[Q] Is this how it is to be done ? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
Lets say I have installed the latest stable release from Cyanogemod 10.1.3 on my GT-N7100 now if I wish to return to factory defaults and I follow the following procedure will it workout ? The steps have been mentioned in the order they ill be performed:
1. install TA on CM 10.1.3 and run it to reset counter and instead of booting normally, I will boot to download mod from the options provided by TA. -------->(This step is in accordance to Dr.Ketan as he has only mentioned here that one can install TA on his existing custom ROM and proceed.)
2. I will arrange myself a NON-ROOTED stock firmware/ROM from Dr.Ketan's repository and flash the same using PC ODIN in download mode. Now when the phone reboots and if I get stuck in a boot loop then I have to do wipe\data or factory reset (right...??)
3. if everything works out well I should now have stock ROM on my GT-N7100 and CWM will also get removed except it might leave traces behind on my SD card which I can remove by formatting the SD.
4. Now if the status is modified, I will have to clear data from enterprisescope and sysscope. This step GUARANTEES that my device status will change to NORMAL.
5. Wallahh!! Now I should have a completely factory manufactured device ready to use.
Now the confusions that I have are....
1. in order to install CM 10.1.3 I will have to install CWM so does installing CWM remove stock recovery ?
2. when I try to remove CM 10.1.3 do I need to flash stock recovery as well as stock kernel? or by just following the steps that I have mentioned above to recover my device is absolutely correct?
3. do I need to be worried about modem, network connectivity and IMEI No. during this entire episode? How will EFS help me?
4. This is current status of my device:
(i) Build Number : JZO54K.N7100XXDMG1
(ii) Kernel Version : 3.0.31-1071214
[email protected] #1
SMP PREEMPT Mon Jul 1 16:01:15 KST 2013
I hope things will work for this configuration.
5. is there anything else that I must take into consideration and after following all the steps are there still any chances of risking my device?

1.install multitool from my signature and make efs backup and place to secure on PC. (infact this step you have to perform before flashing cm)
To return to stock follow this to letter.
2.install triangle away and after finishing procedure straightway select reboot to download mode (not normal boot otherwise counter will again trigger)
3.straight way flash stock rom. With odin(I recommend mg1)
4.wipe cache and data from recovery
That's it.
Answer to confusion
1.yes
2.no, stock rom includes all
3.no, but before flashing cm install multitool and make backup and place it safely on pc/cloud
4 . Yes
5.no

Thank You very much Doc. :good: it just don't get it if it is really so easy then why do people end up screwing up their devices i mean i don't think if somebody installs a reputed ROM like cyanogenmod or carbonROM..etc then their should not be any risk of corrupting prod. id. or EFS and all those sensitive stuffs. Strange.....

It happens only to whom, who doesn't care to read.

*Can do a CWM backup here [(Backup and restore -> Backup) NOTE: When restoring backup you must first flash a stock from (2.2/2.1 if the back up was done on either, and 2.3 if it was done on 2.3) as it doesnt backup the kernel]
To upgrade to nightly or from rc1 to rc1.5:
1. Download update and copy to sd
2. Go to bood menu -> recovery -> Custom recovery -> wipe cache and dalvik cache (in advanced) Install zip file from sd card(select the zip file you copied to sd card) thats it.
To downgrade to Stock rom it is very simple:
1.Download RSD lite and Motorola usb drivers to flash SBF file.
2.Download Stock froyo SBF for your region(Search xda forum)
3.Check USB debugging on your phone and connect to the pc and wait until all motorola drivers install.
4.Open RSD lite(right click and open as a administrator). It will show connected. Now select the sbf file you located on the system and click start and wait till it completes 100% process. thats it. it will flash your phone to stock froyo and it will automatically restart and boot.
Note: Some times when rebooting after RSD lite flash your phone stuck in bootloop(M logo or it continously loading in Android menu). It is better to go to stock recovery(Hold the vol - button and then power button and then release it. you will get android logo with exclamatory symbol. Press vol - and vol + button at the same time to get in to stock recovery). Select wipe data/factory and wipe cache.

