Okay, long story short I drive at work, use GPS a lot, almost every day.
Every once in a while my GPS will just stop holding a lock. When I try to use navigation it will not have a lock, then the GPS symbol will blink for a couple seconds, lock on, then a couple seconds later it loses a lock again.
When this happens even a clean wipe and clean rom install doesn't fix it... I just kinda have to wait it out.
I'm about to return my S4 to T-Mobile and get a new one because this has happened like 8 times now and it really interferes with my work.
I use my gps quite a bit and have never had an issue... Stock or custom roms

Never had an issue with GPS? Which custom ROM are you using?

I have same problem. My temporary solution is to download GPS Status & Toolbox. Open it and click Menu> Tools>Manage A-GPS state> reset. then try opening Google Maps or Navigation
(make sure GPS is on. Not off)

I tried with a differnet program called GPS Status and one called GPS Fixer to no avail, I'll try this one though next time it happens.

Any rom. It's happened on Stock, CM, AOKP, PAC, PA, etc, both M919 ROM's and i9505 ROM's... I don't know.
Well if that tool doesn't work, then you may be looking at a hardware issue.

I always had very fast gps lock about 10" with almost every rom out there. Last i was using slim ics and had excellent gps. Yesterday flashed rascream and gps coudn't lock but no one else has a problem tried several times with wipe but nothing. I restored my nandoid of slim ics and again no lock. with gps test i see that there are 1 or 2 sats in view sometimes but they vanish after 2-3" . Tried clearing agps data and maps data with wifi or 3g on/off nothing. Is this a H/W issue?
Navigation (read NAVIGATION as in the app) has a hard time locking onto me. Maps and other app have no issue however. Odd.

BOOM.
As I mentioned above I never had problem with GPS using maps or copilot but now it just can't lock no matter what I have tried. I never use navigation because I don't live in us.

Whenever the phone start to have issues to get a lock I do the following:
1 - Make sure you have a good data connection, Open GPS Test (I use the Chartcross version, not sure if there are other apps with a similar name)
2 - Once GPS Test is in the main screen, I click menu button
3 - In the menu, I choose Settings
4 - In the top part of the settings menu, I click Clear AGPS and wait about 10 seconds... Then I click Update AGPS and wait about 10 seconds as well
5- I hit back to go to the main screen of GPS Test, and wait until GPS signal gets a lock
Not sure why, but, once in a while I have to do that (I just use 4.0.4, stock, no changes whatsoever, ehrm, except for root). Usually phone gets GPS signal in less than 10 seconds, I've had the phone starting to take 1 minute or so twice to get the GPS signal lock, and in both cases, the above mentioned steps solved it.
P.s.: since you changed ROMs, you should also check your GPS settings (Configurations, Personal / Localization Services) Make sure that at least the two first items are ticked.
My GPS is terrible and takes forever to lock.

I suspect a h/w problem I will wait 2 more days to see if anything will change and after that I will contact Samsung. I have tried everything listed above and many more things before opening this thread but nothing seems to work.

Could be the modem?
It could be the modem. Probably needs to be updated or since were nearing the 4G LTE switch, Sprint could have their hands dirty with this issue until fully resolved. I had this issue with my HTC EVO 3d, GPS was a mess. But since I've changed the recovery and upgraded rom, its been working like a champ.

A cold lock will take around 1:30min to 2minutes.
a hot lock takes 4seconds to 30 seconds.
I think that recovery has nothing to do with this and the network also. I'm using copilot that is a stand alone GPS. I should also have mentioned that I m a GSM user.

Roughly yes but I had very good GPS earlier than that. The problem solved out of it's own. I can't understand how or why! Its like there were no sats above me.

Why do stock roms get a lock on GPS in a few seconds and all roms that i flash from here(XDA) take minutes to get a lock ?

that is strange, must be just me :-(
I have used AOKP and CM9 nightlies and have fast gps locks.. within 5-8 seconds.
However if I am in a building they take longer.
In theory it shouldn't make a difference

Minutes?
I'm on APEX 1.1.3 beta2 w/ leanKernel (3.0.30) and it takes me no more than 10 seconds to get a lock, while in my car with the phone in the MIDDLE by center console.
If I'm out in the open, no more than 4-5 seconds to get a GPS lock on a cloudless day.
I'm located in Toronto, Canada on ROGERS Wireless.
It might be because your phone hasn't had time to download the A-GPS info yet.

GPS has always been an issue for me. Easily 3 out of 5 mornings I set my navigation and find that I need to reboot my phone in order to get a GPS lock. Its starting to get on my nerves. Thankfully the reboot doesnt take long. It took me awhile to get my phone unlocked, rooted, and flashed so I havent had much time to dig into this GPS issue. I also kinda hoped this wouldnt be an issue anymore but it is. So whats this A-GPS? How do I update it?
Found it- In case anyone else needs it https://play.google.com/store/apps/...us2&hl=en&rdid=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&rdot=1
Fixed! One more thing I can cross off the list. List has become pretty short lately
I have noticed this for the last two weeks. My GPS has been acting goofy, and if I try to navigate it will just always say "searching for GPS". I made sure that my actual gps is turned on, I did so from the drop down notification, but I noticed that when opening my maps and stuff, I don't get the gps icon in my notification bar. Any one else experiencing this? I'm wondering if my phone is jacked, or if there's s quick fix. Phone if totally stock, no Rom, it's not flashed or anything. I did update to 4.1
Thanks in advance for any help.

