I cannot find a definitive answer: Does the 2013 N7 support connecting to Wi-Fi Ad-Hoc networks? I do not have a router, but I do have a wireless card in my PC which I am using to broadcast a Wi-Fi Ad-Hoc network. The N7 sees the network, but is unable to connect. I have tried disabling all security on the Ad-Hoc network (no password), but it still does not connect.
Has anyone figured out how to get this working?

also wondering if it supports it, I cant even see ad-hoc. Might be something that we can mod onto the stock rom
Not supported. There is an ancient bug report for that:

Do you have a particular reason to use ad-hoc mode? The N7 can play access point just fine; your PC most likely as well.
There is this mod if you really need, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163363, I personally think Google should add native support, is really not that hard, especially for Google

My neighbour gave me access, he is 100 meters away. My laptop has a real teck card with outside antenna and I rebroadcast the signal to my nexus 7 with connectify.
It works....
My home internet went out a couple weeks back and I used ad-hoc on DJLamontagneIII's CM10.2 Flo Kangs rom. It was a build from a couple weeks ago, but I'm sure it's fine on the new one.
There were no tricks, ad-hoc just showed up under Wi-Fi connections and I connected.

I do wireless tether from my lg optimus g to my tablet just fine. If I recall WiFi tether creates it using ad hoc, not infrastructure (unless you have a rare phone that supports it). It works just fine.

The Nexus 7 doesn't connect to adhoc connection unless. It connects only to infrustructure networks and this is with some other android devices. Rooted devices have a way of going around this though.
did anyone have a solution for the nexus 7 (2013)?. I cant find anything helpful at all regarding this.

I just flashed CM-FLO 4.3.1 and it doesn't work. The tablet is able to see the Ad-Hoc network I created with my Nokia E-72 (yes, I know it's old but it's my work phone).
It sees the network. I click on it and connect (network is open; no wep). It then says that it saved the connection but if I click on it again for it to connect it doesn't.
I've tested this with 2 different iPhone's and they are able to connect successfully and browse while connected to my Ad-Hoc. I verified connectivity because the mb up and down counter shows data traffic. I thought CyanogenMod would have it enabled by default. I guess not.

I have the same issue... I'm considering connecting my netbook with an ethernet cable and using the wifi to connect to my phone.
I haven't seen anyone successfully use ICS on Windows 7 to reverse tether to an Android phone through USB. (we use Windows 7 at work)
I think you need to enable RNDIS in kernel, for example to compile it as module.
Ive used connectify while i was on vacation.
You can turn your wifi adapter into a hotspot and put a password on it so you can connect your phone to your laptop while your laptop is connected to another wireless network (get it ?)

i think the solution is to add ad-hoc support
I think the default wpa-supplicant doesn't support adhoc. We need to replace it with one that supports. I don't know if someone has made/fixed it yet. Still waiting for it as well.

Did some search in Google and previous NEXUS had the same problem some users were telling to change wpa_supplicant in /system/bin but I think the one they where providing its not compatible with SGN.
As someone already said, I am not even able to see the an adhoc wifi network with my Galaxy Nexus.
My device is rooted but so far I did not find an easy solution to enable adhoc wifi.
However the same adhoc network works perfectly with an EEEpad transformer, so apparently the wifi client is already modified in the Asus tablet.
Has there been any update to this? Been searching this site and others and it doesn't seem like a wpa-supplicant file that can see Ad-hoc networks has been created yet.
I use Connectify - works pefectly.
Supposedly the 4.0.2 update should bring ad-hoc support.
I'm eagerly awaiting the roll-out... (Should have happened ages ago, but somehow it's taking quite a while to propagate everywhere.)
I suppose you could always go ahead and flash your own ROM, but personally I prefer to wait for the official OTA update.
I'm using a 4.0.3 ROM and before that had stock 4.0.2 and no ad hoc support was/is available. There is Wifi Direct which acts like ad hoc but that only works with other Wifi Direct devices.