hi,
nice Guide
If you come from 2.51 and want to keep the downgradeability like me,
you can do the following:
-Do Step 1 and 2 of the initial Guide
-Download the fixed SBF and the CM Backup from here
-Copy CM Backup to your SDCard
-Root your Phone via Oneklick
-Install Defy Recovery and install the Recovery System
-Boot in Recovery Mode (pwr+vol_down)
-Install the copied .zip file
-Boot into bootloader (pwr+vol_up)
-flash the fixed sbf
-reboot
-proceed with step 5 of the initial Guide

So I can't use T-Mobile USA official 2.2 as my firmware? Then root and flash recovery, then flash cm7? No?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
great work, but 8. step is not necessary, 2ndInit has alredy been installed in the 5. step.
some 2.51 defys have sd card mounting problem in recovery 2.5.1.8
mine is one of them
i have to flash a rom above 2.51 and recovery works fine
Lol, if I had read this post I shouldn't pass all the morning trying to flash to CM7. At least I did it, hehehe. Thanks to all the posts here.

I'm afraid not. The linked ROM is a full (i.e. not fixed) ROM. However, according to Quarx you can use fixed SBF (which preserves downgradibility). You can find one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537.

Yeah I know step 8 isn't really needed but people might think u simply install the app and leave it.
As for the question about the t-mobile ROM You should be able to use it, I just prefer to use the same base as the dev to avoid any potential problems

maybe you could add what to do if a new beta is coming out. what steps are necessary to install the new version but keeping the settings?

If you're using the Aussie ROM then the fixed UK ROM doesn't seem to work unfortunately. I really want to give this a try to, but I'm afraid if I flash up to 2.2 and something goes wrong I'll never get my phone back to working order >.<
Fellow Aussie here, but got my phone outright off eBay. Lost downgradability ages ago. Anyhoo there's a thread on installing cm7 on a Telstra ROM So u might wanna check that out

You can restore all your application settings from titanium backup, I prefer to wipe before I install each new beta just to get rid of any potential bugs, but to retain all your apps settings etc simply install the new zip thanks for the tip btw

[Q] [SGW-I8150]Auto-Rotate Not Working

Yes, I've tried turning on autorotation.
I've been having this problem for quite some time now. I've checked with the calibration app that's there in settings. The phone is unresponsive no matter how I move it. I've also tried *#0 method and the accelerometer was not recognized. I'd previously tried the recalibrate yamaha tweak in adb shell on my sg3 that ran froyo. Is there any such luck here? Or is it a hardware issue?

I'm currently running the Malaysian version of the ROM. While easily available online, I'd rather stick with what's available and trustworthy on xda. Flashing another country's ROM isn't gonna be an issue right?

I tried re-flashing stock rom with odin as well as a Vietnamese 2.3.6 ROM...In both cases, while Odin shows a "success!!" message and allows the phone to reboot, the phone still has the 2.3.5 ROM that it came with and all user+app data intact. As far as I know, that isn't supposed to happen right?

If you use a OnePackage-file to upgrade the firmware, all data will stay. If you use the asian firmwares with many files, to flash the firmware, the data will be vanished after the successful upgrade.
If you want to flash a firmware with a OnePackage file and want all data to be deleted, than you have to do as followed:
1. Backup everything manually what you can!
2. Flash via ODIN ClockWorkMod Recovery on your device(english). Scroll down to other and select ClockWorkMod.
3. Once ClockWorkMod is flashed, go to the recovery:
a) backup and restore -> backup to external sdcard
b) backup and restore -> restore from external sdcard
This is to make sure the files aren't corrupted, if this is successful you can be sure everything is backupped. If you get a MD5 mismatch something went wrong. Try again!
c) wipe data/factory reset -> confirm
d) wipe cache partition -> confirm
e) mounts and storage -> format system -> confirm
f) mounts and storage -> format cache -> confirm
g) mounts and storage -> format data -> confirm
4. You restart your phone in Download Mode and flash a firmware using this instruction, which is provided in the thread under Firmwares.
5. Now you will have to flash again the ClockWorkMod recovery to restore your data.
Than open ClockWorkMod Recovery and:
backup and restore-> advanced restore from external sdcard -> select the backup -> Restore data -> confirm.
Now if you want the stock recovery back(needed for OTA updates) instood of ClockWorkMod, than go to the Others or Sonstiges and select the stock recovery, and flash it on your device.
6. Now you should have a fresh device like you have never flashed before!!!
Oh yeah, the reason why you have to make these complicated steps: Because you were flashing all different kinds of firmwares, you system will be a mess. To make sure your device is not a overwritten old firmware these steps are necessary.
Flashing via ODIN does not delete all old data !!!

