying to write java for android either. Just introduction to java stuff. I hate lugging my laptop the miles across campus.

It does have some Major MHL issues though actually, but this is not a hardware defect. Sadly your MHL adapter (And mine...) Are useless on this tablet as it uses a different and incompatable tech called SlimPort.

What? I can't use MHL 2.0 or anything?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4

No.
It's Slim Port, not MHL.
Not compatible. http://www.tested.com/tech/android/457205-mhl-vs-slimport/

Pogo Pin Dock does NOT come with a power adapter?!

Ok, I am a little bit ticked off right now.
I had a Nexus One. When I bought the N1 dock, it came very nicely packaged and with its own power cable AND audio cable. Its cost felt justified.
So, since I got my Galaxy Nexus I decided to order the dock for it.
I just got the dock (after waiting a week when it was 2 day shipping), I open the package and I pull out the cheapest flimsiest packaging ever. I pull out the dock (which does feel solid), and THAT'S IT! There is NO power cable and NO audio cable included. $68.xx for a freaking dock with NO cables.
I seriously feel like I've been ripped-the-****-off here.
I know their site says no audio cable included... so whatever, but to not include the charger either... that's pretty damn ****ty in my opinion.
I just thought I would vent here since I had not seen this mentioned any where else before.
Damn. At least throw in a cable!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Definitely! At least the car dock came with a lighter socket charger. I guess Samsung though it wasn't necessary/wanted to cheap out since we already have one from our phones. I'm more irritated by the fact that there's no way to manually turn off the screen when docked.
I thought the same thing when I opened my dock... I also had the nexus one and the dock... At least we got a second charger with that...
At least you can seek solace in the fact that the LTE dock is, for all intensive purposes, the same exact dock... for $90 and there still aren't any cables included. I actually bought the GSM dock for mine and sanded it down to fit my more portly LTE version because the price difference is bollocks in my opinion.

MHL problem?

Finally bought the expensive mhl adapter for the s3 and after hooking up my phone to my samsung px2370 1080p monitor, I don't like what I'm seeing. The picture looks really fuzzy and reminds me of interlaced output. Plus my monitor is reporting a resolution of 1920x1079. Anyone experiencing the same problem?

Im thinking its because I'm rooted to be honest, it works by shutting off the device first then plugging everything in then turning it on and it's supposed to pick up from there but nothing happens. The same with my One S.

It might just be my pc monitor. I can't even get it to work with my computer via hdmi (dvi works though, as well as with my 360 and ps3). The adapter looks legit to me. I'll be trying it on a different tv and/monitor in a bit
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I bought the new MHL adapter as soon as it was available from Samsung. Output from applications like Netflix is reduced quality, this is intentional by the Netflix app. If you play a HD movie, you will see the quality is very good.
My only problem was lag. It looked good, but it was the equivalent of playing a video game with a framerate of around 20 FPS, it made gaming impossible and movies frustrating. I was told it may be my MHL adapter, but I haven't gotten a new one yet.
Saying it's the adapter is the easy answer. I have one that works perfectly on almost any LCD TV I have tried, but on LCD monitors, I have issues usually. I have used it with an HDMI to DVI cable, and got the exact result you described. I think it has something to do with the monitor not recognizing the native output. I haven't used it on an HDMI monitor.
I can confirm it works quite well on almost all TV's.
Ok I think I know what the problem is now. Seems like the s3 only outputs tp 1080i, that explains the flickering and fuzziness on my Led monitor. Is there no mod or hack to at least make it output at 720p instead (since 1080p would probably be to demanding)? Why would samsung stick to just 1080i? Was it the same with previous phones like the s2?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Now that I'm on the puter it's gonna be easier to explain, I bought a T-Mobile MHL kit when
I got the HTC One S and rooted the device but for some reason it wouldn't work with it so
about a month after I had the One S I bought the GS3 and rooted it (still have both) and
tried it with this one and still nothing.
I was told by a few that it might not work on a rooted device but after doing the research it
seems that I'm the only one having this problem but I figured trying it on a different device
should show something, I'm at the point now that I'm sure it's the MHL kit and not a root
problem.
AFAIK only 1 cable/adapter exists that works with the s3 and its an official samsung product. Previous mhl adapters won't work due to a change in pin layout to the connector so if you bought one that isn't marked for the s3, the most likely isn't compatible and won't work. Even official s2 mhl adapters won't work

