[Q] fully bricked - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Let me begin with this statement "it was my choice and stupidity".
I've been running on cm10.2 which i love, now tonight i tried exploring another rom. downloaded energy hd and and tried installing through clockmod. next thing i know it failed. and screen went off. sad end of story for my s3. i tried everything but not even the light will come on when plugged in. when plugged in to pc driver for QUALCOMM HS-USB QDLoader 9008 was installed but still no luck.
is there any way of reviving it?

First things first. Questions should be posted in Q /A . Now that we've got that out of the way. What version of CWM are you using ? Is it the latest ? Did your Battery have at least a 50% charge before you tried Flashing something ? I know they say 30%. But I like to be on the safe side. Where did you get the Rom you Flashed ? Link to the thread please.

There is an old thread all about recovering from flashing a i9300 rom
[HOW TO] Unbrick your Sprint phone from flashing an International gsm boot image
Maybe that could help you out?

yes battery was close to 50% was running the latest clockmod. I downloaded energy hd from here. What doesnt make sence to me is how the phone is completely dead.

Energy HD is for the international s3 i9300. Those roms will hard brick your phone because the partition layouts are completely different from that of the US S3s. So when you install it stuff gets installed to the wrong place. The partition we use for our Boot loader is the partition where the i9300 has its kernel so it would wipe your bootloader flashing a i9300 rom

Well let me just start with the bad news, energy is an international ROM not meant to be on our phones. What does this mean to you? Your bootloader is destroyed(oh s*it) but they're is still hope for that shiny paperweight. There's two options at this point. One is located here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2369125
in order to do this method you mush have no less than a class 10 sdcard AND it must be the same size as your internal memory. I.e my phone is the 16 gig model so I need a 16g class 10
Your second option takes a professional(or some expensive toys) but is a sure fire bet to get your s3 back up and running again. What you need to do is find a JTAG service. Look on craigslist and whatnot to see if a small game store around you does them. If not there's a few good mail in services online just pop out the SD and send it in. This method however is going to be around 70$
best of luck man hope this info helps.

Only problem I see with this is you would have to do this mediately after flashing. If you turn that bad boy off its officially a paperweight and you can't even get into DL mode

Let me reiterate, read EVERYTHING you must follow this 100% exact for this to work.
What happens when you flash an international zip is you format the bootloader. I think Samsung did this to confuse people on purpose because between u.s. and international the partitions for bootloader and kernel are swapped. So an inter. Zip wipes our Bootloader partition and tried to put your kernel there. The debrick image simply allows you to boot your download mode from your SD card instead of from the phone. From there you can return stock and restore the proper partitions.

[ROOT] for LG Optimus G Pro E98x + CWM + TWRP [s-off]

Note: This Root method is no longer supported, most models have been updated to newer software and does not work. If you want this to even have a chance at working, you must have the original software that shipped with the phone 3 years sgo.
This is a great root method with easy to follow instructions that anyone can follow and without all the extra jibber jabber most do not understand. The originator of this root is @giantpune, please give him a Big Thanks!!!
**This Root Method has been confirmed working on the models listed below**
E980 AT&T (Does not work on 10P 01/08/2014 update)
E985 Euro/SFR
E986 Euro/SFR
E988 HK
E988 GCC
E988 India
E988 Starhub Singapore
E989 UK
E989 Israel
1st: Go to http://www.lg.com/us/support-mobile/lg-E980 and download the drivers, let it install all the way before going to the next step.
2nd: Go to 7-Zip and download the program, it is the best one imo.
3rd: Download the attached root file below
4th: Un-Zip the Root file using 7-Zip to a known location
5th: Make sure in Developer Options you enable USB Debugging in your phones settings
6th: Make sure your phone is in Charge Only mode
7th: Plug your phone into your computer and give it about 3 minutes before going to the next step to ensure your computer can see your device
8th: Open the file and run the CurrentRoot.bat
9th: When it prompts you to go to MTP mode, do so in the same place Charge Only was found. LET IT SIT, 3 MINUTES MINIMUM!!!!! This will insure that your computer has seen your phone as a MTP device, if you rush it, the root will fail!
10th: Now hit any key to continue
11th: Once it is completed and your phone reboots, safely remove hardware to remove your phone.
You can download many free root checker apps from the Play Store or use SuperUser that is included with the root.
If you need the original AT&T TOT file with the update attached please visit