Thanks,but no luck!

Thanks A lot for the whole thing, man!
The thing is , I successfully reset the phone. I still have two problems though.
1.The accelerometer is still unresponsive.( I'm beginning to think it's a hardware issue)
2. While the ROM itself is 2.3.6, and all indicators including the loss of data and the setup wizard popping up on the screen on first boot tell me that I've successfully replaced the stock rom, my about phone details the phone running 2.3.5
Any help on that?

[Q] Question new 4.3 update to Note 2

I use to be with Sprint and have the Note 2 (Android 4.1.2) flashed.
I see now that the phone is asking me to apply the new 4.3 update BUT since it's been flashed to work with Cricket well I am having doubts
of doing it and pay for the re-flash again or not at all.
I really would like to upgrade but having to pay each time I get an upgrade is ridiculous so I am wondering if I can do a full flash OR root
myself.
I downloaded the Galaxy Note Toolkit 4.10 I believe a few hour ago and I am wondering if this is the right tool to upgrade and root my Samsung note 2???
If not, where can I find instructions (easy ones, even if I have to pay just a couple of bucks) but that would make the upgrade/root very easy.
I hope someone here can guide me what to do or where to go for such a task of doing my own upgrades and roots and backups and so on
Thanks in advance !!!
I am also on cricket with my note 2 but I did the flashing myself.
Couple questions for you.
1. Are you stock?
2. Rooted?
3. Custom recovery?
Now my experience. I got mine off ebay and did everything myself. While flashing custom roms I ran into the problem of losing my flashed info every time I flashed any rom. This turned out to be an issue with the baseband/radio I was using. Once I got the proper one on it was not an issue again. I have flashed everything available for the note 2. Nothing has made me lose my cricket service since the baseband/radio fix.

I did a root but it was a long time ago and frankly I don't remember a thing about it, I am trying to refresh my memory by readung more about rooting. To answer your questions 2,3 is no. On number 1, frankly don't know what you are talking about
I just took mine when I was with Sprint and to a store and they did a (partial I think) flash on it.
I get errors on username/password when connecting to cricket but that's about it.
Right now it's working with cricket and has android 4.1.2 but I want to upgrade to 4.3 and would like to learn(again) to do it myself.
I just need directions on how and if it's possible to do a full flash and root on this phone.
Thanks again
Well I can give you a hand in doing it all. I am at work today but am off tomorrow and will dig up everything you are going to need and put it in a zip on my file host. Then when we are both abke to get together online I will walk you through everything.
Will even help you get data going (although I have not made 3g work only 1x)

The zip should not be unzipped. You place it on your sdcard boot into a stock recovery with stock ROM and choose flash upgrade zip from external sdcard. Although this is not a preferred method the following paragraphs give better options.
Best thing if you want stock rooted 4.3 is to follow lorjays thread. If you want note 3 features use synergy rc3 from his forum. You will not have the Knox boot loader or files (which is a plus) with either. Just read the op of the one you choose and follow the directions exactly. Now 4.3 has its issues (mostly MMS and WiFi which has an Odin flashable fix) and note 3 features kills a couple of things adding contacts (flashable fix for that) and updating profile/prl does not work.
If you have other questions ask here, use Google search, or read both threads start to finish. Everything is covered by those 3 methods.

