mic doesnt work but headphones do - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Suddenly the mic stopped working during calls and when
I play music. Although when I use headphones it works fine.
Why is that? It didnt fall and I did root the phone a week ago
But I didnt change anything so it still on stock rom.
* the mic is fine because when someone calls me it sounds the ringtone.

Can you clarify please? Are you talking about the Mic where you speak into, or the speaker?

Im sorry, I meant to the speaker

Speaker may have a loose connection, or something else may have gone wrong hardware-wise. The ringer plays through the rear speakerphone speaker. And obviously headphones are connected thru the Jack, none of which should have any effect on or be affected by the earpiece you listen to on calls.
You can try Odin flashing stock, but it sounds like it's a component problem.

I can't answer such a generic question without more information. First, I'm going to assume you mean the earpiece, not the external. Next, I'm going to assume it's STOCK EC05 rooted. So based on that assumption, you likely don't believe you've done anything to your Epic that would cause this kind of error. Then I'm going to take it that, either your question is rhetorical and you believe you have a hardware issue, or you believe that either EC05 or rooting is the cause and you're asking if anyone has had any similar problem with EC05.
I can say that I don't know of any similar problem with rooting or EC05. But seeing as you don't mention whether you're even stock or custom, or whether this problem arrived before or after you rooted, no one will be able to compare their situation to yours. Please enclose better information. The following are my generic solutions:
1. Download Sound Manager and attempt to tweak hidden sound settings.
2. Flash or re-flash a ROM (as I don't know if you're custom or not to begin with).
3. Odin to stock or stock-rooted EB13.
4. Head to your nearest Sprint repair store.
You can find links to everything you need for a fresh start in my signature.

Same issue
All notification sounds and ringtones play through the earpiece instead of the speaker
I had the issue on stock rom figured rooting would fix it.
It did for a couple days and then everything went back to playing through the earpieces as if I was on the phone.
I use a bluetooth car kit often and Im wondering if that has anything to do with it
There may be a simple fix for you. This has happened to me a few times when I have plugged up my Epic to wired headphones. Something about disconnecting can sometimes cause the phone to think it is still outputting sound to the headphones, so you cannot hear sound anymore . . . even with a restart. A simple fix is just to plug in a headphone jack again and remove again. This has fixed this issue for me numerous times.
Lost my sound today
Took the above advise and plugged in a wired headset then unplugged. Worked like a charm...for about 2 hours...then happened again. No matter what I try now, cant get sound again.
B4 u ask:
Been CleanGB/BML w/o any mods or themes for long time.
Havent installed any new apps in days.
No OC/UV
Sounds are fine in wired headset
BT works.
Cleared DV cache and reboot > no fix
ODIN'ed stock EC05 > no fix
---this tells me its not the os, but why did it work after plug/unplug headset?
Yes, Sprint store just down the street, but I love a challenge Anyone?
Same problem. Works fine if I plug in an audio out. But did ring for instant messages for about a day. So speaker does work. Wonder if I should go with the kernel that was orginally flashed with cm9?

There are two different issues being reported here.
One being, sounds come out of the ear piece and not the speaker (e.g. ring tone during incoming call can be heard with phone up to your head).
The other being no sound at all, unless you connect to the headphone jack.
The latter I would suspect to be a HW problem (loose internal speaker connection maybe?).
The former would be an audio routing issue I've experienced myself (usually related to BT, speaker-phone, etc).
A simple reboot should fix the routing issue (has for me a few times).
=]
If u Odin back to stock and it still doesn't work then its probly hardware. I tried everything thinking it was sw but ended up replacing the speaker.

I have the exact same issue, if I plug in headphones it will work through speaker, nothing connected it thinks headphones are connected. I have to jam a eyelet from my shoes in there, and connect it to bluetooth to hear audio...
So I ain't the only one...
Went back to stock, same difference, nothing I know will correct it...

This is a known phenomenon I've seen a thread here before where the headphones are reversed... like it think the headphones are plugged in when they aren't.... dunno what causes it but its certainly not too abnormal.

