[Q] Question about Touchwiz and other Roms - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I might be getting a Note 2 since the 3 is too expensive for me right now. I do not like touchwiz all that much (well mainly the way the bottom dock area for apps are, I like the app circle in the middle as well as being able to customize my grid for home screens.)
Anyway, I'd like to keep the s-pen functionality as well as the dual app screen and etc. so is there a rom that keeps these features from samsung in but has the home screen and such similar to stock android? I noticed there's a stable release of cyanogenmod out, but I cannot find any full data on this particular rom other than "unoffical" versions of it by other people.
Or would I be better off sticking with getting a different launcher, and putting up with the app drawer and etc.?

Hi...
About the TW roms: hmm... I am using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2079291
Great sound, very smooth, very good skin. everything is working
For more to customize this rom i very good: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2336271
a clean rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2259479

If you want to keep full S-Pen funcitonality it has to be a rom built on a TouchWiz base.

Sounds like you want a Touchwiz based rom and a custom launcher like nova. That's how I roll and I love it.

[Q] Can Apps in Dock be Changed?

Is it possible to change the apps in the Dock/Row at the bottom?
I use Handcent SMS and I would prefer to have that in the dock area instead of the "messanging" icon. Any ideas? I don't want to use another launcher. I prefer Touchwiz...
Honestly, I thinks that's what's gonna be samsungs next uppdate. They a few minor things o7ut but it was all for making it look as amazinguyen as it does now. You can you use the stock android launcher, go to setting-manage apps.

Thanks! I hope this is fixed in the update.
I plan to replace the TouchWiz Launcher with LauncherPro on day one. This allows for a much much more customizable dock and ditches the goofy iphone type of side scrolling for apps.
I'd love to see the ability to change the drop down quick buttons, I don't use blue tooth or 4G so I'd love to be able to change that...
Unfortunately there is no way to change the shortcuts on the TouchWiz launcher. I just use LauncherPro, it's 100x better than TW and you're not missing out on the widgets since TW's widgets are terrible. ADW is good too.
One suggestion - search the market for Home Switcher, it makes switching between launcher apps much easier.
Also yeah I'd like to be able to replace the Bluetooth toggle with a 3G one.
Launcher Pro Plus
Launcher Pro runs great on my Samsung Epic. If you put any Home Replacement on, make sure you clear the memory and force close the Touch Wiz app. Launcher Pro runs much smoother than the TW Home.

Why replace stock ics launcher

Hey I wanted to know why replace stock ics launcher with another ics launcher!?!?! Would a replacement ics launcher have less of the occasional lag or stutter or improve battery lice!?!?! In just curious thank u . I am on android revolution and like it so I was wondering if changing to one of the other ics launchers would make my experience better. Thank u

Why don't you go ahead and try it out yourself?
See which one you like better.
My phone sits on my dash while I'm driving around, and I rather like it in landscape mode for listening to the radio and such. Stock Launcher doesn't do landscape. I switched to Nova Launcher just for landscape.

It does if you use MCR with landscape capable ICS launcher.
I don't like the ICS launcher so I've been using LauncherPro. I'm surprised it works since it hasn't been updated since May, but it's been 100% smooth and stable. Since it's abandonware, I just hope someone else releases one with the swipe action on the dock icons before LauncherPro stops working.

Do yourself a favor and try out Nova Launcher. It offers all of the benefits of the stock launcher (hardware acceleration) and even the same layout and style of the app drawer and home screen but adds so many additions such as changing the number of rows and columns, changing the number of home screens, landscape mode, adding more icons to the dock at the bottom.
+1 for nova, stock ics launcher with all the needed little extras

