I currently have the Galaxy Note 10.1, which currently has most of the features that the Note II already has, and soon to get more whenever they roll out JB.
I quite like the Note 10.1 and think that the Note II is quite a nice piece of equipment. But, I have this overwhelming feeling that the Note II's features will be redundant considering I have the tablet. That, or it'd make my tablet a bit useless, depends on how you look at it.
So, my question is, do you guys think I should buy the Galaxy Note II or the Galaxy S III? I also seen that the new LG Nexus 4 is quite nice, but with the flaw of not having expandable storage from what I've been able to gather. Or, do you guys have any phones that you would recommend that's pretty high end and expected to be good? I'm not buying my phone for at least a month, so I'm starting my research now.
The Note 2 is a perfect combination of a phone and a tablet. You can utilize it for both purposes easily. I strongly recommend it.

Thank you for your recommendation. I'm going to do more digging into the phones to see what would be the best for me. But I'm unfortunately one of those techies that like my equipment to be high end and very pretty..
Question is really.. what do you do on your phone? watch movies? alot of web browsing?
i love my note 2 cos i do just that.. watch movies, listen to music, surf on the web reading news, forums.
couldnt live with anything smaller now. and me and my G/F use the pen daily.
if you like the Note 10.1 i think you cant go wrong with note 2 if you can stand the size

Well, on my current phone (Galaxy W CM9 Beta 1) I used to do a lot of web browsing, but, my current phone right now isn't playing very nice with me and Dolphin. I tend to do a lot of texting, as well. If I have the time in college or out and about I may watch a few things, depending on battery. It does seem like a brilliant choice. But, the 5.5 inches does sound rather insane! But the pen does come in handy a great deal. The Note II is the top contender for me, right now. No other phone even amounts to how amazing it is to me.
Note 2 is simply the best phone yet. And size is really good. Felt like it was designed for me after several hours of use. And the battery is so goood

Well, I think it's decided! Thank you guys. I really do need something with good battery. I was worried that with the massive screen and overwhelming processor that the poor wee battery wouldn't be able to cope! The Galaxy W has terrible battery life when the data is active, which is something I tend to use a lot.
the size is huge but you get used to it, and i gotta say i love the pen for writing notes you can have a small notepad pop up every time you remove the pen im not a huge fan of onscreen keyboards and writing with the pen is very comfortable with almost no lag on the input.
was in the hospital for 4 days and the note 1 phone saved me with its huge screen, i watched youtube and movies and never felt the screen beeing to small or got eyestrain from its size.
Battery time is amazing on the note 2 also. about 8 hours watching movies twice what the first note could do, and the same the iphone 5 can do
ive seen some reports of even 10 hours watching movies
i dont see my phone as large any more, its normal its the other phones thats small.. smartphones should be about 5" with all this CPU power!
You should buy the note 2 because there is no other phone on the market now that can perform better than it benchmark test prove that.

I'm betting the note 2 is going to make your tablet redundant and not the other way around. You'd probably find yourself using the phone more than the tablet because how much easier it is to hold on to and take with you on the go.
Tablet functions on a phone that fits into my pocket? Yes, please.
My advice, sell the note 10.1 before the value goes down too much if you plan to get the note 2.

See, I use the tablet for note taking in college. Well, that's what I bought it for, at least. It arrived as my classes got to the point where I wasn't getting taught anything. So that's on hold for a month or so. I also use it for organisation with the calender for things such as college assessments and important dates. So I'd have the calender synced on both devices, which might increase productivity. I'm using it for app creation, whenever I get back into it, too. It's also used for when I need to use stuff like remote desktop, or take it out with me for when I go to fix up computers, or do work on my own, as well as general web browsing. And I use it for guitar, as well. One of the best uses I've found for it!