[Q] Call Audio Through OEM Car Dock

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, so please excuse me if I'm off-section/off-topic.
I bought an OEM Car Dock for my T-989 (also one for my wife's Galaxy S 4G), only to find out that the Call Audio was going through the phone speakerphone, instead of the Car Speakers.
After some research I found out that this wasn't an out-of-the-box feature, but one that had to be cooked in a KERNEL.
I also found out that this a known issue on all Samsung Galaxy phones, and after browsing Google and this wonderful forums, I found a "cure" on the "Captivate" section, which is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916233
I wonder if a similar solution could be implemented on our Kernels?
Thanks in advance!
Nobody interested in this? Unbelievable. It's a problem with all the Samsung phones/docks.
do you have Audio output mode checked in settings/docksettings checked?
App
I had this problem on my Vibrant. There is a app on the market that redirect the sound for you. It's called galaxy sound redirector. https://market.android.com/details?...xLDEsIm5ldC5tdXRlaGVhZGxpZ2h0LmRvY2tyZWRpciJd
This was an issue on the original galaxy s line. I thought they had it fixed on our phone. I can not confirm this I don't have the new phone dock. It should work for your wife.

I just picked up the dock last night and the audio was playing through the phones speaker. Did a quick Google search on the phone (car was parked in drive-way) and found that you need to go into SETINGS/DOCK SETTINGS.

We dealt with this on the Jugs thread because I originally thought it was a bug with Juggs and tried to bring it Whitehawk's attention. But we later discovered like you guys did that it's actually a setting that needs to be enabled! No problem with the car dock!

I do... I've checked all related settings, and nothing. All call audio routes through speakerphone. All other through car speakers.
Are we sure this ain't a kernel issue, as pointed somewhere I Googled? (I think is on the Samsung Audio Fix page on the market)

I have the same issue. I have 2010 toyota with oem bluetooth and i can pair fine with it and play songs do skype calls (which works on car phone) but when i have actual call it pauses everything and i have to use the phone speaker to talk the person. Very annoying i reflashed couple of times. Played with dock settings with no luck. So I now carry my cute lil handsets and plug it in when i get a call or avoid taking calls at all when driving LOL
Hey maybe its designed this way LOL
I will be following this thread hopefully something can be done !

Yes, only calls. Somebody said that it had to be enabled in a kernel.
Music plays fine through the car speakers.
We should demand (delicately lol) from our devs to cook this feature in their kernels.
Guise, don't let this die...
I've been wondering the same thing as well. When I first got the dock audio for calls & notifications were going through the car speakers but once I flashed a custom kernel that went away (all other audio works fine). I don't see a flashable stock kernel in the dev forum & I don't have ODIN here at work so I'll test it out over the weekend.

Can moderator move this to dev area .. so we can get some light on this subject from devs?
I have a stock SGS2, and the OEM dock. I use CarHome Ultra for my default Car Mode App. I also have my SGS2 paired with my cars BT. All of my calls route through my BT, but phone audio routes through speaker. I changed this setting in my BT menu to route only call audio to BT and not system audio. CarHome Ultra is also setup using its defaults for audio routing.
Hope this helps

This was originally on "Dev", it was moved here. Although I understand the reason why, I also vote for this to be moved to the Dev section, this having to do with custom kernel modification.
Just my humble opinion, of course.
I forgot to mention that I flashed a custom Kernel, specifically the "Synergy v0.10". If anyone fully-stock could confirm that call audio is routing through car speakers would be great.
No answers yet?
This is driving me crazy, why did Samsung design this phone so that all audio EXCEPT phone calls would go through the car dock!?!?!!?
Surely someone who knows something about developing is as annoyed as us!
I wish I could fix it - going to do some research here!
PS I vote that this gets moved to DEV section too... this is beyond just a Q and A... and more of a mission to solve!!

