Hey guys,
So I'm getting a little impatient with waiting for Gingerbread on my DHD and was thinking of going to CM7 now that its Final. Previous Custom ROMS so far havn't really done it for me. I kinda like the reliablility and battery life etc of the stock build.
Has anyone tried CM7 on the DHD who could maybe give a little account of how it worked out (battery life etc)?
Thanks

Battery life is superb on CM7 and much better than the Gingerbread Sense ROMs. I take it you have tried the latest Desire S builds? I recommend RCMix if you haven't. If you are wanting the pure Google experience though, you have nothing to fear with CM7.
Regards.
Stock rom offers a better connection between all the social networks, better stock widgets and htc sense camera app. hmmm i did have CM7 for while and i loved it but its just the camera app that did it for me, i guess im just too used to HTC sense !
I had no problems with CM7 either. Very nice rom. Camera App is nice. Audio is great. Having or not having HTC Sense is a big decision maker. Once or if you get bored of Sense, then you will really enjoy a rom like CM7 for all its other differences. If it could have the Sense Weather animations and clock, Touch Input keyboard and HTC Reader 2.0 - it could be my ideal rom at this point.
Although I'm a relative noob with trying the many Android roms.

The clock, albeit not with the flip function, can be found all over the internet. Search for Fancy Widget (Sense Clock) to find it. If you can't and desperately need it, I will pm you the apk upon request, although will have to dig it out first. Keyboard? I'm confused as to exactly what you mean, but you can use the HTC keyboard on CM7 as well as numerous other replacements. HTC Reader??!! No way! Aldiko and Laputa both make HTC's attempt look poor. Not to mention Kindle.
Personally, the slight nuances of pure Android are what I find hard to resist. The transition animations, which were present on the Donut Sense UI but inexplicably left out since 2.1, are a big one. I know you can find ROMs which include the different animations or use Launcher Pro, but they never operate 100% and stutter/glitch at random moments. Even the way the keyboard bounces onto the screen rather than just "appearing" gives a more polished feel. The clean simple UI, which lacks the clutter and plethora of menu's that Sense incorporates is a dream to navigate, and the overall speed of the OS is unrivalled. I guess for the "average user", Sense is a comfortable, intuitive blanket which makes Android accessible for the masses. In the Windows Mobile days and arguably when Cupcake/Donut were still in use, it was a necessity. Since 2.1 however, I feel it is no longer needed as the Android UI has evolved to a point where it should appeal to anyone.
Regards.
EDIT: Just seen your website Grant! Forgive the app recommendations, I see you are already well versed in alternatives.
Thanks guys!!
Im still not sure! I wasn't the interface i was worried about! I've given the customs a whirl and its been more the reliability and performance that have brought me back to the stock ROM. I've downloaded the CM7 zip! might give it a chance over the weekend before the week starts over! Ill always have my back-up for when HTC decide to give us an official release of 2.3.3.
Maybe ill never go back once i try CM7!
cheers
if your a gameloft gamer, i suggest sticking with a sense 2.2 rom. if your a audiophile, cm7.
So using it now! Love the look and feel except I find that its a big sticky when swiping between homescreens. Any suggestions?

Try a different launcher. Launcher Pro is one of the smoothest.
Regards.
The Regina 3D Launcher is one I've only just heard of - thanks to Pocketnow.com.
For anyone who hasn't tried CyanogenMod 7 - there are some screenshots here.
I've only tried 3 Roms so far on Android. It would be nice to have an ongoing poll based on member's records or vote or something to see which ones are the most popular.

One thing I found missing is the ability to hide certain albums within the gallery. A nice feature when you've lots of crap on you SD card! Also having the GPS issue that seems pretty widespread.
Other than that, battery life = more awesome than Stock!
Hi, Community
Guys, I new in the world android, but i decided to buy my firts android and is a Samsung Galaxy Gio.... a friend told me that these phones can be overlock the proccesor and much more.
but needed a rom mod to make all these things with a stock rom will not let me, here's my question which of all these roms are the most stable mod to work well as stock? and please tell me what are the bugs of all those roms mod if you have any?
Thanks guys for help me in the world android
For me the Particle ROM as I do not like custom launchers. I'm really satisfied with TouchWiz.
There is a small issue with Wifi though, it disconnects every once in a while.
Aside from that, stability, performance and battery life is very impressive.
hey there,
I use Particle Rom....impressive battery performance etc...
I also use a custom launcher with it called GOlauncher EX - I love it.
hey there
I've been using CyanogenMod 7.1 RC3 since a while, and for me it works perfectly.
However,I'm not totallly satisfied withthe battery lifetime, except that, it works awesome, I've been able tooverclock it to 883 Mhz.
And if you are satisfied with the TouchWiz UI, you can find a tutorial in CyanogenMod 1.st post, posted by me, it shows you how to put TouchWiz UI on CyanogenMod.
I hope I could help, however if youstill have any questions, PM me anytime I'm usually checking XDA.
I'm using GioPro 1.4 for 1 week almost and i have nothing bad to say about it, except the battery life ... can't get more then 24hours, but i'm playing 2-3 hours and wifi its always on. but it works like a charm. + I use GoLauncher ex and DT app2sd . i have arround 40 apps installed and 178mb free of phone memory
Using a CM 7.1 RC2 modded a few by me. faster and more stable of rc3.
Anyone had score in quadrant like 1800 apart from using CM 7.1 RC2?
Im using gio pro 1.4.& not many bug in this rom.simple & stable

