I'm hoping someone can help me out...
Late last week I changed my ROM to HenseMod7 (for VM) - to give it a try and because some of the other ROMs I had been trying were giving me issues with MMS, calls and other things. All was good - or so I thought.
A day or two after I made the change - I started getting text messages from 999-999-9999. These text messages are all gibberish - letters, symbols and numbers mixed together. They always come two messages together and about 12 hours apart (so about 4 per day). I delete them as soon as I see they are in my list.
I saved the contact to my phone and blocked it as a caller.
I went onto the VM website and logged into my account and blocked the "number" for text messages - but since I know it isn't a "real" number - you've probably guessed it - I'm still getting these messages.
Might this be something related to the ROM somehow? I mention that only because all the other ROMs I've tried since I rooted my phone have not had this particular issue. This is the first time I've gone back to a Sense-styled ROM (made particularly for VM) and it's the only time I've gotten these spam texts.
I hesitate calling VM about this issue if it could/might be related to the ROM since I know they are less than helpful when you root your phone.
Any thoughts, ideas, input or help would be so very much appreciated.
Thanks all!

Hi,
Your problem is very strange and honestly, I tried HenseMod and I didn't get this error. It is although true that this ROM has some problems with text messages as I couldn't send a long message (the ROM could not split the long message into several small messages of 160 characters).
I can see only two solutions : either you change of ROM (there are maaanny good ROMs for the Wildfire S) either you reinstall your ROM, verifying you have the good version for your phone model (marvel, marvelc, etc.). Maybe you can also update your radio if you can do it and know how to do it, but I guess it wouldn't be really helpful in that case.
Do you think these messages come from a real person ? Maybe there are some network problems, or maybe the ROM cannot read the message from a particular network / phone, I don't know.
Good luck

just another option it could be a service network message that is not coming through properly. in the uk when you activate your sim card in a new phone uk carriers send you a text message that contains the network settings to get online. if your access point is not already configured
it could be getting scrambled somehow. if you can you could try to contact your phone carrier. go into a hop if possible and ask them if they have kept any logs of sending you service messages. if so maybe try to cross reference them and see?
Thank you both Izzy and Heavy_Metal_Man for your thoughts on this.
Since I first posted the question, I have changed ROMs and the problem has stopped. This is the curious thing. I have been trying different ROMs on my phone since I first rooted it last winter and only with HenseMod have I had this kind of annoyance.
In searching the internet on this - I have found posts by other Virgin Mobile users about this same issue. At one point someone mentioned that it was some kind of message from "Telus" (which is a Canadian provider - but I live in the US - and quite a distance from Canada). Most of those posts were from non-US users.
I do receive updates from VM without issue - so I don't think it's that.
I have a Marvel C phone if that adds anything to the equation.
Thanks again for your input. Anyone else have thoughts?

So the problem really comes from the ROM and it isn't really strange because HenseMod is known to have some SMS bugs
My first thoughts were some kind of loopback error related to cell broadcasts and/or emergency message notifications. If you consider the times you mentioned, have some imagination, and throw in some cross-talk pollution it might even jive with what h_m_m (heavy_metal_man) was saying (in terms of it repeating); however, when I looked at the ROM, it's strictly GB/CM7 and those features weren't incorporated until ICS. So I'm gonna say that h_m_m has the most plausible reason. Thank goodness you found another ROM that works and can move on and leave the problem to those who want to keep trying to figure it out.
Ive had another thought about it. What base version is the Rom made from? If it's based from a carrier specific Rom and then "De-carrierized" it may have been conflicts left in the networking configuration that made the cdma/gsm believe it was in another country and needed roaming data settings. In any event I'm glad your sorted pal

Thank you!
Thank you all for your thoughts and comments on this matter. I truly appreciate it!
As I previously mentioned, once I changed the ROM - the annoying texts stopped. So perhaps (as others have mentioned) it may be a quirk of the ROM itself.
I do like trying different ROMs - makes me feel like I've got a new phone for a brief time, while I still have my little Wildfire S. Its a fun "exercise" for me. Wish some more developers would build for the MarvelC though.
Thank you all again!

