[Q] Samsung Note 2 emergency calls only - please help - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay guys, youre my last hope, its now 8am and ive been at ths since 6pm yesterday evening and im on the verge of tears!
Got a preowned Galaxy Note 2 yesterday afternoon, the owner showed me it working on a 3 sim so I know its working and I know the IMEI isnt blacklisted.
Got it home, put my 3 sim in, all working fine. Then I realised it was running a slightly older version of android than my old phone. Couldnt update over wifi, kies wouldnt let me update, checked the phone status and it said 'modified'.
So me being me, impatient and all that, I used Odin to update it to androinf 4.1.2. Ever since then, its been showing emergency calls only.
Here's a quick rundown of what I've tried;
- rooting the phone
- put 4 different roms on it
- put the stock firmware on
- put a rom on for the modem (which had switced to an invalid IMEI number somewhere along the line but is now fixed)
- factory reset
- toggle plane mode
- sim in, sim out, sim in, sim out...
- checked my sim in my old phone - working perfectly
I cant think of whay else ive done. Ive been at this for 14 hours straight now.
Basicslly, I know the phone was fine when I got it. Ive done something to it, and I cant for the life of me figure out what ive done.
The only thing I can think is its the files ive read so much about, EFS files or something like that... I didnt take a back up of them before my impatient attempt at upgrading to android 4.1.2...
Can someone please help me? I think ive read every post on this site about this issue and nothing mentioned seems to work for me! Im literally on the brink of tears cuz I just want to play with my gorgeous Note 2!
Thank you so much in advance for any help, hints, tips or advice.
Thank you.

Just flash the latest modem, it happened to me yesterday and it is fine now after modem flashed

XDA has a thread containing links to download modems for your phone... do a Google search. Download, then use odin and flash.
If you're on n7100, go to this link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044937
If you're on n7105, go to this link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031575

[Q] No Service - Insert SIM card. Does not recognize SIM after Root with custom ROM

Rooted my AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note ii (SGH-I317)
Installed custom ROM and now get no service.
Upon checking Settings -> Mobile Network
It says: INSERT SIM card Insert SIM card to access network services
About Devices has all the correct information except:
Baseband version says: UNKNOWN
How do I fix this?
Did my SIM card somehow and need to get a new SIM and call AT&T to reactivate another SIM?
My guess is that I would need stock ROM image to fix this but cannot find it.
I did find Stock Rooted I317UCALJ2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1986556)
image but still no Service.
Any help would be appreciated as my phone is a BRICK now and useless.
thanks
i have the exact same problem and can't seem to find an answer...
restore stock rom and still nothing...
did you flash a ROM & Radio for the international Note II (N7100 or N7105)? check your phone for an IMEI number; if it's not there, then you'll have to fix that first. you aren't the first to have this problem and i've read other posts where users were able to correct the problem.
I like how no one responded for 2 months.
Worst case scenario flash stock and triangle away to 0 flash counter amd take it back. Lol. Say it stopped working.

Your comment makes a lot of sense... I'm running root on stock and didn't have a problem. I've recently installed CMW thru Odin which I'm pretty sure I did right but then...I installed a kernel to be able to overclock... could the kernel have mess up my radio? I'm not able to pull up my imei... Can you point me to the right directions in order to restore my stock Rogers kernel?

I have been here. Installed the CrashRom which was probably not meant for 1317s. Though I loved the ROM, my model number was displayed as 7100, IMEI was null and mobile network would display insert sim message.
If you watched the installation of the rom.. you would have noticed that at the end it rewrites your modem/radio files. Thankfully even after a wipe, the all important NV folder was there.
I was able to find the original AT&T rom at stockroms and also the original modem files for the 1317. I did a full wipe and installed this rom back..and thankfully the radio was back online. Didn't have to flash the modem. Now with a working phone, I wanna read well before I flash my rom again.
Hope this helps. Though I am a newbie.. If you need any further information.. feel free to send me a message.