After looking at your list it would still seem the note 10.1 is a waste. I'm a programmer as well but not a musician. A laptop note 2 combo should beat out a note 2, note 10.1 combo for school related task by a long shot and both could sink to Google calendar. As a programmer I would hate to be stuck with all my devices running a mobile OS not to mention the added weight I would be force to endure from carrying all those devices. When fixing pc's I want the fastest and easiest to use device possible and there the note 2 would again beat out the 10.1 and not mention since it is a phone we'd always be carrying it.
It seems like the only real area it would shine is the musician route for your guitar and for that it seems overpriced. Of course this is all my opinion so please don't take any offensive to it.
If you get the note 2 you will end up selling the note 10.1... I own a note 1 (waiting for my note 2 to arrive) and I had a galaxy tab 10.1 p7500.. I bought my tab back when I had a gnexus and was very useful but since I got the note 1, I didn't use my tab at all so I've sold it because it was just a dust collector...

I see where you're coming from, and I'm happy with your input. The Note 10.1 is brilliant for college related stuff because I have a desktop, meaning with my Note 10.1 I'm able to sit downstairs to study. It's also great for college because of how light weight it is. I just pop it in my bag and off I go. The way I use it is quite productive, for me. When fixing PC's it's normally so that I can have certain things up on the screen such as instructions, videos and what not, meaning the bigger screen is still more efficient. I normally have my bag with me when fixing PC's so it's again, on my person and easily carried. I went with the Note 10.1 over a laptop because of 1.) It's lighter 2.) Faster to boot up and operate, since everything in android is small (for the most part) and 3.) A laptop would be a waste, considering I have a high-end desktop. I did plan out what I needed before making the decision of getting one. As a programmer, though.. I work on Visual Studio for college and my own C# projects, but with Android - when I go to learn to develop on it - I will be programming with a mixture of AIDE and Eclipse. AIDE is an APK in android that lets you design apps straight from your device, then build and test them, too. It also syncs with your workspace for on the go.
But, I do thank you for your honesty. My set up is ideal for me, so far. Just that my phones a bit rubbish because of the lack of ram. I still need to look more into what is out there. Money is a bit of a factor so if I can get something that's pretty great with a lower price tag I'll probably jump on it.

very helpfull thread after reading through this thread i think i am gonna buy not 2 only i have this old galaxy S which i think needs a replacement :cyclops: few days back i saw this galaxy note 2 in a show room since then i doubted whether to buy such a big phone or not but now i think i will buy it as soon as i collect enough resources i mainly use android phones to play games

If you want an android phone for gaming I'd recommend a T3 device like the HTC One X+. T3 has exclusive THD games however Gameloft games don't work as well as not optimised properly for T3.
None the less GN2 is still packing some gaming power behind it.
A simple answer to your question is. If you are buying a smart phone now, than buy Note 2. Why settle for something less, when the next big thing is already here. Lol

I'm a big fan of Android, and I've been always working in Java, so the programming transition is kinda easy, I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and I really like it, however, I always think on getting an Android tablet, something not expensive, 7'' with ICS 4.0 and above, but...would yo recommend to get a tablet if you already an Android phone with a "big" screen? I mean, I use my phone for mails, social network, utitilies, I have two minor apps developed for it, so I use it as a testing device as well, what do you think, isn't too repetitive to have both? I need some advices, I want a tablet, but I wouldn't end it up leaving it there doing nothing after a while, thanks!
If you feel you want a 7" tablet, i recommend you to buy the Nexus 7. Or you could just wait until a new Nexus 7 released which had been rumored coming next week in 24th July. It will have fast Android updates directly from Google. However, if you felt like 7" is small for you, you can buy the Nexus 10 or Asus Transformer Infinity. Both of them have a high range specs.

The question is because I'd like to buy a non expensive tablet, I'm not looking for anything with the latest specs, but want to know if some of you, who has a Note 2 and also a tablet, feel like both are being used in a regular way, I wouldn't like to buy a tablet and then leave it there doing nothing, I know that every person is different, but in general, does it worth to have both devices? thanks!

My answer is a simple NO, I have a Galaxy tab 10.1 and I hardly ever use it, personally i wouldn't need a 7Inc screen at all when owning a Note II.
I must confirm this - as you can see from my signature, I have Note II and Nexus 7, which is an excellent tablet, but I rarely use it since I got the SGNII. It is more convenient to use when I'm at home, and I do use it sometimes, but not much. Also I use it when I travel, I have to spare phone battery for emergency if I have to call etc. so another device comes in handy because of the "extra" battery
So, if you can afford it - get it, why not. But it is not necessary if you have SGNII and it is pretty much a waste of money. I have it only because my Desire HD died and then I got the Note....
The same with me. Since I own Note2 I didt play with my tablet even once. Actually I am looking to sell it. I am considering nexus7 ver 2 or even 10" but only something with a high resolution hdtv+ screen. Just to use it laying on a couch to read and watch hd movies. But really just considering this because note2 is optimal device in every aspect so far.