I agree. This 30 pin connector, proprietary charging, no HDMI, coupled with no JB 4.2 so no miracast, this is one disconnected, connected, wired and shackled but supposedly mobile device.
I've only had it for three weeks and I miss a more connected, but liberated device.
It's frustrating cause this could be soooooo good.

my playbook, and my note 2 use 2 amp chargers. I just lucked or on the 30 pin connector because I had a mini usb to 30 pin connector for my tab 2 7.0, and an extra cable.
The tf300 was a dream to type on with the dock, but honestly, my note 10.1 kicks the crap out of it. The oem cover works great, with the exception of a lot of e's that come out 3.

I had no idea that this was happening.
It would be awesome if Samsung could come up with a transformer-esque type of keyboard/cover, or even a touch-cover like the Surface.
It makes the idea of a "Note netbook/laptop" a good one, but with two separated accessories i.e. stand + bluetooth keyboard, that idea is gone.
Shame :/
The tablet must be a tablet, not a computer if you want a computer buy it separately. A tablet is made for commands through touchscreen, if you want to have a tablet with dock keyboard buy a tablet-pc ( i own one..)

Eh? I can find the Samsung connector (which is actually a standard called "PDMI") just about anywhere (at least in the States), I've got more charger options now than i had with my Moto Xoom, especially if you buy one of these. HDMI and AllShare Cast work on my device, too.
I've used 4.2 and we're not really missing much useful save the multi-user feature.
I have 4 BT Keyboards, including one with a built-in stick mouse and a cover that folks to make a stand; the combo (which is light enough I carry it around in a case with my Note) gives me everything I could get with the KB dock except maybe charging and it's apparently more portable as well.

This. I've been able to travel with only my tablet (on certain business trips even) and have most of what i'd needed to do be accessible that way.
I went to verizon yesterday & saw a Samsung branded Keyboard dock for the Tab10.1. I tried it with the display model Tab 2 10.1 & it fit. I thought that the Tab 210.1 & the Note 10.1 were the same size. I was gutted to find it was not. It works if you pull out the plastic guide/holder, but then it is kind of flimsy in there. Bummer.
Wasnt there a rumor somewhere that one of Samsungs next tablets was going to be transformer-esque? I could have sworn I read something a few months ago about it.

Well, with the GNote 10.1 LTE coming to VZ soon, I'd expect they'd be getting accessories there, too (and likely to be hugely overpriced), so I'd come back again a little while after the GNote's available in VZ stores.

That sounds sort of narrow-minded in my opinion. Why can't a tablet be both or why can't a computer be a tablet? For an artist like me, I would love the opportunity if tablets got powerful enough to rival their notebook counterparts and offered a desktop view as well as for easy access with a keyboard and trackpad.
With the move of ultrabooks , especially the Surface Pro, converging into tablet territory with full features, one must consider that to be a blessing than a curse. Think about it in this way: Would you carry a radio, cd player , portable DVD player with TV, game system and an ereader just to be able to use them, or would you opt for the simpler solution of an all in one deal? That is the number one reason why the iPod took off: portability. Not only can you get a radio, but a music player and now video, games and reading.
It gets roughly cumbersome to carry every single CD, DVD ,game cart/disc in addition to the hardware , let alone the books for brief reading in commutes in comparison to an all out deal.
For the average consumer and artist, such things are so hard to get that it is pushed towards the rich ,but now similar tech now exists that has the potential to allow for maximal power and capability and the ability to change form factors on the fly. Why should people have to be inconvenienced to buying several different products that can be brought under one device when it can be deducted into one singular product that is amazing and does it all , broadly speaking?
If we went by this flawed logic an mp3 player must play music only, but no radio , thus how would iPods and whatnot be popular if they didn't serve multiple functions simply?

