Hi folks, so yesterday I flashed this awesome rom beanstalk 4,3 but made the mistake of not backing up the data from the internal memory such as dcim folder and other folders I had in the root of the drive. Since I had done the same before when installing 4.2 I thought it wouldn't be a problem, lo and behold I cant find my folders anywhere anymore, but I know that my data is there because when I go to storage it shows that I have 2 gig free under my internal memory and there is no other data on the phone- pictures or otherwise to be found. I was able to recover most of my pictures and videos by using diskdigger (awesome app) under diskdigger my data is here /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/userdata showing the full 12 gigs of my device. Is there any way to mount this and then copy my data from there? I have tried finding my lost folders there by using root browser but there is nothing to be found, please help kind people of XDA. Thank you.
From your root browser try going to /storage/sdcard0/

under sdcard0 there is only the files and folders that beanstalk created, I was on dandroid 4.6 which is 4.1.2 I believe. Those folders and files that I had under that install are the ones missing and are nowhere to be found. The reason I suspect that they are there is because under storage there is only a small amount of data that the system actually created. I have attached a picture that will hopefully explain it better. My phone is a T999 by the way. Thank you for your help.
Update!!! I installed CWM recovery and when I select install zip/ choose zip from sdcard I can see that all my folders and hopefully files are there...any ideas on how to mount this on windows or even on android so I can copy it into the external sdcard. On the bottom it says /storage/sdcard1: Mounted....anyone? Please help. Thank you.
Solved CWM recovery did the trick in my attempt to back up the data through CWM it made a recovery zip instead under mnt/shell/emulated when I went to delete this zip I found all my folders and files. Before there was nothing in that folder I guess that CWM gave it rights to be read...go figure????

I just updated from cyanogenmod 10 (stable) to 10.1 M2 using goomanager to flash the rom and the 20130301 gapps (didn't set it to make backup or wipe anything). Phone seems to be running everything fine but my storage space is wrong. It shows 2.17 available, 2.20 for Apps, 2.23 for picture and video an negligible everything else. Total space 13.33. Using an app called "Storage Analyser" I can see that in /data/media I have 9.3GB and it has all the old info in it from CM10 as well as the new info in the new "0" folder (which will include the 2.2GB picture and video data above) and 4.85GB in a folder called ".dumpster".
So, I guess the questions are:
did I do something wrong when updating the app that it kept all this old information? When I updated from stock to CM10 it put all the old info into a folder called "0" I think, but I could see that in normal file explorers/windows and delete it easily. Not the case here - I had to go into root mode etc to see the files.
can I / should I be deleting every folder in data/media except for the "0" folder? If not, what should I be doing?
Appreciate any help. Would like to avoid messing my phone up by deleting things I shouldn't and also don't want to have to full wipe and reinstall CM10.1 just to get arround this issue
/data/media should have three folders in it once you're on Android 4.2: 0, legacy, and obb. The "0" folder is what, after fuse mounts and symlinks, ends up as /sdcard and read by Windows via MTP. That's why you couldn't see the other files in /data/media on Windows.
If all of your data is in /data/media/0, then anything other than the three folders listed above can be deleted from /data/media. If you're unsure, don't hesitate to transfer the files to your PC as a failsafe backup (zip, move to /data/media/0, and copy it off via MTP; adb pull it; etc) before deleting.
Hey all,
Was bored and needed to update my phone with a new rom so I did some scouting about and found Beanstalk. Now this rom is awesome but previously I was on CleanRom which is also an awesome rom.
When changing from Clean to Bean I used TWRP and wiped Cache, Dalvik and Factory reset. I never wiped system (I know I should have).
Now after doing so, I lost all data files (images, videos, music, etc). I would like to retrieve those. Upon looking through the root directory, I could not find them.
So, any ideas? I'm stumped but I am not giving up. Storage details says I have 10gb, available 2.5gb+. Now where did the 7gb+ go? Also my 6gb for my system as it is a 16gb N7105.
If more info is needed just ask. List all you need to know. I am gunna do some other things that does not involve wiping the device.
If you open up explorer and check the internal sd. You should be able to see a file labelled "0" check in that folder.

Factory reset doesn't wipes internal memory.
Maybe twrp setting was set to /media(not sure which folder it is) directory for internal memory so it wiped the internal memory too

There's plenty of apps on playstore that can do a full search for internal memory and show the largest files. I think a good one would be Memory Maid.