Sounds great, I have another question:
I found the following 4.3 update : MK4 4.3 Full Flashable Zip
Which is the android 4.3 upgrade software, if not let me know. Anyway, I would like to use that one and if there is a better one let me know and if you have a link to it, better.
I understand that I need to place that zip file in the phone memory, then use the Samsung Skipsoft toolkit to root it and install such 4.3 software???
Let me know if I am thinking right on this...
Then that's it. I will have a fullly rooted cricket phone with andoird 4.3
Am I in the right direction?
Thanks

First off go into setting, about phone and give me your baseband/radio info. Depending on what this shows we might have to do a few other things.
Below are the steps to get custom recovery, backup current rom, and install tw 4.3. Although I want you to do some other things first just in case you lose your cricket flash. So read over the steps below and if you feel comfortable doing those then I will PM you with a couple of links to software and steps to make sure you have the needed info to reflash in case you lose your cricket info.
Okay I got the files and links you need.
1. Hope you have the drivers but if not these work on windows7 64bit (if you are using other windows version let me know and I will see what I can find) http://d-h.st/77G
2. CF-Auto root Which contains the Odin version I use. Just extract the files and then place the wifi patch in the same directory. If you need help using odin just ask. http://d-h.st/Twx
3. Wifi patch. You will flash this using Odin (put phone in download mode to use odin, power off then press vol-, menu key, and power at the same time) http://d-h.st/eo8
4. Custom recovery (philz modified cwm recovery) This will flash, backup, and restore every rom available for the note 2 without any issues
http://d-h.st/users/philz_touch/?fld_id=29060#files This is the download site choose philz_touch_6.01.2-l900.tar.md5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2552653 this is the xda thread for his recovery
Now that you have the base tools time to go through the steps of upgrading. First you want to have 2-10 gigs free on your sdcard (if not backup your sdcard to your pc and then delete till you have 10 gigs free, this is needed to backup all your internal sdcard data)
1. Pick the Touchwiz rom you want. Plain stock 4.3 which you have the choice of odex pure stock or deodex (only known issue is mms, use any 3rd party mms handcent, gosms, hangouts, etc..) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541395 or 4.3 with note 3 features (again has mms issues) http://the-plattypus.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1&p=1#p1 r3 is the version you want to download.
2. Place the rom you want on your external sdcard (sdext)
3. Power off phone and then enter download mode (press and hold in this order vol-, menu, then power) it will take you to a warning screen press vol+ and continue
4. On PC extract the cf-auto root zip. Place philz_touch_6.01.2-l900.tar.md5 file inside that folder along with the wifi fix file. Now run the Odin3-v1.85.exe
5. Click on the button that is labled PDA then select the philz_touch_6.01.2-l900.tar.md5
6. Connect your phone to your PC and you should see a com port listed in the odin app
7. Click start and it will flash the recovery and reboot your phone.
8. It should reboot into the recovery app if not power off the phone and the press and hold vol+, home, and power. It will boot into recovery.
9. Now you want to backup your phone. Choose backup and restore, then custom, custom backup job, (you want to select ((put X beside)) backup boot, backup recovery, backup system, backup preload, backup and-sec, backup modem, backup /data data, backup /data/media)
10. Now select start custom backup job, backup to /storage/sdcard (this will take a long time)
11. Now go back to backup and restore, custom, custom backup job, and only select efs (now your phone is completely backed up)
12. Now choose Wipe data/factory reset, clean to install new rom
13. Now choose Mounts and Storage, format /data and data/media
14. Now choose Install zip, choose zip from /storage/sdcard then select the rom you decided (lorjays or synergy)
15. After install reboot to system.
16. Once it boots up hold the power button and power off the phone.
17. Reboot into download/odin (vol-, menu, power)
18. Connect to PC and open the odin program again
19. Click on the PDA button and choose wifi fix, then click start
20. Phone will reboot and then you will setup the rom
Now you have a rooted Touchwiz 4.3 rom
If you have any questions please ask before you start the process!!! If anything goes wrong your phone will be unusable till you can get me or someone else to help you. So please ask questions first!!!