Depends on how good your eyes are. While the large screen of the Note 2 is a boon I often run into situations where text is too small for me to read without a magnifying glass, and the website that put it up won't let you zoom the screen! I used to use a 10-inch Transformer TF700, but its many problems and poor support made me give up on it. So I splurged on a Galaxy Note 8 -- just to keep things consistent -- and it makes life so much easier for these poor aging eyes.

I honestly don't reckon you need a tablet and a Note 2. I've had an original iPad, a Blackerry PlayBook (LOL), and a Nexus 7, but since I got the Note I haven't used any of them. Having one device is just simpler, you only have to keep info correct and updated on one thing, and it's always in your pocket. A tablet can't do anything fundamentally better than a phone, and it sure is not a laptop replacement, so for me I decided to sell the lot and stick with just the Note. In saying that, I still find myself looking at the Note 8 and the Tab 3, but I won't consider buying anything with an LCD panel any more after being spoiled with HD AMOLED, heh.

I have a Galaxy note 10.1 to complement my Note 2. I recommend the pair if you find yourself absolutely in need of a tablet for extended sessions where you might be taking extensive notes or doing diagrams. (Or watching movies for longer periods of time...)
Being able to share files by wifi on the fly is a pretty nice advantage of having the two devices.
Why buy a tablet when everything it has or do is already on your phone? I still dont see the purpose of tablets :/ i wont even exchange it for my super laggy netbook

I was looking to buy a Galaxy Note 8 for the past weeks, reading forums, reviews, etc. I really like it for the SPen, Quadcore and for being 8 inch. Then I saw a promotion on Note 10.1 which is the cheapest I've ever seen. Well, the difference between Note 8 and Note 10.1 prices is only $28 (Note 8 as more expensive). Both of them only wifi version.
Considering the image quality, the updates, the lightly fast processing, the light weight and new technology on Note 8, I really don't know what to do. I mean, 149ppi of Note 10.1 is really annoying and its weight is not comparable to Note 8 (but the weight is not a really problem to me).
On the other hand, I'm just thinking if I would be pleased in watching videos, reading books or other results with images (photo, games) with the 8" screen. What would be better in general for you?
P.S.: The Note 8 wifi only has a samsung official update (on-the-air) for Android 4.2.2?

I'll attempt to help you out. Never used a Note 10.1 but have read many posts from users that have both. Most feedback is exactly what you stated. Note 8 has a better screen, speed/smoothness, and feel to it. As for reading books I'm not sure but for me the 8" screen is about the perfect tablet size. If you use the tablet at home primarily than a 10" tablet would work out fine. However if you plan on carting the thing around my opinion is the 10" tablet is a bit cumbersome.
As far as I know there is no official Samsung 4.2.2 release. The build being used currently is a beta leak. However, I'm running a 4.2.2 custom rom and it is 100% stable, has floating multiwindows like the Note 10, and is smoother than 4.1.2. The Note 8 may never see an official release because Samsung might just jump right to 4.3. I would think something should be released in the near future.

I have another doubt about web browsing (I'm putting this things cause I've never tried both tablets on my hands), but in video reviews the Note 8 seems to get it done as well.

err we do have the official release of 4.2.2 on note 8 but the last release was for germany & asean region. but the features are less then what we expected... plus some feat missing.

I was wrong about 4.2.2 obviously. Did not realize some 3g models were currently getting that rolled out.
What I meant was since 4.3 is already out some manufacturers such as HTC are choosing to bypass a 4.2.2 release and go straight to 4.3 on certain devices. Thought this could be a possibility for some Samsung devices as well.
As for web browsing on the Note 8, I was pleasantly surprised with how quickly it loads web pages. I have an S4 as well and the Note is much faster.

