I've tried most every version of every ROM on this site for the S4. I really want to use 4.3, but none of the ROMs I've used have been reliable for me. I'm not looking for "Well try this ROM, it's stable for me" stuff; believe me, I've tried it. I'm simply curious if anyone has had the same pitfalls on 4.3 as I have. I know it's obviously not a widespread problem; but then again, the newer version of TWRP working properly also isn't widespread but I'm part of that minority.
I can't use any of the GPe 4.3 ROMs; every version I've tried has ended up freezing on the lockscreen while trying to wake. I've tried the stock kernels, I've tried Ktoonzes' kernels, I've tried Chronic kernel; no mods, undervolted and not, under/overclocked, etc. Source-built ROMs based on 4.3 do the same thing. Logcats show nothing, last_kmesg is equally void of reason; they just stop. Any ROM based on 4.2.2 works perfectly, even the GPe 4.2.2 dumps. I'm just curious if anyone else has been stuck to 4.2.2 because of something like this...

Yeah, every one does it.. not right off the bat though. They might work fine for a few hours, maybe a day; I go to check what time it is and it's locked up. Black screen of death, totally unresponsive, but not powered off. Gotta hold the power button for like 10 seconds to shut it off. I can't be the only one....

As the OP said, I've used the kernel that comes with the ROMs (i.e. NO mods at all), I've used Ktoonzes and Chronic Kernel, both with the bone stock profile that's there upon initial flash and I've uv'd the exact same as I do for all the 4.2.2 ROMS. In fact, what got me to try the stock kernel was thinking that maybe I WAS undervolting too much; but even using stock values, all 4.3 ROMs will give me the black screen of death within 24-36 hours. If I run the same exact settings on ANY 4.2.2 ROM, my S4 is solid as a rock.
I'm stomped cause it doesn't happen on 422. I was thinking some left over script from a bad wipe or init.d .

Yeah, I had already ruled that out because of the way I tend to flash ROMs. Even when I'm updating I do a full wipe; dalvik, cache, data, and system. I have two sets of TiBu backups; apps downloaded while using 4.3 and apps downloaded while using 4.2.2 and I never re-use data through between different ROMs. I only restore user apps (not including system apps I change to user apps) when using TiBu also.

Another thing you can do is to install the 4.3 Rom without any user apps but the basic Google apps plus contacts and check if the SOD happens within 24 hours. If it doesn't, one of your apps has serious compatibility issues with 4.3

I'll give that a shot, that's really about the only thing I haven't done to fully eliminate any sort of software hiccup causing my problem... Thank ya.
I'm still curious to know if I've been the only one to run into that though...
I haven't had this problem on any ROM and I've tried almost all of of them. I have been on VirginROM for awhile no problems, but I've been trying out carbon ROM for a little bit and no problems there either. I agree with laureanop it might be an app, either way let us know what you find out, good luck man.

Before this latest incident, i had no preference if i were running a CM9/10 ROM or a Samsung based ROM
but the last week or so, my Radio went wacko and regardless of which ROM flashed or which version of Radio I used, the problem wouldn't go away.
The problem being having to manually pick a Cell phone provider manually after each reboot. (It has been working fine for the past 2 years, until recently.)
So, knowing that I could have easily ran this command to fix it
"dial *#*#2263#*#* to set "WCDMA 1700 preferred"
But!!... while trying that realized the CM9/10 and AOSP based ROMs do not work with those commands, as they are only available when you use the Samsung based ROMs like Dark side for example.
So, a quick fix which would have only taken 2 min tops to do, took me a good few hours, as i had to backup, flash back to a Stock ROM, go through those annoying setup wizard, run the commands, rebooot, make sure the settings sticks, then, back to CWMR again, flash back to CM whatever version, again do the annoying setup wizard, and reboot a couple times to make sure the radio is still working, before restoring the backup.
so that was a huge time waste, huge time consuming process
even if you did have a CWMR backup, it won't save you much time, the Restore Process actually takes longer than a clean flash
So, after this experience, I'm now much more inclined to stick with ROMs based off Samsung Stock ROMs
That's the PRO part.
The CON part of using Samsung based ROMs, too much junk and useless crap, included, also, it'll eventually lose support altogether from Samsung after a few more releases.
That's where the PRO part of using CM based or AOSP based ROMs takes the spotlight
I ponder if there's a way to enable those Secret Codes on the CM / AOSP based ROMs
--- EDIT ---
Another important PRO of stock Samsung based ROMs is the Hardware Acceleration for most video formats, while AOSP / CM based ROMs only supports a few
to mod or not to mod...
I agree with your viewpoint. I too, have thought this through, the long term decisions of which side of the coin to pick. Ultimately, the Samsung supported side will be phased out and the dichotomy with be solve for you. Besides, using technology is frustrating and time consuming; plus just to put icing on the cake, your significant other will be always *****ing you spend too much time "playing with your tech". That is until she/he breaks their toy and then it's like "what do you mean it's not fixed". Sorry, for the tangential nature of this reply, but this is how it is with me and most of my friends. Good luck living with technology.