Thanks.....I think. Glad to hear about the PDMI. Just have to figure out how to use it.
What I was trying too say is everything is an add on so my kit ends up being as bulky as my ultrabook and far more prone to losing some piece that makes the whole thing work. my last tablet logged about 100k+/- frequent flyer miles. Using one power brick with one power end, one multi headed usb, one multi headed hdmi, one universal battery charger brick fit neatly in an airplane amenity bag, and served two cameras, one phone and a tablet. Needed no OTG cable to get the CF card reader seen by the tablet. Because I have a GNex, I already have a data/sync switch on my usb cable.
The cameras are the hardest and heaviest to carry.
So far, I've had to add another amenity kit to add the adapters for the Note. And I still don't have a way of using it to run a projector or tv. My phone ends up doing that.

Nexus 7 Desktop Docks

So upon researching dock options, I see that the official dock is in the works, with a MSRP US of 50 dollars:

Has anyone come across any viable third party alternatives? I'm so ready to use this with my PS3 controller to get my gaming on.
Edit: Well, looks like I missed a digit on the date. Ignoring my ignorance, let's talk docks! I'm very interested in 3rd party options or the viability of the old one functioning with the 2013 refresh.

That's the old Nexus 7 dock
The date on that article is for July 31st, but back in 2012. It must be referring to the old Nexus 7.. the clue was the mention of a 3-pin connector on the side.
Right, so edited the OP to accommodate my terrible ability to read dates.
It looks like there are barely any options currently for a dock of sorts.
There is the incipio stand here:
http://www.shopandroid.com/incipio-fixie-universal-tablet-stand/6A39A12239.htm
There are a couple of Qi charging stands as well:
http://www.androidpolice.com/tags/qi-charging-stand/
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/qi-wireless-charging-pad-and-stand-p38173.htm
But again, this doesn't allow data transfer. It would be nice to place the N7 in a dock that is constantly connected to my desktop or by my bed for an alarm function.
The QI charging stand will take care of the second need, but data transfer would be nice as well. I'm very surprised we don't have docking pins.
I'm assuming being able to charge the device isn't a necessity, since you linked to the Incipio stand. I actually bought a black plastic stand at my local TJMaxx(or Ross, or Marshalls. One of those, lol) for only $4.99 or $5.99. I bought it for my Asus Infinity (10.1" tablet), and it works great in both landscape and portrait! Since getting my '13 N7 a few days ago, I've put it in the dock in both landscape and portrait as well. It also works great in either position! I've had my Note 2 in it, and even my Evo LTE before . Though, some of the display is blocked when either my Note 2 or Evo LTE is in this dock/stand. Just stating how versatile it is by being able to hold my 10.1" tablet, 7" tablet, 5.5" phone, and even 4.7" phone, all with perfect stability! If interested, you might want to check online for something similar. Knowing how well it works and how discreet it really is, I wish I would have bought at least 3 of these when the store had them in stock!
I'm gonna put some pics of the stand in the following post. Also pics of my Infinity an '13 N7 in both portrait and landscape position.

Microcenter has those for $6.99.
Another cheap option would be small photo easels. Foldable and prop your tablet up for useability anywhere in the house. They are often available at the dollar stores, so you really can't beat the price.
Microcenter has a nice-looking metal stand that raises the tablet if you want to use it as a secondary monitor.
None of these are docks, of course, but the design of the Cygnett stand would keep the charging cord out of the way.

It is pretty lightweight! It's hollow inside though, so you could easily add some weight to it! It hasn't been an issue for me in the few months that I've had it. My Asus Infinity is a pretty big device, but this stand handles that tablet just fine. Here's a picture of the bottom of the stand showing that it's hollow, but still has plenty of unused space inside of it to add your own weights to it if you wanted.

I completely agree with you with an official Asus/N7 dock!! Charger is a must (obviously), an HDMI port would be great, at least 1 USB port, and a 3.5 auxiliary jack for audio!! If they would release an official dock with all of these features, then I would not think twice about buying it(assuming it's less than $100, should be around $50)!!!! Even without the HDMI port, as long as the other 3 are included then I would buy it! ChromeCast is going to be a pretty common household item for all Android users, especially given the low price point! That said, an HDMI port isn't a feature that I would choose over an auxiliary audio jack! Sure I could just stream music to my home theater system using ChromeCast, but I also have smaller speaker systems that I'd like to be able to use without connecting via bluetooth(Jawbone Big Jambox for example), and they won't be nearly as loud as my home theater for when I'm not trying to have everyone in the house listen to the same thing as I am!!
Also, my Asus Infinity has a mini HDMI port built in to the side of the tablet. I mainly use it for gaming anyway, but especially when I'm wanting to play on my flat screen TV!! Just so easy with the Sixaxis app, a PS3 controller, an having the HDMI port right on the tablet! I have an HDMI - mini HDMI cable hooked to my TV at all times. Basically, I said all of that just to say that this is probably the main reason that an HDMI port on the official dock isn't really that important to me, and why I'd prefer the 3.5mm jack over the HDMI port. That's IF I couldn't have both anyway!

