Issues with nfc - specifically google wallet - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I am running the most current nightly of the Pacman rom but this has been going on for quite a few versions and also in Paranoid Android when I tried it. Nfc works find but when I try to use google wallet it never finishes setting up. Checking the logcat it looks like its having issues loading the secure element. From what Ive read CM10.X should be using nfc with the required libs so it should work. Once the errors start happening in the log nfc will not work correctly until I shut it off and turn it on again, sometimes a full reboot is required. I know there is nothing wrong with the phone since nfc and wallet work correctly when Im using M.O.A.R. as my rom, so I was wondering if there is an actual issue others are having and if there is a workaround.
Thanks

Figured Id reply to my own with more info. Just installed CM10.2 and wallet worked as expected. As that worked I remembered PA and PACman are AOSP based not CM10.2. So I should actually ask is this a known issue with AOSP and is there a workaround. Thanks

No it should not be. The first devices with Wallet where the Nexus devices which run pure google aosp. So it has nothing to do with aosp as it has to do with a particular rom.
Have a great day!

Looks like the issue was caused by an old version of xposed installed on my phone. While I thought I tested PA and pac-man on a clean install I must not have. After updating to the most current xposed wallet does not cause errors to occur. Now all that is left to do is test to make sure I can pay for something.

Enabling NFC on CM10 for S3? Maybe I'm just blind?

So I searched for the answer, but everyone seems to say that GW is working on CM10...I did get it installed with the workaround, but what I'm finding is that in my Settings app in CM10, that there is no NFC option. Am I just blind and missing it in a different menu, or why does it not show up? I'm using the newest 7/29 stable build.

Don't hold this answer against me, but I am pretty sure that the NFC drivers are absent, Since CM10 is still in preview phase.

So I'm curious...on CM10, where should the settings be? Am I missing something, or should I reflash? Also...my soft buttons are gone?! Just the lights...they still work...
WOW!
I thought I was loosing my mind. I'm glad I'm not the only one having this issue. I scoured these forums so much today my phone ran out of juice around noon. I wonder why some S3 747 users are having issues and others aren't. I have the AT&T variant and am using the 07/29 preview release just like the other posts. I have already done all the wallet fixes, but can't seem to find how to turn the nfc on either. Can you tell us the work around you used to get yours to work?
I'm having the same problem, NFC options do not appear in settings and Google Wallet states that NFC is disabled. This is on an ATT SIII, running CM10.
Exactly...no idea on my end. I'm also finding that Android File Transfer doesn't work, so I can't use my new SD card...I also cant back up, since my current one is full...feeling like Im stuck for now.

You're running the preview build, right? Did you have to do anything to get NFC running or was it enabled by default?
So... By any chance, did you miss a step in the wallet workaround install? I had the exact same problem. Ended up having to wipe and reinstall my rom. Then follow the wallet workaround instructions exactly. Also, if you ever installed wallet from the market, go in and make sure auto update is unchecked. If you look at the original wallet thread in the development forum you'll see this happened to a couple of folks. Not sure of the cause, but I know that I had to reflash and also disable that auto update. I'd recommend a nandroid right after you reflash a clean rom and verify that nfc settings are there (under wireless - more).

Thanks for that, but that was the first place I checked...since that's where it always is. The whole problem from the beginning was that it wasn't where it should be.
Anyway....
Good news. I found a workaround if it's missing. If you install CM9, make sure its there, then do a no-wipe install of CM10...there it is. Not sure why that works, or why it's missing in at least a few people's downloads of CM10, but that's my workaround. Going to try the newest version wallet workaround now and make sure it works.
I'm running into a really strange problem... while running a clean install of CM10, NFC is available in the menu. However, after installing Google Wallet via this method:
blog.tekkidd.com/2012/07/howto-install-google-wallet-on-att-samsung-galaxy-s3-sgh-i747
the settings option for NFC disappears.
I can run NFC by going through root access and installing nfc.apk from the app folder, however, this makes the phone EXTREMELY unstable, and it will begin to freeze up every few minutes. For the time being, it looks like the best option would be to wait for Wallet compatibility to be improved in the coming updates.
That is really weird. What I did was flash CM9, then CM10. (now I'm on paranoid android...but anyway). NFC was there, then I used the method listed in the Q&A section to load the newest version. Of course, when I went to McDonald's to use it...it failed...as it always has ( I had the Verizon Galaxy Nexus at one point). I've never seen NFC actually work for real. I don't know what it is, but maybe the people that run the businesses don't have it turned on correctly. I was really wanting to see it work too.

