Was wanting some more help with rooting my Evo for the first time. I know there are a lot of guides for n00bs out there but this stuff moves too fast and they are out of date.
Anyways, my phone is stock:
-Android 2.2
-Software number 3.29.651.5
-PRI version 1.77_003
-PRL version 60671
My intention was to use Unrevoked 3.21 but I read through ALOT of information from different sites and am thoroughly confused. Since my phone has all the recent OTA updates can it be rooted with this? And if so, I most definitely need to not take the Sprint OTA updates and wait for the "rooted" versions correct?
I like the Sense UI (but never used any others) and am happy with the phone the way it is. My hope is being able to use the hotspot feature and remove the bloatware from the phone.
Can anyone walk me through some of this (specific to my need)? As said before, I know there are already some n00b walkthroughs out there but most are too dated and some things apply and some don't which makes it very confusing.
Unrevoked 3.21 is the way to go. I just used it to root my replacement evo and it worked beautifully. Here is the thread for it, just read it and follow the relatively easy instructions and you won't have any issues.
Great.....thanks. This one is the most current I have seen.
I have read that if I take this route the phone could still be flashed back to a stock state in case warranty service (by Sprint) is needed. Am I still correct in assuming this?
Absolutely. It is very easy to unroot and return your phone to stock.
I'm going through the process now. However, my phone has rebooted and unrevoked3 has been sitting doing nothing for awhile. It still says:
Waiting for root...(safe to restart if this doesn't work)
Recovery image: ClockworkMod Recovery
This has been on there for around 5 min now. Do I re-run unrevoked at this point? Do I need to do anything with my phone? What happens if I re-run it and same thing happens?
Thanks.
That happened to me the first time I did it. It worked fine the second. You're ok to run it again.
Nice....it was a success the second time. Thanks.
Now all I have to do is find out what to do from here! lol
You can find info on anything that you might want to do by searching the forums here at xda and by using google. I recommend reading up as much as you can before you start deleting or flashing anything.
The best piece of advice I can give you is to do a nandroid backup before you modify ANYTHING on your phone. That means do one right now so if by chance you screw something up, you can always restore it and be back to where you started. If you don't know what a nandroid is or how to do one, use the search feature here or once again, google.
Good luck and welcome to the xda community
Sorry to jump in on the post but metalhead has been so helpful to how I would like to root. I have searched for nandroid, nandriod backup, and back up nand. None of theme gave a clear path for tutorial. If you could lead me in the right direction I think that this should be made a sticky.
Thanks in advance.

Do you know what recovery you flashed? regardless, there are two ways to go about it. 1. turn your phone completely. hold Power and VOL - until the boot menu appears, use volume to move the selection and power to select. pick recovery. nandroid backup.
2. get Rom Manager(market). it has a one-touch button to reboot into recovery. easy peasy.
each recovery is different. Whether you have RA or Clockwork or some other third thing, you will get the same result, you just have to go about it differently.
good luck!!
I'm back post root! However, have some questions that I haven't been able to find answers to.
1) Am I OK to take my phone out of USB debug mode, or does it need to stay like that?
2) Can I re-install HTC sync and will it work with all ROMS?
3) I downloaded ROM Manager and Titanium Backup (both paid). When flashing a new ROM, all settings are gone as well as apps from the market. Is there a way to restore a rom without having to go back and re-download ROM Manager from the market then use it to restore? It takes to darn long to reboot the phone into recovery and restore that way.
Also with Titanium Backup, since it just backs up apps what is the point of doing a backup with it? If a complete image is saved by whichever backup you do, all apps in that image will be restored as well. When would anyone ever need to restore just the apps from before with the same rom?
4) Can I do a batch flash with a custom ROM and a custom theme? Or should I do the ROM first then the theme? I wouldn't think the theme can be applied until the ROM is flashed first. I'm not sure if ROM Manager will do this in a specific order.
Thanks.