Are those codes nestled inside an apk? I remember on my s3 I saw an apk which seemed to sound like the codes based off it's name. I currently am on my s2 right now though so I can't check.

nope, you type those in manually on the Dial pad to execute
the Apps you are talking about are just for people that doesn't know these secret codes by heart or saves you time by not having to search it here in the forums
I get your point and I am basically using the same setup as you and I do not have trouble getting signals. I've always used telus tlle4 radio. With that being said aokp/cm10 based roms have so much more customization that I don't even consider Samsung based roms as an option. I just can't!!

TW:
Pros-
Everything Works
The base is slow moving, so easy to fix problems when devving.
WiFi calling +++++
Cons-
Harder to customize
Almost never ever get new features, unless you make them yourself.
Obsolete software
Aosp based:
Pros-
Easy to build and edit source
Updated constantly
New features and software available immediately
Cons-
Buggy at times
Minor issues go ignored
No WiFi calling
Random reboots in class and buggy vibration control that distracts your professor repeatedly.

I much prefer a touchwiz camera. Also the swipe to call or text is nice on the TW Roms.

I prefer the AOSP (TW ROM) because of stability but I keep going back to ParanoidAndroid or AOKP JB to try the new features.
Try using TWRP is way more convenient (at least for me it is) if your constantly flashing different ROMs
Pros using TWRP:
- Fast ROM backups and restores.
- Queue multiple zip files to flash.
- UI is user friendly.
- CWM zip files work on TWRP.

I've been running the aokp since build 1 and i haven't switched back to gb or ics since i think it's a huge difference from both. I like it a lot, it's very smooth, the flicker can be get rid of by choosing a few options in settings like disable hw overlay, which completely gets rid of the flicker for me. I don't use google now but the search works yeah. I get random reboots and either pull the battery or wait a few seconds and then hold down the power button until it restarts, but it doesn't bother me as much it rarely happens at important times, usually it happens after i lock the phone and put it in my pocket. Also it freezes sometimes too but not too often.

I've been using AOKP as a DD for a while now I love it. I would suggest flashing the newest nightly (9-18). It's all about preference with ROMs, I love all the ways to customize AOKP.
It's like I tell everyone though, just flash it and test it out for yourself. Always make a nandroid just incase if you don't like it you can always flash back... no harm no foul. Ever since JB leaks I haven't gone back to anything else.
You won't be disappointed. Just follow the instructions and read up on the threads before posting questions/problems because if you experience an issue chances are other people have as well and there's a fix.
Have fun!!!

Reflash... sometimes these things happen don't sweat it your phone isn't broke. I flashed an earlier build 5 or 6 times until it worked correctly.
If at first you don't succeed.....
I've just switched to ericwill's CM10 build from AOKP due to SOD issues and battery life issues.
No RR or SOD yet and greatly improved battery life so far. Been running for about 18 hours.
As a side note, I much prefer AOKP for its customization, but I'll take stability over customization any day.
Of course, YMMV.

