[Q] What happened to Messaging app - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I would like to get back the Messaging App that was available prior to 4.3, can it be restored?
Is there a way to used the messsaging apk that is on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and prior?
It was simple, easy, and worked.
Does such a messaging app live in the exposed mods?

There is no stock messaging app besides Hangouts. As far as I know, you cannot text on a tablet without Hangouts, Google Voice etc. The messaging app for a phone is not on a tablet. There are apps out there that will let you pair your tablet with your Android device though so you might want to try that. The messaging app from phones are not able to work on a tablet for a few reasons.
1. Not Supported
2. You need a texting plan for your tablet. ( I'm not sure if you can do this or not. I have the wifi version)
3. Texting someone means you need a phone number to text from and obviously our Nexus 7s aren't phones so you can see where that goes wrong.

I was able to get sms messaging on my 3G nexus 7 using the apk posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2178697
I am able to send and receive sms as its enabled on my data plan, it also has a phone number but it unable to accept calls

Thanks for the reply but I use wifi with my Nexus 7 and would like to have a messaging program like exists on the phone. Currently I'm using Mighty Text. It works alright and also works with the computer but it's not as simple and easy to use as the messaging app on Galaxy S 4

the N7 is my only phone so mighty text 'tablet version' is useless. the phone version is not white-listed for the n7 on the play store.
I pulled mighty text 'phone version' off my previous phone with 'apk extractor'. installed and works great along with go SMS pro.

How is the N7 working out for you as your only phone? What setting did you have to change in go sms pro to get it to work because mine wont send or receive anything? thanks

Unfortunately Skype is crap on the N7 and the reliability & call quality is nothing like the iPhone version of Skype.
Hence I then pulled the new Android Skype 4 from a whitelisted phone with apk extractor app and installed on the N7 .. unfortunately Skype reliability and call quality is still crap.
I am now using a SIP VOIP option (PennyTel) and it is much more reliable with better call quality.
Unforunately the Samsung HM5000 does not answer calls using the pick-up button .. but perhaps there are some hacks or apps to make it work.
No changes to Go SMS Pro .. just intstalled my mobile phone SIM and it worked .. perhaps there are differences between carriers.

How to: Install WhatsApp on your Nexus 7

METHOD 1
What your need:
Your mobile phone
Titainium Backup * Root
Steps to install WhatsApp to your Nexus 7:
Use TI Backup to backup WhatsApp on your phone
Copy the 3 backed up files (properties, tar.gz, apk.gz) from your Titainium Backup folder from your phone
Install Titainium Backup on your Nexus 7
Copy over those 3 backup files to your Nexus 7 (into Titainium Backup folder)
Run Titainium Backup and restore WhatsApp (App+Data)
Titainium Backup will first restore the app, and might self open
When WhatsApp opens up just close it
Titainium Backup will resume to restore the data
Now run WhatsApp again, and it will prompt you to follow the initialization procedures
It will fail after you submit your "mobile phone" number and Force Close
Run WhatsApp again, and you are good to go
:laugh::good:
Edit: Please note that my TitaniumBackup was done on a custom ICS ROM (ParanoidAndroid) from my Samsung Infuse 4G phone. ICS is the closest thing to JB... so perhaps if you back up from Foyo or GB, it might not work. But give it a try.
METHOD 2
StrangerWeather said:
This is my method. Might work with an landline if you don't have a mobile at all, I haven't tried. I have an ordinary mobile (not a smartphone), and I managed to get Whatsapp to work on the N7 using Bluestacks.
Start by following this:
Install Whatsapp apk: http://www.whatsapp.com/android/current/WhatsApp.apk
Install Appguard - details here for the next few steps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...1&postcount=17
Now if you fail verification for both the SMS and Voice methods like I did, and if you don't have a smartphone, the following is an option.
You need: a pc, a mobile phone for texts (an ordinary mobile phone is fine).
1. Download and install Bluestacks on your PC http://www.bluestacks.com
2. Select "Social" and install Whatsapp on your PC.
3. Input your mobile number. The SMS verification should work this time. Be patient, it can take 10 minutes.
4. Once you have your code go back to your Nexus 7 and input it.
Hope this helps!

