Hey guys
I just followed this guide to root, S-OFF, partitioned and installed the CM7: [Video Tutorial] Noob Proof Everything Desire Guide UPDATED [04/04/11] after playing with it for a while, I think A2SD is not working.
Before flashing, I partitioned my SD with Gparted Live CD like this:
1st Partition: FAT32
2nd Partition: EXT4
3rd Partition: EXT4
After the fresh flashed, no apps installed, storage information read:
SD Card:
Total - 13.80GB
Available - 13.32GB
Internal:
Total - 148MB
Available - 108MB
then I installed Titanium Backup, Doodle Jump, SwiftKey Keyboard and Quick System Info Pro and it now reads:
SD Card:
Total - 13.80GB
Available - 13.20GB
Internal:
Total - 148MB
Available - 92.59MB
is this normal? No I don't think so.
I also checked from Quick System Info and at the A2SD storage it says Total:756MB Free: 701MB
then I searched through the threads and found this How to check if Apps2SD has been installed correctly... so I typed in the command "su" then "ls -l /data" in Terminal Emulator but it returns no dalvik-cache -> /system/sd/dalvik-cache
app-private -> /system/sd/app-private
app -> /system/sd/app like it wrote in that thread.
Then I typed "busybox df -h" and also no /system/sd is being used.
Last command, I typed "ls /system/sd/app" and it said "No such file or directory"
What am I suppose to do to get it working?
Another question...
During the first system setup, it asked me if I want to install apps from Market bla bla bla I can't remember it exactly and I pressed Cancel and it came up again after I downloaded the first app from the Market, it asked if I want to install Facebook app, Gmail, Google apps etc. and let me check what app I want, again, I pressed Cancel. But now I want to install those apps and where can I run it?
I also applied the gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip right after I flashed the CM7 since I thought Google Apps will be installed. But there are no Google Apps installed on my device. Why? What apps are in the Google Apps package?
Thank you for reading my long thread and I appreciate all replies.
Update1: My GOD!! After rebooting my device for the first time, the notifications bar is GONE! I browsed through the ADWLauncher settings and still can't get it back. What on earth is going on?!?!
Update2: Looks like I '****ed the installation up a bit' like Meaple said. Now when there is an incoming call, the phone rings but nothing on the screen happened. I must press on the telephone icon and press 'Return to call in progress' (which will appear when there is a call) to get to the incoming call screen then I can swipe to pick up the call!! This is crazy.
Ok you do realise you got out all wrong. Firstly you only need 1 fat32 partition and 1ext partition only. Fat32 goes first. Secondly there is an app in the market called s2e which overalls the a2sd script for you and you can choose what goes on your sd card. Thirdly it sound like you ****ed the installation up a bit. Just do a complete fresh wipe.
If you read the cm7 post by kali you would understand.

- OK. How big should the EXT4 partition be?
- Thanks for recommending the S2E.
- Yes I think so. Actually at the S-OFF procedure there was a problem too. I posted in the AlphaRev's thread like this
hi, I'm trying to S-OFF my phone following this guide: [Video Tutorial] Noob Proof Everything Desire Guide UPDATED [04/04/11][Video Tut]
the process went well, I got the line said 'HBOOT flash: SUCCESS' then the next line said 'Flashing new bootblock: OK' and I stuck there for about half an hour. So I Googled it and found this on AlphaRev's site
Verify that the phone says: 'HBOOT flash: SUCCESS!' -> S-OFF is done.
You might get only a few more lines after that, such as "Flashing new bootblock: OK". This usually means the process got stuck
when the HBOOT flash is already done.
As long as you have the above 'HBOOT flash: SUCCESS' line on your screen, it is safe to pull the battery.
Boot into fastboot with to verify S-OFF (BACK+POWER).
You will need to restore at least your /boot image from your nandroid.

so I pulled the battery, disconnected the USB cable and turn on the phone in fastboot mode (Back+Power) to verify that it is now S-OFF'd and it is.
But I can't boot into Android. When I boot it normally, it just boot into fastboot. And I didn't do any nandroid backup.
Any ideas? Thanks

Then a user replied:
Reflash your ROM without wipe, and you should be fine!

but I'm flashing a fresh ROM so I wiped as in the Noob Proof guide showed.
Afterall my recovery is not a blue CWM-AlphaRev Recovery (like it should?) but still a normal green-CWM Recovery and the splash screen wasn't change to 'Why so Serious' picture. But I got S-OFF'd.
Is there anything to do with that?
update 2 is at the end of the first post. this is crazy.
one more question: everyone using CM7 will need to install S2E to use the A2SD?
If your phone "tells" you, you are s-off, be happy with it and do not wonder about a not fitting color of the cwm recovery and the not changed splash screen.