I've run BinaryBishops, AOKP, CM10, and now Paranoid 2.13 which I've been running around 27-28 hours uptime. Only one I haven't experienced any reboots or sod or any of the like was Binarys' but Paranoid is the smoothest by far. Camera, music, keyboard all super responsive, no lag I've noticed at all. I have been using various TW based ICS Roms for sometime. Darkside, Infamous, etc. I have been so excited to use Jelly Bean and try out project "Butter" I notice there is an official stable release for Cynogen mod 10. Is it time to flash? I get anxiuos about it because I delt with an old HTC HD2 for a year and there were lots of "work arounds" and such. It became rather annoying. So I really like BLN notifications, and having a camera that "Just Works" and decent battery life etc. Are these things I am going to sacrifice. And also, if I wait until there is an official release of JellyBean for our device over the next couple of months would we see more stable builds shortly thereafter? Would it be worth waiting another month or two? or is time for JellyBean? Just curious what folks thoughts are about this? Who is using what? How it works etc? I am really looking for a DD something I can be happy with awhile. I can always just do a Nandroid and hope for the best I guess lol. Thanks for any input!

Definitely try CM10!!
You will fall in love.
I know exactly what you are saying about being hesitant because you want something that just works, without a bunch of additional issues to fix.
I always seem to find problems with other other roms that push me into looking for something else, NOT HERE!
CM10 is just so polished, It even fixes things that didn't work in any TW rom for me such as being able to send / receive MMS while connected to wifi.
It even has BLN built in and activated from the start.
I must say that CM10 + T989 = THE BEST phone experience I have EVER had with any phone.
I was getting so sick of going through so many wrongs, always to end up having to settle with some negative.
Everything just works with CM10 on our phone, and works well at that.
I finally dove in with the nightly CM10 builds about 2 months ago and now the official CM10 release.
Not a single lock up, force close, reboot, glitch or problem here in the last 2 months.
Battery life is really good, phone is smooth and fast, and most importantly it's super functional.
Everything works so much better for me than with any of the TW roms.
I love how CM10 is minimalistic and fast, yet has so many functional improvements and additions.
In my opinion it is hands down the best rom for our phone.
I think the fact that there is an entire team of developers working on CM is what makes it so good, it's not just dependent on one person like most roms.
Flash CM10... fall in love with your phone all over again!!
And after you flash CM10, flash this GAPPS http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
I haven't had any problems whatsoever.

With how easy it is to do a backup/restore of phone these days, I find it easiest just to backup what I have and dive in to a new rom because the worst case is that you have to spend 5 minutes for it to restore if you don't like the new rom. Good luck! Hope you enjoy it!

I guess there is always the chance for a glitch, but usually it works fine, at least I haven't hit any yet
So I did it ! ! ! ! I like it so far. The aesthetics are very nice and I did miss the customization of Cyanogenmod. The only thing I notice right off is the BLN notification is craaazy. Doesn't really work. I have adjusted the setting to "always on" and other things. I even downloaded the BLN notification app. the settings also do not stick, it blinks even though I have it set to always on. Any thought on this?

Have you tried a different kernel? I'm using king kangers .12 on my phone and BLN works perfectly.

I'm not really sure. I never installed bln or tried to customize it, I just left it stock where all the buttons blink when I get a notification.

Thats a good idea. I just read in the Cyanogem Mod Stable notes that the kernel was tied into the ROM very tightly especially with project butter. Whatever that means. So maybe I will try another kernel. Do you use an app or just the system settings?

Been using ROM toolbox, the performance settings don't seem to stick otherwise.
Yea I had to use it on the liquid rom. I ended up using it for it's other features too. Rom tool box is a great app!

Had the ROM about 2 days and I do love it. Everything really seems to work better. Even some games run smoother. I am running the hotcakes kernel. I couldn't find the kang one. BLN still seems funky but it'll do. Battery is a little worse but I've been playing with it alot. Overall I definitely like it. Can't wait for 4.2

I'm glad you like it! It made my phone so much better. I thought battery life was not as good at the start too, but now I think it was just because I had been playing with it so much. Seems fine now.

I have not had any issues with the gallery, camera, or video recorder whatsoever. In fact, I took over 200 photos and 10 videos at a concert this weekend. I haven't seen any issues with it in the CM10 thread either, so I know it's not a common CM10 problem. Are you running the stock CM10 camera, or have you tried flashing the 4.2 camera? I know the 4.2 camera has some issues, thus why it's not stock on CM10 yet. I would say, try clearing your camera / gallery cache. If that doesn't work, you may have a bad flash. Make sure you wipe data / reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache, flash the rom, flash gapps, clear cache / dalvik again, fix permissions, then boot into CM10. Never had a problem doing it this way. I'm using 2.2.2 (i think) TWRP touch recovery. As far as the outgoing call issue, I have not had that issue either. Occasionally someone can't here me when they call me, or I can't hear them, but not very often. I had this issue on stock and every rom though.I think it's just a Tmobile issue. I'd say try some different radios. UVLE1 has been good to a lot of people.