If you don't do much reading... and don't need spen ..get the nexus 7 2013. ..it has an amazing screen and the speakers are awesome... and the price and updates are unbeatable.. (just got it too)

I have a tab10.1 and a note 8.0.
I use both for:
Internet, Email, movies, games. reading books and magazines.
Advantage 8.0: Weight, size
Disadvange: The only real disadvantage compared to the 10.1 is when reading magazines. Have to zoom in a lot and then lose track
8.0 goes on travel, I find the 10.1 to big for on the road.
Im just comparing form factor, not the actual devices.

pakure: I'm choosing Note series for reading and Spen for writing in first place and to see as well if I can do some others creative works with the Spen. Anyway, I will be watching a lot of stuff ocasionally and gaming but I'll be primmarly focusing on Spen and reading/writing. And getting a good use of its quadcore.
HANSB57: Yeah, I like your comparison from having both options. I like the portability for travelling and walking around with it. I would really like a Note that would be possible to carry around a lot, everywhere. Something light but with a screen able to do multitasking, easy to write/read, to anotate, to watch videos and to edit imgs.
I have two days to make my choice and now I'm going on Note 8.

I understand! Since my option is N5110, I'm on wifi only on 4.1.2. I'll be waiting that future update to really come. Let's see what Samsung is capable of. It shouldn't exist that kind of OS politics. It's such easy to get these updates in new devices.
After knowing your device requirements,......I suggest you get the note 8.

Yeah some got issue with the spen. But some dont have this problem. Its ok on my device.

I have three last important questions! I need to read PDF as results of books scanning. Is it fine to read these PDF files that are in landscape orientation? I mean 2 pages side by side in one landscape pdf page. Is it possible to read at least holding the Note 8 in horizontal view?
The second question is that I read about a 32gb microSD size limitation at samsung official user manual. But in gsmarena (for example) I can see the limit up to 64gb. Well, I would like to know if is it possible to put a 64gb microSD on Note 5110.
And the third one is about the speed limit. Which should be the ideal speed for getting a microSD card? Thinking about external read/write maximum speed allowed.

I have owned the 10.1 and now the 8.0. Writing is fine on either device. I'm taking college courses at night and I prefer the 8.0 for portability. The speakers are way better on the 8.0. My biggest issues of the 10.1 was the screen, being bigger but the same resolution as the 8.0 was just blurry enough to be annoying. It's a bigger issue than one would think. Also its hard to hold without being in the way. where as the 8.0 is nice for ebooks and surfing the net.

1. i think you need to zoom it a lil bit. depend on the book size... if the scan book are big you might not see it.
2. 64gb class 10 working fine. i use it on my note 2 and this note 8

sdelliott31: once gain it's very good to listen somebody who owns both tablets. I'm really appreciated in choosing Note 8 for the pointings that you've said.
edan1979: ok! I'll need just a few books with that kind of display (horizontal 2 pages viewing), but it'll be ok zooming in particularly cases. And for the speed, I'll be glad to go for up to 30MB/s class 10 card.

I used to own a Note 10.1 and now have the Note 8.0.
I would say it's a slightly better experience drawing and writing on the 10.1 because of the extra screen size.
Multi window is also more useful on the larger tablet, battery life is longer and speakers are louder.
The 10.1 also has a true tablet ui while the Note 8.0 has in effect a phone ui.
Having said all that I sold the 10.1 once I got the 8.0 for the following reasons.
As others have mentioned the 10.1 is just blurry enough to be annoying. It is more of an eye strain to read text on it than it is to read it on the Note 8.0 inspite of the larger physical size of the screen. Also the colour rendition seems better on the 8.0. The 10.1 colours seem slightly washed out in comparison.
There are times where I feel a little cramped writing on the 8.0 but these moments are hardly worth worrying about in comparison to the advantages of the smaller form factor. The 10.1 is more cumbersome to carry around and it's significantly heavier so it starts to get tiring to hold after a time. The 8.0 is also much easier to type on while holding it in portrait mode. While holding it in both hands your thumbs can easily reach all the letters.
The 8.0 also seems smother overall. The 10.1 can exhibit a little lag at time, for instance a slight delay when trying to switch apps via the recent apps button. It's still a good performer but the 8.0 is just very slick and smooth almost all the time.
Battery life on the 8.0 could be better but it's enough to get me through an 8 hour day on a full charge. I guess Samsung had to make a trade off here - a bigger battery would mean more weight and thickness so the device wouldn't feel as amazing as it does in the hand.