Thanks for the steps, really appreciate it.
Ok. I might do it tomorrow since it's late here already but here is what I have done on my own so far. I hope I didn't mess anything
I have used the Samsung Note 2 Toolkit as mentioned in some of my previous messages and did the option 2 which is a
Root/Unroot option and selected the ALL IN ONE[ Flash insecure boot, Recovery, Root, BusyBox, Rename Restore Files ]
After following the instructions it rebooted and it is now rooted but still using android 4.1.2
I am thinking of using synergy-n2-4dot3_r3.zip since it's looks better and as you mentioned, has Note 3 features :fingers-crossed:
I am going to upload it via Kies Air to the phone the synergy-n2-4dot3_r3.zip file.
Tomorrow will continue...
Here is the info from the about:
Model: SPH-L900
Android version : 4.1.2
Baseband version: L900VPAMC2
Kernel: 3.0.31 -1090526

Well, I did it !!!
I am trying the Synergy rom and so far it's looking great.
I wish I had 4G LTE capabilities since my cricket plan does allow such feature, but before I had 3G and it's working well so far.
If any trouble arises, I will post them.
Thanks !!!

[Q] Beginner trying to root/flash new ROM on T989!

Hi all, found my old SGH-T989 and I want to turn this phone into my play phone.
I am new to rooting and all and I don't know which versions of what to use. Everytime I mess up, I have to restore the phone back to stock 2.3.6 then upgrade to 4.1.2 via Kies, then try to root and such.
Problem is... I don't know which ROMs, gapps to use and which cwm to use!!! Seems like every guide out there is outdated because I get stuck in a bootloop every single time I try to flash a ROM or I get Error 7...
Any tips?
I just want 4.4.2 at least on my SGH-T989 What are my options? What are your suggestions?

You need to be on 4.1.2 for this to work. I am bit responsible for what happens. You can get 4.1.2 for Odin from samfirmware.com. Download the latest TWRP from here: http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/hercules/openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.0-hercules.tar and flash it in Odin. Your phone should reboot. Boot into recovery by powering off your phone and then holding power and the two volume buttons until you hear two vibrations and then hold just the volume buttons until you see a black screen. Release all buttons. Flash @Chainfire's SuperSU in recovery ( http://download.chainfire.eu/452/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip) Wipe cache ald Dalvik and reboot. You should be rooted and able to flash any KitKat ROM. AOSPA is a good choice. It is pretty stable.

I just flashed CarbonROM on my sister's phone this weekend. Rooting is not really required.
My process:
Flash TWRP (this was the most difficult of the entire process. It is still relatively easy though). I used Odin to flash the latest TWRP. TWRP provides odin flashable archives so it is really just a matter of knowing how to flash thing using Odin. This does not require root. The CWM wiki page says that Rooting is not required, nor is it the preferred method when flashing a new rom.
You can use Heimdall, but it is very hit and miss with this phone. Odin is much more "reliable" on the T989. I tried Heimdall, but I ended up having to reset my sister's phone because it flashed the recovery incorrectly.
Download the rom of your choice and its associated gapps package. Put them on your sd card
Boot into recovery. You will need to use TWRP's mechanisms to wipe/factory reset the phone. Then wipe cache and dalvik cache.
Install the zip of the rom and then immediately afterward install the gapps package. I usually wipe the cache and dalvik cache again for good measure at this point, but I understand it is not needed.
Reboot the phone. If all went well, it will take awhile to boot, but you will be sitting at the start screen of a brand new shiny rom.
Set it up and start using it. Most roms already come rooted.
The reason rooting isn't required using this method is because the download mode of the T989 essentially gives you root priviledges.
I've used this process on two T989 phones without any error. If you want to backup your phone, do that in step 3 _before_ you wipe/factory reset your phone.
Usually what I do is just use Odin to flash ClockworkMod then copy the ROMS to the sdcard. Boot into recovery then install zip from SD Card, select ROM. If you use CyanogenMod then just select your device and Google search the cyanogenmod gapps

Newbie lost among tons of information.