With installing s2e you cannot use a2sd. You can use a2sd if you have a fat32 and an ext3 or ext4 partition on your sd card. Now all apps, wether they are programmed for this or not, will be moved to sd card (as long as the flashed rom supports this). With the s2e you can manage which apps should be in phone's internal storage or on the ext partition.

Yes, it tells me that I'm S-OFF'd.
OK, drop all those weird problems. I wiped everything last night and flashed the CM7 again. No freaking problem so far. But after I flashed the Google Apps.zip, it said install success but nothing came after booting. And I don't know where I can get Gmail because I'm living in Germany and Gmail is not available in the Market. There is an Email app came with CM7, but I prefer to use Gmail.
About S2E, I asked in this thread:
hmm... i dont have any ideas. how can i get it work? I just want to install apps without worry! which option should i check?
i have a 1GB ext4 partition
thanks in advance

That should do the trick.

Just in case - my SD partitions are:
1st Partition FAT32 <the rest>
2nd Partition EXT4 <1000MB>
Partitioned by Gparted live CD
Thanks again

There can see, that the standard pathes for installing apps were changed to /system/sd. That means, a2sd+ is working.
Use the thanks button, when someone helped you.
thanks for the Gmail app
but after typing ls -l /data it returns NO /system/sd/app
how come??
I beg your pardon. I was wrong with the a2sd thing. To use a2sd with cm7, you need an ext partition on your sd card and one of these scripts:
simple2ext
CM7 Legacy App2SD Addon Script

It is already in the internal storage because I have 'Move to SD' option to select.
The big problem for now is: how to make A2SD to work?

Try to move it to sd (test if it starts) and then back to internal storage. If its's still not working, use another calendar app. Here i can higly recommend business calendar free:
https://market.android.com/details?id=netgenius.bizcal&feature=related_apps
If you used s2e correctly, a2sd is working. Maybe check again with the commands in conncetbot. You still have the option 'move to sd' in application settings, because this refers to the fat32 partiton on the sd card. In application settings android can only 'let you decide' between "internal storage" or "fat 32 partition of sd card". A2sd ist not integrated there, because it's so programmed that all apps you install will be moved automatically to sd card (ext partition); so manual moves are not necessary and senseless.