I own both tablets. I just got the 8" because I used to have a tab 8.9 and I thought that was the perfect size for a tablet. This one is close, more similar to a moleskine notebook.
I'm a graphic artist and honestly the resolution never bothered me on the 10". Sure you can definitely make out the pixels, just move the screen an inch away or, as a personal trick I use an anti-glare screen protector. The suddle fuzziness blends the pixels together removing the aliasing that everyone hates. Plus it makes it look more natural (prints are not extra sharp), less reflective, helps finger gliding and gives a feeling of paper when using the pen.
That said I think the 8" is better for being more portable. And that's all you really should want from a tablet. Also the pen is slightly smaller but more round and easier to hold.
I'm currently using it with a SanDisk ultra 64gb sd card and it doesn't have any problem reading it. (Both tablets didn't).
dr.mOX: yeah, once gain 10.1 battery and screen size seems to be the point to make this decision sounds hard. But for Note 8 being smoother, newer and lightly portable is what should matter. I'm thinking over and over, but each time I look around it really looks like a certain decision on Note 8. As what you've said, trades are made for better experiences in another ways. For the Phone UI, it's a little thing, but it's a different thing. Anyway, it should be fine in portrait mode.
DBBGBA: Nice to read it. It's very important to be very close to "tablet experience" to me as with notebooks we can do some working with a restricted, but possible, another kind of portability.

But I think I'll not be a User of the S-Pen, because I will prefer my fingers automatically.
All in all my question is, is the Note 10.1 2014 perfect usable without the S-Pen (surely, but i'm thinking of the whole 'enjoyment')?
Are here users, who thought they will use it, but don't use the S-Pen yet (or the opposite)?
If not, should I wait for the new Nexus 10, because is it not worth to buy a Note 10.1 2014 (high price) with don't use the S-Pen?

I love it because it has the S-Pen. If you don't want the S-pen and won't use it, this is definitely overpriced. It would be a better idea for someone who won't use the S-Pen to get a different tablet such as the Nexus 10 in my opinion.
That said, if you take any sort of notes in school or otherwise, it's amazing how much functionality the S-Pen adds.

I owned note 2 and now note 3. And I just received my note 10.1 2014 today. I don't use the spen. Only use it to play around with. I buy the note series because of its design, multi windows plus the quality of it. I used to own asus tablets but didn't have any luck with their quality. I was going to wait to get the nexus 10 too because of the lower price but the nexus doesn't have external micro sd and I don't like the design of the nexus. My main use of the tablet is just for streaming videos, youtube, web surfing and some gaming. I know other cheaper tablets can do all those but I like samsung design. I was thinking about the ipad air also but changed my mind because Ipad can't do the things I want to do. Like, I watch alot of chinese movies online using the web browser which ipad can't do because it doesn't support flash. I want to be able to just transfer movies straight from my computer to my phone or tablet without having to convert my movies to some kind of format that the ipad uses. Those of some of the things I use the most on my tablet.