[Q] AOKP and NFC

I have been using AOKP for several months now and haven't been able to get NFC tags to work with my device on this ROM in specific. I am able to use Android Beam with another phone, but tags that I know work on my friend's GS3, don't work on mine. I can neither read nor write to tags. It's like they're not there.
Yes, I did a full wipe before flashing the newest AOKP nightly from DougShell and tested the NFC capabilities with NFC Task Launcher before I installed any other apps.
Yes, I did check to make sure NFC was enabled and try turning it off and back on.
Yes, I did also tried it with Android Beam on and off.
Yes, I tried asking on the developer's thread without an answer.
I also tried the JB NFC Enabler found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822447
I've also tried going from Odin Stock, re-rooting, and installing the new ROM and NFC tags still aren't being detected.
And yes, NFC tags did work on stock ROM before I flashed AOKP. It just seems to AOKP and CM that don't like NFC for me. I can get it to work with other non-AOSP ROMs.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has the same experience or knows what's going on.
Anyone?
Come on, someone currently using AOKP has to be interested in NFC tags as well. Has anyone using AOKP also tried using NFC tags as well? Does it work for you, does it not?
Having the same issue here! I tried several of the same things you have tried with no luck! I'm anxious to know if there is a fix and if not, when will it be coming out!

[ROM] Pure Android 4.2 Jelly Bean (AOSP)

This is completely AOSP with Verizon bins, and root/busybox. It's ALMOST completely functional. Check the Current Bugs section to see the two insignificant ones that are left.
READ THIS FIRST: Upon first boot (after factory reset), everything on your sdcard is moved into a new folder named "0", don't freak out. This has to do with the new multi-user functionality, and this is how it will stay. If you're wondering about the problem of nested folders being created every time you wipe data/cache, and recoveries not being able to see your backups, this has been solved with the latest recoveries. It's NECESSARY that you update to the latest CWM (6.0.1.5+) or TWRP to prevent this from happening every time you wipe data/cache (do a factory reset). Update CWM through ROM Manager, TWRP through Goo Manager or flash it through fastboot. The downloads are below.

Kernel Source: https://android.googlesource.com/device/samsung/toro/+/android-4.2_r1
Love this ROM! The only thing that doesn't work for me is accessing Google Now from the home screen search bar. The actual app works fine but when I press it on my search bar on my home screen it is just a dead spot. Weird thing is that the mic works fine when pressed, it is just the word "Google" that is busted? Anyone else having this issue?
EDIT: I realized that it is an issue with Apex launcher not the ROM.
Nice to see you here Grouper! Good job on your Rom. I guess I can now actually hit the thanks button unlike Rootzwiki like button.

Hey I noticed you have the T-CDMA64 thing for the pulldown text. The eri.xml is missing in the overlay, It belongs in /device/samsung/toro/overlay/frameworks/base/core/res/res/xml/eri.xml. If you put that in your source it'll report VERIZON WIRELESS every time.
EDIT: Attached the one I use in case you need it.
EDIT2: I had to zip it to get the forum to take it

This looks like a very nice rom, I have downloaded it and now in the process of restoring my apps. So far so good, I am pleased with this ROM. I tried another ROM the other day and it was horrible, my data speeds were very slow, radio seemed almost like it was dead.
This rom is quick
it is very plain, which is what I like
Tether/hotspot working as designed
Fast
I love it. Thank you.
I will report more as I go along with it.
I loaded this up this morning, been running on it all day without any issues - everything I've tried works. Nicely done.
yes i've been running this since this morning to i'm getting exchange fcs but other then that its pretty nice

What exactly does the "READ THIS FIRST" affect? I apologize if the answer is obvious, but I guess I'm not sure what it means. For example, I have a bunch of Spotify songs downloaded offline. Does that mean when I do that again, I'll be taking up double the SD card space?