Thanks @giantpune
side note: I am not responsible for your phone, the above process worked flawlessly on my LG Optimus G Pro US Version E980 on 7/12/2013.
How do I know if I have the "Value Pack Upgrade"? I got an OTA update from AT&T/LG a few days ago, which completed successfully but my Android version is still 4.1.2. Is there a baseband version or build number I can compare against to see if I have this "Value Pack Upgrade"?
That was the value pack upgrade sir ?
I followed these directions exactly and it worked perfectly! I installed Root Explorer and it was successfully given superuser privileges.
Note to others: on step 10, the phone will reboot and the error message you may see on your phone (that a process stopped unexpectedly) is normal. I waited until the phone fully rebooted and finished loading everything before disconnecting my phone.
Android version: 4.1.2
Baseband version: APQ8064/MDM9x15M
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Build number: JZO54K
Software version: E98010k
Awesome, I added a note about waiting for the phone to reboot. I did not see the message you got but I may have missed it looking at my daughter dance last night to Xbox.
Enjoy sir
Thank you for the above instructions. Zero issues.
Waiting the 3 minutes made all the difference.
This is the way to go to root! Thank you again!

Well, the rooting police are after me..... lol
Tried to apply the update while my E980 was rooted. No go, got the 0x13e error. Research says that's probably because device is rooted.
So I unroot and try again a couple days later. Same error displays. Device restarts and a new error displays. Something like "Device is suspected of being rooted and rooted devices will not be updated".
So I'm hiding out until the heat is off.
In the meantime, any thoughts.

First off none of this would be possible without @djrbliss
The Freegee app now includes support for the LG Optimus G Pro. While the bootloader is not unlocked per-say we do have a working exploit in loki thanks to drjbliss's work. I've take loki and reworked it into cwm (twrp support coming soon). This means that rom devs and kernel makers no longer have to "lokify" their images, it's done after flashing in recovery. Freegee also offers the possibility to disable lge security (wallpaper) on the stock rom.
Instructions
Please note: this requires root before you can install this! If you haven't rooted your phone yet, now is the time to do so.
There is a free and donation version of Freegee on the market. Both are exactly identical and always will be, except in the name.
Make sure the version is 1.1.0 or greater! You will brick if freegee is less than 1.1.0!
You can download the free app here and the donation app here.
When you run the app you can click on "Unlock my phone" to start the unlock process. It will ask you if you want to disable lge security or not. Please note to disable the lge security it's dependent on your sw version. If you are not supported, upload the boot.img through the app and I'll add you to the white list.

FAQ
Can I flash an OTA after installing a custom recovery?
No for two reasons. 1) You need stock recovery to apply the delta updates. 2) It's possible in a future update for the bootloader to be updated and loki patched or for loki to need to be reworked. Just don't try it.
Does this mean I can flash custom ROMs now?
Yes. However, the custom ROM must be made for your device. You don't have to worry if the rom or kernel has been lokified because these recoveries do it for you!
How can I uninstall this?
Click the "Restore with backups" button
Can I upload my backups?
Yes the application has built-in dropbox support. Access it through the settings menu.
Where is the source for you loki-fied recoveries?

That is correct. After you install a zip or use side load the boot and recovery partitions are checked and then lokified if needed automatically. So a kernel maker no longer needs to release desperate downloads just due to Loki. You can disable the check for Loki in the advanced options menu but there really is no need to unless a new unlocked boot loader is brought up.

Ruh roh. I downloaded this. Backed up my EFS (wasn't sure if that was necessary or not though I imagine that's where the IMEI is stored in case that is somehow wiped), the clicked unlock. It downloaded some files and installed CWM and said everything was successful. Now when I reboot I get "Secure booting failed. Cause: Device Unlocked" or something. It then flashes the LG logo again and then the AT&T animation plays and the Home LED button flashes forever. It will not boot and I can't use any button combo to get to recovery. What did I do wrong and do I have to LGNPST back to stock again?
I was rooted and nothing else. No custom recovery. Also, I chose to disable LGE Security when prompted? Any ideas?
Purchased the donate version. Thank you, so much!! :good:

I just posted about this right before you. Best bet is to wait until @Shelnutt2 gets back online. Unless of course you'd rather just LGNPST back to stock. Myself, I'd rather try to fix it first since I literally just set my phone back up after a softbrick just about 2 weeks ago.
Edit: Flashed to stock with flash tools. Oh well, I'm used to it by now, haha. I probably messed up by trying to 2 button into recovery. I read a few comments now about using a program to boot to recovery. I don't know if 2 keying into recovery trips some sort of flag that causes it to not boot correctly. If that is the case, then let this comment server as a warning to others.
Thanks for the program anyways.
awesome job on making this app, but im gonna hold off on trying it for now. im on at&t but seeing alot of people talking about how they bricked, plus i just sold my laptop so right now aint nobody got time for that. but i will do it soon. cant waite for a way to get the second init recovery off here without flashing back to stock and to boot twrp with a button combo. still a great phone and i see awesome stuff coming to it soon....
Very strange how this is messing up some phones, when I was testing for shelnutt2 everything went fine on my phone. I did the security unlock as well and I seen it flashing with success and rebooted fine. Is anyone using this getting the phone to boot up normally?

Reboots after Factory Reset

I have a LG Nitro HD, which I unbricked, rooted, etc, and upgraded to Cyanogenmod 10.1. Worked great, I ended up giving it to my friend. He gave it back to me the other day because his brother accidentally did a factory reset and it "DOESNT WORK" as he put it. So i tried doing setup manager and stuff and whenever i clicked a button, it froze and rebooted. I reflashed CM10.1, same thing. Flashed to PARANOIDANDROID, same thing. On the lockscreen, everything is fine. I can touch the screen and pull down notification center without any issue, but as soon as i unlock it and touch the screen, it locks up and reboots. It seems like it's allergic to my touch....any help would be greatly appreciated as he wants to sell it.
Thanks!

If not, you can try and emergency restore by clicking on the Help button and changing your region or recovery mode.

Haha well turns out I jumped the gun and flashed CM10.1 too soon...apparently I have to have the stock ROM to SIM unlock it....reunbricking...

Good stuff. I'm not sure where you ordered your code but I have used this place before and it was cheap: http://www.cell-1st.com/lgcodes.htm

I used an eBay unlocker that I've had previous success with. Thank you though! Now to put stock back...again...lol...
Also yeah I tried the 2945 code but it doesn't work in Cyanogenmod10, and after some digging, I found that it's best to unlock on the stock ROM anyways.

You don't have to unbrick again just flash one of the stock ROMs available.

Can we get a screen shot of your "About device page... expecially the baseband and kernel versions... build also if possible.
Can someone let us know if the update fixes the stupid screen rotation bug when you turn off auto-brightness. Also, if there is a noticeable change in overall snapiness. Thanks!

General noob question:
How would I go about rooting 4.3 for AT&T? Can someone point me to the thread of it exists? Yes I've tried the search function and no nothing exact came up. I don't want to mess up and then be "that guy" on here crying about making a noob mistake.

Will you be able to go back to 4.1.2 if you take this update?

But that's a thread specifically for 7100-based (non-LTE) variants, right? Whereas we have n7105-based LTE Versions...if I'm missing something please let me know. TIA.

I rooted using this method while still on 4.1.2 and it worked flawlessly.
I then paid for and installed SuperSU Pro and activated "Survival Mode"
Lastly, after the OTA update was COMPLETELY finished, I followed this simple procedure to get root back again.
SuperSU disables Knox for you on 4.3 which is also nice. I should have qualified here that I am COMPLETELY stock other than root. I have not "frozen" any apps., deleted any Samsung provided files, etc. and I have stock bootloader and stock recovery. This will likely NOT work if you have done any of those things.
Is there a flashable version of this? If not, can somebody make one? Thanks.
I'm running a custom rom and rollouts/updates from vendors freak me out because I don't trust not one of them. Knowing AT&T they have thrown in some bit of encryption that locks the bootloader. I understand this might not be the case this time but I do know none of them can be trusted.
Now if you excuse me, I'm 1/2 done with 1984 the book and my tin foil hat is making me itch.
Guys I need help I am stuck, I am using unlock att with tmobile, I check software update but it days interrupted, and I even tried with kies but it's not connecting at all, I tried 2 pcs.... Any help... What to do to update it... Please

The update has only been out for a few hours and we are asking for .zip files already ??
Sheesh...
Give the devs some time to pull it apart and clean it up...unless you would like Knox and a bootloader lock ??