I think this might be a little excessive.
Hard reset fixed this issue on my S3. Just pull the battery without shutting the phone down then turn the phone back on. I haven't had the issue come back since doing the first and only hard reset on my phone.

Untick and tick back GPS and WiFi localisation in localisation settings.
Search faster GPS in the play store. My phone locks instantly now.

I have been having this same GPS issue since I upgraded to jelly bean....
I have Odin back to stock , changed my kernels, changed base bands, installed various custom ROMs and tried GPS fix apps from the playstore ...The issue still persists......The only time it worked for 2 days straight without issues was when I installed the Paranoid android AOSP ROM.....
It had various bugs I wasn't willing to live with so I am back to wicked v2.1 and still trying to find a permanent solution regarding ng the s3's GPS issue..
The GPS temporarily works when the phone is restarted but after about 10 mins the GPS icon doesn't come on again until the phone is restarted...
I am currently using my Tmobile s3 to send this message and my GPS is not functional at the moment...I always have to restart the phone when I want to use navigation..

I did a battery pull yesterday, GPS has been working along with navigation. I'm just waiting to see how long it will work now. It sounds like it's a known issue than? Let's how there's a fix!
Anyone else having GPS issues, as in, not working at all? Any ideas for a fix?
Look for my thread regarding this problem. fixed it finally!

Hmmm, I still can't get it to work. I managed to get a searching icon for a bit and it disappeared again. I think that plus the failing update thing == me taking it back in the morning and getting a newer one from a different Best Buy. I tried clearing framework services and reverting the maps app multiple times and no go. Even standing out in the middle of the street at 3am trying to get it to lock.

I had the update fail, and my GPS was dead, too. Swapped it at Best Buy. New one had no update issues and GPS works great!
Can you do some extensive testing with the gps in the new exchanged one??? because I got gps working good on my tablet but after using it for awhile it like turns itself off, shows a searching for gps flashing icon at top left of screen and cannot lock on to satellites no more!

Hoping that will be my case too, just got back with a shiny new replacement, from a different store this time that just got their truck in and unloaded late last night. So hopefully I'm avoid the "bad best buy batch" lol.

Looks like I'm good to go, replacement has no screen issues (dust or pixels) and the update installed perfectly, GPS locked in about 15 seconds, mostly waiting for me to step out of the house I'm guessing.
My gps suddenly failed to lock on to any satellites when playing ingress, reboot fixed it

I've never had a device which locked on as fast as this Nexus 7. Its beautiful. Make sure the top of the device isn't being smothered by your hand because that degrades the signal received significantly.

Knock on Wood, I think I got the gps problems nipped in the butt!
I had to reset the tablet from system settings after having both updates installed, when setting up tablet (initial boot) enable all location stuff except for the new android 4.3 wifi location while off option.. Also make sure to disable backup and restore options while doing the initial install.
Now so far GPS has been working steadily ever since first initial boot, no need to reset and power up again and after trying it for an hour all gps apps back and forth its still finding signal sometimes instant sometimes 20 seconds or so but no issues like before this time...
Working like it should now! I guess a hard reset after all updates was needed to reconfigure things!
As long I only use Google Maps, the GPS locks consistently.
If I use other GPS apps (like GPS Status, Gas Buddy, etc.) then eventually the GPS gets into a state where it won't lock, ie the GPS in the status bar just blinks forever.
Reboot has fixed this every time.
When the JSS15J first installed, the GPS also wouldn't lock. I had to turn on WiFi/Mobile assistance for it to lock the first time. After that first lock, I could turn off WiFi/Mobile assistance and it would still lock on its own.

I can't post in the dev forums yet so I'll post this here. My GPS seems to be working....aka it can locate me fine on maps however when I start a navigation it won't follow me or even show correct maps half the time. Anyone experience this? Tested using cyanogen mod nightly. Trying the rc1 today.
More then likely its the usual GPS issue for aosp. Do a full wipe using advanced wipe option and choosing all but internal storage. Flash a stock sense ROM and pull up maps or GPS. Let it get a lock on you. The full wipe again and flash cm back. Is GPS isn't moving that's the usual deal. Maps will get a lock but if you pull up just the map and then drive somewhere it won't change position till you close maps and open again.

Thanks. Ill try that. However do I need to do this every time I re-flash after? Or just the initial move to Cyanogen?
Usually just the first time if it happens. Sometimes it can happen again if you're switching between the 2 a lot. But normally its a one time thing

Yea I just got a replacement HTC One and forgot about this. Flashed straight into CM and couldn't get a GPS lock. Had to download and flash Bonestock and lock my GPS. Make sure you get something like GPS Status & Toolbox app to see that you have a successful GPS lock while in Sense. Then go back to AOSP.
Make sure maps has access to your location if you have Cyanogenmod privacy guard enabled. I would get location on maps, but my location wasn't updating in nav. I noticed privacy guard was the culprit, toggled it off, and everything worked fine.
