Different sound for Nfc.apk - NFC Hacking

Hello there!
I've been searching high an low for this, and can't seem to find a way to solve this: the sound the phone makes when detects an NFC tag is annoying! I know it is stored inside Nfc.apk and I tried (unsuccessfully) to modify that apk, but... would it be a way to modify it, maybe even easily, through the Xposed framework?
I'm no developer but I'm willing to put all the necesary information together and try to do it myself.
So please help me out here!

Hi Daniel,
If I remember it right this is quite easy
Have a look at your NFC.apk (/system/app/) and change the standard sound files (/res/raw/start.ogg and /res/raw/end.ogg) to something silent ...don´t forget to backup your nfc.apk first ..
To make it short and clear: create a silent start.ogg and a silent end.ogg file and swap these files with the standard files within the NFC.apk....

I've done just that and, for whatever reason, Nfc.apk keept on crashing afterwards. I might have done something wrong, dunno...

Hmm, are your .ogg files working ?
Not sure if you could have something else done wrong, but this method was discussed several times here on xda... So, perhaps have a look via search if someone else had the same issues.

Really? I know it seems like your just tweaking an app, but systemically you're pirating someone's app, changing it, and expecting it to work. You'll need to re-sign it, at least (look for that).

Pirating someone's app by changing sound files in nfc.Apk? Are you serious? Have you read and understood the thread ? Nfc.apk is part of the firmware of your device ... NOT SOMEONE'S APP.
I think I know the difference between a firmware tweak and pirate apps pretty good, because a lot of people trying to pirate my apps every day and I wouldn't support any pirating.

Yes, it came with your phone, but really, it is technically software (perhaps by an older definition), and someone, though on a time-clock, sat at a keyboard and punched it all in. You might be surprised how much freer a development environment we'd have if people started respecting the big, bad corporations much like they do individual developers. Ten years ago M$ eased up after a crack-down when they saw what was going on, for real, on XDA. I just think it's crap that there's a signing process in place to make swapping out a sound file that much more difficult, but you make my point really well. It needs to be there. What it gets down to is where you draw the line on what's pirating and what's not, and without that line being "as soon as the app is altered at all," we end up with a lot of fuzziness. So yeah, decompile, resign. Huge hassle to figure out how to do that the first time.

Nope, I don´t think you got my point. You said "systemically you're pirating someone's app"...And that´s the point I do not agree. And I don´t draw a line between big corporations and individual developers. Pirating has nothing to do whether it´s some big bad corporation or a small independent developer, it only depends on the licensing model and btw. Android is open-source.
I don´t know if someone is running an asop rom or a heavy customized manufacturer rom... however the stock nfc.apk "someone, though on a time-clock, sat at a keyboard and punched it all in" was build with open source in mind, so changing some sound files within the nfc.apk and pirating (e.g. changing copy-right protection and use a paid app without paying ) is something completely different for me ...even if you have to use the same methods to achieve this ...

Is it ok to post free apps that you have modded?

Well I have a couple apps that I am modding to my liking. I'm modding the actual apk file itself. Is it ok to post them when finished, or could that be an issue
If they are free I don't see why not.
Free does not always equal open source or give you the right to distribute.
You should email the developer to make sure.
I just figured it would get deleted by a Mod due to the fact it wasn't my work originally. I got a couple I know people will like.
Fancy Widget, working on a clear Pandora (couple versions actually), and Some more that I come across.

I second this. An e-mail to the dev would be the best idea.
Wonder how Pandora would respond to a bad grammer, spelling, and sounding email? Hey look at this email this no body actually thinks we will give him permission to distribute our program, just changed to his liking. haha

Haha, post it here and I'm sure we can proof read it for you.
Pandora was only a small start-up not too long ago. Although I think your chances are VERY slim on getting them to give you permission to redistribute their APK. Think about it, what if you started putting in a virus and everyone blames it on Pandora?
If you have a clear theme you want people to use, you're probably better off packaging something yourself that requires users to download the official APK for Pandora and modify the contents themselves.
What I just described is pretty common practice as it puts the modification of the content in the end users hands which is (arguably) within their rights.
So posting a zip of some original images (not modified versions of theirs) and instructions on downloading their APK and making the modifications is the safest way to do it.

i've even seen an "adless" version of pandora floating around somewhere before.