If you look in the development section in the All in One forum link, there is a link to the stock rogers ROM and radio.
I don't know if you have done this but it hasn't been mentioned in the post so I thought I would mention it.
I had the same happen to me. The radio just quit. I had a circle with a slash through it. I Odin flashed the stock tar and no luck in fact it got worse and I had to get phone replaced. I have a ton of flashing experience and this was a first for me. I think like someone mentioned above it was a mix match ROM with some pieces from the international version although it was posted as an AT&T ROM. I still have to send it back but after seeing that someone above fixed theirs I am sending a PM

Yeah that's exactly what happened to me, lol, installed the CrashRom. But thanks to this failure of epic proportions, I've learnt so much and I've succeeded in restoring my Rogers modem files
Now I got my nandroid backup, and if I mess up again, I got my Rogers stock ROM, radios, and kernel with me at all times

I know from past experience using ODIN for the Droid Charge, we had to pull the SIM before flashing. People were getting their SIMs fried sometimes. The remedy was to remove until the flash was complete. Avoid touching the contacts though.

I wanted to bump this as I am having the same issue. I tried using Odin to reinstate the stock rom and radio and still nothing.
So this happened to me and after I unrooted and factory reset I had no luck, called Att and got a new one. But I don't know why it stopped reading my sim, it. Worked in my iPhone 5. Strange

can u give any links to these forums, yes i install n7100 rom on my i317 and yes i don't have a imei.
Well my friend ...I've got to tell you up front ...that the likelihood of getting your device repaired on your own is remote at best...
You have damaged the device partitions ...and likely do not have a usable backup of the EFS folder..
The EFS contains the IMEI number used for restoration purposes...
I'm not going to tell you that a repair cannot be done..as a select few users were able to fix a bricked device...but I will suggest your best solution ...IMHO
Contact the good folks at :
mobiletechvideos.com
And let them know what you did..
They offer a complete restoration service to repair your device correctly ...and can likely do the job in about a week...
They are located in Texas, USA I believe ...and they have an excellent reputation for quality service...
Your choice of course...but if I were in your situation...I'd send the device to them in a second...
Time is money...at least for me...and although I could probably fix it...I don't have a RIFF BOX...or a JTAG ...
Others will post up with links to help you...and after you have a chance to look them over ...you can decide..
Very sorry for the damaged phone....g

t989D problem
I have a similar problem. I installed Superandroid 4.3 on a telus/koodo s2 t989D. I had to update the radio to flash the rom. I used CWM for that.
Now the info I have on the phone is
model sgh t989
android version 4.3
baseband t989uvmc6 .
The phone is not reading my SIM at all. It shows my carrier but no signal strength at all. I have read the above post. My IMIE number is still there.
Any help

Help! No service!

Alright this might be long.
So last night, I was on the 11th November, 2012 nightly for CyanogenMod 10 and everything worked perfectly. Then I heard about the Cyanogenmod 10 stable so i immediately downloaded it on my device and upgraded. The camera wouldnt work so i rebooted it a couple times and then downgraded back to the 11th november nightly. This is when the issues started. Essentially, i would get 3 bars but it would say that i wasnt getting any service and I could only make emergency calls. If the bar was 0 or 1, then it would say my carrier, but wouldnt allow me to text or call.
This morning, I tried reflashing several times the firmware (CM10 stable 10.0) but the service still didnt work. Then I flashed (using ODIN), Touchwiz Stock ROM but still no service. I even switched SIM Cards from my carrier, yet nothing has worked. I tried flashing a root injected ROM yet the service is still the same.
I don't have warranty with my carrier because I bought the phone unlocked and am using an LTE sim. I do have the samsung warranty though (1 year).
Just some details
Phone model: SGH-i747M
Phone carrier: Virgin Mobile (Canada) (Bell Subsidary)
Current ROM: Android 4.0.4 Stock.
If anyone has any troubleshooting tips, please comment, otherwise Ill have to send my phone back to samsung D:
Thanks for reading and (possibly) helping. ^_^

