Ok so im on the most current moar rom, and on ktoonsez 5-31 version, and out of no where, my phone shuts down, and when i try to start it, i get the samsung screen, and then the ktoonsez boot screen, and then it shuts off again. My phone was at 80% when this happened. After that i tried plugging it in and it still says 80% but after around 10 seconds, it shuts down again. It also did it in recovery. The second time i tried i was able to delete dalvik and cache just for hells sake and then i was able to full boot, for 1 minute and then it went off again. I tried to reflash my kernel but the recovery will only seem to highlight the zips i press on. Im trying again now. PLEASE HELP
Ok so, weirdest thing is, if i keep pressing the power button over and over my phone will boot but then die 5 seconds after i stop
Someone else will need to confirm this but it sounds like sds. (Sudden Death Syndrom) it has something to do with a bad power button. You may have to flash back to stock then have Sprint fix it.

Sudden death syndrome is when the phone continuously powers itself off due to a sunken power button. This sounds a lot like that too me, maybe a partially sunken or otherwise faulty power button.

Jiggle the power button, tap it and try blowing some compressed air into the power button area. Some people have had luck with that and have been able to get it running until they got it fixed.
Have a great day!

Unroot and revert to stock if you can't manage to fix it yourself. I'm pretty sure Sprint won't cover it and replace your phone so you'll have to send it to Samsung. I just had a problem with my GS3 where it lost service and could not pass hands free activation regardless of everything I tried, so I brought it in and since it wasn't a hardware issue or manufacturer defect, they were able to replace it.

Yes absolutely. It has nothing to do with rom or kernel. This is a manufacturer defect with all S3 phones world wide. It's a defective power button. Commonly known as SDS (SUDDEN DEATH SYNDROME)

I took apart my phone and the power button didn't appear to be pushed in or anything else. Also, I can get to download mode and it stays on however as long as I leave it. But recovery won't boot and the phone will just bootloop until I take out the battery if I try to turn it on. Is that common with SDS?

Yes, the power button failure is at the board itself not on the moving button itself. It gets to the boot image and then shuts off and starts again correct?

Yes. I was going to do my usual revert to stock with odin and reflash but then I saw this thread and how it might be a hardware issue.

Hi All,
I would like to describe something which I'm not sure if it is just me or a bug. There have been a few occasions where I have pressed the power button to put the phone to sleep and after a second, the screen turns back on again. I've tried to replicate it by maybe the way I have pressed it and it could have a residual effect on the button, thinking I want to turn it on again but I've not been successful. It just happens on and off.
Other than that, I love my HTC One X. Just like to find out if others do encounter this. Thanks! =)

Same here, doesn't always happen
Same here, but happened only 3 or 4. Also i was unable to reproduce it on purpose.
Great, at least I'm not alone and it is not due to my way of pressing the power button. Hope HTC fixes this bug in the next update. Thanks all! =)
Me too!!!
same here
Mine does this too, also mines rooted with custom rom. I can replicate it if a press the screen lock button a few times it just shuts off, no shut down or any warning about what's its done. Do we know if this is a hardware or software fault as I guess my warranty is void after rooting.
Same here. I hope somebody can provide a solution.
I've had this before on my sensation but not on my HOX.. running cm10

My samsung galaxy s2 has sensitive power button for some reason. I'm not sure if its the roms i have been flashing. But im on IML74K_Ics_Perfection_UCLD2 and if the slightest touch on the power button turn on my phone when it is off. Or it can turn it when the phone is locked. But i can even press it all the way down for even a split second without it rebooting and going into a bootloop and taking me many tries to actually boot up. Is this a hardware problem with my phone should i restore my phone to stock and return back to tmobile or is this a ics problem with the roms?

i just started experiencing this last night. RIGHT after getting my battery replaced after two weeks of dealing with that problem and finally realizing it was my battery and not my phone. then i tried to take a screenshot of my new battery stats (without all of the huge sudden depletions) and my phone reset as if i held the power button down for 5 seconds. i read about a woman in india getting her button repaired for 550 rupees ($10), but i'm wondering if i should just get a whole new unit and be done with it. the problem with that is dealing with setting up all my apps over again. i have titanium backup (root version) but the last time i got a new phone it didn't put all my apps back on my phone. maybe i did something wrong. i'll email them for detailed instructions and see if it's better to get the button or the phone replaced.
Definitely the power button! After I hardbricked and revived it, my phone had an internal short, which made my phone constantly power off my phone, restart my phone over and over, etc. Josh at mobiletechvideos had to try and work around. He disabled my power button and remapped the wake buttons. So now I wake this phone via the volume rockers on roms that support that
I digress. If you can't send it to T-Mobile to get repaired, give mobile tech videos a shot. Just 35$ and they're super swift

I wonder what's actually causing this power button thing??
I was literally just browsing email, clicking around a little fast, back to home screen and FLASH!!! my camera flashes and all this same $hit starts happening...boot loop, sensitive button, booting out of recovery mode even. I just doesn't add up to sudden button failure...does it??? Why would the camera just flash out of nowhere? Some of the boot loops would also get interrupted and start over. Recovery mode is also kind of screwy. I tried to restore to a backup of Beastmade rom and it just reflashed Sith, the same rom I've been on!! And all my other backups/nandroids are missing. Something is fishy here.
I did recently go to TWRP and have been on the Sith Rom (clones & drones).