There is no "best rom", what can be best for me...probably cannot be the best for you. So, this can be a redundant thread since everyone can have a different opinion. The best way to do it..try every rom..and the one you feel it fills your daily needs..that's the one
On that note, thread closed.
Hey all. I have a ICS (4.04) Galaxy S 3 for ATT. Its been working for me great, but since i removed the bloatware like gallery and s-memo things like the copy/cut/paste and the little icon that takes to to your gallery in the camera app functions wont work.
What GSIII roms would you recommend? A couple things i would like is if the battery life is the same or better than stock roms and the home screens had a landscape mode as well as portrait. (And hopefully they work in nova launcher as well).
When i had my GS1 i used the AOKP rom and i loved that. It just didn't have the homescreen portrait/landscape thing. Thanks for your help!
Edit: Also, is ICS>JB or are there pros and cons on both sides?
Different people, different preferences.
therefore, look, read, and test them out yourself.

If you like aosp then flash task's 650 rom. Pacman and rootbox are pretty good too. I would update to stock jb before you do anything. You will find it much better than ics.

I have to agree that JB is better than ICS just seems smoother and more polished to me. As far as the roms go i am useing the official CM 10.1 and love it. But you reall need to look and test a couple of the diffrent ones to find what suits you best.
These threads won't last long.
Recommended way:
1. Read OP for ROM features.
2. Check for ROM threads on top n see atleast a few latest pages for any issues or thanks. These are best indicators of how satisfied people are.
3. I'm on JB and this is quite stable. So I can say there are some very good JB ROMs out there.

Thanks everybody. First im going to upgrade to Stock 4.2. After a bit of that ill go to AOKP Then branch out from there.
Not new to rooting here, recommend me a rom. AOSP is preferred, but not necessary. I am currently using NovaLauncher, so if a ROM already uses it, big plus. Battery life is the biggest concern, even though I have 3 extended batts that I rotate. Awesome cool gimicky features are also a plus. Thanks, guys!
Honestly, it's all a matter of opinion. The battery life for most roms will be around the same.
At the moment I'm using paranoid rom which I love being able to adjust the dpi of each individual app.
My advice is just try them all, and just nandroid backup so you can always go back to one you prefer more.

I would like to think that I've used almost all roms on my sprint note 2 they all have their pros and cons I was using Jellybomb for a while-so many options and mods-v15 will be released soon so you can add themes IMHO with all the mods and features it has it is the most stable. The down side for me was all the added apps almost made it seem as bloated as stock touchwiz, so I tried PAC man. Also very stable the dev is very responsive you get the very best of the best paranoid Android and cyanogen in one rom for those of us that just have to be on the latest and greatest version of Android 4.2.2. This is zero bloat as stock as Google makes for it's nexus devices. The down side is that you miss out on some of the features that make the note the awesome phablet that it is like multi-Window and the s-pen is basically a mouse. Currently I'm using NoWizAOSPmod v1.4.6 I get the best of both worlds, no bloat, multi-Window and s-pen support, several aosp features and Google wallet. Been using it for about a week with no issues so far. Best thing to do is try them out as long as you remember to back up your current rom heck try them all out I'm fairly new to roming so the hardest thing for me was all the reading and searching. Sorry for the long winded post but hope it helps.

@op I use Carbon rom religiously and you can use an app called "write" for a s-pen like app and gps works over 3g but seems to go to "searching for gps " when switching to lte so I just use gps over 3g and has worked fine. Mms works for me with stock app, I just flip on data and send and receive pics.. I have been using the Carbon nightlies for a while and am more than happy.

