[Q] HTC Desire HD. GPS not functioning. CyanogenMod 10.1 (Mustaavalkosta) - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I’m quite a newbie. I’ve search all the web for a solution or a similar problem but I couldn’t find any. Here is my problem.
A friend gave to me his old HTC Desire HD. He rooted it and installed the ViperDHD 2.3.0 ROM which should be based on ICS. I really don’t liked this rom so I decided to switch to chyanogenmod 10.1 the Mustaavalkosta version, precisely: cm-10.1-20130727-UNOFFICIAL-ace-SR1.1.zip. I try to installed it directly but I couldn’t. I try different times, when I find out that the phone was with s-on. I don't know (and my friend do not remember) if it was s-off when he installed the Viper ROM.
Anyhow, I managed to obtain s-off (following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835746 (only the part on the s-off procedure).
Than I was able to install CM 10.1 (yesterday updated to R2). The installation went well (btw this rom is great). The only problem I have is that the GPS is not functioning (also the GPS icon is not showing in the status bar). Searching on the web I discovered that this problem could be fixed with a newer version of the base band (my version is 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04.28_M).
I downloaded the suggested one and tried to flash it, without any luck tough.
What I noticed in one of many reboots is that the phone was back again in s-on. I don't know why nor when it happened (i think at the first reboot of the phone but is just a clue). I tried again with the same method to obtained s-off but now this is not functioning.
For what I red on various thread, one thing that maybe could solve my problem is to downgrade the phone to a stock rom, turn s-off, change the radio and back again on CM 10.1.
I‘d prefer not to downgrade to the stock rom (also not sure if I can since s-on), I would like to know if anybody has an idea about this.
Maybe the information I get when I load in the boot loader could be useful:
*** UNLOCKED ***
ACE PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0029
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.14.04.28_M

Hope the English is good enough to understand my problem.
Cheers,
Omunculus

Dear Omunculus,
I was in the same situation just a few hours ago and was able to resolve my GPS issue with the procedure describe here:
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/18880-gps-broken-since-611/page__st__20#entry171860 (unfortantely, I'm not allowed to post links yet)
After the reboot, the GPS icon was flashing in Google Maps (it did not before) and after a couple of minutes, my phone could successfully acquire a location fix. I used the app "GPS test" to verify that GPS was indeed working.
Chances are that it will also work for your, given that I have almost the same specs.
Radio: 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04.28_M (same as you)
ROM: cm-10.1-20130924-UNOFFICIAL-ace-SR2.zip (slightly newer than yours)
Please note that I neither had to flash my radio nor did I have to enable S-OFF. I hope this solution works for you as well.

No need to turn s-off or change radio.
The first time I installed JellyTime (4.2 - R8), I had a similar issue: GPS not working.
I flashed back the stock ROM used to root the phone in Glevitan's tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2169515
From that stock ROM, I turned on GPS, I used an app to verify that GPS was working (GPS Status), after a few minutes I was able to get located. I re-flashed JellyTime and it worked.
My phone is still S-ON and with the original radio ROM. I posted a few messages about it a few months ago, look for them if you want more details.
Updating the radio is quite dangerous, better know exactly what you do.
Some other people were reporting that sometimes the GPS antena needs to be physically fixed.
Good luck with your phone.

Thank you very much IRQs, it functioned. Now I'm see the gps icon and he detects my position. I have only the feeling
that it is extremely slow to find satellites and the position.
But now it ain't the same league, it ain't even the same sport.

Thank you Math59 for your reply. I know that updating the radio could be dangerous, but it was all my reading about this problem
that convinced me. I'm still convinced (based only on my lecture) that changing the radio could improve the performance of wi-fi, gps and 3g too. Obviously, now that everything works properly, I will not try anything risky.
My mobile had also a problem with the GPS antenna, but that was the first problem I solved (without any luck).

if your now s-off its just a case of downloading the correct radio and installer and install it as you do with a rom via sd-card- i did it this way via 4ext on my DHD.

Try a new GPS antenna, solved my problems. First I had very bad signal, and after a while I had no signal at all (even with newest radio). The antenna is located inside the flashlight cover, which you can replace with a new one. There are a lot available on ebay for only 4-5 euro's, search for "desire hd gps antenna". The old antenna broke in multiple pieces when I removed it (3 years old), so it was clear this was the problem. I now have very good signal!

