Do I need to be rooted to use this custom rom? If not what do I need to do?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Yes you need to be rooted to install any rom or custom recovery.
OK thank you. I rooted my previous phone and when I did. I had nothing but problems it seemed like.. but that was probably 3 years ago or so..

Since you had to ask if you needed root to flash a custom ROM they were almost certainly User caused. But to each their own.
Do you still need to use a computer and all that too root your phone? And I'm running 4.1.1 is that going to screw me at all?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Scratch that definitely User error.
There are stickies right at the top of this very section on how to root.

if your bootloader is unlocked you could flash twrp using goo manager and download the supersu zip.. then flash that in twrp to root

Guys some help. I been searching around the proper filer to root this phone but some of the links are old and not working.
Somebody need to get all of these together and make it a sticky on the development section.
I guess to root this is like rooting my s2. Flash recovery with odin and then flash the SU. But cant find it.
I want the latest recovery for odin the latest su and I want the stock ICS and JB roms with odin in case I do something bad and I need to flash that to unroot. and get it stock.
Can somebody point me out this. And please somebody make those files sticky so future members like me and old member would have everything handy and easy to find.
another thing. Do we flash radios here? On my s2 we could flash any kind of tmobile radios for better performance and data. Witch are the radios?
Another thing that I noticed when this phone came out is the people were loosing the IMEI number on their device how was that posible and what they do so I wont go through it
go into the dev section
The files you want are stickied already
Yes you can flash radios
Also, in the dev section

As far as I know backing up your efs does not preserve your imei you must set it in modem mode and write it to an app on your desktop. Easy as pie to do though and it's on the forum with a writeup

Thank you for your information. I have found several ways to root. 1 with odin like I used to do with the s2. and 2 with a odin stock rom and no tripping flash counter. Is that still an issue. Is there a way to reset the counter? I used to go back to stock all stock on my s2 and root several times before and that was never an issue! First time I see this about flash counter!.

Yeah tripping the flash counter is still an issue. basically it just keeps you from using all share an to watch movies from the media hub.
What I did when I fist got the phone was Odin root66 then downloaded goo and installed twrp via the app "not cwm"

Triangle Away can reset the counter as long as you have root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
Can someone tell me how to revert back to stock completely on a tmobile galaxy s4 on a Mac. I can't seem to find a guide or anything about this. If someone could help it would be greatly appreciated thanks.
http://www.androidrootz.com/2013/06/how-to-unroot-galaxy-s4-without.html?m=1
Try that way. I had some issues however because you can't then triangle away. I'm thinking of you mobile odin the first firmware our phone had than you could use the motochopper method to root again. Then triangle away. Then clean up root using superuser. Just a theory. Another way would be to run windows on your Mac. Let new know if flashing first firmware via mobile Odin than motochopper root than triangle away and unroot works. I'll go grab some helpful links

Read that too.
Also the reason you need the old firmware is because motochopper root method won't work on MDL firmware. But to go back to official you need to Odin back to stock. Root without installing custom recovery. Triangle away. Unroot through superuser. Only way I can think to do that on a Mac is mobile Odin pre MDL firmware. Goodluck

Let me know of that helps you. I'm in the same boat but I was just going to run a virtual machine and run windows on my Mac. You can Google how to do that as well than just use desktop Odin.

T-Mobile has released kit kat for the Note 3.
Has anyone tried using SuperSU's root keeper. Wanams ability to hide a custom Rom and taken the OTA. I was hoping if I disabled root and took the update I could re-enable root via and install Kit Kat from the OTA update without tripping Knox. Otherwise we need to get a rooted build and fkash it via Mobile Odin.
I tried and install failed

Hopefully someone will post a rooted build soon. Did you disable root before installing?

Apparently mobile odin can keep root on some of the other carriers builds without tripping knox. (have to flash bootloader separately)
I really wish there were step-by-step instructions...
Ha yea I had to use Kies to update and lost root nothing has changed so I would wait till there is update on how to root on 4.4.2
i understood that if i unlock my bootloader i cant get update from asus, but i checked it now and i got update.
can i download this update or should i download from the internet because it will lock my bootloader?
Unlocking the bootloader does not affect updating, just need to have stock recovery and no root to be safe

Well then you'll have to flash stock recovery and unfreeze all the system apps so it passes the check. Now what I did, since I couldn't find the 97 recovery was flash the 90 recovery and then applied the 97 ota through sd_update, then I applied the 139 update,