All I wanted was a transparent Pandora. I made every widget 50% transparent. I know there is metamorph and there is a theme/skin floating around that will do it. But, I dont like having to go through the process of downloading Metamorph, download this, download that. Just wanted to have it as a apk. I haven't used Metamorph since nexus one sold it 2 months after buying it. Might have changed since then, but it used to fail on doing some skins.
you should just make the theme, and let people morph it themselves. a theme is not the same as distributing the application.

htc clock widget

ok so im trying to figure out how to edit the htc clock widget to open a different clock like desk clock. can this be done?
def's uncommon rom is the only one that i know of that does it. good luck getting him to tell you how. def is one of my favorite dev, i'm not calling him out. all the dev keep there findings to them selves really.
question... how come people don't share there tweeks and hacks anymore?
i remember full threads on reg edits, tweeks, and hacks, that people would share with the world. I actually had threads where i would take requests, and cab them up for people to be able to install easily.

I keep nothing secret, and I literally JUST replied to the OP's PM, just before reading your completely asinine comment. My PM box is FULL of questions AND answers with guidance on duplicating mods. Truth be told, I do not POST these modifications and how-to in their own threads for one reason only. I do not have the time to support them.

Def, I was not trying to be a **** head and don't see that my post directed anything negative towards you. I was iust stating that a few years ago, members in the Windows mobile forums shared everything. Infact, there were http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/windows-mobile-hacks-tweaks/ forums just for regedits and hacks. I don't find that on the 2010 Android forums.
I didnt mention the guy who posted a zip file that was able to put the 6 bar signal meter in the task bar. He clearly stated that he pulled it out of your Rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8758884&postcount=22 Then your reply saying something about you not liking what he did. To me that said the Android developers didn't want the secret out of the bag. It's not just you. I have ran quite a few roms and really liked certain parts, but didn't keep it for the fact that I didn't like other parts. I have searched for ways to get just the good hacks and tweeks, but there just not there.
For the record..... I am sorry Def. I was not saying that your bad for not posting everything you do. I was just trying to say that there's a good chance he will not get the information he seeks. That's just the way Android forums are going these days.
here is a couple thing i would like to add to my roms, but cant find information on them. correct me if i'm wrong, but people just dont share this stuff.
1. 6 bar signal
2. htc clock widget launching vanilla clock
3. app drawer 5 icons wide,
4. battery percentage in battery icon
yes, def's roms have all of these. that is why i run his rom. at least until he bans me from his roms due to this thread.

Something should be done about it, because it's getting out of hand.
1) It makes quoting posts frustrating. It actually punishes us, because we need to manually remove the crap, which is ironically MUCH more difficult on mobile webbrowsers, than PC.
2) It makes posts more difficult to read. Most of them add a few blank lines and itself, making less fit on a screen without scrolling
3) It's totally unnecessary.
4) It is spam by the apps themselves.
5) Users who need an XDA app, can just type "XDA" into their app stores. So it can't even be argued that it is difficult to find such apps otherwise.
My Proposal:
1) Automatically filter the comment out of posts. They are lame, and unneccessary. Get rid of them automatically (simple string substitution).
2) Give a 3 month warning that users utilising clients which post such garbage, will be given 3 warnings, and will be temp banned if they use them. It is fair.
3) Start a shame list of poorly designed XDA clients.
I agree it isn't the end of the world, but its a lot of wasted productivity, and it's unnecessary. It's bad enough that I have noticed that some people here have massively long/intrusive signatures. Some of those people also have these annoying tags, so they have 3x more "crap", than they do actual post.
I agree with this, but it's up to the admins, will flag this to them.

It's been flagged!
The thing with the signature is that it serves the same purpose as the default signature of your mobile phone in the email client (for example: "Sent from my Verizon Droid X"). It helps to inform people that your message was written while mobile, and so the text might contain errors, or might not be as well thought out as it would have been if you were in front of your computer. The signature is activated by default on our Android apps (and, actually our Windows Phone 7 app).
That said, if there is huge support for turning off the default signature in the application, we'll do it, but this is the first time we're hearing about it being a problem. As mentioned, it serves a practical purpose.
Thanks for the feedback.

Huh? I agree it's useful ... more so than not, at least, as an identifier and a screaming 'hello I'm on my mobile so if this doesn't make sense you know why' kinda thing. I don't see how this is a big deal ... at all. LOL ... ? I also fail to see how it gets in the way of anything, like quoting especially, as it is essentially another single line that still precedes the quote tags.

