I know about and have seen the spreadsheet created by neif. I was wondering if there's any sort of rundown that compares the roms by features, and not just raw stats. Don't get me wrong - the stats are important and big thanks to neif for compiling them.
But i'd like to know what each rom brings to the table besides just which one is the fastest or has the longest battery life.
Right now off the top of my head the few features i'd really like to have would be:
working tether
working hotspot
removal of all the sprint apps, other then maybe sprint nav
I've used unrevoked on my phone, so it's rooted, but that's as far as i have gone so far.

Read a ton in the development section. Each of the features you list are usually noted in the OP of each ROM thread. Way too much info to copy and paste!
yeah, i know about the threads in the dev section. Bit of a pain to read through them all though, which is why i was asking if someone had compiled a list similar to what nief did, except highlighting features rather then performance.

So, I'm a drifter - always read threads on XDA but never registered - Awesome community.
Love the Honeysense HD ROM - It is AWESOME!
7.2.1 was brilliant - a pure class of a ROM, just upgraded to 7.3 - not fully tested it yet BUT feels smooth and fast.
Few niggles with it though:
Can I change lock screen back to the shiny ring lock? I kinda liked that. Gave the theme a nice contemporary feel. How can I do this?
Also, preferred the icons from the 7.2.1 ROM - how would I go about using those - or mixing and matching those I like?
When I add text based widgets to the home screen - they always show up in Bold and not their standard style. That's quite annoying as some text based widgets don't fit like they used to.
Last but not least, how can I change the apps | phone | customise bar at the bottom so it's like the one in 7.2.1?
Any advice on how to achieve the above, links etc will be great! I know - this is my first post, sorry to be a moaner!

This is an open letter addressed directly to your development teams, which I hope will sooner or later arrive at the right places. I`m an avid Android user and fan since quite a while and was also an active part of the XDA development community (mainly Milestone, Desire HD). I really appreciate what you have done with the Android OS, especially now with the latest and greatest – ICS. Nevertheless with all the beauty and customization of Android, there is still a lot of room to improve, especially when it comes to user configurable customization. Following I want to illustrate, where I strongly believe, based on my experience in many threads here at XDA or my home forum, where there is a lot of room to improve.
@ GOOGLE - Users like new features, but not all users are equal.
Whether it`s widgets, shortcuts to settings or toggles, everyone has different preferences. So please add user selectable features to next ROM generations, that can be activated by users (say customers). If you follow XDA carefully, you will recognize some sort of consensus, which kind of customizations people would like to have in future stock ROM`s. The following features should all be user configurable to reflect the different tastes and user patterns. I will only post the Top features, but these would already add a lot and allow users to customize their experience.
1. Battery icon option with 1% steps in statusbar
2. Quick toggles to settings in statusbar
3. Custom shortcuts for Lock Screen
4. Reboot option in Power Menu
5. Position of clock in status bar
6. Customize Auto Brightness
7. T9 dialer
8. “Unread only” email tabs
9. Home Screen animation
10. Widget color and transparency
11. Color Themes (see Windows Phone)
@ OEM`s - Some users like custom skins, other`s don’t
We all know that OEM´s need to differentiate their products by hardware and user experience, BUT…. There are many consumers who fall in love with a certain phone, but don`t buy it, since it is covered by a custom UI (say Sense or TouchWiz), which some not only don`t like, it also adds huge delays to updates and in some cases completely prevents these. Please understand that users love choices and also having the latest version of Android on their phones. Also note that with the arrival of ICS, for most users suddenly stock Android delivers a better visual experience, then current custom UI`s.
1. Present your custom UI as add-ons, which allow the user to choose in settings, whether he really wants to use it.
2. You can break down your custom UI in Theme and features. That way the user can both select the visual aspects and the features he needs.
3. If you allow this freedom, you will sell more products and the result is win-win
Bottom line: If both Google and OEM`s understand and respect, we all have different preferences and like to have a choice, you will have even more loyal followers.
@ Community – it will be interesting to hear your opinion. Please don`t discuss details like more features you would like to see, it`s way more interesting whether you agree with the general approach or whether you are happy as it is.

Instead of wasting time trying to convince google or samsung just install a custom rom which has many of these features. Give your support and donations to the awesome developers who do this on their own time and are always open to your suggestions.

The problem with such 'requests' is that Google is probably looking at a much bigger picture than us. Some people actually get turned off by too many customization options.
..and not everyone likes them. For example, I think percent in the battery is stupid and annoying.
Your effort in writing appears to be good but sadly I think your post is going to be unnoticed by the people you addressed it to. Good luck.