I recently flashed my wife's Tilt 2 with several different builds of the EnergyRom and then finally back to the stock HTC Rom. With all of them after whenever she sends someone a MMS, it says that it was sent successfully and then the other person's phone even wakes up like it is about to receive a message but then nothing ever comes through. I have spent a lot of time searching through the Rom development forum and found no solution. Does anyone know what could be causing this?
go back to the energy rom thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=562773
hit the 'search this thread' button just below the page #'s.. then click 'advanced search'
and then in the search box on the left for keywords.. type 'mms*' then hit search..
it could be a few things aparently.. maybe something with 'carrier provisioning' not doing what it should?
really though, i'm not trying to be a jerk.. I just spent better than a couple of hours trying to get my sending limits to 600KB..
that's how i finally got it.. just searching and searching..
No in my post it clearly states that I am now having this problem with all ROMs. I have gone back to the stock HTC ROM and it is still happening so it has nothing to do with the Energy ROM.
I have read about the issue with carrier provisioning and since I did not use it I know that it is not related to that. Flashing several different ROMs including the stock ROM has not changed this problem. Once again, does anyone have any actual ideas about why this would be happening?
contact your carrier.... Sounds like somehow you may have missed one of their automatic sim updates. The carriers regularly send them out for.. I have no idea why actually. But I know I was having issues with my touch pro (problems sending texts and phone calls would cut out after only a few minutes) because somehow my sim didnt get the random update they send out every so often.
If they do determine that is the issue what they have you do is call from a land line or something while they update your sim, from there you have to reset your phone and they'll then do some check and once thats done everything will be fixed.
I am having a problem with text messages. Every outgoing text message is right, but every incoming text message reads an hour earlier than it really is. So if someone sends me a message at 4pm, my phone says it is received at 3pm. It's really annoying, and it messes up then entire list of messages from a person. Is there anything I can do about this? I have the Energy Sense Rom.
Anyone had this problem??
Hey, I run the Cookie Energy ROM and OCCASIONALLY on a new flash the time stamps will be messed up. What fixes it for me, is enter your time settings (click on the clock in the HOME Sense Tab) and pick the time zone, then manually enter the correct time and it typically fixes it inside the Sense Text Client.
However, you can also use something like SMS-Chat, which runs faster and cleaner. But occasionally freezes. I'm not sure how to fix this. But just a suggestion. Cheers
I talked to Rogers techs and they reset my phone settings from their end and still messed up. Then they blamed the fact that it was an unlocked phone. I told them that the last 3 phones I used on their network all unlocked and showed the correct time stamp. I also attached an official answer from HTC.
Who am I supposed to believe?.
HTC answer:
Thank you for contacting HTC about your Touch Pro 2. I understand that your text messages are coming in four hours off. I wish we could be of more assistance, but your carrier stamps the time on those messages. This has happened for years on the Rogers network. There is no setting on your mobile device that controls the time stamp you receive. Some Rogers-branded devices have a hot fix available that accounts for the Alaskan time, but the T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 doesn't have a patch available for correcting this issue. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, but I'm glad I could offer some insight into this issue.
Still confused?!?!?!
Just to add a little more confusion to the topic. My friend and I both bought Tmoblie phones. He a HTC HD2 and me a HTC touchpro 2. I had them unlocked . We put our Rogers sims in our phones and his text time stamps are right on and mine our 4 hours behind. I now believe its a Rogers cell tower problem. IF anyone out there has seen or has a soluiton it would be greatly appreciated...seeing that i get 50 to 100 textes a day, it gets confusing when the times are off.
Thxs
Its the rom it self, I am on virgin in Canada and with certin roms my txts times are messed but with some there not, try a different rom.
After 3 days of searching the forums I found a fix that works with all HTC phones. I used it on 2 HTC phones, HD2 and Touchpro 2 with great success. All you have to is download the small cab file to your computer copy it over to your phone and extract it. Thats it.....
Thxs to Dangerously for the fix. I added the link to the thread which has the cab in it.