I've tried this before.. apparently it screws up the entire system. Some messages get send over to the phone, some send to N7 and some both! I wouldnt know if any of them didnt get sent over though..
But since this confusion started, i decided to take another number and use whatsapp along with it.. At least both my devices can chat with each other

Yes, it has the same number as your phone. But think of it like this, is not really a "number". WhatsApp treat your "number" like the account name (username).
It will go to your currently active device. I don't have issues with the messages, I used Nexus 7, all the messages went to my Nexus 7. If i start using my phone, messages will go to my phone. However, it MIGHT cause confusion if BOTH of your devices are active.

Think of this as Microsoft MSN Messenger... you only receives message towards your active client...
Anyhow, I'm using my mobile phone right now with WhatsApp, zero issue, since it is the currently active device.
It doesn't screw up anything, WhatsApp server just delivers to the whatever active device, and there is no sync just like MSN Messenger...
THANKS for this, I was a little disappointed when I can't install Whatsapp at the Play Store. :good:
Didn't work for me. Install went fine (restored from TB), but on running, it says that it can't identify my device, and that tablets aren't supported. Thinking that maybe it was my DPI, I changed to 160 and tried again. No dice.

That's normal, just hit cancel when it says can't identify your device, let TB restore the data as well. Then launch it again, the restored data will trick WhatsApp to bypass the initial device checking. It will "think" your device is supported (because it thinks it was from your mobile phone).
If it failed, just uninstall WhatsApp completely from your Nexus, then do a restore completely from your TB (MUST BE APP+DATA).
PS: My TB backup was done on ICS from ParanoidAndroid ROM for Samsung Infuse 4G, so, MAYBE there could be some conflict if you come from Foyo or GB. ICS is the closest thing to JB.
Thanks for sharing, working beautifully on my 7 now!

This trick works also with viber... Thanks OP for sharing!
Edit: I used my Galaxy Nexus running JB for backing up the apps. They both run great without errors or fc's.

Technically, you can, if you can swap the iPhone SIM card into an android phone, setup Whatsapp in your android phone using the same number, then use TitaniumBackup to back it up and restore it in your Nexus 7.

I had the same problem, kept saying not compatible with tabs. After a few dozens of tries I got it working. Uninstalled everything whatapp related (from N7)and just used the 3 files from titanium back up (from Gnex) placed those 3 files in back up folder (titanium) and restored from there. I can assure you it works. Follow steps posted om some earlier post here.
Messages do not syncronize between devices. What I write on Gnex stays there, same for Nexus 7.
Good luck.

It needs to be YOUR OWN android phone, what's the point of taking your friend's backup? You will end up having his user data and Whatsapp number, which doesn't match your Nexus 7's user (you). Of course it won't work. The point of taking the TB backup from your own phone is that when you restore it in the N7, everything would remain more of less the same, including the user profile etc.
Unless you can add your own Google account + Whatsapp account to your friend's phone set it up, run it, then do a TB backup under your own accounts, otherwise i highly doubt it will work.

Way to sync my texts?

Hello,
I have a wonderful nexus 5, that is my current cellular device. And I also have a wonderful nexus 7 2013. I tend to carry both with me all the time, considering the nexus fits perfectly in my jacket pockets.
I sync there files countless ways that it's as if my nexus 7 is simply an extension of of the 5. One thing that has been bugging me is the fact hangouts does not sync conversations via text messages from my nexus 5. Which makes sense considering there is no cellular plan on the nexus 7.
But that shouldn't make this impossible.
Couldn't there be a way I can sync my text messages some way or another. I know there is countless internet texting services that are completely free. Couldn't I forward my mobile texts to one so I can respond on the 7? Even if it took another number that's fine. I could just use a text app but I haven't found one that can forward my texts from my mobile.
Maybe I could figure out a way to use a combo of features. Maybe send the push notifications to my nexus 7 from the 5 but have it allow me to respond.
Heck maybe even if I could finally get a VNC server working on my nexus 5 that would be prefect too as I could just jump to it to respond and go back to nexus 7ing.
I don't know I'm at a loss so I figured id ask the collective intelligence to maybe help spark some ideas.
Or yet maybe someone's done this before with other devices.
Just thought I'd throw it out there, as I'm sure others would appreciate being able to do this at times too.
Thanks for your time guys.

