Why is Nexus 7 2013 not in the compatibility list of leef and pqi micro usb drives

IIRC, a stock, out-of-the-box, N7 can not use any USB drives. It requires helper apps, like Stickmount, which usually require, at a minimum, rooting the device. My understanding is that Nexus Media Importer (available as a paid app in the Google Store) does not need root. I have not tried it personally, though.

Thank you for the response.
I have taken a regular usb drive, connected with a micro usb OTG cable to the drive and used "Nexus Media Importer" and it works. My question is if I were to take one of these new Leaf or PQI drives which already have a micro usb connector and stick it into my Nexus and use the "Nexus Media Importer" will it also work? And if so why have Leaf and PQI not mentioned Nexus 7 2013 in there list?
It could be that they have not tested these drives against Nexus 7. So before I bought it I wanted to know if some one in this forum had already tested it and it had worked.

I suspect that it will work and they haven't tested them with the N7. That said, I've never used one so I can't be certain.

[Q] External Hard Drive???

Is it possible to connect an external hard drive through an OTG cable?? If so would it have to be a hard drive that can be powered through 1 usb cable
Yes it's certainly possible.

Skip to 1:04 where he starts testing hard drives. First a USB powered 250GB model, and after that a 2TB disk with its own power supply. Both work.

Another option, which I have done with my Xoom2 tab, and which should work with the Note 2...is to use a main-powered USB hub, then you can connect as many USB devices as you like, all at the same time.
At one point I had a camera, keyboard, mouse, usb stick and external drive all connected and all working...I have used an SD card reader as well =]
Just plug in the hub through the OTG, then everything else in to the hub...job done!

I've managed to successfully connect drives up to & including 64gb, but not higher (it claims 'external drive is corrupted' - but drive works fine in all PCs etc.). It may be dependent on the format of the external drive.

It does indeed...needs to be formatted in FAT32 I believe, I'm not sure if it will recognise NTFS.
I use Swissknife, it lets you format big drives e.g. 500GB in FAT32 =]
That should let you use it with the OTG cable.
It will recognise hard drives formatted to exfat, as long as they are independantly powered - no file size limitation.
It works with thumb drives, so I would assume also hdd: paragon ntfs. Free in the app store, requres root.

Has anyone tried a 128 GB thumbdrive?
I am thinking about buying one in order to store movies and then share it between the Note 2 and a Nexus 10 (perhaps). Since I found Mizuu, it has been really interesting to carry a big movie library for travelling and access them through a nice interface.

Use USB OTG for music and movies?

How do i use a usb otg cable with a flash drive to listen to music or watch movies? Can you do this?
OTG storage was confirmed to work on another thread. I haven't tested it out with my cable, but you may need Stickmount or similar (if so, you will need root). You will also need a third party player to play other media.
Another possibility is to create a "file bridge" or similar to make the stock player see the media on the external storage. This was a little difficult to do at first on 4.2 with the introduction of multi-user, but someone may have found a way around it. Something to research.

A regular USB flash drive should need no additional power, I have yet to find one that can't be used with the OTG cable due to power requirements.

Hi:
I've been using Nexus Media Importer on my stock, non-rooted, Nexus 7 2012 for almost a year. It also works flawlessly on my stock, non-rooted, Nexus 7 2013. I wish people would STOP saying OTG use requires root.

Well, I tried Nexus Media Importer without root and it didn't work for me. If you follow NMI troubleshooting links you will find that the author has found that it is very problematic with Android 4.3. He claims he has found a macarena-like workaround but I couldn't get it to work for me.
I will try rooting and stickmount tonight.

Hi:
I am sorry that you are having problems with Nexus Media Importer. The author did not say that NMI was very problematic with 4.3. He said that a few people were having random problems with 4.3. Aside from you, looking at reviews on the play store, there were no reviews that couldn't be straightened out with the work around. I support six other Nexus 7 owners and none of us ever had any problems nor had to use any work arounds on 4.22 nor 4.3. Again, you may have been one of the few with a problem but looking at play store reviews and the many, many reports on this forum with 4.3, Nexus Media Importer works with OTG on stock Nexus 7 tablets.
It streams and copies with NTFS and does the same and writes with Fat32. It does not support exfat.
I have an extensive section on Nexus Media Importer in my Nexus 7 guide:

Hope that rooting works out for you.