You need to reboot after configuring s2e. Did you do that? Do not wonder when it's take a long time, because all apps should be moved to sd ext.
Correctly partition your sd-card for extended memory use
Many users on this forum don't know how to partition their sd-cards correctly, resulting in later problems with ROMs, like lag issues, or data losses. This guide will help you partition your sd-card correctly.
There are several potential partitions where app-data can be installed to, usually the internal memory-partition is used for that. Unfortunately, the Desire's internal memory if only 147mb in size, and can only be increased by a maximum of 100mb with a hboot change. With apps increasing in size in the last few years, and devs not caring anymore about their app size, this small internal memory can't hold more than 10-20 relatively small apps.
Since Android 2.2 Froyo, users have been able to move part of the apps on the sd-card, but it's still not enough, with most of the data and dalvik cache filling up the internal memory. Therefore most custom ROMs incorporate an extension that allow additional partition on the sd-card to be used exclusively as an extension to the internal memory partition 'data', which is referrred to as 'sd-ext'.
----------------WARNING----------------
Everything on your sd-card will be wiped. Backup your sd-card before proceeding.
I do not take responsibility for anything that happens with your phone/ sd-card.
----------------INFO----------------
There are two methods to correctly create an ext partition on your sd-card. These are:
- 4ext Recovery method
This method requires you to be S-OFF, but it's the easiest one.
-Gparted method
This can be done, regardless of being S-OFF or not.
These two methods are the best ones to use. Other means could result in sd-card damaging, or other problems. Do not use:
ROM Manager, CWM Recovery, Windows Minitool Partition Wizard etc.
All you need for this process:
A 4ext recovery compatible phone ( for the 4ext method)
A Micro Sd-card.
A computer.
A writable CD (For Gparted Method)
A rom with init.d scripts support.
A brain.
----------------4ext Method----------------
This method consists in flashing a new recovery on your phone, and it requires you to be S-OFF.
If you aren't S-OFF, check this out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805811
Now. let's start.
[1] For Rooted ROMs
1. Go here: http://4ext.net/
2. Click on "4EXT Recovery Updater" and download the .apk.
3. Put the .apk on your sd-card.
4. Install the app, and open it.
5. Select "Online Install | upgrade". Confirm your phone model.
6. Select the latest "Touch" recovery, or "Classic", depending on your preferences.
[2] For ROMs that are not rooted (PB99IMG)
1. Go to this thread :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751258
2. Download the file: PB99IMG.zip
3. Place the file on the root of your sd-card (like... not in any folder)
4. Power off your phone
5. Boot in hboot (Power Down + Volume Down) or, if Vol Down is broken, in fastboot (Power Button + Back button) and select
"Bootloader".
6. Wait until a message appeares. Select yes.
[3] For ROMs that are not rooted (Fastboot)
This requires you to have ADB and Fastboot installed. Check out this guide : Long link
1. Download the PB99IMG from this thread :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751258
2. Extract the .img from inside the zip.
3. Put it on the the C:/ drive.
4. Boot your phone in fastboot (Power + Back button), then connect it to your PC.
5. Open CMD
6. Type "fastboot flash recovery C:/recovery.img"
Go to step [4]
[4] Partitioning your sd-card through recovery.
Now, you have installed 4ext recovery. We can continue.
1. Boot in recovery. (Power + Volume Down, then select "recovery")
2. Select "Tools".
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
3. Select "partition sd-card"
4. Select "Remove all partitions and start from scratch" (Hope you backed up your sd-card)
5. Select your sd-ext partition size. Recommended : minimum 512mb.
6. Skip sd-ext 2 (If asked for it)
7. Skip swap. (If the rom you want to install requires swap, then select 128 mb)
8. Choose Ext4 as your partition type. (Ext4 is faster than Ext3)
Voila, now you have an ext partition.
Skip to "Using the ext partition".
----------------Gparted Method----------------
1. Download gparted Live CD (.iso) from here: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php
2. Once downloaded, burn it on a CD using a burning software.
3. Connect your phone to your PC, and select "Hard Disk" mode.
3. Restart your computer and enter boot menu (usually by pressing F2/F12)
4. In boot menu change the boot order to bring your CD drive on the top, save settings and exit.
5. Restart your computer. You will get some options. Select the one that says to boot Gparted, or something like that.
6. Select your language by entering a given number.
7. You will next have 3 options. Type 0 and hit enter.
8. Now you should be booted in Gparted. You should see your sd-card info, together with your PC's partitions. Select your sd-card.
9. After selecting, you can see your sd-card on the main screen, along with partitions. Delete all partitions, for a clean start.
10. Right click on the "Unallocated space", and click "New"
11. A box will appear. First, create a Fat32 partition. Click the drop down box and select "Fat32". Now write in the "Free space following" box the size of your future ext partition, and, if the ROM you want to install requires a swap partition, add 30 mb to that value. (Example: 1024mb+30mb= 1054mb)
*In order for especially windows-systems being able to mount your sd-card when connecting your device to a pc, sd-ext should be following your first sd-card partition (typically Fat32). Like... create the Fat32 partition first.
12. Now you'll see 2 partitions. Right click on the unallocated one again, write 30mb in the "Free space following" box, then select what kind of partition you would like between Ext 2,3 or 4 ( 4 recommended).
13. Now, right click on the unallocated 30 mb, and create a "Linux swap" partition, just in case.(Optional, only of ROM requires swap)
14. Click "Apply".
15. On the top left of your screen you can see an icon named as exit/turn off, click on it. You now finished partitioning.
Video for better understanding:
And yes, now you may copy back your stuff. (Again, hope you backed up)
----------------Using the Ext partition----------------
After creating an ext partition, you have to actually use it. Most ROMs have a2sd scripts incorporated that use your ext automatically (check the ROM thread), but some ROMs don't, or you just want another type of a2sd scripts.
You can use the following a2sd scripts:
Mounts2sd app (Easiest method, kids!)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spazedog.mounts2sd&hl=en
Mounts2sd script
This is a script that lets you choose what you move to sd-ext.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342387
CronMod
Another set of scripts. Each one has a description. Read it carefully.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716124
Before flashing any scripts, remember to:
Do a nandroid backup
Delete any other a2sd scripts from the folder : /system/etc/init.d
Wipe cache and dalvik cache after installing a script.
Tip:
Unless you have a fast sd-card (Class 6 or Class 10), you should let your /data partition on your internal memory. Moving it to sd-ext could cause slowness. Move dalvik cache and system/app instead.
After you install one of these scripts, you can finally enjoy the extended memory of your phone.
Note: For most scripts, you will not see the actual ext partition as a memory extension (like, instead of 148 mb, you will not have 1148mb), but it will be there, doing its job.
To actually see your sd-ext, install a storage app, like this one : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.krikun.freespace.
----------------Problems?----------------
Still getting low memory warning?
1. Use the above suggested app to check your partition.
2. Are you using the correct hboot for your ROM?
3. Did you actually install a script? Did you configure it correctly (Mounts2sd)?
4. You may be having way too many apps, even for your extended memory. Uninstall some. Remember that memory is still limited.
5. Maybe your ROM doesn't support init.d scripts (needed for a2sd). Check out this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710980
6. If none of above work, start from the beginning, or use another method.