I solved the same problem by soldering a drop of pond over the golden contact in the antenna

Sometimes it's because bad contacts indeed, then you can bend the spring contacts slightly or a drop of pond on at the cover side as you suggested. This wasn't an option for me because the metal antenna strip inside was broken. You should measure a short circuit between the two contacts, and this was not the case for me.

[Q] Possible to completely re-virginise a rooted set?

Hi.
I rooted and flashed my DHD with Cyanogen mod initially soon after getting it, and currently have LeeDroid running. Today, flashed to the latest verison of LeeDroid... (and don't think the 2 are linked), my speaker promptly stopped working. Telephone calls uisng the handset are fine, connecting a wired handfree to the 3.5mm port get ssound as well. But, activiting the speakerphone phone during a call, or media playback (videos I had made using the camera) is completely silent.
I've tried the basic, resetting to defaults, flashing back to an earlier version of LeedRoid, which had worked perfectly for weeks on the phone before, but, the speakerphone seems goosed.
The phone is still under warranty, so, thinking of sending it back to 3. GIven the phone is rooted, s-off, different Kernel, Radio etc etc, if I flash to stock HTC firmware, would they be able to tell if I've been tinkering iwth alternate firmware?.. and.. consequenlty, refuse warranty service?.
Is there anyway to completely make the phone factory fresh?
Thanks.

Just download the latest rru. You can get from shipped-roms.com.
Thanks Parttime...
I seem to recall reading somewhere that S-Off (or possibly something else) cannot be reverted once done, and even flashing with stock firmware doesn't put it back.. is it true?...
Btw, whats the 1.72.405.3 Rom at http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Ace?
I thouhght 1.32.405.6 was the latest one, but it had some battery drain issues, so, 1.32.405.3 is the receommended stock firmware?.
Riz
Why do you care?
The software is not under warranty (you did read the EULA didn't you?).
The worst they can do is reload the original HTC software.

The recommended version is the latest one, 1.8x.xx. There are many threads already to explain this.
You are wrong..
1,8.x.x appear to be carrier specific roms...
flashing even using the stock rom RUU executable DOES NOT turn S-off back to on, its needs to be done before de-rooting the phone...
thats what I've managed to dig up in searches...
I could be wrong... But...
I put too much of your quote in. I was saying that it is not true that you can't undo S-OFF (Go back to S-On).
To do that you can use the one click tool.
Sent from my Ericsson T39m
Actually, the question was quite clear. Anyway, as it happens, the S-On needs to be done before flashing the stock firmware as you still need root access for the S-on tool.
Since I had already upgraded to 1.32.405.6 RUU , I needed to get root back, so followed the guide on the Cyanogenmod wiki (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_HD:_Rooting) to get root (adb, push psneuter etc)... got it to the point of temp root... ran s-on tool, the phone status in recovery now states S-On. The next step was to flash 1.32.405.3 as PD98IMG.ZIP. I had planned to do it anyway, just to try see if the speaker MAY come to life again..
Was getting too late, so, went to sleep.. and today... was woken up by the phone rining for a phone call... speakerphine is working, video files play with proper sound.
Don't really know what fixed it. When I lost the speakerphone, I was on LeedDroid 3.0.1 (for about a day and a half), I then downgraded to the previous LeedRoid version (which was 2.2.3 and worked wonderfully), no joy with the sound... then flashed right down to stock 1.32.405.6, no joy for 2 days.. during whihc I poked the 3.5 mm jack with the handsfree pin, jiggled the mini usb charger in the port at various angles... still no joy..
After s-On last night, it seems to have fixed itself!!!

[Q] 2 HTC Wildfire but both not the same!