Hello all
Thanks for the feedback.
So what I have done is flashed a new kernel and recovery which is called Devil. I got this for the dual boot feature and within flashing a rom as I noticed a folder called legacy. This folder contains my previous content. All music folders etc.
So I rebooted went onto a few root explorers and could not find it!
I've enabled root and show hidden files and folders. Went to the root of the phone and checked each folder and all folders within and still cant find it.
Recovery shows: /sdcard/0/legacy - Old
Root explorer: /sdcard - New
Root also has another folder storage, with 4 folders; emulated, sdcard0, sdcard1, usbdisk0.
Emulated has 2 folders; 0 and legacy. Both display the new files.
Sdcard0 shows new files.
Sdcard1 shows microSD(Need more disk space for roms)
Usbdisk0 has no files.
This is a mind game. I think the rom created a new system within the old system files and it can't access out but the recovery can.
I have tried mounting the phone to the Pc via recovery but it won't pick up.

Hello all,
Thanks again for the support!
I resolved the issue. The issue was, AOKP based roms create a new file system for the System. It created it within /sdcard/0/legacy.
When I flashed a Sammy based rom and checked the file manager I was able to see all.
So for all who are coming from Sammy to AOKP, please be careful and back up all SDCard contents, regardless if advised it will not affect Internal storage. This is the first time this has happened since G1 days.

I think so becuase I've recently installed the CM on my device, did a factory reset with the CWM recovery but both the internal and external memory (SD) wheren't touched at all, all the files and folders remains where they was.
So it's normal, right?
Yes mate.. when doing the 3 wipes it doesn't touch internal storage. Its only when you wipe either internal storage or /sdcard.
I had to format my sdcard and wipe all data after I transfered it to the PC. This fixed the file system issue but changing from aokp to sammy will do it again and again. Bit annoying. But hey, its always good doing a clean up.
All i had on my phone were a load of pics and vids by camera and 3 albums. All of this would take no more than 2gb.
Camera was 600mb. So where did 5gb go to? So there is a lot of crap from rom changing, ALOT.

Hi All,
Hopefully this should be a very quick question. I'm loading CM onto my phone, and this is the first ROM I've ever used. I've loaded CWM, made a backup, and I'm about ready to go and load CW on. I've noticed though that out of the 5 or so gig the phone comes with for internal memory, about 4gb is used up. Is this just the system and the back up and apps?? It seems quite a lot. Will CM fill this up further? Will I encounter any issues?
I hope thats all clear, but excuse me for being a beginner.
EDIT: This is now even more relevant now CM is flashed. I've just looked in the file viewer, and there's still all the folders etc from the old samsung, and amazonmp3 etc etc. I thought the "wipe data/factory reset" in CWM would have cleared all this.....
Many thanks for looking.

Factory reset only wipes the data partition. For the first time installing a custom ROM, and especially going from stock to cm for the first time, you should wipe the system partition which can be done from cwm.

Hi again.
So I finally got round to trying to get this sorted.... and I'm failing. I've booted into CWM, rerun the "wipe/data factory reset", rerun the "wipe cache" then went into "mounts and storage" and did a format of the system partition, but it still hasn't cleared any of the data.
Am I doing something incorrectly? I didn't want to play around with it too much, in case i bork it all. Any help would be massively appreciated.
Also, I'm a bit concerned about what formatting the system partition will do. Does it just clear the rom already on there, and I can then flash Cyanogenmod back on from my sd card?
Thanks

Formatting system partition wipes the currently installed rom / system apps.
How do you know that it is not wiping the data? If you do a system format and your rom still boots then it isn't working properly.
It could be a problem with the version of recovery (cwm / twrp) that you're using. It can't hurt to update it, which could be the case here.
Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

So if you see the attached, this is what I'm looking at. The phone has 5.5gb internal memory, of which, looking at the below, I'm using about 1.5gb, BUT I only have 1gb left to use, and I get warnings about lack of memory.... So there's 3gb being used for.... I don't know.
When I first put cyanogen on, I noticed that the file structure from stock was still there (i.e. all the folder my old apps made). I expected when I put CM on that it would wipe everything, including all of those folders.
You can try an app called es file explorer, it has a feature that fully scans the contents of the internal SD card.
It should show a list of all the folders from the old stock data folders. You can multi select and delete what you want.
Another option which is more efficient, is to make a full backup of all the internal data in your PC. Then fully format the internal SD card via cwm and transfer which contents you need back from the PC such as photos and music. Asides from photos, music and other media items, most of those internal SD contents aren't needed as Android uses these folders for app data etc.
Always make back ups.
Your welcome.