It's useful IMHO and I am not aware of any issues in including the signature in quotes- it's a single line... who cares? I imagine someone quoted an entire, incredibly long OP, to say "thanks"...
I don't know if it is possible, but how about making the signature from the tapatalk app's just smaller than average text? That way, people can still be informed it was written while mobile, and it would be less obtrusive for the ones who don't like it.... And I'm sorry, I know my normal signature is long

You have to post one way or another - we don't need to know how or what you used to post. It is getting easier to post so more people are posting. Teens are no longer getting flip phones and now populating this forum with more and more silly questions looking for answers you can easily find using google. People have the EVO 4g and think they can post anything they want in the EVO General forum because you have an evo and you are posting in the general section. I want to see general information about the EVO and not other phones on other networks and other random things you find interesting. There are other forums for that.
We all have to start somewhere I know that and when I joined in 2006 the first 4 years I probably posted 100 times and now I am posting like crazy trying to help these people find answers hoping people learn something. People are here 1-2 years with over 1,000 posts.
Yeah, it helps to know that is was posted on a phone but with keyboards and big screens take a couple extra seconds to make sure everything is typed right. I do it why can't other people.
But what if you could have the benefits of knowing which client it was posted with, without having that crap in posts too? Surely that would be better, correct?

No, please, don't turn off signatures in the app. Can't they be stripped, however, the way they're stripped when quoting and responding on the desktop app? I agree, they're difficult to remove if you're responding on the app, but as you said, they're useful to indicate the poster is swyping, or whatever may account for little errors in their post.

Idk if u can completely disable it but long pressing the contact u can remove em in 1 click i will check if they can be disabled and edit the post
Edit: i dont see any option to disable them entirely but deleteing is easy and it deletes the entire frequent call log for that contact and not just one call at a time so if u have (contact name) 15 calls to that contact it deletes all 15 calls and not just 1 call at a time

Do most people not know about the apps on the market that hide info like that? If you want to hide certain numbers when they call/text - get a black list app/privacy app or something like that. I like showing off what my phone can do also so I know what you mean. However, I don't allow complete strangers to handle my phone. I don't mind people seeing the name of someone I call often - I'm more concerned about the pictures they might see.
Guys, I use shady sms. It's got a built in call guard and a hidden contact list. Dev is cool too, he responds with help usually same day.
It blocks calls, sms, and hides them in the app. There's no app icon either. To open it, you go to phone, type your secret code, and hit send.

If you're going to be a douche and cheat on your woman and not have the balls to, you know - be a man and tell her what's up. Then at least put in some effort to cover your tracks instead of being lazy. Delete the frequently called list yourself, manually.
I'll take my infraction if that's what happens. This thread is stupid. Reported.

Damn, I was just joking.. Did I touch a spot, did your significant other cheat on you or etc... WOW!
I just want to app that monitors the Frequently Called list and prevents contacts from ever appearing on it without having to manually clear the list.
I know there other members looking for a similar solution to this problem....
Didn't mean to touch a nerve, hope you get your partner back, root their phone or something nice like that! Good luck!
Maybe edit the phone.apk or dialer.apk to get rid of the frequent list all together.
Or it may just be editing a value check for a call to save to the list. That way its always empty.
If you're going to be a jerk to your wife, then at least just get a separate phone. Or maybe you DO want to get caught. If you really cared you would not cheat, and if she's not what you want any more do the right thing and divorce her so she can do what she wants and maybe find someone who respects her without having to be concerned about someone who seems to not care about her(you).
That being said, I would check out Shady SMS, seems to help some ways. I figure the cost is worth it if you don't want to get caught.

Nope no nerve was touched. Just hate guys like that - they really screw things up for the rest of us. I did root her phone, along with mine If you really were joking, I apologize. If you weren't I refer you back to my first post.
When is this internet 2.0 supposed to kick in? Because we severely need a sarcasm smiley...

I was really just joking .. But I found Tiger - No Frequently Called, looking for the APK so I can try it out on Epic (But I can't find anywhere)... If anybody find it, share please
Any new info on the subject
I think the app Super Private Conversation hides all communication from certain contacts and it is free on the market.
They changed the name to Private SMS & Call but it works wonders and is free. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superdroid.spc&hl=en
Alternatively, just use google voice for that purpose. All outgoing calls and text will be hidden within the google voice app.
Got to admit this was some good reading... If that man is capable of having more than one woman don't be mad at him... Kudos to you for at least not wanting to flaunt it and taking the time to try and do your pimping right.......hahahaha
Hey guys don't be mad at me, the forum name is there for a reason....LOL

not the case. I use my phone for work and business and I had more than 50 numbers populating the Frequently Called list. I used to be able to clear them in GB but ICS doesn't let you do that. tsk tsk tsk F U C K!
I hope someone finds a way, i tried to long press and nothing happens. I'm running anaconda ROM by team venum. I want to be able to delete specific call records