Hi all,
I have a little or it could be a big problem so I'm hoping you can help me here. I have 2 HTC Wildfire's one is Red the other is Brown. (Both on BUZZ)
Now I have debranded the brown one first and it worked a treat and I was able to update via WIFI and now it's up to 2.2. So then I decided to do the red one but that caused me nothing but problems started off will touchscreen not working but I found the kernel to reconnected the touchscreen. When I go in to HBOOT the touchscreen codes are different to each other, anyway once I got it working I tried to update via WIFI and it found the update but it would not procced to finish it so I had to root it via the sdcard and it worked but I can't tell if the WIFI update will work.
Now the problem is I have lost all my wallpapers on the Red one but not the brown one as it is still there. So how can I replace the wallpaper thats gone missing and how can I be sure that the WIFI update will work?
When I go through the screens they all match the same including the build numbers etc what has happened?
If this is any help I used ClockworkMod v3.0.0.1 (I think) but I can't get to it now without doing it all again. I don't mind doing it again if needed.
Plus another thing I remember is, I did some tests on both phones when I ring them it shows a different screen to each other, is that possiable?
I hope someone can help as we in need to use these phones.
Many thanks John
Did you use Revolutionary to gain S-OFF on the Red one? In that case, losing wallpapers, and the setup wizard is a known bug. The fix can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156713
Also, Revolutionary works when you are on Android 2.2.1 (On the updated HBoot). So, even though it may have shown that the update failed, it must have been installed successfully for it to work.

Thanks for the link I give it ago later and report back.
Many thanks for replying.
Long last, Many thanks 3xeno for your help, Now I have both phones matching with all apps doing as it ment to do, I also had to do the brown one as that had setup problems so I ran the same program for both and it worked a treat. So many thanks for all the posts and I sure will be staying on and learn more about these phones.
Many thanks to you all.

[Q] Should I flash radio? (Intermittent reception of SMS, poor call signal)

Greetings!
Thanks for stoppin' in. Hate to clutter the posts, but all my browsing/searching through the site thus far has lead me to older links that don't seem to answer my questions.
My history with my HTC Droid Incredible has always been a mix of positive and negative. One thing I've always been plagued by is a hit-or-miss experience with my call signal and messages.
Details:
-Incoming calls don't ring and go straight to voicemail (I use google voice).
-Many calls are plagued by static or generally poor signal.
-Text and image messages are often not received, or when they are, they often arrive hours after the fact (even the next day).
I've been told that flashing a ROM to a rooted device may include flashing the radio and that each ROM may include its own copy of a radio version. Is this true?
Is flashing the radio typically part of the ROM?
What version of the radio is considered best or most efficient for a VZW HTC Droid Incredible currently?
Is it worthwhile to flash the radio separately?
I'm currently on the beta ICS Miui rom and running smoothly aside from a small handful of buggy behaviors. I've seen these issues on stock as well as Cyanogen 7 and other MIUI ROMs. This is also my second (or third?) Incredible, having had it replaced under Warranty in the past and have typically always had some issues of this kind. Typically, I've just considered some of it to be part of the luck of the draw when using a cell phone.
Anywhos, thanks for the help, folks! If you need further details, please feel free to ask.
No custom roms come with radios that i have ever seen.
Flashing a raido may help your situation and it may not. As to which radio, it is really a matter of which one works best for you.
Here is a page with a bunch of radios that are all compatible with the incredible, even the ones labeled evo. http://dinc.does-it.net/radios
I go with the 07.07 radio (GB update version) it works fine, that or the newest Evo radio. 08.08 or 12.19. I live in a splotchy signal area and from playing with it, it seems the newest ones work best for me.
Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the suggestions and input - I'll look into it as soon as I have a chance to get to a computer and such.
Looks like I need to re-flash my ROM as it is, given the alpha of Miui ICS I've been using isn't behaving very dependably at this time.
After I figure out a way to back things up and actually load into recovery (another mysterious issue has recently cropped up where I cannot get past HBOOT), I'll get a fresh ROM done and try another radio.
Anything I should be aware of regarding the radio with consideration to the process or eventually returning to stock if needed?
Kudos!

General Update:
I tried a number of different solutions to my recently developed issue of being unable to boot recovery. I could get into HBOOT, but every time I tried selecting Recovery, it would default into another reboot of HBOOT. ROM Manager hasn't been any assistance either, as directing it to load into Recovery only brings up HBOOT.
On a whim, I decided to go ahead and try re-flashing Recovery (first option in ROM Manager), despite it showing that it was updated to the latest edition. I then attempted to reboot into Recovery right after and ...drum roll... it worked! Go figure. -_-;; ah well! Figured the suggestion of re-flashing the Recovery might help others looking for a solution.
I'm going to go ahead and see about wiping and flashing a new, stable ROM and then I'll jump into the radio suggestions above.
Thanks again!