Oh, Bother!
I was betting on 4.0.2 to solve this, but as you say, it appears that it's only the wifi-direct that frequently gets billed as 'ad-hoc-like' connection.
Is there any other way to enable ad-hoc connections?
Apparently on other devices there exist modified wpa_supplicant files that enable ad-hoc, but so far I haven't seen anything for the GN.

Unfortunately no bluetooth on my laptop either...double yeah I know ;-) It really is a POS!
I found the application Wifi Ad Hoc Enabler on the market, it require Root and it works grate for me, now i can see and connect to any ad hoc connection.
I have an old Windows Mobile 6.5 phone (Touch Pro 2). I have an app that allows it to run as a wifi hotspot (install file is called mobilewifirouter.cab).
Other devices connect to the hotspot fine, but the kindle just doesn't see it... even when they're right next to each other. Otherwise the kindle wifi works ok.
Is there any way I can get this going? It's tedious having to constantly consider wifi availability when I'm travelling with it. Maybe the KF doesn't see anything using a very old 802.11 standard?
ad-hoc vs infrastructure
I think the issue is the phone itself. Or rather, the chip/radio only being able to broadcast on ad-hoc which the KF (and other new 'droid devices) doesn't support. I used the same wifi manager you did, same results...

I'm trying to have my lg p500 (android 2.2.1) working as a wifi hotspot and access it from my galaxy tab (3.2) but I can't never "see" my network from it.
Other devices (laptop, nokia E71) can connect, but not the galaxy tab.
Galaxy tab can connect to other wifi networks, but not the one I create in my phone with "Wifi Thether" app.
Any workaround to fix this?

I think WM6.5 wifi router software uses Adhoc mode for wifi rather than infrastructure mode. Android cannot connect to adhoc wifi network unless you have a modified WPA supplicant file (which can make your android device unstable).
Kindle Fire and many smartphones/tables cannot connect to the internet via ad-hoc.
Use Connectify software to create a access point from your laptop.
It's a problem that is corrected easily, all you need is ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher. It works, VERY well.

If you are on Stock ROM and rooted, this is perfect
But, if you are on a CM9 ROM(unsure about others), there is no ad-hoc support yet...

He didn't really say if he was using stock or not. I just posted what I know works. If it is wrong for him/her, then I am wrong!
I tried the app on CM9 ROM's, it doesn't play friendly...
For anyone else who searched this thread and they're trying to connect to an android phone... just wanted to recommend FoxFi. I tried several other apps and they all failed (probably due to some quirk of the Kindle Fire's, everyone's recommending these apps). But FoxFi got the job done. But only if you run it without a password. If you're fed up trying to make the kindle connect to your phone, try it.

the problem here is that KF running CM9 or CM10 cant connect to an adhoc wifi yet, not the problem of the phone.
I am having a problem tethering my laptop and my desktop computer to my Galaxy Nexus ever since I installed the 4.2 update. My Nexus 7 tablet does not seem to have any issues connecting.
My laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad T60-2007 which has an Atheros 42T0825 wifi chip. It used to connect to the Android 4.1 Galaxy Nexus hotspot without any problems under Win XP. Immediately following upgrading the Galaxy Nexus to Android 4.2 the laptop had problems. The laptop would connect to the tethering wifi hotspot, but would not be able to browse the internet (or in a few rare circumstances, would browse extremely slowly with frequent errors that would prevent web pages from loading).
I tried a factory reset on the Galaxy Nexus (which still left the phone at android 4.2), and there was no change in behavior.
I tried removing the wifi password and running the hotspot as an 'open network' and there was no change in behavior.
I tried a Windows XP reinstall on the laptop (to Windows XP SP3) and there was no change in behavior.
I replaced the wifi card (with and identical model) and there was no change in behavior
As a last resort (and because the laptop needed it), I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on a new SSD and put in additional 2 GB of RAM.
Now although the laptop can still see the hotspot, it cannot connect to it. Even though the correct password is typed at the prompt, it gives a 'Network Security Key mismatch' error and will not connect. The laptop can connect to the hotspot if it is set as 'open', but will not connect to any sites or web pages (i.e. same problem as before with Win XP).
The laptop *does* work with the Galaxy Nexus via USB tethering, which suggests that there is some kind of wifi issue, but the laptop connects to my home wifi network (Linksys E3000 running stock firmware) just fine.