The thing that has me curious is how mine started acting up. I wasn't even touching the power button. I was just clicking around gmail, went to home screen, the camera flashed and it started boot looping. It would sort of zap out in the middle of a reboot like there was a power issue and lot of other stuff was messed up including TWRP recovery! This tells me there is something else going on...more ROM related. Seems like all this started happening when these ICS ROMS dropped...none of them are as stable as Juggernaut, Paradox, etc...NONE of them. My power button does indeed seem defective, but it almost seems like it was a bi product of something else.

I was lucky enough to get flashed back to stock and have a warranty replacement on the way. Still has me wondering if something else wasn't up. Just seems like all the ICS based ROMs have been very buggy compared to the very stable Gingerbread builds. I sure enjoyed my rooted phone but this has been a PITA losing my device...it's my work and life! I haven't been stock in so long it will be interesting to click around a bit and see if I'm not better off stock. I'm due for an upgrade next month so I may well be on to an S3 or whatever else is out.
Just got my replacement this afternoon!!! Man...what a couple of days it's been without it! Holy crap, I had no idea.
Anyway the new phone shipped with 4.04. So that's cool. So far THIS is the most stable ICS rom I've used. :silly:

I had the SAME EXACT issue. I had to literally remove my power button because my device would reboot every few minutes. I use the volume keys to wake the device and sleep shortcut in the notification bar to sleep. If my device turns off, I have to turn it on with a USB, which is a major hassle but I've grown used to it.
Hi. Running TWRP with a CM10 Nightly (8/14 I think). Well I wasn't doing anything special and the phone decided to reboot and then just started the haptic feedback boot loop, no samsung logo. I took the battery out let it sit for about a minute and put it back in. Started on it own, got to a samsung logo and then rebooted back to the black screen and buzzing.
After everything I have tried I figured out it can boot into anything but only for about 10 seconds with pulling the battery and letting it sit. Download mode shows up then reboots. TWRP can boot up to the splash screen then it reboots.
I'm at work right now so I am unable to try any advanced methods for getting this back up, but download mode reboots worry me. Do I need to warranty it out?

This happened to my T989 a couple of days ago as well... I was pretty sure it wasn't a software brick as I hadn't been tinkering with the phone at all since putting CM9 on it a few weeks back. But an issue with the power button makes sense, I was actually able to boot it up and/or get it into recovery just by continually pressing the power button (guessing this interrupts the signal that the broken button is sending)... of course as soon as you stop pressing the button, the phone shuts off again.
I'll have to look into the mobiletech repair.
Temporary Fix to get your backup
I had a co-worker have this happen to her T989 that I flashed CM10 to. I was afraid that something had happened and she had unintentionally done something to brick the phone (it had been running fine for about a week prior to this). It is definitely hardware related, as you can just touch the power button and it goes into a screen wake/sleep fit of rage before finally hard resetting (presumably because it thinks the power button has been held down for 10 seconds). I was finally able to get it to stop rebooting long enough to get a TWRP backup and get them downloaded off of the phone so that she can get a replacement; and here is how I did it.
If you are getting boot cycle and it is vibrating every 3 seconds you can get it to "unstick" by putting your fingernail as far behind the power button as possibly and prying out. This will unstick it.
EDIT: I wanted to point out that I was most successful when I pried from the top or the back of the device. Sometimes when you pry it, if your finger slips it will redo the stick and will continue to reboot. So if at first you don't succeed...
Once you have done this, it is VERY sensitive. I literally had it start boot cycling one time after accidentally bumping the desk the phone was sitting on. Prying the button back allowed me to boot back up.
If you get it unstuck, be very careful about setting it down, turning it power button side up and even looking at it cross and you should be able to get it to stop rage quitting long enough to get a backup performed and even copied to your sdcard/computer.
I hope someone finds this useful.
On a side note: co-worker has purchased her phone outright and is planning on sending it back for a replacement. Should I flash it back to stock before that happens or since she owns it outright will they even care?
TIA,
Same thing happened to me awhile back and like said above, I sent it to MobileTechVideos and had my phone back within a week fixed and perfect. I have used MobileTechVideos twice now and both times they have fixed my T989 without problem.