1 thing tho, regarding 5 and 6 using 4ext recovery.
5. Choose mb size for ext...ok
6. Skip swap...ok
In 4ext recovery, after choosing first partition size, it asks u to choose second partition size then swap size. So maybe should be...
5 - 512mb - 1.5gb
6 - Skip
7 - Skip
Done.
Very good guide tho, bout time someone wrote it. Good job

Weirdly enough, I partitioned an older 4 gb class 2 sd-card just to see step to step what happens, and 4 ext didn't ask for a second ext partition. Maybe the latest versions are this way.
Anyways, i made the modifications.
good stuff, very clear. should be made a sticky
few suggestions after also reading many Q&A threads:
- recommended size of partition
simply depends on how many apps users want to install, surprising how some users don't understand this.
- gparted section,
might as well link a video, always much easier to follow once you've seen it.
- using the ext partition
a lot of users expect their internal memory to read "internal + ext partition", when actually the partition is already in use without flashing any additional scripts. recommend first to check the ext partition is in use by installing various apps: diskusage, quick system info pro or titanium backup.
In many cases users won't have to 'use the move to sd' function, just keep apps on internal will trick apps to ext-partition. again this depends on the script, but can be checked as above.
when flashing different a2sd script, is it not necessary to delete the previous script first in /system/etc/init.d? not tried this myself but i would assume it may cause conflicts. definitely recommend nandroid backup and dalvik wipe before flashing any of these!
could also add a note to say that generally it is better to keep app data on the /data partition for stability and performance, unless they have fast sd card.
- add a "still getting low memory warning?" section?
use diskusage as suggested to check the partitions
make sure you are using the correct hboot for your rom (requires s-off), check the rom's system size using 7zip, or read each rom's OP or search within each thread for optimal hboot.
you may have too many apps, no matter which script you use there is still a limit. uninstall some apps you don't need
these aren't anything major, just fine tuning if you want to include

Yh it says at the top just below the status bar, its very small so alot of people probably dont see/notice it. Like when u press to "remove all partitions and start from scratch" then u choose, lets say 1024, the next part press skip, but when u press skip the screen doesnt change apart from the wee writing at the top so some people think when they pressed skip nothing happend so they press skip again then it partitions sdcard. Hope that makes sense lol
And yh like eddie said it should be made a sticky or atleast u could ask Mr.Mefisto to add it to his everything desire guide.
Il add it to my sig anyway if thats ok with u?

Like when u press to "remove all partitions and start from scratch" then u choose, lets say 1024, the next part press skip, but when u press skip the screen doesnt change apart from the wee writing at the top so some people think when they pressed skip nothing happend so they press skip again then it partitions sdcard. Hope that makes sense lol
And yh like eddie said it should be made a sticky or atleast u could ask Mr.Mefisto to add it to his everything desire guide.
Il add it to my sig anyway if thats ok with u?

one last thing i just spotted in gparted section steps 11 - 13:
just type free space following as the ext4 partition, briefly explain that ext4 is recommended as it should be slightly faster.
you can ask someone a bit more senior and with more knowledge to confirm, but i think you should remove the bit about swap, it's not necessary. It doesn't extend the memory in any way, in come cases can confuse the system. the custom rom would surely need a way to utilise swap, and most don't even bother afaik. you could in fact add a note to not include swap in case users were thinking about it.
another argument is that you instruct to skip swap in the 4ext recovery method, so should be consistent with gparted.