The Energy ROM FAQs list this fix:
Wrong SMS Timestamp: If you are receiving text messages (SMS) with the wrong timestamp, what may cause them to be in the wrong order, a solution was posted here.
Hi Guys - i've posted this in the HD7 specific forum too - please let me know if multiple posts is frowned upon and i'll delete it.
Anyway...
I've been searching and searching and I cant find anyone with the same problem as me, on WP7 or HD7. Basically the times are completely wack on the text messages i receive. The could be a few hours behind, or usually entire days behind, and my personal favorite, from the future.
No idea what's going on. Everything seems fine in the settings - been over them 100 times. I've seen it as being a common issue with some older phones, but nothing on the latest ones.
Has anyone had this? Or even better, does anyone know how to fix it? The text messages that I send are stamped correctly, so it's just the ones i receive. It looks like the phone is using the time sent from the carrier, and then applying some wacky timezone to it based off my timezone (which is Auckland, New Zealand).
Help!
I have this exact same problem.
My outgoing texts display the time correctly but incomg is off by something like 5 hours. I've searched the forums and google and haven't found anything myself.
Answer from Microsoft:
Time stamps for Text messages are encoded and sent from the carriers MMSC message system. If the time stamp is showing up wrong, that is because it is being encoded wrong from the carriers network. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done device side, you'll want to focus your attention on Rogers in this case.
I suppose other phones possibly counter this by just making the receive time the timestamp as well.

I've never had such an extreme case with a five hour time difference, but it does happen with some incoming texts.
I remember I sent my sis a text at 1:43pm and she replied and the timestamp said 1:38pm. So maybe it depends on the person your texting and how their time is set up?
Well that's a pain. I read that reply from Microsoft too, but it's pretty unhelpful. To be honest using the date stamp from the carrier seems like a poor decision, or at least not having the option to chose, as far as the user is concerned the only date / time they care about is the one on their device.
I guess i'll have to wait and see if someone comes up with a way to change this on the phones, I see there is a way to do it on the WP6 phones.
Im trying to diagnose what appears to be some issues ive been having this week.
I'm relatively new to the whole ROMing scene here, having recently decided that i wanted to finally get up to kitkat. So im running the most up to date version of ShinyROM on my VZW Gnex, which i updated from a prior version of that earlier this week (and apparently ive been missing texts all week so i dont know if its a coincidence or not).
Additionally, ive seen some suggestions to make sure my access point names settings are correct. But those settings seem to be nowhere when i look for them in the menu.
So i guess 2 questions.. could this be a bug in my ROM, and where have these settings disappeared to?
It is unlikely that your ROM is casuing the issue. Check the ROM thread is anyone else is facing similar issues.
Call, sms are usually dependent on the baseband version, which is the firmware for the radio chipset. The ROM should not cause this issue.
What is the issue exactly, u are missing all sms or only randomly missing few texts. Is this issue for both sending and receiving texts?

I'm getting some texts, and i know at least some are being received, i have no way to verify all obviously. I can verify that i have missed multiple texts inbound though from more than one person. I also had an issue tonight where a text was sent 3 times to someone, though that may have been due to my location (a bar in a basement of a downtown area, guessing maybe the phone wasnt getting its delivery confirmation in return so it kept trying)
As for the radio, i'm running the stock (and most up to date) radios available, which had no issues before.
As for the thread, i do see one post about 10 days ago with someone mentioning issues, subsequent posts go into APN settings, which brought on my other question.. but have no idea if this could be the cause.
Okay I'll get right to the problem then some back story.
I can receive text messages but not send them. I can call people and receive calls. My mobile data works too.
I put my sim card in and old phone and tried sending text messages and it works. This leads me to believe that it is the actual OS. I would really like to not un-root and start all over.
Possible problems:
I have done an EXTENSIVE amount of research (if I may say so) in regards to this. I've gotten EFS folder missing to wrong SMSC number inserted. I have recently rooted my phone (ViperOne 6.2.0) and am brand new to this. (if you couldn't tell) Could anyone help me with this or even point me in the right direction? I would greatly appreciate people not linking xda threads because I have been over most of them. (I can even link the titles if that helps)
Thanks in advance.
