I have unlock the bootloader, rooted the phone, and installed custom recovery following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201148
still running stock rom at the moment.
I installed Titanium Backup Pro, and wanted to move some apps that I don't use often to SD card, but cannot find the option from Titanium menu anymore.
What I found out is that Titanium uses the external directory "sd-ext/app" for moving the apps from internal to external memory.
However, my current SD card is mounted as ext_card and also sdcard1?? I don't know why both of these directories point to the same location, is it something that Sony assigns? or is it how Android is configured right now?
Anyhow, I just want to know if simply renaming the folder ext_card to sd-ext would work?
If not, how can I remount the sd card as sd-ext without affecting other things that are already linked to it?
Thanks.
edit: admin, please move to the appropriate section.
found a work-around.
Just use root browser to create a short cut of "sdcard1", then rename it to sd-ext.
that's it!

I tried that, but I still have no options to send apps to my sd card. When i restart my note 10.1, the shortcut that i created (sd-ext) is no longer there. Help please?

I've been trying and trying and TRYING to accomplish your solution, yet I'm not able to modify any files or folders in the internal storage. When I try to do so by any means, my device freezes the app trying to create new files (in this case Root Browser, but it happens with anything else like ES Browser, apps, desktop applications, etc).
I just CAN'T write to the internal storage even if my device is rooted. I've tried to solve this but I just CAN'T. I don't know what else to do.
Any help is appreciated beforehand
THANKS!!
Hi,
I've only had Nexus phones and tablets before and have never had external SD card support. I'm on the stock LG G Pad right now (i.e. not the GPE). I tried to move folders to the external SD card using ASTRO, thinking that this would move my synced rdio and google magazine files to the external SD, but the apps don't seem to read the files anymore.
Is there a guide on how to get files to recognize that there's an SD card and an external SD card? Is my best bet to root and use TiBu?
THANKS!

There's an app called folder mount which will move folders to the external SD card and link them such that the app will think the folder is in the same location and still work just fine. I've used it on my galaxy s4 without problems, however you do need to be rooted to use it. My problem is I'm on a rooted g pad and can't seem to get it to work. If you do root and it works, please report back, I'm not sure if I have a defective device.

Thanks a ton. I'll probably root after the holidays, since I am scrambling to get things done before then and I want to make sure that I have Google Movies access on my vacation! I'll let you know there when I do it.

I've installed both and I'm rooted now but still can't move or install anything to sd
I had the same problem; couldn't write, etc although from a PC or installing the same SDCARD in another device worked fine.... called Google Support; no help by the way and after searching/reading for a while determined the problem.
This link explains how to fix... basically Android is not accessing the proper "name" of the external card and you just need to add one line to fix permissions.

Hi there,
As we all know there is an issue with moving files from internal to external storage due to implements from kitkat.
I was just wondering if there is a was a solution to this without rooting?
I am unrooted and was hoping there was a fix for it.
Thanks in advance.

I have been looking into this, the past 3 days and from my research I could say the answer is... no.
Everything I found on the net requires root access.
On my previous phone, a Note 3, I faced the same issue and when I formated the ext sd from within the phone, the problem mysteriously went away and I had -full- access to the ext sd.
Tried it on the M8 but no luck.
Why dont you also give it a try (after backing up your ext sd ofcourse) and tell me if you had any result.
My M8 is international version by the way. No carriers.

I'm rooted but I think I remember being able to transfer files between the internal and external storage by connecting my phone to my computer and doing it on my computer. Try that if you haven't already.
yes

Yes my friend, via pc it is possible. I suppose the OP,like myself, is looking for a solution from within the phone.
Thanks.

I believe the question is: can something be done without rooting?
I am looking for a way to make SD card writable to apps also.

With the Update to 4.4.3 HTC included a file explorer to give a solution for this kitkat security feature. I already flashed the OTA to 4.4.3 aka firmware 2.22.401.4 and in fact moving files from the internal storage to sd card works with the file explorer delivered by HTC.
Hope this answer helps!?

Thank you.
I made apps access external SD card this way: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54696085&postcount=13
Hey fellas.. Had a question.
I threw in a 32gb micro SD card loaded with movies and shows.
For some reason it is not allowing me to delete any files from the extsd while it's in the device (tab s 10.5). Something about Kitkat not allowing read/write privileges.
Any way around this besides removing the extsd and doing it in my laptop? [emoji106]
i think only to fix it to root your device or trying one of those without root https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.b1.android.filemanager I got tired so i just root also delete some usless apps lolz I got the same issue
I think there is an xposed mod/ apps in the play store that can have read/write privilages. But you have to be rooted I think skyhigh custom kernel fixs sd car problems too.
Use the Samsung file manager. It has privileges to modify any contents on the external SD card.

You sir win the prize. I was able to delete my movies with the stock file manager. When would have thought? I was trying to use ES file Explorer
Ever since i went from a 4.3 rom to a 5.1 rom I can not write to my external sd card. I have tried going back to 4.3, other cards, changing permissions to no avail.
does anyone have a solution on how to fix this. I have tried asking in the forum thread for my Rom but got no answer at all and I have searched but none of the threads that show have any definite solutions.

Do you have root explorer. Is the rom rooted? Have you tested your sd card in other devices etc? Need way more info

I am rooted and running a custom rom at the moment. I have tried the card in other devices and my computer and get the same error which leads me to believe its the card. The weird thing is it will read files from it fine no problem but I cant delete or add files even if i change the write permissions.
If by explorer you mean something like ES file explorer I have tried various ones as well as the supposed external sd card fix apps.