Yeah, I have got ES File explorer. I couldn't find a "scan" but I've gone through all the folder on my device and I can see the following:
/storage - 3.83gb
/mnt - 2.11gb
/sdcard - 893mb
A lot of this seems to be duplicated though.... The stuff on mnt seems to be a shortcut to whats in sdcard, and all that in storage seems to be in the other two. I don't technically think it's all duplicated, but different ways to get to the same stuff, which makes me very nervous about deleting any of it....
Just got a liitle program to give a break down. See attached.
Surely my system data shouldn't be that big?
I recommend you make a full back up in your PC and format the SD card and transfer the contents of your current SD folder back. I've done it before on different devices, I do it on first root / cm install coming from stock because of all the old obsolete data. Apps like clean master won't removing it because it's marked as important for stock users. It shouldn't be a problem.
Note:
Having different links to the data partition is normal. It's purpose is compatibility.

It's possible that's reserved for the system. Mine is similar. You can still use it if you convert user apps into system ones.

Massively appreciate your time and repsonses on this iKlutz. Just out of interest, did you do a backup when you installed a rom? Have you found that the backup is this big??
Use ES file explorer or other file manager with root explorer capabilities.
Go to /data/media
You should see:
0
clockworkmod
legacy
obb
In clockworkmod folder I've found a backup (2.0GB) that was made by mistake to internal sotrage, since I allways do backup in CWM Recovery to external SD.
Deleted and 2.0GB were gained.

Do not delete.
Copy the folder(s) that you have in the "backup" to the external SD card to the "backup" folder in the "clockworkmod" folder.
Then, you can delete the backup folder located in "data/media/clockworkmod/".
I allways save the backup of the stock ROM's.
To restore in CWM recovery, simply choose "restore from external SD card". And to backup, choose "backup to external SD card", or it will backup to the internal memory.

No.... I don't really know what to do with it.
I've got an s3 mini with Cyanogen and CWM and the system data portion is only 54mb.
I might go into CWM and start deleting things. If I delete the backup I made of my stock phone when I first rooted and added CWM, I can't see too many issues.... I can always flash a stock ROM again can't I?

Next time do the backups in CWM to the external SD card!
Hi,
I flashed last night Temasek's CM11 4.4.2 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2596887), wiping user data, caches, etc (I was on a rooted stock 4.1.2 ROM).
Everything is working great so far, I love this ROM, I just noticed a problem that it's quite annoying: it seems that the internal user data file system (which would be the /sdcard folder in my old ROM) is all messed up and replicated. Here;s what happens:
I created a backup of the current ROM with Online Nandroid backup. If I use a file explorer from my phone (X-plore) and go to the "partition" /storage/emulated/0 I can see the backup created in /storage/emulated/0/clockworkmod/backup/.
However, if I connect the phone to my PC and browse the contents, the partition that I see isn't that same partition, it's an older one with older files (for example it has a clockworkmod folder but the backup isn't there, and some folders are different). What;s worse is that I can't find this "old" partition when browsing my phone with X-plore. These are the palces where I've looked at:
- /storage/emulated/0 (shows the partition where the backup I just created went, I can see the backup there)
- With root privileges:
- /data/media (shows an older second partition with different folders)
- /data/media/0 (shows the "right" partition, where the backup is)
- /sdcard (again, shows the "right" partition)
- /storage/sdcard0 (same here, shows the "right" one)
So to sum up, it looks like I see at least 3 diffent partitions:
1. From my PC, I see an older one that I can't see from X-plore (I tried Cyanogenmod file explorer too)
2. From my phone, I see the one that has the backup I just created
3. From my phone too, I see a second old partition (different from the one I see from my PC)
So what I would like to know is:
1. How can I transfer the backup to my PC if I can't see the partition that holds it from there?
2. Is it safe to just delete all those folders in both old partitions? I'm sure they're taking space unnecessarily
Any help would be much appreciated!