Ok, onto my problem. Since 4.2 renames my SD... I am unable to restore my backup via CWM. Any suggestions?
Appreciate the help!
Upon each data wipe the contents of the sdcard are moved into a new folder named "0," even if that folder already exists. There will be an update to your recovery (there is already a commit for CWM) to solve this problem. To be running 4.2, I would leave everything in the "0" folder. If you're worried about an app being able to see backups, there is also already a fix for ROM Manager if you've updated to the latest version.

ROM Overhaul ......
Ok so I noticed that most of the ROMs that I have used here including my own has been recreating the wheel so I have decided to go back to my roots and make pure AOSP with only the "fixes" found here and from AOSP so my ROM has become "clean" and basically stripped of its samplings from other developers written code to pursue my own originality so if you want just a basic AOSP ROM here is where you can come.

Happy Holidays to All!!!
Running your latest build and its really smooth. I'm hoping the WiFi not reconnecting after tablet sleep bug is not present but it did take a while for it to reconnect.
Running the latest version, it resets every once in a while. Doesn't seem to be tied to any particular app or activity.
Thanks I will look into that at the moment I am in the process of updating and fixing some of the bugs I've found
Ok as an update my ubuntu partition crashed on me and I lost most of everything so I'm back to square one again ..... but I have decided to take a different path .... I see that no one has maintained a completely vanilla rom, by vanilla I mean no features, no google, just Open Source Android, so this is what I will be offering from here on out .... vanilla android with my own fixes and coding (the little that I know how to do) and I'm going open source also I have received some pm's about adding devices to my rom ... and the only devices I have are the spcs gnex and the N10 these are the only devices I will maintain for since I can't possibly troubleshoot for a device I dont have .... so for anybody that was using my rom thanks and maybe I can catch you on the vanilla side (you know after you get bored with your full featured CyOKPAMuzEOS beast roms lol)
alright I'm completely vanilla now, ROM posted in the OP also I may have corrected that wifi disconnect issue haven't had a problem with wifi sleep or random resets on my n10 so hopefully you won't either

Flashed this build last evening, gesture typing doesn't seem to be working. I've tried clearing the keyboard cache/force stopping it with no luck. I even tried force stopping android system - just cause. Everything else seems rock solid.
after I uploaded the roms I realized that I enabled gesture typing but did not fix the driver .... as a temporary fix you can delete libjni_latinime.so and rename libjni_latinimegoogle.so to libjni_latinime.so it will will be addressed in the next upload

No satellites are in view and no signal is received from them. I've rebooted a couple of times and it still doesn't work. When I flash other ROMS the GPS works again. I really like your ROM and would prefer to run it. I've checked with GPS test plus and GPS essentials and get the same result.

I am not on your phone platform, but found this thread searching for others with Google Keep problems. I installed Keep last night, fired it up and it crashed. Tried again,, crashed. Rebooted the phone and when it came back it was like it had lost a bunch of 'data files' . By that I meant the phone acted as though it was factory reset, yet all apps were there. 90% of them would not run and those that did acted like they were just installed and had none of my settings. Restored data only via Titanium Backup and had to reinstall a couple apps. I may wait awhile and see if it was just me that had this kind of failure.
It works fine for me.
It's not all that exciting, but it's functional.
same here, used to work with stock 4.0.4 but since I have installed (from scratch) Alliancerom 4.1.2 on my S2, it keeps crashing on launch...
any idea ?
Are you guys having issues while running a custom ROM? I had issues with Keep on NoWizAOSP until the developer tweaked something and then it started working.
I had problems with NoWiz. Other ROMs worked fine w/Keep. I'm going to grab the latest NoWiz and see if it's working now.

if it can help, in my case it was caused by a customised Google Play (official Google Play but with a dark theme) bundled in Rom Alliance.
I had to uninstall it and reinstall the standard Google Play and it worked.
hope it will help.
Thanks for the hint. I don't have a themed or homebrewed version of Play, so no luck there. I can find random reports here and there of people experiencing this, on various phones with various - but always cooked - roms. So my guess is that Keep calls on something possibly not included in some of the roms out there... Speaking out my **s of course, as I have in fact no idea
Guess I'll have to wait a few days/weeks and see what the deal is.

I figured out the problem. You have to edit your build.prop file located in the system folder. You have to be rooted to do this.
Look for the line that says ro.build.type=user and change it to ro.build.type=userdebug
Then make sure to reboot the device.
Now it should work. I was having the same problem. ?