Hi XDAians,
I'm extremely lost after reading up about rooting, flashing, ROMS, radios/modems etc.
Just need some guidance and clarification regarding my current situation so as to give me a better understanding.
Definitely not seeking to be spoon-fed.
Currently using this as a spare phone after upgrading. Would love to give a new lease of life to my Note 2.
Plans:
1. Change from i317 AT&T (Currently) to N7105 Intl variation
2. To root device ( After changing to N7105)
3. Flash CM/stock touchwiz with latest possible updated Android version+features+UI
- Update to latest version of Android, say 5.X (Lollipop) /ROMs that gives newer features like DN4 which I came across in the forum.
- Play around with different ROMs after more understanding.
4. How to return to stock ( N7105 )
Questions:
1. Do I root then flash ROMs first or the other way round?
2. How do I root? ( Please help me by pointing to me a simple/newbie friendly one)
3. How do I flash? ( Please help me by pointing to me a simple/newbie friendly one)
4. How do I check if my device is unlocked?
5. Is recovery necessary even after i factory reset my phone?
6. What else do I have to know? ( Please help me by pointing to me somewhere I can read up myself)
7. ROMs recommendation.
8. Tips & tricks/experiences in flashing or rooting
9. Checklist before rooting/flashing
10. What is Odin
Thanks in advance!
Are you replacing the i317 with an n7100 or just changing the motherboard to an n7100 motherboard?

I'm replacing the i317 with a N7105.
1. Do I root then flash ROMs first or the other way round?
There is no need to root if you intend to install a custom ROM. If you want to install a custom ROM, the easiest way in my opinion would be to flash TWRP for the n7100 using Odin.
2. How do I root? ( Please help me by pointing to me a simple/newbie friendly one)
If you want to root a stock Samsung ROM, install TWRP via Odin and then flash supersu from TWRP.
3. How do I flash? ( Please help me by pointing to me a simple/newbie friendly one)
Copy the custom ROM you want to a micro SD card and place it in the phone or copy the ROM to the phone's internal memory. Boot into TWRP, wipe the system, data, cache, and flash the custom ROM.
4. How do I check if my device is unlocked?
The phone does not have a locked bootloader; however, it may be sim locked.
5. Is recovery necessary even after i factory reset my phone?
You need recovery to factory reset the phone. A recovery program should always be present on the phone.
6. What else do I have to know? ( Please help me by pointing to me somewhere I can read up myself)
7. ROMs recommendation.
Search the Android development thread and try out a few ROMs to see what you like.
8. Tips & tricks/experiences in flashing or rooting
Read, read, and read. Also, be ready for potential problems. I highly recommend having a USB jig on hand.
9. Checklist before rooting/flashing
Make sure you are flashing files that are meant for your phone.
I only root phones using supersu and TWRP.
10. What is Odin
Odin is used to flash stock Samsung ROMs to a Samsung phone. Odin is not used to flash anything other than a Samsung.

1. So just be downloading Odin from this website ( "odindownload. com" is this tie official website? My chrome extension shows it as malware though ) and flashing TWRP, I can installl ROM?
2. So basically TWRP is an interface which I can flash ROM, root etc.?
3. Alright, in TWRP I can do all these -> "wipe the system, data, cache, and flash the custom ROM" ?
4. I can use my local SIM card though. It shows up 4G, I can make calls and send messages.
5. I see, and this recovery is included in TWRP or is it a separate thing I have to do?
8. What's a USB jig?
I have always used Odin 3.07 for my phones (s2, s3, s4, Note 2, Note 3): http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1168421
TWRP is custom recovery. It replaces the stock recovery.
TWRP can wipe the system, data, cache, and flash a custom ROM.
Yes, you can still use your sim card. Some custom ROMs, by their nature, may contain small bugs and one of these bugs may affect your ability to get 4g/LTE.

It calls Odin "malware" because Odin is a tool that can be used to push things to the device regardless of any security measures other than the stock anti-flashing protocols of the device itself.
It calls it malware and virus because it has the power to alter system, "crack" it basically.