1) i would leave it enabled. it doesn't hurt anything and there are a lot of programs and modifications that use it.
2) in the half dozen roms i've tried, HTC sync does work. i am curious though. what are you using it for?
3) i'm not 100% clear on what you want, but i'll try my best. if all you're wanting to do is restore to a previous rom(for instance, if you flashed a rom to test it out and hate it) as long as you did a nandroid backup BEFORE flashing the rom, you can restore with all your settings and apps in place.
with TB i back up with it in such a way that it preserves all my settings and apps(including PLACEMENT of the apps on my docks and home screens) This is very useful. i'm not really sure why you don't see the significance in TitaniumBackup. it would be an absolute PAIN to restore all your apps from the market. or even better, REMEMBER which apps you had installed after a flash.
4) i would ALWAYS flash a rom first, reboot, check it out to make sure it loads properly. i know it takes a while but it's better to wait, then to try and flash everything at once and frag your phone. it's your phone of course, so do as you wish, but my advice is to flash the rom, reboot, then flash your theme.
good luck!!
Good stuff to know.....thanks.
In response to #2........I'm using HTC sync to sync my contacts/calendar between the phone and Outlook. I do not like using Google apps for this and HTC makes it easy to sync with this program.
In response to #3......You did answer my question. Just wanted to know if there was a faster way to recover (maybe a trick through ROM Manager) that I didn't know about.
To explain more about my Titanium Backup question......now that i think about it I guess if a custom ROM is flashed, one can re-download Titanium and restore all apps/locations on the new ROM setup, which would make things incredibly easier than downloading/placing/sizing apps individually. But, will it also restore widgets with the size/screen placement as well?

Yessir, it did for me
Newbie just get the Desire Z here
okay, the last time I flash my own phone is Dopod D900, which very simple to flash.. but that not the question I would like to ask right now.
I need u guys help me, as title above, which one a custom rom that working well and used original Gingerbread like Nexus S, original UI (not mod), stable, fast, and the function running perfect on Desire Z?
and one more newbie question, how to backup original rom (in case i need to go back to original rom), data like contact and message before flash it to custom rom?
thanks and really appreciate your responses
Um.. not exactly sure what you are asking for but here is a link to a stock Gingerbread ROM by xboarder56: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054574
It's apparently taken straight from the official OTA and is very stock. I've been using it for about 5 days now and really like it. The only thing I see missing is the cool little on/off screen animation but otherwise completely functional with no frills. Very easy to flash as well. I use ROM Manager (Clockworkmod) for backing up ROMS and phone numbers and all contact info is synched with my Gmail account, or otherwise is stored on the SIM. Not sure how Desire Z works or where you are located so I might not be much help on that.....

but except that guide, the phone must be root and S-OFF first right before flashing to ROM?
and do you know what is the app that can backup current SMS on original rom, but can restore it again to custom ROM that we flash?
Yes, you must be rooted with S-OFF to flash the ROM. As for SMS backup, I'm not too sure. I use Titanium to back up my apps, but not sure if it will back up actual SMS content as well.
okay bro, thanks very much
really appreciate your response
I'm relatively new to this ROM flashing business and, before I flash my first custom ROM, I have three quick questions that I would be very grateful if one of you more advanced developers could answer.
1. Is it possible to return to the stock ROM (or on the DInc, HTC Sense) without unrooting, or would I have to unroot and reroot?
2. What is the possibility of bricking my phone? I have seen a lot of warnings about bricking, but what is the actual probability that this will happen?
3. By using Titanium Backup, how much am I actually backing up and how much will I have to do myself to re-customize my phone?
Thank you.
1) Yes, by backing prior to your first flash you can always revert back to your backup. You could also download a stock rom and flash to that as another method of returning to stock.
2) Bricking and reading information on flashing have an inverse relationship a.k.a the more you read the less likely you brick and the less you read the more likely you brick. If you use that thing called google you will almost certainly not brick your device.
3) Not sure I can answer this one as I don't use titanium for anything. To get my phone back to the point I had it after each flash I only need to spend about 5 mins tweaking CPU, voltage and placing my clock widget where I want it. Google handles apps and contacts so that isn't a problem. You can backup your messages and what not with numerous programs. Customization can become endless i.e. themes, display tweaks etc but I don't really know how far into that you have gone.
You can follow my step-by-step tutorial, found here-Rooting Droid Incredible- for a very easy way to root.
Backup stock rom first. Don't be like me.
Where's ma rosie at?
I flashed the Optimized Shift ROM, and everything worked very well. However, I do have one more question - a patch for the ROM was posted today, and how do I install that? Do I just flash it like a normal ROM, or do I do something else?
The dev (newtoroot) should have said whether it was something you could flash over or do a full wipe (like before first installing a rom). You just flash the updated version like you did initially.
Whenever I try to restore to my backup of stock Sense/Froyo, my phone gets stuck on the white "HTC Incredible" screen, and I have to take out the battery and reboot into Optimized Sense. Because of this, it appears I may be stuck in a custom ROM. Is there anything I can do?