Hi, i took some screenshots of 4ext recovery while partitioning old sdcard. if u look at pic number 4 and 5 and look at the grey bar below status bar, it says "select a size for the first sd-ext partition" then on next pic it says "select a size for the 2nd sd-ext partition" then "select a size for the swap partition". Just thought id clear that up what i was on about yesterday anyway if u want u can use the pics for ur guide, just extract the zip file.

i think to be fair, when i first done mine back in november 2011 when i googled "how to partition sdcard" links with minitool seemed to pop up the most so i think people generaly go for that. but these days, if u search, 8/10 u will get to xda and 4ext so i dunno why they still choose it.
I made an ext3 partition using Gparted Livecd. But I couldn't make an ext4 one. Why? Maybe because i've a Class4 SD card?

I Recently installed a custom ROM "Mildwild based on Oxygen v4.9" to get rid of the annoying "Low memory" error. after installing i booted into 4ext recovery and parted sd-ext (1.5GB). After this i installed mounts2sd to move all application data and dalvik cache to sd-ext.
whole process went smoothly but now i see a new strange error of "memory card is not mounted or available".
i just see the contents of memory card through file manager but cant copy, delete any file.
any idea,whats going'on?
That Rom should already have a built in script to move apps and dalvik cache to sd, no need for mounts2sd.
You also need to be on cm7r2 hboot to maximise space.
My guess is that you moved app data to sd card which is best kept on internal for stability.
In your position try running mounts2sd again, but select only apps and dalvik. Then reboot into recovery and wipe dalvik cache.
If that doesn't work full wipe, change hboot of you haven't already, and install without mounts2sd
Rom has a script in it. You shouldn't have to install anything. It works automatically

yes I moved all apps data to sdext,
but there is no other way bcuz htc desire has only 255MB internal memory and after installing several apps it shows "low memory error" due to apps data in phone memory.
any other safe way to free up phone memory by moving apps data?

so you didnt set it up correctly. you are supposed to move the actual applications as they take up the most space, not app data.
have you tried what i suggested? are you also on cm7r2 hboot?
- run mounts2sd again
- select to move applications and dalvik cache (not data, keep data on internal)
- reboot into recovery and wipe dalvik, reboot and let it rebuilt on sd-ext.
if this doesn't work, then full wipe and reinstall without mounts2sd...as stated before, the rom has a built in script to automatically move apps and dalvik to sd-ext.
you can use another app like 'diskusage' to browse your partitions after everything it set up correctly.

you didnt answer my other query. i believe you are still on stock hboot? previously you said 255MB now you say 144MB, you need to make up your mind (if you haven't changed hboot then you are still on stock hboot)
nandroid backup, then switch to cm7r2 hboot, search for guides on how to flash them, recommend through fastboot.
this will give you 287MB of internal memory which will be able to store a lot more. if you still need space, one way i know is through titanium backup, you can long press on an app and select "move app data to sd", you can do this for individual apps.
you might as well use most of your internal memory for most app data because it's generally faster and more stable. use sd-ext for apps and dalvik. there's also no point in keeping your internal memory completely empty, it's there to be used:good:
this should solve your 'low internal memory' part, not sure if this will fix your read only errors actually. i hope it's not a bad sd card after all this!

You will need s-off to do this:
1. Go to http://alpharev.nl/ and download the PB99IMG for the cm7r2 hboot.
2. Once it has downloaded, rename it to PB99IMG and put it on the root of your sd card (not in any folders)
3. Boot into hboot(volume down + power). Wait a bit while it searches for the file
4. When it finds the file it will ask if you want to install. Press volume up to install. The reboot.

Hello evryone.I got the Desire today and I would very much like to do root on my phone.I'm a total novice about all this and I'd like to ask someone for help. When I go in the boot menu (volume down+power) i have this:
-Revolutionary
BRAVO PVT3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MICROP-051d
TOUCH PANEL-SYN0101
RADIO-5.17.05.23
Aug 10 2010
HBOOT
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
Can someone suggest where to find a tutorial step by step how to do root on my phone because I'm a total beginner?
Thanks.
Well it looks like all the hard parts have been taken care of already. The rest is a piece of cake
Revolutionary was used to s-off, which probably means that you have a custom recovery install as well.
Use volume down while in the bootloader to scroll down to RECOVERY. Then use power to select it. When the recovery boots up you should have either cwm (clockworkmod) or 4ext recovery installed. Tell me which one you have so that i can give you some more guidance.
I'm afraid that nothing of what you have said I do not have. When I select a recovery nothing happens,On the next screen I see icon of phone on the middle of the screen and two circular arrow. One point down and another point up,and then red tringle with an exclamation point in the middle.I tried several times and always the same.Is this serious problem?