Apparently I am not the only one to have this difficulty. It's great that you have had a different experience, I wish mine was that way.
This issue was with the 2013 Nexus 7. I had no problems with the 2012 version. Based on your comments about version 4.2.2 (which the 2013 version never shipped with) I wonder if your experiences are based on 2012 hardware?
Here is a quote from the developer's site "It appears that the Android 4.3 update broke the USB Host on some Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 2nd gen. devices. In Nexus Media Importer and Nexus Photo Viewer, these appear in the Connect screen as "Protected". It does not appear to affect a particular model, but devices at random. The issue has been reported to Google via the link below:"
You can find this at: http://nexususb.blogspot.com/2013/07/android-4.html along with his workaround (which requires multiple reboots so I view the workaround as macarena-like, certainly not a straightforward method)

Hi:
You are indeed not the only one having the problem but I still say the majority of users are not having any problems. Nonetheless, it's not very useful for me to say, "It works for me and not for you--nyah, nyah, nyah." So, let me say what works for me instead. All testing was done on a Nexus 7 2013, today. All flash drives were formatted with Fat32.
First of all, make sure you have write enabled in advanced preferences. If not, all flash drives will show up as Protected.
There are four variables, the OTG cable, adapters, the flash drive/sd card and the tablet.
We know that Asus production is uneven. As an owner of the TF101, 201, Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 7 2013. I've been lucky to receive tablets without production defects but there are many folks who have been unlucky.
My OTG cables all come from the following vendor:
SANOXY Micro USB Host Mode OTG Cable $1.50
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FUNYSA/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use this Microsd Adaptor:
C2662 Black Micro SD SDHC TF USB card Reader Adapter Support 32GB Mini Hi-Speed $4.98
http://www.ebay.com/itm/C2662-Black...pter-Support-32GB-Mini-Hi-Speed-/200731336666
I use this flash drive as it's small and doesn't weigh down the OTG cable:
SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 32GB USB Flash Drive (SDCZ33-032G-B35) $21.49
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00812F7O8/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have a couple of Sandisk 64gb Microsd Class 6 cards formatted to NTFS, not useful as they are no longer for sale.
I tested my friend's SanDisk Class 10 Ultra 64gb MicroSD XC I, formatted with great difficulty to Fat32. Sandisk Class 10 cards have a hidden partition, only come formatted with exfat, are difficult to format to fat32--designed incompatibility. I am done with Sandisk MicroSd cards. Instead I recommend
Kingston Digital 64GB MicroSDXC Class 10 Flash Card (SDCX10/64GB) $59.99
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-64GB-MicroSDXC-SDCX10/dp/B009X0G304/ref=sr_1_1
In addition to the above, I tested it with several SanDisk cruzer usb drives, 16 and 32, a four gig PNY flash drive and even an odd fish-shaped flash drive that my friend had trouble reading on some laptops.
All of the Microsd cards worked, the NTFS cards worked with copying streaming, not write. All of the flash drives worked with write. None showed up as protected.

Glad we are not engaging in a tit-for-a-tat exchange. The OTB cable I had worked with my 2012 N7. I will order the one you used and see if that is any different.
Mike
UPDATE: I ordered one but it looks just like the one I have.
I noticed one problem with stickmount and videos: Apparently something gets a little too sleepy when the tablet sleeps. I was using a nightly build of VLC, and paused the video playback for about 10 minutes, when I woke up the tablet and it tried to resume, it couldn't do it. I tried the same video and pause after copying the file to the /sdcard, and the resume from pause worked fine. Definitely an obscure case, but there was a difference with OTG.

I've been scouring the internet looking for an answer about USB host mode on the 2013 Nexus 7 as well, and I can't find anything about it, other than one stray comment on the Google Play store saying that it does not. I'm still hoping that it will though. I ordered two of them at work, they will be here on Tuesday. I'll try a USB device on one of them first thing, and I will let you know.
If the 2013 Nexus 7 doesn't have host mode, I'll be sticking with a 2012 Nexus 7. That's a dealbreaker for me.
Nexus Media Importer is supposed to work. Otherwise rooting and using an app like Stickmount will give you full functionality.
Same situation with Gen1 Nexus 7.
Got my hands on one. An Apple USB keyboard and USB flash drive works, a USB mouse did not. By default it provides 8 mA, and the Apple keyboard drew 80 mA.
This should work. It's an MicroUSB OTG cable (It came with an Android Stick), and attached to it is one of the little USB MicroSD card readers that are often included when you buy the SD Card.
(The card is shown pulled out from the reader).
I cannot verify that it works, because I just got my N7(2013) tonight, and I have not yet rooted or installed Nexus Media Importer.
For right now, I stuck my old tablet's card in the Micro-reader, and stuck the micro reader in the USB port on my NAS, and I am pulling everything back down with ES File.
I'll try mounting OTG Storage - perhaps from the command line, once I get some time to play with this thing.