N7100/N7105 sim problem / no mobile network

Hi guys, happy new year to you all.
I received my new Note 2 just after Christmas and love it. Decided to root ( using Zedomax's method) all was fine until i installed Ressurection Remix which gave me the crossed out circle for mobile network. Thinking it my be a compatibility issue i tried several other ROMs such as, Hyper note, Veindroid, Omega etc all with the same outcome.
Although the phone settings tell me its an N7100, the start screen says N7105, if that means anything? When i go to my mobile network settings it says sim not installed ( or something to that effect)
I haven't yet gone back to factory firmware to test but I will shortly. Tested the sim in an other phone to confirm it works, and also tried flashing my carriers modem via CWM. Nothings worked so far and was wondering if anyone knows of anything i could try before downloading the stock firmware. The phones never been dropped so if its a hardware failure ill have to Triangle away and send it in for warranty.
Currently back on Ressurection Remix, which works fine apart from being able to receive calls, SMS or access data through 3g.
Thanks in advance
I'm no expert but would say you have installed the rom for the wrong phone. Either 7105 on a 7100 or vice versa.

Try to install a custom rom again that is compatible to the version of your phone. Wipe everything, wipe cache, wipe factory..etc.
Thank you guys, it was the wrong ROM.
In the beginning i was searching for Galaxy Note 2 Roms/Root/etc, i wasnt aware that there was two versions. Mine ended up being the N7105, and i was installing N7100 roms.
As mentioned in the OP, i had the N7105 boot text but what confused me was that the 'About Phone' was saying N7100, but that was already after i had flashed a ROM without realising i had the 4G model.
Noob Mistake but appreciate your input. Lesson learned. Never assume.

MAJOR HELP needed ASAP PLEASE

I got my new galaxy note N7105 today and first thing i did was root it.
i then like an idiot went and downloaded and installed a N7100 rom, which seemed to of worked but left me with no reception.
i was told to simply install a N7105 rom and it should all be sorted, WRONG!!!
i've still got no reception, in settings, its saying....
NETWORK - unknown
MOBILE NETWORK TYPE - unknown
SERVICE STATE - out of service
IMEI - unknown
IP ADDRESS - unavailable.
someone please tell me there is a way to fix this?
i only got my note 2 today, i cant believe what i have done
and NO i didnt do any backup of anything before installing the N7100 rom because i didnt believe there was anything at the time that i needed to back up.
Im worrying like mad here, I have £10 left in my paypal account which i'll transfer to whoever can help me get this sorted.
I really need this sorted before i go sleep tonight.
You could try to install the stock Rom and give a try once that is kind of last resort.

Well to start all ways make a back up every time you do something wrong like now. Now I do believe your kinda hooped because from what it looks like you have wiped your imei from your phone and that can't be flashed from any stock rom. From what I have read around here is that you need to send it back.

Agreed that stock Rom may not restore IMEI but i've read on XDA couple of replies that has bought the device back to life so we could give this as a last resort before we send in the device to Paid Service .

Problem with modem/not registered in network

Hey guys!
The idea is that ,by mistake i flashed a s4 modem on my note2 (my wifi was not working and i thought the problem is the modem and i found another modem but i didn't pay attention to the title).
Now my note 2 says that it isn't registered in network
I tried flashing a modem but no succes. Wifi is now working( i installed another rom -allianceRom) and i tried to go to settings-mobile data-network operator(last option .don't know how to translate) and register manually in a network but that was unsuccesful again...
I mention that my phone is from Romania and the network was COSMOTE
I don't have any efs backup as well..don't know where are them. I remember i saw 3 of them in a folder when surfing trough storage but i can't find them now...
What can i do ? I need my phone