I'm looking at the link provided by the other person above and seeing interesting naming patterns. IIRC I'm currently on the 2.15.00.07.28.
Just want to make-sure I'm reading this right - is 2.15.10.07.07 newer than 2.15.00.11.19? I would guess so, plus I'm gathering that it was the version you suggested.
Further, what are the effects of using an EVO radio? Sorry for being such a noob, but I'm honestly curious!
Thanks.
Nothing wrong with using an evo radio. I use the 07.28 myself but its because it works best in my area.

Correct, 07.07 is newer than 11.19 radio. 11.19 was released in November of 2010, 07.07 was in July of 2011.
Thanks! Learn something new everyday.
I completed flashing the radio! Yay.
Didn't realize at first that it needed to be flashed via HBOOT (though I should've assumed such based on the name), rather than Recovery, but got it taken care of w/o incident.
Immediately, I've seen an increase in signal strength (max bands), and received a text msg that would've been sent earlier this morning. I'm looking forward to seeing further improvements!
Thanks everyone for your assistance.
i use the evo 08.08 radio and it works like a charm...i tried all the radios but i found this one works the best!
How are you guys flashing these radios to your incredible phone? I kept trying by booting into HBoot and renaming the radios to PB31IMG.ZIP but it won't flash it, because the Security mode is ON S-ON. I have the OTA GB update with 07.07 but I can't seem to turn S OFF

You must have s-off to flash radios. One question, what is your hboot version? To attain s-off for:
.92 then follow this guide here
OR
1.02 then follow this guide here
The only experience I have and can reliably speak on is installing radios while s-off AND having hboot .92. I can't speak to the success rate of installing a radio with hboot 1.02, it's entirely different and unfamiliar to me.
I recently started using the 12.19 evo radio and it is much better regular signal wise although somehow 3g seems spottier

[Q] GPS not working after fixes.

I've been having issues with my GPS on this phone as long as I can remember.... I tried using the soldering fix, the various software fixes to no avail. I upgraded my radio to July 2012: Radio 12.69.60.29_26.17.14.11_M - AT&T Inspire 4G 3.20.502.52 (Latest)
before trying all these hacks, and I now just realized I can't downgrade this radio since it's bugged. (I confirmed I cant downgrade)
Is there any way to downgrade? Could the radio be the cause of my GPS not working at all? I don't feel it's hardware, because the GPS **MIGHT** get 1 sattelite lock if I'm very lucky and in a very open area. Does anyone have some other suggestions/options I can try?
Any other trouble shooting processes I can perform?
If you have rooted phone, you downgrade phone you can PD98IMG.zip file by inserting a memory card and launch the bootloader
try flshing a different rom, such as viper dhd, sabsa,. I had similar bad luck with others but with a better rom I had better gps success

