Hi All,
Using my New ZL from a month now. My first android phone. So i have very little info on apps and other things in android.
I am very happy with this super fast phone and with lot of features.
Two things are bugging me.
1. Heat
2. Battery
After playing for 15 mins phone gets really HOT, after searching in the internet found that all games & apps are clocked at 1.5 GHZ continuously and that's the reason. So i want to root the phone so that i can control the CPU usage.
Battery drains quickly because apps constantly run in the back ground, even when not used and I want remove lot of unwanted apps which i never use.
Here are my questions :
1. Will rooting the phone erases all the data (game saved files, contacts, songs, call logs, messages, applications etc..) ?
2. Which application to use to control the CPU ?
3. Which application to use to extend battery life ?
4. Which application to use to stop applications running in back ground ?
For Rooting purpose i want use this method - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327473
Can i use the above method to Root my Phone - Sony Xperia ZL C6502 - Build .244 (India) ?
Regards,
Sam

So, I've been browsing and much appreciated for everything.
I've rooted my phone, and all is well.
The thing that I've come across is that I've removed a couple of the system APKs. I deleted the LiveWare Manager one, but it's not been removed from my phone, yet I've removed it from Root Explorer.
Also, I'm interested in getting something where I can overclock/underclock.
I'm looking to save battery sometimes, even though I have spare batteries, they drain rather quick. Any help and advice would be appreciated.
I have done the standard things such as brightness, location/gps are off. Etc.
Download no-frills from market, its free and you can underclock easy
And here you can find the list with the apps that are safe to remove and not brick your phone
Super. Thank you.
I rarely play games on my phone, so I don't really need it THAT fast, so just took it down slightly. I can always change it back if needed anyway. Just trying to save battery so might aswell underclock it when I don't need it that fast.
Also, I've followed that list, but some of the stuff hasn't gone, such as Play Now and LiveWare Manager
"Battery life " one of the most important aspect of a great overall android experience..This guide is to help you get the max out of your battery and getting that little extra performance out of your S4 pro (yes,,no performance degradation here )
This guide is compiled over a duration of time and have been tried and tested by me
Following are the steps for that lil extra juice :
1)Root(obvious )
2) download greenify (a must-have by oasis feng)and greenify almost all apps(including games) expect some messaging apps(apps shown with gcm logo in greenify) ,,,and if you want to get that lil extra minutes then go for the donation version of greenify, it lets you greenify some system apps to....also don't kill apps with appkillers(real battery hog)
3) Switching Stamina mode On(especially after the 4.2.2 update)...and carefully selecting only "most needed" apps to be excluded (if you don't want to break notifications)
4)download startup manager..and disable all unwanted apps at startup
5)remove all unwanted bloatware and battery saving apps(they usually do nothing to save your battery, instead they run in background and eatup your battery)
6) no under-clocking, no over-clocking
7) maintain a healthy battery charge history ( don't charge unless battery is less then 20%.,,then charge without interrupting to 100%(don't keep it charging for to long if it reaches 100%,,this will over-charge the battery)
8 ) If you're on 4.2.2 ,,surely you're facing the battery bug, which is really dangerous for the battery (because it bring the battery % down to zero ,without giving you a chance to reach your charger)....So to fix this you'll need to recalibrate your battery by downloading easy battery calibration from playstore (I've calibrated my battery and fixed the bug )...the app will guide you how to calibrate the battery(easy)
9 ) Don't use the "trickle charging" method recommended by some battery saver apps...I've used that method and it shows no improvement in battery life instead it'll drain the battery in a very strange manner ("modern"Li-on batteries should not be trickle charged Google it if you need more info on this subject)
10) some suggest under-volting...it'll surely get you that extra "precious minutes" but you must be brave enough to try that out..
Use this tricks and you'll definitely notice improved juice
If you'll like to add more "tested tweaks" to this guide let me know...
More tweaks and tricks for a better battery going to be updated soon(as soon as I'll test and confirm them)...

Undervolting is effortless and harmless, so is underclocking.