Make sure you do a full wipe, the same thing you'd do before flashing a new ROM, and then restore the backup.

Since it's not possible to update things like the PRL list on Sprint phones that are running CyanogenMod (or other custom mods), does anyone have a good way to switch back and forth easily between stock and CyanogenMod? It seems like at one time I used something called multiboot on my old Epic 4G, but I can't seem to find anything related to that anymore. I just want to be able to tell my phone to boot into it one time, and then have the phone go back to CyanogenMod on the next reboot.
And along those lines, is there a good repository of stock firmware out there somewhere that can be found easily? Because I didn't have root on my stock firmware, I don't have a nandroid backup or anything, and can't easily go back.

Thanks @bigmike6200 for the plug!
Mike is correct and you can get just about every firmware version imaginable for the E4GT at my site, www.rwilco12.com.
As for dual boot during my time with the E4GT I never came across a way to do it and I don't believe it is doable.

I've never used it (have used EL26CWM since forever), but what about the EL29 Direct Boot kernel? Here's a video of it in action > http://youtu.be/Rdx-kIxpitg
Keep in mind you won't be able to flash back to cm11 (or whatever KitKat rom you're running) with this older version of CWM, so keep a copy of Blasphemy 6.6 kernel (with updated CWM) on your SD card, flash it in recovery, reboot again back into recovery, then flash your KitKat ROM. Your previous data/settings should stay intact.

So i bought a FreedomPop LG G3 on sale and i ended up activating it to FreedomPop and i rooted it, and im wondering if i can install Marshmallow or cygn on it, my concern is.. before i bought the LG G3 i had a first Gen MOTO G from TextNow with there own unique ROM and when i installed lollipop on it, since the phone has no sim card the phone lost connection to TextNow and was basically useless outside the house so i had to ask TextNow to send me their unique Rom which they did and after installing it everything came back to normal.
now my lg g3 has a sim card slot, and came with sprint apps on it and showing sprint on lockscreen and everything. calls can be made from the android call app but texts messages are only available through FreedomPop text app.
i asked FreedomPop to unlock my phone and they said no problem doing it for me but i ended up not doing it since i do want to stay with them but then i want a different ROM.
so my questions are:
1.is there a way to backup an stock rom that came with the device so i can restore it just like i did on my TextNow incase i lose connection like before?
2.is there a way to backup FreedomPop like apps and restore it after changing the rom? will they work after installing them?
3.should i install a different rom?
4.anyone had an experience with such "locked" phones or even FreedomPop phone and can tell me how did it work for him?

If it has sprint apps it is probably an ls990; check in "about phone" settings to make sure. So basically follow the ls990 thread(s) to see how to get recovery on it... http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3 . Since you have root already installing a recovery should be a simple process via flashify or autorec apps - but you need to absolutely make sure you install the correct recovery file with the bump exploit or you may softbrick and have to restore with a PC. (bump is an lg g3 exploit needed for our device as we don't have a true bootloader unlock)
Re #1: if/when you put TWRP recovery on your phone you can make a backup of your freedompop stock ROM so you can restore it if you need to.
Re #2: since you're rooted you can backup all of your apps and their data with titanium or something similar. I use titanium pro because it allows you to make a zip file you can flash in TWRP while flashing your ROM, gapps, etc. & it restores your app data too; super convenient time saver. As far as will the freedompop apps work on a different ROM - they should; trying to restore them and see if they work might be the best way to go there. As long as you have a ROM backup you can restore - why not give em a try?
Re #3: that's subjective and up to you. Some people prefer stock features(especially the camera) and some xposed mods to get some extra tweaks, some people prefer custom ROMs with tons of features and the newest Android version. Again, that's on you to decide. BTW, if you do go custom ROM there are decent camera ports available that come close to stock quality.
Re #4: I have not, but I'm guessing you may need to take note of your APN settings before you change ROMs as they may be unique to freedompop & could mess up your data/text if they are not set right. That seems to be the biggest issue with people using different carriers.
Good luck & hope you enjoy your G3