i personally hate having icons/widgets on my screen. i want it kept clean. instead, i use launcher pro and just rely on the 3-page dock at the bottom of the screen. i wish there was a launcher that was just a dock system and allowed you to make all the docks you want.
p.s. i also like the "hidden apps" feature much more then what other launchers offer.
Launchers
So I'm super picky about my phone (Crack Flasher), I have tried a few here is what I have eperienced so far.
Launcher Pro (Was my fav on past devices)
- runs sluggist compared to the ICS launchers, its not really bad, but you don't have the smooth feeling you are now used to on the SGN.
- Has landscape and lots of other goodies
- Will return to this if they upgrade it for ICS to run silky smooth
BRD Launcher
- Runs good, but because you have to use PPI moding it's super annoying when you want to install items or update them
- Couldn't get the landscape to work
Going to try Novo next.
I'm hoping it works with Landscape. I hear that you're ROM has to support Landscape for the Launcher, but this doesn't make sence to me since Launcher Pro works landscape no matter what.
I'll update after I try Novo Launcher...

Update:
I wish I would have tried Novo first.
- Landscape works perfectly (you can shut it off if you dont like it)
- Runs Smooth
- Lots of options
- Can remove search bar
- Grid is super customizable
- Can Hide Icon lables
There are plenty more but you get the point. So far best launcher for ICS on my Gnex.
FYI: Tested all of these on GummyNex. LTE

How many of the great layouts there do you think were created, or even possible on Stock Launchers?
I read this thread and installed Nova Launcher. It is a really nice ICS launcher, the best ICS launcher and one of the best launchers out there. Only reason I really got it was because of the landscape orientation. Google messed up there.

Launcher saves battery?

Different launcher different memory consumption. Which launcher out there consumes the less battery? Any ideas?

Usually i would agree, but the TW on the S3....is close to greatness i have ever seen from samsung
and im tired of ALL launchers, Go launcher is crap and is a battery hog. Adw Luancher ex is ok(smooth) but still same transitions and icon crap, APex Blah, Nova Blah, Trabuche BLah whats the difference again....lol. TSF shell......now this is a launcher that is SUPER DUPER smooth, and acutally makes the phone feel different in the way you set things up and locate them( probably my favorite After market Launcher)
then we have TW, the features are GREAT, the settings are cool, and yes it is smooth....once on a custom Stockish Rom. maybe just be me, but i actually think TW out shined most lauchers with this version.
just my OP though

The latest Touchwiz Nature UI on the S3 is pure awesome!
Samsung did an amazing job! They are definitely on the right track.
I never liked Touchwiz on the S2. Now that was bland and boring.
does TW allow custom icons and the use of beautiful widets and apps lke that?
nova launcher....
got both paid nova and apex...still prefer nova
Nova, purely for the in-App Drawer folder
Thanks for sharing
TW launcher is great, but it has one big bug. If you put two or more app icons that have long names (try Go SMS Pro next to Chrome Beta), you'll see the launcher starts to lag noticeably while shifting between homescreens and scrolling through scrollable widgets. Once you remove one of the two, the lag disappears. It's weird. I tried clearing data and everything and it's still there.
That being said, the only thing I miss about the TW launcher is the app drawer animation. Get Nova launcher, make the drawer background semi-clear. Then check the option to hide the dock divider. BAM! You have a lag-free version of the TouchWiz launcher.

Features? What features? It lacks features.... It looks way better than previous TW launchers and everything but it doesn't do anything special beyond that.
There are no gesture shortcuts, , no grouping/tabs/advanced folders like Nova has, no grid scaling options, no widget overlay options...

[Q] What launcher do you use

Hey Guys,
I have been using Go launcher since its launch, but have been thinking about venturing outside of my comfort zone and trying something new. I've always liked randomizing transition effects, and being able to change the grid layout... as well as having folders in the app menu (which is a great thing I love about the stock touchwhiz experience)
I have heard a lot of mention about Nova launcher, and Apex Launcher, but no actual reasons as to why these are better than what I already use.
Can you tell me the differences between them, and why you use the launcher that you use?
Thanks all:silly:
I know Nova and Apex were built for ICS so they ran better at one time. I'm not sure since ADW and Go were updated if that is still the case. I have been using Apex but the last couple months its not running as smooth as it used to so I switched to Nova. I'm impressed with Nova so far. Lots of options and great performance. Best thing is just try the free versions and buy the one you like best.
i've stayed with stock tw because i like the extra screen that pops up when i use the s-pen