i am also facing the same problem when i try to connect to any wi-fi network. it stucks on obtaining ip address. even though the password is correct. even i tried hotspot way to connect. via different s/w like connectify even i tried to make hotspot via cmd shell commands too. in that same it is not able to connect.
i dont know what the problem. i am currently using 4.2.1 rooted JB. i am planning for factory reset. but as you did earlier and no success so i might not do.

The inability to either create a mobile hotspot and connect to it is why I went back to stock rooted 4.1.1. I have tried Muzzy and AOKP and could not create and connect to a hotspot using native tethering or Wifi Tether. It has been a while since I checked the forums, but did not see a solution that helped me
PS - I was trying to tether mobile devices not laptops though
My issue resolved on its own...!! Don't know how..!! but now I can use WiFi tether and also reverse tethering too..!! Reverse tethering is really too handy thanks to xda members for making awesome apps.

I have not been able to get any form of wifi AP to work since flashing over to 10.1 CM. it turns on the AP and I can get wifi to link but can't get an IP and any kind of connectivity to the internet... so far, I haven't been able to find any help for the issue but I'll keep reading!

I am looking for help to resolve basically the only issue I have not been able to figure out through these great forums or otherwise.
It seems that getting the tablet to work with an AdHoc network is not yet possible. I have seen comments stating that it may be possible through CyanogenMod. Can anybody confirm this? Or has another way been discovered to allow us to connect to AdHoc wifi networks?
Otherwise, does anybody know how to get ALL apps to recognize the Bluetooth internet connection? I have a Verizon phone running FoxFi and I am thethering via PdaNet Tablet when using Bluetooth; using FoxFi and stock wifi connection for wifi. Some apps will recognize the internet connection while others will not. Is there some way to point all apps to the Bluetooth internet connection?

you need to recompile the kernel to add ibss to the wifi driver and recompile wpa_supplicant to recognize ad-hoc.
If you don't want to do this, most versions of aokp/cm will have it working.
if you are using foxfi, you shouldn't need to worry about ad-hoc

I may be falsely assuming that it is an ad-hoc issue just due to what I have read from others commenting on the issue (re: your comment about FoxFi).
I am going to start by trying one of the more recent CM nightly releases (cm-10.2-20131105-NIGHTLY-flo) and do a little research to see what is involved in recompiling the kernel to add ibss to the wifi driver and recompile wpa_supplicant to recognize ad-hoc and respond back.

Does Pdanet create a connection as a VPN or actual bluetooth tethering? If it's the former, there's the reason. I'm under the impression that apps will be able to properly understand a bluetooth internet connection (via bluetooth PAN I believe)

When I tested FoxFi it acted as a regular Access Point so normal wifi was all that was needed to connect.
Usually it is the WiFi Tether for Root app that sets of the phone as an ad-hoc connection, forcing the tablets connecting to it to also have ad-hoc support.

I truly don't know the answer to this. Can you provide some instructions on testing this theory? I have tried the app Bluetooth Auto Connect and set the connection up with the phone as a PAN connection. I can pair the phone and my n7 together, but the stock Bluetooth manager never shows the two as 'Connected' versus other Bluetooth devices. Any suggestions?

Then I think it must be a limitation with the LG VS660 phone that I'm using.
The good news is that the installation of CyanogenMod worked! What would have been intermittent connectivity every 5 minutes or so has now been turned into a solid wifi connection. Apps that would have rarely worked on the wifi connection are now working with no problems.
However, I am still very interested in figuring out the Bluetooth connectivity option. For those who may not want / like to go the CM route, it would be nice to have a simpler solution. Plus, my wife has a stock 2012 n7 and I would like to be able to get hers connected without rooting it. Any input on how to accomplish this would be great!