Very nice and welcome tips. Thanks a lot mate.
Thanks. Lower the number of widgets you use helps a bit too.
What does the stamina mode do exactly ? I like to to toggle everything myself to be sure nothing is left behind (Data, Wifi, Gps, NFC, Syncing (apps/widgets/accounts), Bravia engine, Brightness...)
VERY happy with my great battery life ! Rooted, battery calibrated and never use stamina since I control manually. But if stamina does everything I do mamually then ill use.

I don't know if anybody has noticed this but there's no hibernate now widget for greenify I'm wondering why the xperia home launcher won't allow it but nova and others recognize it :/ I also complained on the app market to the developer in hopes that they notice and fix it by some chance.

Thanks for the tips. Applied most of em mentioned. Just wondering if sony used batteries similar to the note 2. We could use our phones much efficiently upto a couple of days
Javascript
Hey you might like this, I noticed that using the browser uses loads of power. Apparently javascript in the browser uses a lot of battery (search google for "Who Killed My Battery: Analyzing Mobile Browser Energy Consumption"). I've turned off js by going to Chrome, Menu, Settings, Content Settings. Hopefully this will eke out the battery a little bit more!
Hope this helps
Edit: After just a day of js turned off, I'm already finding some websites insist on it being turned on, which is annoying. I had hoped js would be more optional, but for some web designers it seems to be required. Oh well.
Nice try... Do you know if other browsers can be a way around ?

Hi everybody
I had bought a Xperia Zl 3 days ago and I love it (I used a Xperia P before) now I have 3 point that I don't like of it
1. Sony UI (is not ugly as hell but it can be better)
2. Battery (it goes very fast for me)
3. Sony update service (they are so slow releasing upgrades)
So, the problem is the second one, is normal this phone eats so much battery?.. But there's something else, the download is not normal for me, the phone when is full charged and I disconnect it begins to down the battery in pair numbers I could say, from 100-98 from 96-94 but really fast, just making calls?
Then, when 60 percent of battery arrives the download begin to slow the speed I mean the battery is during more....?
Is this normal? What do you think? Sorry for my bad English and long text...
Cheers

Welcome.
1. Sony UI:
You can install the launcher / theme of your choice. Many people go (in Google Play) to:
Nova Launcher,
ADW Launcher,
Apex Launcher,
Holo Launcher,
GO Launcher EX,
MiHome,
Regina Launcher,
Smart Launcher,
SPB Launcher,
Next Launcher,
etc,
only to return, months latter, to the original Sony launcher (this is my case).
2. Battery:
Please remember the power management options (stamina, low battery mode), and also turn off GPS, bluetooth and data transfer unless you really need it (Wifi usually consume less power than 3G). If you want more, there are some really good threads in XDA about how your battery could last longer.
3. Update service:
Our system (10.3.1.A.2.67) is now way better than it was when Sony launched it at first. The users that don't have changed anything in the System folder have received updates in an optimal frequency: I bought this mobile less than one year ago and have already received a dozen updates (including some patches in apps).
Congratulations, you have a good mobile.