How's the drive formatted? I imagine here's a good chance a 64GB flash drive will be formatted with exFAT, which stock Android can't deal with.
(That said, I have a 64GB drive here which came formatted with FAT32... and no tablet to plug it into yet...)

The 32gb that works and the 64gb that does not work are both formatted with NTFS. I can't use FAT32 because of the file size restrictions.

If the USB drive is not mounting then try these:
- USB OTG Helper
- StickMount
Both mounting apps and the stock mounting method mount the USB drive at different paths.
Try for the replies can you give me some link to buy one from amazon stable since I don't have idea

I use these, and their international shipping might cover Greece. Pair them with a small flash drive like the Sandisk Cruzer Fit, and it's like a standard-size thumb drive.

I tried all the recommended apps, nothing seems to detect the USB stick mounted. I know the USB stick and cable works, because when I reboot into recovery I can back up and restore from otg USB.
What else can I do to figure out why I can't mount the otg USB?

Fixed!!! I finally got otg working!!!
So here's what I did. I'm running cm11. I flashed elementalx kernel but one thing I did different was I did NOT enable usb fast charge.
So from what it seems if you have USB fast charge otg doesn't work!
I hope this helps others...

If you have problems with otg and a custom rom you can flash the Bulletproof kernel.
Since there has been no mention of drives I'll add some info.
I can use otg with 2.5 inch drives without external power. (both fat32 and ntfs formats). 3.5 inch drives require external power.
I use stickmount pro (requires root).
I'm running stock firmware and kernel. - KOT49H

Not working for me on Nexus 7(2013)...having 4.4.2/KOT49H with Bulletproof kernel and fastcharge disabled.
OTG trouble shooter shows all good, but EZ Explorer do not show my USB disk, and keyboard/mouse also do not work.
Same cable and keyboard/mouse works on SGS3
ASUS support replied that my device do not support OTG ...its Nexus 7 2013 WiFi 16 GB model

To get drives to work I had to install stickmount pro but mice and keyboards do not need any extras. *Here is the cable I use. *I retested my setup and everything works as previously described. - Nexus 7 (2013) 32gig. *I'm running the stock kernel but with custom roms I use Bulletproof kernel.
I'm guessing you mean ES Explorer as I can't find EZ Explorer. *It works for me mounted as usbStorage/sda1 using ES Explorer, etc.
Note: stickmount requires some extras placed in your sdcard root.

Does this thing accept USB OTG?

I'm interested in getting this tablet to replace my laptop while traveling. I need to somehow download microSD cards full of pictures taken from my DSLR into an external 2.5" USB drive. Can somebody verify that this tablet supports OTG and if so then it has enough juice for a 2.5" hard drive (or SSD)?
Thanks.
I was unable to get OTG to work.

All my recemt Samsung devices have supported OTG, so no reason why this one shouldn't.

You can use Total Commander and the USB plug in for it and it works fine and without root.
Otg working fine for me with mouse, keyboard, ps4 controller.
Stickmount Pro works the best in my opinion and allows you to use your favorite root explorer. Just create a shortcut to your home screen and when Stickmount mounts your micro drive all you have to do then is open the home screen shortcut

Hi, yes it does, I have used it on my tab s 10.1
I'm about to order a 10.5 LTE version but need confirmation that OTG is working.
Does it give enough power to get a 500GB HDD spinning up and running? Or will I need an external power source?
Many thanks in advance

No, a regular Western Digital "My Passport" USB HDD.
My Nexus 5 provides enough power without needing a y-cable/external power. But thats probably because it has a snapdragon 800 chipset.
The Tab S uses an Exynos 5 so I'm worried it won't be able to power up the drive.
Anyone tried a USB HDD with the tab S?
Many thanks in advance
Can't get my hdd to work on the t805 weird thought because my g3 can power it.
Galaxy Tab S 10.5 USB OTG works with my 32gb PNY flash drive. I formatted it first in FAT 32 and my drive was recognised instantly. You can double check if it is recognised under the 'storage' option in settings, then in the USB OTG storage tab.
Then i reformatted it in exFAT on my computer and it still works perfectly. It was instantly recognised upon plugging it into the tablet.
The USB OTB cable (micro usb to female usb) I used was a cheap generic ebay one which does the job. So yes, this device does support USB OTG natively (though I haven't tried NTFS format yet).

This post was from 2014. Is your OTG still working? Mine was working up until about a year ago and now it doesn't work. I am on version 6.0.1 with the SM-T705, not rooted. I have tried using the Total Commander with USB plug in, but the tablet doesn't recognize the 16 GB USB drive at all. Any other suggestions?