I have a few questions for you and/or those more in the know:
If I were to do this same thing, would I be able to flash a custom recovery (like TWRP) and/or flash custom ROM's/Kernels like I can already do now? One of my main concerns is that the stock kernel doesn't support Boeffla Sound, and that really makes for better audio on this device...might as well take full advantage of that Wolfson DAC...
I have to admit, it would be nice to be able to use pure AT&T stock, but rooted, as a base...this is why I loved the old CleanROM AT&T SE so much...
TIA for any guidance you can give on this.
Side note: after ODIN'ing back to 4.1.2 MA4, it says I have a 741MB update I can take....I'm sure that's this 4.3 update...Culpeper, VA here.

I did the same as marchusdavis but it resulted in a total disaster. After I downloaded the OTA update from AT&T I restarted my phone and it installed through CWM-Touch. At the end it asked if I wanted to ensure root was maintained and of course I said "yes" there (as well as through my SuperSU Pro Survival Mode). When it booted, my WiFi no longer works AND I lost root.
If anyway has any advice on how to get to a stock 4.3 from here please let me know!
Ugh, having trouble updating atm.
Goes up to 30%, then my phone reboots and says
"The update was interrupted" or something like that
On stock 4.1.2 rooted with stock recovery if anyone can help.

I don't believe so, as I am completely stock, bootloader and all. If you want to install other ROMs, you'd need to use a different method I believe. Likely downloading this update either via Kies or something else, and use ODIN to do everything. If you search around a bit on XDA, you'll probably find someone who has done it successfully and posted how. While I like custom ROMs, I have not had a need to use one yet on this device. However, if Samsung doesn't eventually give us Air Command, that might be enough to make me try it!
Is it possible to get the official update from the leak or do I have to downgrade to 4.1.2? I tried updating from the leak but it said it's the latest version.

Cnexus - any idea why yours is much smaller?
80mb vs 128mb
The 80mb file is about the same size as pre 4.3 images.
I just used a difference size when dumping it.

If the bootloader gets corrupted on the Galaxy SIII, you can flash the image file to an SD card and get the phone to boot from a fully bricked state (phone will not power on at all). The image file must match the current bootloader that is installed. There are other threads here for previous builds with the matching image files.
(If I got something a little wrong in terminology or concept, I'm sure someone will pop in and fix anything I got mixed up on explaining. )

Him or me?
Unfortunately, my phone hard bricked during some testing of ND8 and now it's a paperweight as I haven't been able to get it back. I'm sure we'll see more of this going forward. I bet there were a few when 4.3 came along as well but we weren't around for that release here.
Looks like Jtag for this phone and I haven't decided what to do in the meantime to replace it; temporarily or permanently.

I personally think I'm done with Sammy after this phone. Knox is too much of a pain in the arse and if they keep adding to it it's gonna eventually be locked down. I'm looking at the OnePlus or the LG G3 or the new M8, but not til Christmas or Tax Time.

Edit: Additionally, I had issues getting this image to flash in Windows. I had to flash it to SD in Ubuntu. If you can still read the SD in Windows, it didn't take the flash. If the card is unreadable in Windows then maybe it flashed ok but still no guarantees it will work if the bootloader partitions are corrupted like mine were.

I was having connectivity issues so I flashed a new modem. Then, for some weird reason, I lost audio and had ZERO signal except wifi. I was advised to flash a TW rom to try and update PRL and activate the phone. I flashed Wicked Sensations, still no luck. So at that point, I was trying to flash back to non rooted using >>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099. Thats when it bricked. I don't blame anyone but myself. I didn't read the ENTIRE thread before flashing and it hard bricked. Won't power on, no recovery/download mode. Light comes on with battery pulled and plugged in to USB.
I have tried all the threads and has no luck. I bought a 16g class 10 sd card. Tried many different debrick files. Tried writing with win23 and Cygwin, nothing. I am thinking I may need a different image based on my bootloader, I just have no idea which it was at the time.