New to modifying files, so need some assistance and advice

I will start off saying I am new to this as the title , so I will probably ask a lot of redundant questions and noobie questions, I hope that's ok.
What I want to do (for now):
I am attempting to do is modify the systemui.apk file. I would think that would be a fairly easy task, but with my VERY limited knowlege of things I'm not sure.
The file has a lot of icons for customizability, but I want to add some of my own, or rather this phones icons(samung epic 4g) default icons. I have the icons I grabbed from a stock rom, and saved them.
I have the toggles, and battery icons, which are what I want to add into the systemui.apk. Iwill probably call it something like Samsung default, since default name is already taken.
So all that said, how easy would it be for me, someone who has never even attempted this before, but has a small amount of knowledge of what stuff is, ie: difference between odex and deodex, where the files are located at, etc?
Stuff like what file/files to edit, what to put in the xml files as in what line coding or whatever they call it. Stuff like that.
I'm very simple in nature, so if there is a way to do what I want to do, please direct me in the right direction, and please, keep it simple if possible.
I do realize there are tutorials about how to theme and how to make or edit a systemui file but I can't seem to find a more specific way/thread to do what I want to do, not that I have found anyways.
My guess is I will have to edit some xml files and add some lines, I just an not sure what exactly to put in those lines, or what files to edit.
First of all: wrong section - this belongs to Q&A.
About modifying APKs, I'm also not much familiar, but I believe that apktool and those GUI tools that includes it can be fairly helpful. I personally use APKChanger to do all my APK-related mods.

Awesome it looks like a good start, I will give it a go, and report back.
Hope this works, as I am not really doing much to the systemUI file, all I am doing is adding in, what's not there, so the rest can stay in tact, just I want to add some preferred icons/png files I have on hand already. I'm not diescting to make a rom or anything, so I can't see this as being really hard thing to do.....for those that have done it could probably do this in about 5 mins work without breaking a sweat....me however it seems it's takeing awhile lol.

Very cool program, thanyou for the info. I kinda messed around with it a bit, and it's vvery nice for those not so smart at heart people like me.
I still have a snag though. I know where the icons are, I'm just not sure how to activate them via the like settings and such.
Take the battery mod within 3mini for example, you open 3minit, and under the battery part it you select it and it has a bunch of icons you can pick, but the stock ones aren't there. I am wanting to add stock icons, which are in the res/label-dhpi folder, (I think that's what it's called), but it's the folder that has the icons in it. Now, to access those icons, you have xml file you have to point to to tell it to actually see the icons in said folder, via a code line as I call it.
There is my problem, I am not sure really WHAT code line to put in said xml file/files, so I'm running into a wall.
So I can extract/decompile the apk file fine, and I have a folder/files with some more folders and files under that. I have looked at the stuff but since I'm not a programmer at all, and not to get off on another rabit trail here, but I cannot even do simple plain html....yes I know it's a text thing, but if you don't understand the if's and waits and the language of it all, well it might as well be german.
People always say "what's the problem, it's easy" well I suppose it is, if you are savvy to that stuff, but for those that have a hard time with one thing, it comes oh so simple for another, but it doesn't mean someone is stupid, it just means it's not their thing. Some atre meant to be some things, some are not. Not everyone is meant to be a doctor, yet some are because they understand those sorts of things better.
Anyways, I am sorry for trailing off, in short I am saying if you have a hard time with what I call coding, and yes it is a coding in some form, just as html is, even though it's still text, it's still a code that tells things what to do, IE: code
In short, I am nt sure what file/files to edit,. and even then I am not sure what lines to put in them.
Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032614 is a good example of what I mean. While I appreciate this persons hard work and efforts, people like me it may as well be written in a foreign language of sorts, because while I understand editing a certain file, and I get the concept of CODE: that's where I end up getting lost. I have opened the said xml file, and see the code, but when they say code, well I have to ask things like what line to I edit, where do I cut/paste the lines in that post to, do I delete another line and replace it with that code, etc..etc..
I in NO way am trying to trash people for their posts and efforts, so I hope it's not taken that way, I just sometimes have to be drawn a picture for things, like a child. As hard as I might try, I just am not grasping what to do after the point of opening the file and editing it.
I suppose I will just give up this quest I have for what I want to do, unless I fin somone kind enough, and patient enough to go a little further into explanation of what I need to do to further go on. it can be hard for some people, especially if you are a programmer to explain a little more in depth about what a person needs to do, I have friends that have that mind set, and they to get irritated at people like me .....I guess it is what it is.
Thanks again for the info, I appreciate all that xda and the people here do, and all thier time and effort towards the mods.
Well I can't provide further help then... My ability stops at making navigation bar mods which only involves modifying 5 lines of xml. Good luck with learning from scratch