Thanks. I'm not sure what happened. I flashed UVLH1 for the infamous rom. Maybe I ought to switch back. The only special thing I have done is flash the Center clock mod. Running stock camera though.

I flashed PA 4.3 and AOKP 4.3 as well as a few more roms. Everything runs smoothly until the phone automatically reboots or I reboot it. It gets stuck on the kernel screen. Also there are two ext-sd card folders. Is there a fix for this?

I'm not too sure why that would be happening, all I know is that since the 10/20 nightly, Cyanogenmod made some big kernel tweaks to their roms, and all kernels that were updated before that date wont work. Since you don't seem to be using a custom kernel, I don't really know what the problem is. But I can suggest another rom for you. Try Carbon. Great rom with cm speed, and (more than) aokp features.

I had pretty much the same problem, but what I tried to do is once it rebooted, I let it sit on the kernel screen for like 5-10m and after a while it booted up. Since then I've had no problem.

Yeah one huge problem I had with cm was issues rebooting. It would hang at the logo screen for a few minutes. But once I let it sit there for that long a few times it finally booted up and everything seemed good from now on. Lots of aosp roms have issues rebooting sadly.

5-10 minutes is understandable, but 30 minutes is not. It never rebooted.

Yeah, everything was stock PA. I used the late September update. I'll try Carbon or try it with a different rom.

My wife has a TMO S4 running Wicked V10, and it reboots often, I have tried Ktoonz kernel, I have tried Infamous Dev kernel, and all of them random reboot.
I would like to find a kernel that will be stable, but get her 4 hours screen on time IF possible.
Any recommendations?
Does she need to switch to AOSP/CM for something stable???
Any help is greatly appreciated!
People like the hacker 7 kernel.

Have you tried adjusting the settings in KTweaker? Not all devices react the same to the same kernel/settings.
Jovy's stock modified kernel is good too.

The Hacker v7 will be hard to come by as it's been removed from db's aroma installer. You'll have to find Aroma misc mod installer v6.

I thought the Hacker 7 kernel was for the international S4?
We can install it on the TMO S4?
I have adjusted settings in KTweaker, and no matter what I do, it still sometimes won't wake from deep sleep, or will Random Reboot at times.
The wife doesn't do much on her phone except read articles on the internet, and facebook, and pintrest.
She has become annoyed, which frustrates me, because I would take her to an AOSP ROM, but she NEEDS the TW features...LOL

I've ran Hacker v7 on Wicked v10 before with good result. I'm running it now with dbombROM. I have the M919 GS4 (T-mobile)
I've been running ktoonsez kernel ever since I got my s4. Only once was there a random reboot issue. I never have any issues with his kernels. To the op, the kernel is not always responsible for a reboot. You have to look at the last_kmsg in order to figure out if it was the kernel or not. But I love his kernel, great battery life and performance.

Just a heads up, there are development forums contianing roms and kernels outside of XDA.
Where can i get the hacker 7 kernel?. Can't seem to find it anywere
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I've flashed the mk2 baseband modem.bin file and flashed some 4.3 roms. tried several different kernels, ktoonz, modded stock and even a kernel from other forums. All of which gave Sleep of death issues and random reboots. I used suggested settings in ktweaker as well.
and before someone comes in and brings it up. Yes I always wipe everything before trying new roms, and I clear caches and fix permissions after kernels
I installed no 3rd party apps, ran the phone 100% stock (just with root) and it still happened. I'm also annoyed at the window transition animation always reverting back to 1x after setting it to "off"
Ultimately I went back to 4.2.2, cuz I can't really see a difference between 4.2.2 and 4.3 other than moving apps to sd, I don't even know what all exactly was changed besides that and the notification bar being transparent now. Is there a list of "whats new" in 4.3 somewhere?

Unless you can find an older version of db's Aroma misc mod installer, it's not available anymore.

Like roms, all are best and all are stable, the answer to this can only be determined by the individual user based on their needs and desires.
As XDA is not a support site, please take the time to read the products offered in development sections and figure this out on your own.