I sent the rooted phone to samsung. and get free repaired. It is amazing.
About a month ago my phone randomly started rebooting out of nowhere. It was in my pocket and rebooted a few times and stayed on for a while. It kept getting worse and worse to the point where it would not even boot up. I updated the phone using Kies and it worked for a few hours, but then it went back to doing the same thing. The warranty already expired and I replaced the screen on the summer, so it doesn't have the sticker behind the battery.
Today I installed the original software using Odin and it turned on and booted and seemed to work fine for around 2 minutes, but then it restarted and kept rebooting again. I have also noticed that the menu at the beggining when you press Vol + and - and the power button is not the same one as factory. Please help me out here with any possible solutions and let me know if you need more details. Thanks.
What does the recovery say when you press the volume keys and power button? Have you rooted it since you Odin'd back to stock?
Sounds similar to others who have had the power button go bad on them, search the general section and you can read up on that issue. Since you were able to replace the screen it shouldn't be a problem for you to replace the button actuator too!

Yeah I researched and tested the phone and the power button seems to be the issue. When I put the battery in the phone, it automatically turns on, so I guess it needs to be replaced. I will look into replacing it. Thanks. If you know how to do it, please help me out.
I'm having this issue too but i cleaned the power button with a straw(Capri sun)..i just made it pointy and cleaned around....been working fine for a whole day. I avoid pressing it so i use volume to wake phone up. I hope it helps, i was all crazy about my phone like 2 days ago because i didn't know what was the problem. If anything PM me.

I've never had to deal with them but I'm sure they're reputable. No one on here would use and recommend them if it wasn't.

Google your local area for a store that deals with repairing Samsung phones.

Quite a few members here have used that service so yes it's safe. I wasn't happy with the amount of time it took, but it's a good service otherwise.
Troubleshooting Advice
Have similar issues with sensitivity and powering off. Are there steps to take to make sure it is not failure of any other type?

I took it to a repair shop, where I was told to send it to Samsung to do a heavy-duty root. The power button does need to be replaced because there is no spring when you push down on it. I have no idea if there's a root glitch. Has anyone sent their phone to Samsung? What happened? Are there alternatives?
Thank you!

It was amazing, I had the same problem but all i did was open up the back up undoing all the tiny screws and then took a can on compressed air and sprayed out the power button and its been working for more than a month now with the problem completely gone! try that first before sending to sammy.
Ok I am in the same boat. My device does not boot up, it will get to Samsung logo and restart half the time and the other half just vibrates every 2 seconds. I removed the battery while plugged in and it still vibrates. I took it apart and blew the power button with compressed air and nothing. Here is the funny thing if I bang the hell out of it, it almost boots up. Is there something that I can do less than sending it to Sammy ? If not I will sell it on craigslist for parts.

Same thing here. Only way to get it to power on is by hitting it, the harder the better it seems. After it turns on, touching the power button will make it go in to the restart loop 90% of the time. This sucks!
For me this started after I dropped my phone...with the case on and on carpet. I have also opened it up and sprayed with compressed air to no avail.

Hi Folks,
I had the same problem, the problem started when I dropped my fone on carpeted floor, here are symptoms
Fone restarts on its own, start the boot, inbetween the boot starts again, then, keeps vibrating every two seconds, you have to pull the battery out to stop it,
As soon as you put the battery back in, it restarts, again getting stuck, and then vibrating every two secods,
Here is what i did
- Cursed Samsung for making a sh***y phone - Didnt work
- Smacked my phone with whatever I could fine - Didnt work
- Opened all the screws up, took apart phone, pulled out the power button module (pcb), noticed power button was loose, put some glue into it, dried it, put it back, & ITS BEEN WORKING SINCE THEN ! It was a hardware fault, its not software !
Just my two cents, it worked in my case, I cannot guarantee if it will in your case too, try at your own risk !!

Same issue with SGH-M919. I was rooted and the rom I tried to use wouldn't work because the kernel caused some issues so I figured I would go back to stock. The device wouldn't go into recovery mode, so I flashed the stock rom via Odin. After the ROM loaded, the phone reset and I saw the Samsung screen then it rebooted and so on each time. It's not the power button as it works, has the spring feel to it and the phone would come one by itself if it was broken. So what can I do or am I in trouble?
Also, the phone will vibrate every 2 seconds

Sure, the power button will "work", but if it's constantly vibrating and rebooting, it's probably an issue with the power button. Do what it shows in the video I posted, and if you do it right it'll probably fix it. I gad to attempt it twice as it didn't fix it the first time, but it's been like 4 months and I haven't had an issue since.
Thank you but it was the kernel causing problems. Somehow, the new ROM messed up the partitions and subsequently required a full wipe including all data then I flashed the stock ROM back via Odin and it was fine. I rooted it again and flashed Bliss Pop 1.8 and I love that ROM. No issues at all. Thanks for the help. I'm slowly learning about ROMs and Linux etc.. I appreciate the help. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can learn more??? Where do I post to get past this 10 posts rule???

Wow I just realized that post was from a week ago and that was for my girls S4. We got rid of it anyway. My response was regarding my Sprint LG G3 which I am slowly mastering.