Then you need to flash a recovery. Either through fastboot, or through the PB99img method.
Fastboot implies installing fastboot, adb and hboot drivers on your PC, downloading the recovery.img, and then using the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img".
The PB99IMG.zip is a bit easier. Follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751258

Yep, thats pretty much correct. You go into the bootloader, wait a couple seconds and it should find the PB99IMG.zip that you placed on the root of your sdcard automatically. Then you press volume up to confirm the install, and then reboot. Go back into the bootloader and select recovery and you should now have 4ext recovery.
Forget about the fastboot command. That is just another method of installing 4ext, but its a bit more work. Since youre using the PB99IMG method you dont have to do this.
Once youre in recovery you have a few options:
Boring option- You can simply flash a root zip which will give you root access on the stock rom
Fun option- You can pick out a custom rom from the development section and flash it. Custom roms come prerooted, and have so many other advantages over stock. (Performance, a2sd for gaining more space for apps, battery life, customization, etc.)

Well anything over android 4+ wont run ideally on the desire.
My favorite stable rom is milwild's redux. You need to do a couple things before flashing to optimize your space usage. First create a 1GB ext4 partition using this guide. Then go here and download the PB99IMG_oxygenr2 zip. This is an hboot and will change the layout of the internal partition to maximize the amount of space for apps and app data. After youve downloaded it, rename it to PB99IMG.zip, and put it on the root of your sdcard. Then you go into the bootloader and install it the same way you did for 4ext. After that you go into 4ext, go to the wipe menu and choose "format all partitions (except sdcard)". Finally go to install zip from sdcard, select the rom i recommended above and flash it.
I have to admit that Gparted method for partitioning sd card somehow easiest for me.Again I have a few questions before I start my adventure installing milwild's redux ROM.

I did half the job, now the hard part remains.I installed 4EXT recovery and partitioned SD Card but not completely.I did everything like in the tutorial, but the internal memory is not increased. Here's a picture after finishing operations.

The storage that it shows in settings will not show the space on your ext partition. But don't worry, its working. You can download an app such as titanium backup which will show you the amount of space on your ext partition. If you're skeptical, try installing a few apps from the play store. If you're not getting any low memory errors you are good to go.

Try partitioning with 4ext. Also you should really switch to oxygenr2 hboot...with stock hboot you are wasting a ton of space on the system partition.

You still don't understand what has been explained before
Your internal memory will not read 'internal + sd-ext' because that's just the way the script works.
As long as the sd-card has been correctly partitioned, the A2SD script should work automatically. (you probably didn't need to use 4EXT if you follow the gparted guide exactly, but doesn't matter now)
Keep apps on internal i.e. don't 'Move to SD', and it will trick the apps apks and dalvik cache to sd-ext. You internal memory (/data) will fill up with app data (e.g. just the saved games). Another way to check is to install another app like 'diskusage', it will allow you to browse your partitions.
What is limiting you is that you are still on stock hboot. You should change to OxygenR2 hboot as advised. Currently on stock hboot your /system size is 250MB, but you're using only around ~95MB, wasting over 150MB.
If you switch to OxygenR2 hboot, the system size is 100MB, you'll waste only 5MB, and the rest gets converted to extra internal memory...total 332MB instead of 147MB...i.e. more space for apps
You should now
-nandroid backup
-flash oxygenR2 hboot, either by PB99IMG.zip method as advised, or using fastboot (search for guides)
-reboot back into recovery, full wipe and nandroid restore.
If not, can you explain to me how to do root to my phone?

You should try to work out why it might be slow in the first place.
Are you using an sd partition for A2SD? How did you create the partition? Any other scripts?
If you want to simply reinstall the ROM, you can:
- make a nandroid backup just in case
- flash the ROM.zip straight over the top, no wipe
This may clean things a little on your /system partition, and you shouldn't lose your apps.
If you "wipe data / factory reset" within cwm, and do nothing afterwards, this will wipe the ROM and it will not boot as you won't have any OS.
You can reflash the ROM.zip after "wipe data / factory reset", this is simply a full wipe and reinstall from scratch. Make sure you have a nandroid, backed up your contacts to google, and a titanium backup of your apps etc before you try this.