Hey! So it seems that did it!!! Now I can see ALL the contents in the /sdcard partition (X-plore shows it as /storage/emulated/0)
So my question is (I'm still pretty noob at all this): all the files/folders shown there shouldn't be critical for the OS to work, right? They should all be stuff saved by apps, that if they get deleted the worst thing that will happen is that those apps will lose that info, right? I ask because I can recognize most of them, but not all of them, so I'm not sure, and I would like to remove as much stuff as possible.
One file that makes me doubt specially is /sdcard/clockworkmod/download/download2.clokworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-t0lteatt.img. Is that the actual CWM recovery that I have in my phone? Or just the installation image that can be removed?
Thank you very much for your help!
I ended up deleting everything from the sdcard partition and restoring the stuff that mattered to me, and everything seems fine now. The only weird thing is that when I create a backup with Online Nandroid backup (which gets stored in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backups), I can't see it when connecting my phone to my PC. I can see everything else in the sdcard except the backup. I've tried unplugging and plugin again the phone, rebooting it, rebooting my PC... but nothing. However, if I zip the backup folder with X-plore, leaving the zip file in the same folder as the backup folder, my PC can see it...
Weird thing but oh well!
My phone was on stock ROM. Installed FreeGee and used CWM to make a backup and flash a 5.1 ROM.
Appeared to be successful but I noticed that the files on my internal storage were gone when checking using File Manager. Tried ES File Explorer and set to show hidden files but still cant find them at /storage/emulated which appeared to be the new directory of internal storage for 5.1.
But checking free space from Settings>Storage shows that the files should still be somewhere in my phone. So I tried to reboot into recovery and from there I can see the files at /storage/sdcard0. On the other hand, from recovery mode I can't find the files located at /storage/emulated which is where my newly downloaded gapps zip went after downloading it using the 5.1 ROM.
I can't figure out what to do so I decided to flash back to stock ROM using my backup. I was able to do so and I can see my files now again at /storage/sdcard0. But I decided to try to flash a custom ROM again and used TWRP App to install recovery. I tried to reboot and my phone went stuck with message "LG E985 Optimus Pro Secure Booting Error! Cause: boot certification verify". Did some research and used LG Flash Tools to flash the stock KDZ. Phone is running again now but my files are still missing from internal storage.
I used ES File Explorer and see the following directories:
storage/emulated/0 - contains some files after I flash the stock ROM again - newly taken pictures, videos, and downloaded files - 124.86 MB
storage/sdcard0 - appears to be now a shortcut directory pointing to the same contents of storage/emulated/0 - 124.86 MB
external_SD - contains files from my micro SD
Settings>Storage shows Im using more than 8 GB space so I'm pretty sure my old files are still in the internal storage. I suspect this has something to do with storage/sdcard0 now pointing to storage/emulated/0 instead of going to where my previous internal storage files was. I want to recover the files from my internal storage. Any fix for this? Run out of ideas and decided to post here. Thanks!

I was using the stock 4.1 E980 then used CWM by FreeGee to flash 5.1 SlimLP (thanks for the rom btw ).
Everything seems fine except 2 things: I lost access to "storage/sdcard0". Files that I download while using the 5.1 ROM are being put to "storage/emulated/0" instead; and a WiFI access point that I can see while using 4.1 is no longer available while using 5.1
I have a couple of soft bricks and flashing afterwards . 4.1 to 5.1 and returned to 4.1. Tried to flash TWRP recovery instead and got a soft brick which I assume was due to bootloader still being locked. Did some more flash. Able to flash stock 4.4 KDZ and from there, restored my backup of stock 4.1. From there, I can see again the contents of "storage/sdcard0" but then I cant find the files I downloaded while using 5.1 stored on "storage/emulated/0".
I backup the contents of my internal storage while using 4.1 and flashed again the 5.1 SlimLP. I regain access to "storage/emulated/0"" and lost access to contents of "storage/sdcard0" in return. Can't really figure out the exact cause of this.
Directory symlinks differ between android versions; 4.4 onwards expects everything to be under /storage/emulated/0 (which is symlinked to /storage/sdcard0/0 or something like that), while 4.1 expects stuff to be under /storage/sdcard0 or /storage/sdcard, on some ROMs even under /mnt/sdcard or directly in /sdcard. Everything on your internal is there, just 4.4+ ROMs think that your internal memory is fixed in /storage/emulated/0... I know, mess. Had same dillema first time I've flashed mine 3yrs ago, took me some time to understand where the heck my files went
I think that all ROMs have common /sdcard symlink, check that one. It should contain all your data. If there isn't anything under /sdcard, snoop around /data.. Everything you saved while on lollipop should be under '0' folder somewhere (/data/media perhaps? just a blind guess).

Many thanks. Found my lost data in a directory in Storage folder using Root explorer.
