[Q] any roms that support S Pen? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I read that most 4.1.2 roms support S Pen. Are there any for 4.2 or 4.3?
What else would I be losing if I were to use the roms instead of touchwhiz?
Using N7105
Thanks!

you lose all the samsung based stuff because it requires their framework. you can still use the S pen to draw though. I think there is an app for non samsung bases roms that gives it more functionality though. i believe it's called gmd s pen or something like that.

There's also Note Buddy which is very good

What you loose out on, can be made back up with third party apps from market

What are the third party apps you mentioned?

Try miui custom rom. It's based on touch wiz and spen works fine there
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 4

I was using tw based roms such as AR HD just for the sake of SPen, now I'm using CM with an app called "Handy Notes Pro" and it does great job with spen. And the funny thing is it doesn't even has s-lag !! Dont be scared to try different roms, just do a backup through recovery so if you dont like your new rom you can go just back to beginning. Cheers!

I like the MyScript Stylus handwriting recognition much better than the original one. GMD SPen Control works flawlessly too. For note taking I like FiiNote. For me no need for touchwiz based roms any more.

One finger zoom feature? ...Grrrrr...

I brought this up as a response in the bugs/fixes thread in General, but thought it deserved its own thread here. I'd like to know if this is a TW "feature" or something else that Sammy or T-Mo has baked into the ROM...
On a zoomable page, such as in a browser or in an email, if you swipe up/down along the left or right edge of the screen it zooms in/out as if using a pinch gesture. It gets really (really really really) annoying to have to be so careful of WHERE my finger is on the screen when I want to scroll and to not end up zooming. Are others being driven crazy by this?
I already spent time with Samsung Support to see if there was a way to toggle the "feature" and they told me I was SOL . I put in a feature request with them to add a toggle FWIW.
(this is on a stock, unrooted T-Mo GN2)
This may or may not be helpful, but regarding Google Maps.. Which you may or may not be using while driving: they recently added a double tap hold, slide up and down to zoom. I'd love that feature to be implemented into browser and others with pinch to zoom, but that's gonna be up to the developers.

I had this issue too. I flashed a different ROM (the hacked ROM by cnmard (forget his username) ) in the development section and it doesn't seem to have this "feature." You can flash the ROM or ask in the thread how to turn it off. But it seems you'll need root regardless....
I was wondering why ive never had this accidental zoom...then I realized I have been using a 3rd party browser all along.. doesnt have this feature

I found the feature to be active on both stock and Dolphin browsers. Haven't tried any other ones yet. Which 3rd party browser are you using?

I've been trying to keep the GN2 unrooted (company mobile device policy), but this issue may force me to temporarily root to apply a fix if any dev can provide one that doesn't require a full ROM flash.

Questions on rooting

Will the s-pen features like pop-up note, and being able to write a note on the back of the picture be erased when I root my note 2? Or is there a rom specifically made for the note 2?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Almost all of the s pen features will lost however samsung still release S pen SDK so we can get s pen apps via root and custom roms and also gestures will work using GSD s pen gestures in google play u can use papyrus and google keep instead of S note and so on...
Peraonally, I am not rooted in fear of my S pen and multi Window But I will in upcoming 3 years.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using XDA Premium HD app
You will not loose anything by rooting alone, least of all the pen functionality. If you choose to flash a non Samsung based rom (e.g. Cyanogenmod or AOKP) then yes you will loose a lot of the pen functionality.
Rooting and flashing are not the same thing, don't be fooled.

You are wrong. Rooting alone wouldn't harm s pen functionality as already said. Check you facts.

Galaxy SIII has become slow..

So my Galaxy S3 has become slow over time. I noticed about a few weeks ago how my keyboard simply got deleted and dissapeard of my device.. so I had to go into the google store to download another one - not sure if this is even related to my slowness.
However, I have found the device has become slow. It simple takes a while to load APPS, even when typing and just doing other tasks. I've actually disabled the stuff under developer options that I have found on this forum but it made minimal differences. Also I close out all my APPS using the task manager.
I am not rooted and running stock rom. Currently it has 4.1.2 running. If I were to root the device, can I;
1) Backup my stuff beforehand so when I return I can get my game progress etc. back?
2) Will rooting it make a difference?
Thanks in advance.
You will have to buy titanium backup, but worth every penny.
And yes rooting makes a vast difference in speed, stability, and just about everything else.