Despite this being repeated millions of times in xda, it rarely ever actually solves anything. cache is just temporary files. dalvik is required for apps to function. after you wipe it, it simply rebuilds, which is why it takes so long to boot afterwards...
In other words don't bother wiping dalvik...save yourself the time.
Thanks for the help.
It's probably getting slow because I run most apps via A2SD .. Cant really remember how i created the partition back then, it's more than a year ago now...don't think i use other scripts.
I don't use this phone that much anymore, but i wanted to have a backup phone in case my newer one gets broken or something, therefore i wanted to do a clean install on this one.
So if i flash the ROM straight over this one, without wiping, i still got al my personal data on the phone ?
Does a Nandroid backup also backs up the apps ? Cause when i reinstall this backup it probably gets slow again right ?
Is there a way to backup only the system settings from the ROM, so that when i do a full wipe , reinstall the same ROM again, i can restore the changes i made in this ROM ?
Thanks.

You're supposed to run all your user installed apps via A2SD, that's why you rooted and partitioned your sd card in the first place. Otherwise you run out of space again

If you can't remember how you did it, then there's a chance you did it wrongly. It should be done with 4EXT recovery or gparted only, not clockworkmod recovery or minitool partition wizard. You mention clockworkmod recovery, so I assume you are also still S-ON?

To be honest, these are kind of basics you should know before you try anything with your phone A nandroid backup is a backup of everything. When you restore it, it should be exactly the same: apps, settings, texts, home screens etc.
You should be making a nandroid backup before you wipe / install anything unless you know exactly what you're doing, as it is a safe point to restore to if anything goes wrong. You can even move them off your sdcard to PC or cloud storage to save space and for safekeeping (normally stored in the /clockworkmod folder)
You can backup anything you like with apps like Titanium Backup. It is best used for your normal apps and app data. You can backup and restore /system apps and data, but this is very risky and I don't recommend it.
Personally I would recommend a full wipe and restore, setting everything up properly from the start as it should have been done in the first place. I'm assuming you're still S-ON:
- Install Titanium Backup, backup all your user apps and data (not system apps)
- Make sure your contacts are backed up to your Google account, backup SMS if you need to with another app
- Backup your whole sdcard to PC
- S-OFF with revolutionary
- Flash cm7r2 hboot using fastboot, this will optimise your actual internal memory more efficiently.
- Flash 4EXT recovery using fastboot
- Reformat your sdcard in 4EXT, partition with maximum 2GB ext4 partition, no swap
- Copy your sd card backup back
- Full wipe (wipe all partitions except sdcard)
- Flash ROM.zip
- Restore user apps + data with Titanium
Hey Eddie,
Thanks for you answer, really appreciate it.
I installed the custom rom on my phone more than a year ago, and back then i was really into it, now most of the details i forgot..
But it's S-OFF for sure, and i installed HBOOT also..i can't really remember how i formatted the SD card, is there a way to find that out ?
I will probably just install the same rom again, but first do a full wipe like you advised. Then it probably will work as smooth as it did in the beginning when i installed this ROM for the first time..
Do i need to reformat the SD-card again then, or is only a wipe enough?
Also, when installing apps, i now move them to SD card via the 'apps' menu -> move to SD , is that the right way to do it ? Or is there some other method ?

S-OFF means you unlocked the bootloader, it's a good start but nothing more. Explain 'installed HBOOT', did you already actually flash a different hboot? Write what is says on top of your bootloader screen. If it just says 'Alpharev', means you are actually still on stock hboot.
Like I said, if you can't remember how you partitioned your sdcard, you may have done it wrongly. Please reformat it from scratch as advised.

Reformat your sdcard from the start, do it the right way so you know you've done it the right way, rather than be uncertain...then follow instructions as above.
Roms like Mildwild have A2SD built in, you only need to keep apps on 'internal' to trick them to your sd-ext partition. 'Move to SD' is redundant, and moves part of the app to the FAT32 partition of your sd card. A2SD moves all of the app apk (and dalvik cache if you choose to), to the sd-ext which is where you want.
Other ROMs you need to activate A2SD manually, read the first post. Same rule still applies, don't use 'Move to SD', because if you do, you are not actually using your sd-ext partition...
Some ROMs like MildWild are also better installed on smaller hboots like cm7r2 to use your internal memory more efficiently (stock hboot is wasteful). Again instructions should be given in the first post of each ROM.