Right now i'm torn between Macsrom Allstar 3.5 and AOKP build 6. Macsrom is AOSP and keeps all my features but isn't as customizable as the AOKP. If i can figure out how to theme Macsrom i'll be staying with that. It does have some neat features and good battery life. Anyways i would just make a backup and start flashing different roms till you find one that works for you. I'm new to this and it's all pretty straight forward.
NOWIZAOSPMOD is awesome, I've been using it for a month or so now and love it. I waited a long time to flash a new rom because I like the samsung features espceially with the s-pen and multi-window. This rom is awesome because it looks and feels like the AOSP but has the samsung features that I wanted to hold on to. I highly recommend it!
I really like DigiBlur -- it's a debloated TW ROM with some really nice tweaks and mods. I use Nova to get around the crippling of TW due to all the lawsuits. He just updated the ROM to MC2 and it runs very nice.
Pac man rom 4.3
Hi all!
I've become quite the Flashaholic since I got my Rogers S3 about three months ago... Just to name a couple ROMS I've tried: ParanoidAndroid, LiquidSmooth, Task650
I've stuck with Task650 now for a few weeks because I simply LOVE how smooth it runs, battery life is great (Noop and OnDemand Kernel Settings) and I love the Customization that comes with AOKP. I truly have no complaints...or so I thought.
I began rooting / flashing my phone the day after I got it; so I never had much chance to play around with the stock rom / TouchWiz features, So I wasn't even sure what all the features were! Today I was sitting here, and I saw a commercial for the S4, how a guy is watching a video on his phone and he looks away; the video automatically paused because he wasn't looking at the screen. I thought "This is pretty neat! I wonder if my S3 can do anything like that. Perhaps I'll have to modify it somehow or get a specific app / service." and so I started doing research. Turns out the S3 has something similar to this called "Smart Stay". I looked in my menu's and discovered it doesn't exist on Task650 so I googled it, and turns out it's not featured in any AOKP ROM. It's a TouchWiz feature. There were a couple other nifty Touchwiz features I liked such as "Camera Quick Access", "Double tap to top" and the Motion Quick calls (Hold phone up to ear while on a Contact Card or Text message to automatically call someone). None of these (that I can discover) are available for AOKP.
TLDR= Touchwiz has a lot of nifty features I currently don't have running Task650 AOKP.
I'm debating moving back to Touchwiz, and wanted the opinions of you all. The downsides to switching back? Any Custom ROMS with all these features that you'd recommend and Kernels for said ROMS with good battery life?
Tell me your thoughts!
Thanks!
Don't lol
I honeslty think he has the must up to date ideas/fixes of all the rom's out there. I'd keep it.

I agree, the Task650 ROM is amazing, but I really do feel like my phone is lacking now that I know the numerous features that AOKP and CM Don't include; that touchwiz has. Trust me, I have no real complaints other than I want more bells and whistles >.<

Good to see the Touchwiz vs. AOSP continuing.
You'll find die hard supporters of both here.
It's the age old chicken /egg Ford/Chevy argument. Most common answer you'll around here is "flash something and see if you like it"
While touchwiz has a bunch of good features that you might use some people want pure android without the Samsung bloat.

Hey hey! KorGuy haha, We meet again lol... You helped me with my Kernel Questions a few months back.
I do agree, the 'Flash and try for yourself' approach is best, I'm just looking for thoughts and opinions / Recommended ROMs/Kernels.
Side question; The features I listed in the OP: Are they exclusive to Stock or TW? Or do other Custom ROM's make use of them? I'm loving Task650 but I want the maximum bells and whistles my S3 is capable of...

The features you are looking for a Touchwiz based features. The Samsung / Touchwiz framework will not mesh with AOSP.
There are some custom Touchwiz based ROMs that are good, (Synergy, Hyperdrive etc)
I used to use Task's ROM for a good couple months flashing every update and when the new version of ParanoidAndroid I flashed it and haven't looked back,
I know there is one or two ROMs that are Touchwiz based with AOSP themes if that is what you are looking for.
I find the Touchwiz setup gimmicky but that is just me. I like feature rich options that are pure function and no gimmicks.

what is a gimmick with tw? multiview and allshare cast seem a whole lot more functional than 90% of the UI tweaking AOSP ROMs offer. I'm an AOSP man myself until TW 4.1.2 because truthfully it makes AOSP look like a big gimmick.

You know what they say... Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

Honestly, the feature that I miss most is the amazing camera on TW. It's loads better than the CM camera in every single feature. I miss being able to take non-blurry HDR photos or panoramas that don't take 5 minutes to render.
However, there is a bug in TW that causes horrible battery drain, so CM 10.1 nightly + Lean kernel are the way to go.

I don't know what TW ROMs you have been using but I get 2-3 hours of on screen time with Stockoroma or S3rx ROM or wicked sensation on att I know if you flash Ktoonez kernel you have to rename a file or it cause battery drain also greenify is a good app that's helps keep certain apps asleep and not running in the background and for aosp ROMs task650 is a good one but for some reason the browser won't let me download music from a website I like so I stick to TW

I've been using stock TW.
And holy crap, Leankernel is amazing. I've been getting 3 hours and 45 minutes of screen time with 15+ hours on battery total. I've never had such good battery life on this phone!
You can try Synergy Rom and Ktoonsez kernel. I'm easily getting 5 hours screen time and roughly 1.5% battery drain at idle with wifi always on. The best part is multi window on a debloated and deodexed rom.