Thanks for the reply.
I did some research and apparently the Carbon Backup APP from the playstore is able to do backups without having root access. So I was actually able to back up my phone with that I guess..
Now, what would you recommend installing once its rooted? What rom?
Its a matter of preference. You have 3 choices. Aosp, touchwiz, or miui. After that it's just preference. All aosp is more or less the same. Same goes for tw. Just different settings or features in each version

Is touchwiz the one that comes stock on the Galaxy S3?
Yes. But there are different uhh... "Flavors" of touchwiz
Sent from my SGH-T999 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Specifically for #2, yes rooting can making a huge difference.
Generally there are either TouchWiz (Name of Samsung's "skin" atop Android on the S3) roms that have huge amounts of customization like Hyperdrive or a debloated and "lighter" rom for better battery life, less lag, etc. On the other side, AOSP or stock Android can come in many different forms, 100% bone stock, All-in-One Roms like PAC, or simpler roms like CM 10.2 or AOKP. I prefer AOSP based roms a lot more than the TouchWiz roms because they generally seem very snappy and give me more internal space too!
AOSP Roms I Recommend:
Bam Rom (not on XDA) http://get.bam-android.com/
Task 650's AOKP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684
Best one IMO: Quantum by pwncakes http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2390147
Hope this helps!
I use the S3Rx rom myself and really enjoy it. It is touchwiz baised and is silky smooth. I also put it on my wife's S3 and she has not had any problems. Cheers.

TouchWiz miui

I started a project on my old htc 3d EVO and have been thinking about doing a version for the note 2.
The basis of the project will be to merge more of touchwiz back into miui. Since some versions of miui are built on top of touchwiz then adding back in most of the functions are easy sort of. I personally don't like the miui launcher at all but the rest of the ROM I like. The touchwiz launcher/functions are pretty nice for my taste.
Anyone interested in helping/using something of this nature?

Starting work on the project tomorrow after work. I believe the latest miui release for the att note 2 is touchwiz. I will start it as a port to ours then play with adding in the TW launcher and features. The goal is to have as much TW (dialer for ## codes) as possible only keeping the settings and status bar from miui.

Alright guys this is where I sit on this project. I have been using Team Noobs 3.1.11 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063126 as a base and JellyBomb Domination for the TouchWiz parts http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957773 , for now although if I continue to use it I will ask for there permission before anything goes public. I will be playing with it for the next few hours and then see if I can get something out for a SELECT FEW TESTERS. I have a couple already lined up and if anyone else wants PM me. I want testers who have the Sprint Note 2 (although if you are flashed to another provider thats fine also). Being able to provide logcats and have active service is also required. Thanks for the interest and help in getting this going.
Okay I have been working on this and so far I got touchwiz and a few other things working. When I try adding everything I lose service so I am going to showly add things back in.

Building test Rom now. What I have right now will be the unmodified aroma installer from the MIUI I am using us the base. Touch wiz Iauncher works along with a few apps. Testers will be getting a link in the next few hours.

Well I have gotten 11-8 from the Verizon note 2 running so I have a newer base to build from. Once I get this running on the old sprint base I will see about upgrading it.

I am still looking for a few testers. I have my first beta uploaded for testing but it is only available if you PM me requesting the link.
I'm up for testing
Info for my testers.
1. At the end of install uncheck the reboot option or installer will freeze requiring a battery pull
2. phone.apk will force close a few times then will work properly
3. the data toggle does not work
4. If you have no data do *#*#4636#*#* and change wcdma to CDMA(prl) or LTE.

Why would you even want aosp on this phone? Stock (+xposed) is sssoo much better than any custom Rom is...especially as far as stability is concerned. You lose so man features when on aosp...just to say your on a custom Rom.

with cm i can run the full fledged google now with it right on the left hand side of the homescreens, also have voice activated ok google from the homescreen. these are features i use often. the only thing i truly enjoyed from stock lg was the built in wireless storage, however i have an app that does the same thing and actually speeds seem to be better than the lg for transfers. Everyone has their flavors, hence why both are offered by developers.
EDIT: also my google play all access music works flawlessly on aosp, where on stock lg 4.4.2 it shuts off after a few songs.