Hey and thanks for your reply, yes my phone is the ls990ZVC (by the way on phone settings under brand it says "sprint" and not FreedomPop)
Q1.what do you mean by get recovery? you mean a costume recovery program on the devices main boot in-case of a problem that will replace the original recovering stock program?
Q#1. the thread you posted is for unlocking the phone? what benefits do i get from it? will i lose the 4G LTE speed like it says on the thread if i do it?
Q#2.i dont care much about camera features and also not looking for a lot of tweaks all i look for is to keep my ram and cpu power low and there for available at all time so basically having the phone act and react as fast as possible. can i achieve that with one of the different roms or having stock marshmallow installed?
Q#3. where do i get my APN settings?
Q#4. I think i know the answer to this but ill ask anyway, having TWRP recovery can save my device from softbrick right?

Hey...sorry I missed the notification that you responded...my bad.
Recovery - TWRP recovery which allows you to backup your current ROM, wipe your device, and install ROMs. You have to have it installed if you want to run any custom ROMs. It is imperative that you use the correct file or you may bork all your software, softbrick, and re-flash on a PC. If you are unsure on how to install TWRP then read, read & ask questions in the appropriate forums - & watch youtube videos if you need guidance on how to install it.
The link I posted was for your device. You can search in the threads for anything from ROMs, TWRP, root, kernels, and troubleshooting if you get stuck.
Stock marshmallow is pretty quick & there are some pure AOSP or basic CM builds available that may suit your needs...just have to sample for yourself to see what's best.
APN settings: settings, cellular networks, access point names; if you see a feedompop apn(or anything that isn't sprint) write down the fields, or take a screenshot and email it to yourself for reference.
Having TWRP recovery saves you from your mistakes. Once you get it installed you can make backups that you can always restore if you experiment with new ROMs or tweaks, etc. It is the backbone of flashing and modifying your phone.
Again, sorry for leaving you hanging. I'll pay closer attention to my notifications in the future

So i went with liquid smooth rom and after having some issues with titanium backup restoring apps i tried a few things and ended up having all system apps crashing on boot (dialer etc...) so i restored back to stock rom and everything works fine but now when i wanted to go back to liquid smooth TWRP says i cant and that the install files might be incomplete, actually it says that way about gapps too.. why is that? also having the problems i just mentioned with the rom, does that mean the rom is not stable.. or it is something i did? should i even try going back to that rom? i mean i kind of liked it in the 2 hours i got to test it before everything crashed. i went throught the link you sent me and eventually figured out that there is a rom section on top of the page where i can actually see the roms which i didnt realize that before, seems like restoring function on TWRP works great but i wish there was a way to just know which rom would work best for my phone in terms of performance which is what im looking for.

My guess is maybe you included system apps in your titanium backup? They are the ones listed in red; you don't want to include any system apps in your app restore/update.zip because they may be incompatible with the ROM you are flashing. So unless you read in the liquid smooth thread of other users having issues, I would doubt the ROM itself caused things to crash.
As far as the TWRP error about incomplete files...I'm not quite sure what that means. But you can take a screenshot while in TWRP(vol down + power) and post it up here to better explain the issue.
If you want to try liquid again try a fresh download of the ROM and fresh download of gapps(make sure you're downloading the correct gapps - LP & MM use different ones). If you run into problems with crashes again, try and flash just the ROM by itself to help determine if the errors are caused by the ROM or the gapps you're using.
I like liquid smooth...used to use it on my galaxy nexus back in the day. There are lots of good ones out there, itjust depends what you like. I usually use Tesla(aosp), but aokp and turbo are both really nice too. If you prefer CM based ROMs there are a ton of them too. Pick your poison.
So to clarify: it sounds like you did everything right - except don't restore system apps with titanium, make sure your gapps are compatible with your ROM, and have fun flashing