[Q] Gaining S Off in HBOOT 2.19 to get WiFi working

Hello one and all!
So I have been playing with new ROM's for my EVO Supersonic. My Daily Driver is AlienwareMod Solar Flare Series V and LOVE it!
So I have been given an old EVO was going to play with it and explore new ROM's. I had rooted it about 2 years ago and she kept stock Sense on it so for some reason I left S-On. Although I am unlocked in the bootloader, and I have been reading on several forums that I dont need to have S Off anymore to load a rom, I seem to be having a common problem that I have been reading about. I can load custom ROM's on just fine, but when I fire up the WiFi the system slows down, and the WiFi cant lock on to a SSID. know the SSID sites are good and I have been trying to narrow donn the problem and have it down to these...
1. I need to achieve S-Off. Although I have many of files for when I did my personal root/unlock I dont have the all and MikMik's site dosnt have hem anymore.
2. I have partitiond a small 2G SD card with Ext3. The Kernel may not tolerate this? I have the stock Lionfish on but have tried others with no sccess on Ext2, Ext3 or Ext4 formatting.
3. I have not 'actvated' the phone on my Sprint Account. Is there maybe some files it would need to download?
4. Recovery. I am using ZZzRemove to really clean the phone... and use the 'Stock" ammon Ra to wipe x3. I prefer SmelMod but cant load a new recovery becuase it locks with a message PC360IMG Parcing.
5. HBOOT 2.18. I think i remember something about how this was locked??
I am thinking I will need to do a RUU to get an earlier version of HBOOT in order to get SOFF. But again, is that mission critical to getting the WiFi to work?
So I am stuck with a bit of a mental bootloop! Any thoughts would be welcome! Screenshots will be loaded of my Recovery and Bootloader upon request......
Thanks!
Your issue sounds like it could be hardware-related. Whether or not you're S-off should have no bearing on how well WiFi works. S-off simply means that the bootloader security is off and should not affect how or when WiFi works. As far as the files needed to gain S-off, shoot @Captain_Throwback a PM. He was the OP of the thread over on the MikMik page regarding rooting & S-off with the latest Hboot. As far as running a older RUU, you won't be able to since you're S-on.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G LTE
I recommend this site/guide: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html
All the files you need should be there. As for the WiFi issue, that seems to be more device than software related. Being unlocked versus S-OFF won't affect your WiFi signal.
First of all it is an honor to have you reply Captain! I have been going over a lot of posts on here for a few years and have seen much of your handywork. I know the link you sent very well, that is what I used to Root/Rom my Daily Driver Evo with great success!
I will go back and revisit it again, but according to all the comments so far, I wont need S-Off since I wont be doing too many flashes. What is keeping me from just running the Revolutionary Utility is because it seems the S-Off utility requres HBOOT 2.16 or lower.
If I could, a few thoughts. I know that S-Off doesnt driectly affect the WiFi but I was curious if it was a Kernel issue and I have read that you cannot load a kernel successfully without a custorm, quality recovery and you cannot load a recovery without S-Off. I know when I had the phone at first I could jump on WiFi's easy-peasy... but when I loaded any ROMS (Sense, non Sense, JB variants etc etc.) the WiFi's just wont fire up or connect.
Ironicly, I was messing with the phone with a Odexed Sense Rom (rooted stock) it did connect today (after giving hassle for 2 days I just put it down and left it for a while). Maybe I am just being impatient? I have read that sometimes new ROM's and kernels take a few days to 'settle' in. Sorta like the Matrix!!
As an asside.. .and not part of this thread..... With Kit Kat using ART and not Devalk is there hope new life with these older phones?
Thanks to all!

You can install a custom recovery without being S-off. You can install it from the SD card via the bootloader or by using fastboot commands. From there you can flash a custom kernel. You obviously have a custom recovery installed already if you are flashing ROM's. I never flashed any custom kernels on my EVO when I ran Sense, but it helps to read the OP of any ROM or kernel thread to make sure that there aren't any issues with Wifi functionality. Do you have issues with a particular router you're trying to connect to or just Wifi in general? Did you have issues with WiFi when the phone was totally stock?

Great questions! Let me give you some answers!!
I rooted this phone about 2 years ago so dont remember all of my handywork. It is running
*****UNLOCKED******
HBoot- 2.18.0001
Radio - 2.15.00.12.19
Dec 21 2011
I probably used Revolution to do so. I did it with mine! When I got this phone a month ago, I factory reset it and Launched WiFi with no problems. I was using my home router which has had no problems with any other devices.
Only when I started to flash a ROM (I have tried team DIRT unofficial 4.2.2 as well as Thundershock, Nitro, and Jellybread) they all would load fine and be responsive until I tried to launch the WiFi and then it would either be stuck on scanning, or just drop out and then the operating system becomes unstable.
I then went back to a Sense Odexed Stock Gingerbread ROM and although I saw the WiFI launch and connect, it would drop out every few minutes.
I couldnt make a Nandroid since the recovery doesnt have that option. I am using RA-supersonice-v2.3 with ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE to flash.
I cant seem to load any other recoveries. I thought it was because I am still S-ON. It says Main Version is Older Update Fail! And that is using the RA-supersonic-v4.3-smelkusMOD
Any thoughts? I am willing to accept bad hardware, but seems like a weird coincidence that all of a sudden the WiFi would drop out.
Answered my own question
Update!
Well I have successfully ported my operating system to the new(er) EVO 4G that I got from my friend. Looks like I needed to contact Sprint and have them help me reset the PRL and MEID. The problem was I had to quick flash a Sense ROM in order to use the dial pad to input all the codes.
After that, I seems the ROM (Solar Flare Series V) is much more stable, and I think everyone else is right, the hardware may have issues since the Bluetooth and the WiFi seem to be dropping in and out.
And so... looks like I may load this up with a Media Based ROM to act as an entertainment device and looking to go jump on a Samsung Note 3.
If only I could somehow install a LTE receiver chip! Maybe I will post that question as a new thread.