Freaking pricey for a wireless charger though!! QI chargers can be found around $30 pretty easily now. The dock you linked should have at LEAST a 3.5mm port on the back if nothing else for them to have thy audacity to charge that much for it!!! Geez!!!

have you seen the Tylt Vu? thats $100.
But this really isnt that pricy imo...I'd much rather pay $50 to have an elegant dock / stand that will charge in portrait AND landscape than buy a $30 pad that you have to lay the tablet down on and thus lose the functionality of it. Plus it wont slide off on this.
Putting a nice dock with a qi charger warrants another $20 to me.

just found this one. I haven't ordered yet, but I'm tempted. Looks like a legit charging dock for the 2013 N7.

It looks like it uses the USB port for charging. My experience has not been good doing this.

Compatible Samsung Dock?

So far there's not a Dock available for the note but I've found this two that maybe work, they're for the GS2-3-4. Obviously they're narrow because are designed for cellphones but who knows if they do the trick for the note. If someone has one and tried on their note, please let us know how it turned out.

I dont believe they work, they were discussed here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2476495
I can confirm that the dock I use for my Note 2 does indeed work with my 2014 Note 10.1.
http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/Mul...Galaxy-S2-Galaxy-Note-II-Black-MCH-I9500-01A/
The dock fits my Note 2 while still in the case, yet seems to be fairly stable holding the much thinner tab w/o one. Fairly cheap too at $6.71, $2 less than I paid for it.
While you're at it, pick up the BT speakers: http://t.rs-tk.com/t.aspx/subid/186...hone-Intelligent-Voice-Speaker-Red-MINS-597B/
The speakers are reviewed here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...ble-bluetooth-speaker-tvc-mall-lots-pics.html
Good.. Thanks, I think the first one I posted looks like it has a more longer area to hold the note... Didn't decide yet but now that you tried one helps a lot, thanks.
I have a similar Altec speaker, thanks anyway..

can you show us a picture of the tablet docked? I want to see how precarious it looks
Anyone tried the "New Single Desktop Sync Charger USB Dock For Samsung Galaxy Tab 3" on ebay?
It can hardly not work since it looks like the USB is just passthrough.. but the question is how well the tablet sits in it..
Sorry, can't post a link yet..

Here you go. Sorry, I was out of town for the weekend.
It's usable, but tap it super hard and it'll go over backwards. I wouldn't be afraid to charge it this way or do some light reading if you're careful, but it works much better with my Note II.
I'm using the Belkin Charge & Sync Dock for Galaxy S4.
Although it does work as a charger and stand for the note 10.1 2014, it wasn't really designed for it. You probably wouldn't want to do any heavy table use while it's on the stand, and it is not the easiest thing to slide the tablet onto the micro-usb jack.
I search almost weekly for a really good dock. One that is like the Sony Xperia Tablet Z would be perfect, if it had a usb jack in the middle/bottom.
This is looking more promising, I've just sent off for it...will let you know how it performs when it arrives.

Could you post some pics please? I'd buy one of this but I scared about tablet connector I think I could be damaged.

It's much much more stable than this one for S3/S4 (I have it too)
Besides of that it has a movable and shock absorbing part with connector. See pic.1

Hi Lads & Lasses,
Quick Update on the dock I sent off for.
The dock holds the tablet securely & it's very stable, the pics show it connected up to the mains via usb cable & charging the tablet & no problems, but I noticed when when connected to the PC via usb data transfer is no problem but it doesn't charge, this may be a prob for some users..but it's one which I personally can live with especially for the price.
Hope this helps!!!