Google Now activating by itself - mic jack broken

This is an interesting issue. My S3 mic jack got messed up at some point. It still works fine most of the time. But sometimes when I have normal headphones plugged in, people can't hear me in a voice call, or the call simply hangs up.
But the most annoying thing is when it randomly activates Google Now, while Hotword detection is OFF. And starts issuing voice commands, like right now I'm listening to a podcast with people talking, and it literally picks up the audio from the people talking and searches it on Google. Right now as I type this post it's popping up in my face and searching stuff which is annoying. Somehow the noise going over the headphone jack is activating it. It's supposed to be off.
But if I turn hotword detection on, then disconnect the headphones completely, I can't get Google now to pop up from any app like that. EVER. Unless I'm already in the Google now app. But the messed up headphones can activate it from any app. How is this possible?
That's a new one I haven't heard yet. I have two suggestions. My first one is get it fixed under warranty if you can since it definitely sounds like its a hardware problem. Second is fix it yourself through a youtube video that deals with that issue. Can you recall how you broke it?

I had a similar issue and I believe it's the problem with the headphones rather than your Mic jack. When I used to plug my phone to my speakers Google now would pop up. But if I just plug in the Samsung headphones nothing would happen.

[Q] Technical help on inline mic earphone mic not working.

I cannot get my inline mic or earphone mic to work. My sound works but not the inline mic. I replaced the inline mic yesterday and the problem is still there. The only way i can use my phone to make calls is to use a bluetooth. So here's what i did to my phone with no success...
You may ask if the phone was working before i rooted and installed other roms? i don't know.. i actually rebuilt this t999 from left over pieces i had in my shop. I've tried almsot everything to get it going, from different kernels to now going back to stock.
Installed root66 rom then went to avatar rom which is pretty sweet btw. same issue
I tried every single stock firmware with no success. I checked the IMEI online and it doesn't show to be a T999L so i stuck with the T999 Roms.
went back to stock and allowed the phone to do an OTA update to the latest firmware uvdmd5 which is 4.1.2 of course and the issue remains.
The only thing i can hear on the other end is a crackling noise when i tap the mic.
any ideas on what i can try next? is there an IC that controls the mic that i can replace?
any input would be greatly appreciated.
You said you rebuilt it from left over pieces, have you considered its either a bad jack, and did you check to make sure there were no soldering mistakes? The jacks have been known to go bad before, so don't rule that out. Would be much easier to replace that than an IC!

Actually i did replace the earphone jack since it's an easy swap.. But no luck. and it's odd both the earphone jack and the regular inline mic do not work. the only way for me to make a call is via bluetooth
Oh, wait, when you say inline mic, do you mean the one built into the earphones that come with the device? Or the main mic you speak into while making a call?
Can you make a voice recording?

Yes the mic on the device itself.. actually the phone has 2 of them. one on top and one on bottom.. i guess the one on top is for when in speakerphone mode. I tried using googles mic search. i tried recording and when i play back no sound. i also tried the recorder and no luck.
The second mic is for the noise reduction while in call. It picks up background noise and filters that out so whoever you are taking to can hear you more clearly.
Did you try using the earphones with the built in mic? If those dont work either then it probably is a problem with something on the main board. If they do work, then its probably just the main mic that needs replacing.

Ok, that makes sense. I did disable the noise suppression through the phone settings.. but no luck either. i did try using the earphones with the built in mic.. actually i used 2 of them.. and still nothing. i'm curious to know if anyone knows which chip that would be on the board to replace it and see how it goes. would be a good learning experience.

[Q] Odd bluetooth and speaker problem

I have a samsung g-S2 (r-760) and installed the pacman rom along with the ACPverter-v1.0. I set up the rom and everything was fine except the bluetooth and the speaker. The bluetooth I have is a plantronics pro plus. The odd thing is that when I use the bluetooth I can here all my music but when I go to make a call I can not hear anything. The person on the other side can hear me just fine and the speaker does the same thing. If I disconnect the bluetooth and use the phone and select speaker - nothing comes out. The phone works up to your ear. I use odin to go back to stock fk19 and it is still doing this. Like a dummy I did the same thing to my wifes phone thinking it was just mine. Same results. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this solved.... Thanks in advance.
The speakerphone issue is already a known problem with AOSP-based ROMS. No idea about Bluetooth as I have it working on my end.
It's rather odd how the speaker / bluetooth still is an issue after ODIN back to stock.

I looked at all the others but this is doing something different alltogether. Yes I thought odin would solve the issue but it did not and I have flashed 2 other roms but the issues is still here.