When i boot up in bootloader it says:
- revolutionary -
S-off
Hboot-6.93.1002
Radio etc..
Repartitioning is probably not necassery because i already think i did, but maybe do it again then..
A2SD:
This is what i did wrong all the time..i moved them to SD card via 'apps' in settings'..maybe this is why it got a little slower by time.
However i cant find any app called A2SD or is this a script that runs automatically ?
When i check the app 'freespace' it says : internal, microSD, Sd-ext, system.
thanks

Its a script so if your apps are on internal it will automatically trick them to move them to your sd ext which is the partition you have made which is 1gb recommended...

No, for the third time...
You think you already did it, and you have no idea how you did it...
Therefore: it is most likely is that you haven't done it, or you 've done it incorrectly.
If you've done it using clockworkmod recovery or minitool, they make bad partitions. It could be the exact reason you're having these slowdowns in the first place
You should do it with 4EXT recovery or gparted ONLY, nothing else. If neither sound familiar, then this increases your chances further that you have partitioned incorrectly...

Have a look again at freespace. You see all that free empty space on your /system partition? This is completely wasted redundant space.
You have exactly the same internal memory layout as before you rooted / S-OFF. With S-OFF you can change your actual internal memory layout by flashing a different hboot, see alpharev.nl.
By flashing a different hboot, you reduce your /system and /cache size -> and therefore increase your /data size (internal memory) = more space for apps :good: This is probably why you rooted in the first place...
So I believe you have narrowed it down to two choices:
- Keep full wiping...and never understand what you're doing...
- Follow the instructions and try to learn what you're doing and how your memory is actually being used Set everything up from scratch. It is the only way to guarantee you have a proper setup.
Up to you

Hi Eddy,
Finally I got the time to set up everything properly on my (new) Htc Desire, cause i lost my old one
Here is what i've done so far:
- Got it Rooted via the method advised here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275632
- Then I S-Offed with Revolutionary script, and installed CWM 5.0.2.0 .. not really what you advised me but i wanted to test if it was working, cause i had this recovery on my old phone also.
- Then I flashed cm7r2 hboot using Android Flasher. Could not get it to work via CMD->Fastboot on windows.
- Now i end up with a boot loop, only giving me the white HTC screen. When booting up in Hboot, it says:
AlphaRev CM7 r2
S-Off
HBoot-6.93.1002
I can enter CWM recovery, but it gives me some errors like 'E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
And like i said: booting normally it ends up in a bootloop.
Did i do anything wrong, and what s the best way to move on now ?
Thanks in advance.

When u change hboot u have perform full wipe then reflash rom or restore nandroid backup. So in recovery wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache then reboot recovery then flash rom or restore nandroid backup if u have one.
Also ul prob need to partition ur sdcard for a2sd in roms so u must use 4ext recovery or gparted only. So again, flash 4ext recovery.

Ok thats clear, thanks for your reply.
I'd like to install 4Ext recovery, but it seems installing this recovery is done a little different from other recoveries right ?
Cause on their website it's done via an app frome the market..
Should i install a new rom first, then install 4Ext recovery ? Or can i flash 4Ext recovery from a zipfile in clockworkmod recovery ?

Installed it , and am trying to re-partition my SD-card (8 Gb) in the 4Ext recovery mode.
I followed this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2125513
Set 1st sd-ext partition to 2048 mb, skipped second, and skipped swap.
But then i get the message:
You new partiotion table would look like this:
Fat32: 5580 mb
SD-ext: 2048MB
Is that correct ? Shouldn't be all the memory on the SD-card partitioned to SD-ext ?

I thought that the whole SD-card would be partitioned as 4ext.
Is it true that A2SD now only uses the 4Ext partition (2gb) to trick apps to ?
Anyway, i'm happy to have my desire now set-up properly, so thanks for your help
I tried 2 Mildwild roms already, but didn't find a way to encrypt SD-card within these roms , does anybody knows if that's possible somehow ?
Any suggestions for other (Mildwild) Roms ? (tried MildWild MW-14 and MildWild CM-8.0 JG Stable)
Thanks.