Root, Greenify and TiBu the bloat - that's the biggest killer of any smartphone, regardless of manufacturer. Granted, Sony is better than most for not including a lot of crap, (I'm looking at you Samsung!), but if you're never going to use the program, why bother having it installed, cached and possibly in memory?
Root your device and TiBu uninstall the apps you don't want. I reduced my usage from 1GB of RAM at idle down to around 400mb mark.
I greenified almost all apps, and now I get roughly 10% drain over night with all features on, WiFi, NFC, Bluetooth and 4G, no Stamina Mode!
thanks to all of you for your answer but i'm using the leaked rom without root? =/... i'm thinking in use cyanogenmod how good or bad run this rom???
Hello!
Previously I told you about a way to increase battery life on the battery-hungry S3 Neo (and just about every other Samsung device ).... Here we come!
The following items are to be noted before you proceed:
1. Results may vary depending on your device, your firmware and how you use it.... I did this method on a rooted phone with stock firmware. However, it can be made on a non-rooted one with any available firmware, but the results are not so guaranteed... Give it a try nevertheless!
2. If your life or business depends on live notifications from so many messaging and calling apps and services and keeping your device online 24/7/365, this method may disrupt your life... Don't say I didn't warn you!
3. In some rare instances, improper application may render your phone partially or completely useless, if it weren't bricked! I have absolutely no responsibility for any damage that might occur to your device, data, business or even life..... USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!
4. Some apps here are paid ones. If possible, please suggest free alternatives for everyone to use here.
Your inventory for this method:
1. A Samsung phone, or probably any other Android phone (Mine is an S3 Neo)
2. A rooting method (highly recommended) - DO NOT ROOT IF WARRANTY IS A CONCERN TO YOU!
3. A few useful apps: Clean Master, Du Battery Saver Pro, BusyBox, YAAB, Xposed Framework, Greenify (Donate package), JuiceDefender Ultimate
Steps:
1. Root your device by any available method (Just do a search here for a method that works for you!)
2. Install BusyBox
3. Install Du Battery Saver Pro (or Battery Doctor as a free alternative here) and set it to kill apps when the screen goes off.. Put the apps here on the ignore list to keep them alive
4. Install Greenify (Donation Package) and hibernate just about every app you installed, except for the messaging ones (if you use them frequently) and any other app your life depends on. For the system apps, just hibernate the Google apps (except for Google Play Services) and any other bloatware you may find and activate all experimental features (You will need Xposed Framework for the hibernation of System apps)
5. Install JuiceDefender Ultimate and set it on the "Balanced" profile... You can customize it later
6. Install YAAB and set it on the Auto mode. Don't forget to keep it on the Foreground from the settings to keep it running
7. Install Clean Master, set it to kill the apps on screen off and put the apps mentioned here on the ignore list... Clean your junk files every now and then
The results: From 8 - 10 hours of battery life to more than 20 hours, including plenty of time of active use
Again, be careful when you use it... Wrong application means damage, so keep backups ready at all times!
Let me add something else to adding more battery life for our I9301I Beauty -> Decrease battery drain
I want my phone faster (I flashed a stock rom but it's still slow) because after my Xperia Z2 it's very slow and I don't like that. If I flash Xperia SL firmware to my Xperia S then it'll be clocked to 1.7 ghz? My phone's bootloader can't be unlocked so I can't overclock it or flash another Android version (like aosp 5.0).
please help because it's very slow

Hmm what i did with my old Xperia S is I would disable the apps that i dont use(the system apps like hangouts, google+ etc), I installed a cleaner(clean master, also ccleaner), delete unused apps, in developer options: window, transition and animation scale set to 0.5, the stock launcher is very laggy and slow so i installed nova launcher(also there is a VERY COOL lollipop styled launcher called L LAUNCHER its just like stock lollipop even better than nova), turn off or reduce syncing.
These are all the things i did without root. You didnt say if you were rooted or not. If you ARE then there is more than just this that you can do

you need to identify what makes your phone slow and under which circumstances. Is it slow during normal use or while playing games? Is it slow because there is not enough RAM or because the CPU speed is slow? If you are using web app then maybe the internet connection is the bottleneck, etc. There are a lot of apps that can monitor your phone's resources, so that you can decide what needs to be done.
Please describe the situation.

I have an Xperia J, which is supposed to be worse than your Xperia S, and I also find that it is slow (compared with those hi-end phones like Z, HTC One, etc.). The start-up time of the apps is slow, and I guess there is not much I can do to improve it other than optimizing the RAM usage so that it can switch between apps faster (of course, I can increase the CPU frequency a little bit if using another kernel, but the difference is not much, and I prefer stability and longer battery life). I'm using several apps to hibernate the apps not in use and to disable unnecessary services (such as Google Wear Service, because I don't have any wearable device, and the analytic/banner/bug report services), you can have a look and try:
Greenify - by Oasis' Feng - with Xposed module
Disable Service - by WangQi
(sorry, i'm not able to include links in post yet)
Hope it helps.