ADW EX
I like making the icons smaller so they aren't so big and cartoonish on my Note II, as well as all the other various customizations.
Have yet to try my nova prime (run that on my atrix, OG note and touchpad). Leaving things stock atm...and its very hard to do.
Honestly...the only annoyance I have with the TW launcher is no option for 5x5 or 6x6. Thats why I will probably switch it

I've used ADW, Go, and Nova... Nova has been the best experience for me performance and options-wise but so far I'm using the stock launcher.
Would rather replace the navigation indicator with an extra row of icons but other than that, I'm quite content!
The power to choose between power and/or simplicity is the beauty of Android.

I can't deal with TW. Maybe it's improved but Nova and others have so many useful features. Extra dock icons, grid sizes, gestures, drawer folders, etc.
What TW features are you guys attached to? With Nova I can still double click the screen with the pen to pop up a note at any time.
Apex baby FTW
You can still always push your S pen and double tap for a note
Apex, but it's not as smooth as it could be, and you can't use the stock Weather widget with it.
I tried Apex launcher since I had it on my s2, but it's super choppy compared to the stock launcher so I switched back. Unless they optimize Apex launcher for jelly bean ill stock with stock.

+1. It feels the same as TW on GS2 with Gingerbread. I'm giving Go Launcher EX another shot (this time on GN2) because its features but I hate the toyish feel/icons and BS it loads as well.
Apex will be next.
Anyway to get the lock screen to look/act like AOSP? I dont mind the ripple effect but the look (TW) is
I'm using TW but have applied this MOD that allows you to have 5X5 rows and columns. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1990801
Nova largely because of it's backup of layouts which makes it much faster to setup new ROMs etc. Apex I know does the same thing and I don't really have a preference between the two. I had switched to Apex when they were the first to update to 4.1 source which made it smoother than Nova, but switched back after Nova updated.
I like ssLauncher (the original). It's in the play store. It has the most customizable home screen I've ever seen. No more restraining yourself to grids or default icons. It has a bit of a learning curve but so, so much you can do! Send me questions if you're curious & I'll try and answer them.

Touchwiz Launcher...I really want to like it!

Ever since I got my Galaxy Note 1 I really wanted to stick as stock TouchWiz as possible. The features it adds are enough to keep me from jumping to any AOSP based ROM, but with that I'd like to stick to as much stock TouchWiz stuff as possible. Modded lockscreens and launchers help, but sometimes things are still missing and it's really, REALLY annoying. Here's a couple pet-peeves I have, and I would LOVE to know if anyone knows of a good fix:
Cannot create folders by dragging icons on top of one another
Cannot resize most widgets
Cannot change the bottom dock when something has been recommended (i.e. when docked in a desk or car dock)
Bizarre slowdown when switching to a homescreen with any kind of widget
Lag when opening the widget drawer, and then turning each successive page
Thankfully the grid size has been fixed by modded launchers, but pretty much all of the above problems are keeping me from using the TouchWiz launcher. Any ideas on fixes?
I would love a lot more features from TouchWiz to, Hide Dock and Status bars, Gestures, Themeing, Icon Changing, Grid size changes. Would like to do this on the fly but Im not to sure what is needed for all the featrues to be functional.
In the case of the Note II all of its unique features, aside from the sheer size of the display, are tied to TouchWiz. The one thing I don't like about TouchWiz on my Note II is the wasted space on the home screens. More icons could easily fit in each row. Four icons per row is such a waste, IMO.

I agree, if TW had a lot more features it would make it hard to leave behind. But the lack of simple features is such a let down at times. 5.5" screen and like stated above what in the world were they thinking of just making it a 4x4 none rotating launcher?
Thank god for the XDA community though and all the available mods/roms that at least made TWiz a little better. Like mine is a 5x5 with rotation. Not much improvement but it helps. Still going back and fourth between it and Apex. Only draw back to Apex is the Sammy specific features wont work on it.
Most or all of the things you are looking for are possible if not through stock than surely through custom roms... would bw nice to see an AOSP/TW hybrid tho