Tapatalk will do what you want. Your N5 and N7 stay in sync over BT or Wi-Fi and is what I use. Funny enough sometimes the text shows up on the N7 first for whatever reason. Nice app.

I've been looking into this app as well. Do you have to use Mighty Text as your primary SMS app on your phone for this to work with your N7? Or would I be able to use this with Hangouts (since that's what I use for my SMS and MMS messages) on my phone?
^Pretty sure you can use whatever you want. I never used hangouts just the aosp message app.
The one you install on your phone isn't even an sms app it just links to the tablet app through your google account.
Try it out.

I use MightyText (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mightytext.tablet). Works really well, and it's free. There are two separate apps in the play store, one you download and install on your phone, and the other on your tablet. You can also text from your computer as well using this app.
Thanks. I tried it. Very nice.
If you are on Verizon you can use this...

I've been using Google Voice since my first gen Nexus 7. It works very well. You'll have to setup a google voice number in your google account. On my N5 I use both google voice and 8sms because I have a very small text plan with unlimited data. It's also nice to be able to swap back and forth in the same conversation using either my phone or tablet. At times I actually do quite a bit of texting on my N7. The only real drawback in my opinion is no mms with google voice.
I found and use Verizon Messages as well, it works great and does what I need (sends MMS as well as SMS). Will check out Mightytext though and see how the two compare.

Texting for wifi tablet version

Does anyone know of a text application I can use on my wifi tablet without having to use on my cell phone? I don't mind using a Bluetooth sync application. I tried Pro SMS but it won't work on the tablet. I used textra on my cell phone and I don't want to change it, so the text applications that require installation on both devices will not be what I want.
Perhaps use Samsung's sidesync
I dont think what you are asking is possible or would even be allowed due to security reasons.
Anything like that would surely need permissions on the host device (your phone) via an app.
Side sync which is Samsung devices only has the ability to allow you to use your tablet as if it was your phone.

Odd question from someone who personally does not send a lot of texts. Why can't you just use both? One to text with on your device, textra, and one to sit on your phone and intercept text messages from your tablet, mightytext. Dose mighty text actually have to be the default messaging app to work or can it not just sit there quietly in the background and intercept text messages for you?
I'm using TextNow on my tablet. You can even make calls from it if you have the credits to do so and those are easy to get if you're willing to watch short videos. I've never had any issues with this app.

Verizon Messages & can't attach pics to message after root

Hi. BL unlocked and rooted VZ Pixel XL. After root I noticed that I could no longer attach a pic or media to a message using VZ messenger. No matter what I choose I get an error message saying "Message + keeps stopping". Odd thing is that if I select the pic in Google photos and use share, then select VZ messenger I can attach and send the pic. I tried attaching a photo using the stock messenger and have no problems. Anyone else experiencing this?

I have the same issue...can receive mms and group texts just not send them... unlocked and rooted on a Verizon Pixel XL...must be something with root...cuz it worked before that...can anyone else confirm with the OP and myself if they have any mms issues after root on Verizon?
OP did mms work before rooted? I tried Verizon messages but it force closes on me...and Textra and Google messages just hangs for until I get a send failed notification.
I chatted with Verizon they have no clue what is causing it...has to be the root I'm thinking. Never had this issue before on any other device I have had...
Edit: I read your post wrong seems we have different issues . I can attach pics just they never send. Weird how I can receive then just not reply to a group message at all...?

You need to use Verizon's messaging app. Verizon has an app for computers and tablets as well. I also use it on my iPad Pro. Works great.
If you're like me, who hates the visual of Verizon's app, you can use their app to set up on other devices, once it's all setup you can go back to Google's Stock app and you still get your texts on every device

Awesome tip, thank you! I hate the look of VZW's app and never use it, so this sounds like a good solution.
I concur, I abhor the UI, but find it tolerable with a lot of customization. I use it because it is amazingly feature rich. The ability to filter conversations by media, links etc is huge for me. The Glympse integration and auto emojis, as well as embedded image search for quick gifs are things I use every day. The picture editor is ungainly, but also very functional. Scheduled messages, auto restore for texts, messaging features like live typing notification, etc.
Atheistic wise, I prefer Textra, but I always find myself wandering back to message+ simply for the features. Again, lots of customization required to be tolerable. Thankfully it allows for that.