Agreed, I didn't think I would use it much when I got the phone and I ended up using it more often than never, but still use it all the time with my fingers
Decided to get the tablet to cuz I like the phone so much and I wanted a high end tablet...sucked because in Canada it only came out on November first, so I had to wait until now cuz, sd my opinion, this is the only currently available tablet with decent specs, and even the nexus isn't even an option because of no sd card slot. stupid stupid stupid move to not include that, even the convenience of moving things around, or having the option for more storage than the stock flash drive. I'm going back and forth with this..
I have a budget around $400 to $450... and I basically want to use the table as a replacement of the laptop for basic stuff ( browsing, FB, youtube, videos, movies, email, etc). I like how IOS look right now, my mom has an ipad retina display and look and feel good, but my budget allow me to but the 16gb one... and isn't enought since I'm planning to copy movies on the table and watch them... beside ipads doesnt allow me to watch movies on divx, xvid, mkv, etc... I had to converted to mp4 and thats a hazzle...
I was thinking on buying the Tab Pro 10.1 because of the size, the screen definition and the battery life... but now that the Tab S is around the corner I don't know what to do... I don't care about the fingerprint... the Super Amoled is a nice touch (I have a galaxy S4) but the screen on the Pro look good enought for me... the selling point for me is the extra GB of ram...I don't know if is really work it to pay extra for that GB of ram (assuming that I can go up to $500 for the galaxy S 10.5) or paying the same as the Pro 10.1 ($400 on amazon) for the Galaxy S 8.4 and downgrade the size of the screen...
What do you guys say? Ipad air ($450), Pro 10.5 ( $400), S 8.4 ($400) or S10.5 ($500). Paying an extra $100 for 1GB of ram seem pricy to me if the feeling and performance is similar of the 2gb pro 10.1.... but I don't know if the cost/benefit is really good?
I bought a Tab Pro 10.1. It's not perfect, but I'm pretty happy. Obviously it's what I would do, since it's what I did. Just make sure Tha at you are comfortable doing a root... Of course that's the case with any android device.

Well, you could save yourself some money by buying the iPad as a refurb straight from apple. It comes down to the ecosystem and os that you prefer. Is ios nice? Sure. But does it work for you? Do you struggle with the 2gb of ram in your phone today? If not then I wouldn't worry about the 2 vs 3gb of ram. If you're worried about ram, I'm pretty sure iPad air only has 1gb.
I've tried 2 different ipads and I keep coming back to android. I just started using a tab 8.4 today and it's smooth. If you keep a ton of apps open at once then it may get laggy, but I'd imagine the iPad would have the same issues. The iPad air has what seems limitless keyboards, cases...while there are significantly less for the tab pro. I think the s line is going to have Samsung accessories.
Don't forget the real file browser, micro sd, USB support, and vast selection of keyboards on androids. You can't really go wrong with any of them, all nice devices. Pick the he one that fits your budget and hits your biggest priorities.
I have a tab pro 8.4 and it is a really good tablet. I am considering getting the pro 10.5. I've also thought about an iPad air too, so I am in a similar situation. I do love the fact that the iPad has a plethora of keyboard case options. Supposedly with the S Series Samsung is going to get more Keyboard cases. Logitech has already announced one for the 10.5.
I am probably going to go with the pro 10.5. If you have a micro SD card it is really simple to expand the storage in which the iPad would not be able to do. If you already have purchased apps on your Android phone, it's much easier just to use an Android tablet then using an iPad and paying more money for apps you already have.
That's how I work things out in my head anyway.

I am a long time user of apple , I think apple lost me after the 4S, the closed ecosystem is terrible in my view. So I switched to nexus 5 and never looked back. On tablet I bought the tab 8.4 , and put aside my iPad retina . I last week upgrade it to iOS 8 , and have to say I'm disappointed and not impressed . so I'm still loyal to my macbook on the PC side. But as far as tablet and phone no question in my mind that you get better value and better ecosystem in an android device. I also didn't root my tab, only put on it Google now lquncher and I love it , love the density and sharpness of the screen

So I got 7 and 10.1 tablets in the past. They both have their strengths and weaknesses but I would like to have your opinions on the 8.4/10.1 Pro more specifically.
By default, I'd go with the 10.1 for the bigger screen and battery especially as it seems quite light, especially in comparison to my past 10.1 devices.
However, the 8.4 seems to have more ROM support and looks more powerful. Plus, the 8.4 format allows a better grip with one hand. But I'm afraid the battery won't hold as much as I want to.
So, here my questions :
- Is there any work done on CM11 for the 10.1 ?
- How comfortable is the 10.1 to hold ?
- Is the 8.4 really much more powerful and snappy ?

You need to be more specific on the 10.1... For the 10.1 LTE (sm-t525 aka picassolte) CM11 is coming along nicely but for the WiFi only 10.1 (sm-t520) there is no known work on it for CM11.
I was thinking about the Wifi version, sorry. I forgot that the LTE model is also Snapdragon and benefits, I guess, of the work done on the 8.4.
Acutally, I need my tablet for some productivity as well. Mostly, taking meeting notes on the go. Is the 8.4 screen big enough in landscape to do so ?