Why? I keep thinking about this too.
On the one hand, it's useful if you want to test battery against usage patterns etc. You also get better estimates of when you'll run out of charge.
On the other hand, it's extra information you have to remember and could easily do without, it also gives you a habit of wasting time by looking at it repeatedly and remembering that information. I never have to worry about running out of charge before I get home so it's kind of pointless.
I see the battery percentage every time I unlock my device. Percentages on a battery image are cluttered, and doesn't increase my battery life. Instead, I watch myself staring at them. I can't judge my battery life off of them, because drain is not linear most of the time. I just have a personal distaste for them.

This would defeat the purpose of Android would it not? Google does not want to do all of this, because that's what the developers are for. They make stock android with some enhancements they think will push android to the next level and let all the devs make stuff for us to use to customize our phone.
If i want these features i download apps.
I've always agreed with this, from day one. However, OEMS pump out Android phones more than they do Windows phones for one simple reason, because they can modify Android and they are not bound to upgrade it. Yes, there is that whole 18-month window thing, but it takes phones sometimes 18-months just to get one update. Windows on the other hand requires phones to be built to handle long-term updates, as does Apple. Personally, Google needs to really force manufactures to come closers to upstream AOSP. There's really no need for locked bootloaders, or closed-source skins such as Sense.

How is that working out for windows phones?
Think their model is working for them? So far, wp7 has been an afterthought in most stores. Most of them are EOL'ed before they see much of updates. A long update cycle is worthless without...updates.

Android phones really are not a shining example of longevity either. The general philosophy of the OEM's has been to release new phones, not upgrade existing ones.

1. i don't wanna see 1% battery icon, because it is annoying. if you want it, install ROM.
2. quick toggles is great thing. i don't understand why galaxy nexus doesn't have it since the manufacturer of gnexus is samsumg?!? all samung devices has quick toggles but gnexus. though, it is not really a big problem. there is GREAT app from market called Notification Toggle and it's even better then stock samsung's quick toggles.
3. i do not care. i guess it is up for developers, not for google.

I believe his original point that was overlooked by nearly everyone in the thread was "user customizable," i.e. the ability to change or toggle most of the features. Of course many of us might not wanna see battery percentage, but have we not seen just about every feature in our ROMs have the ability to be toggled on/off or easily customized from a settings menu? Remove the need for all fifty Nexus devs to put essentially the same basic features in their ROMs that everyone wants to see, allowing them to focus on further development.

Nah, I didn't miss it. One of my points was that too much customization options scares some people away. You can increase, and hinder sales in such cases.
Personally, more customization options on phones is a must. Everyone bangs on about android being really customizable, but im already bored with the limited options.
Custom roms arent the answer because none of them work properly and have things missing. Even stuff like miui, oxygen and all the roms on Htc Desire dont work 100 percent and ive always had to return to stock.
They need to start offering more STOCK customization options that work if android is going to continue to flourish.
Ive yet to find a phone or rom i can customise to my tastes that works perfectly, still on hunt for perfect phone and i doubt i will ever see it.

- stock android, but if coming from e.g HTC, when setting up the phone give me a choice whether to have sense or stock.
-unlocked boot loader
- let me change the colour scheme. Amoled screens last longer on darker colours so let me gave dark scheme. LCD I don't care.

This has more or less been my experience too. Plus, you get the options the dev chose. Some you like and some you don't.

You probably won't. The reason being that the majority of people don't even know those options could exist. What most people really want (need even) is simplicity. Put a smartphone in your average person's hands and they are overwhelmed. Again, I am talking about the majority which isn't XDA users. XDA is the 1% of smartphone users!
What Google product managers should consider is a tiered option system. Basic simple options for the masses and then an expert user set of options buried a layer deeper for the people like us who really want it a specific way. However, these additional options cost a lot of effort to develop and regression test. That cost needs to be weighed against the perceived benefit.
Thx for your feedback so far, but it's important to note, that this is about giving users the choice. So if you don't like percentage battery, just don't choose it. I'm also aware I can flash Custom ROMS for this and I probably flashed more then most here, but don't forget that 90% of Android users don't even root their devices. So it would be a great advantage, if they get this flexibility out of the box.

I think its time for me to pick a ROM. Which ROM delivers the closest stock experience but still being highly customizable?
By closest stock experience I mean smooth UI and stable OS. I read aokp is good but are there different versions, where do I find them etc etc.
I've tried to do as much reading as possible but when I go into the development section of the forum I just see a bunch of numbers and words that don't make sense to me lol

I use Codename Android, but that's just my preference. I'm using Franco's kernel. I'm also just waiting for milestone four of aokp.

You probably want to go with the normal AOKP (I find the difference to the other ROMs to be minimal, matter of taste I suppose. I stick with AOKP since it's the first one I used, runs great and gets a lof of support), the differnece to the other AOKPs is minimal, mostly optics.
As for which build, if you want to be 100 certain that it's run smooth and without any problems, go Milestone 3.
I would go Build 24 though since it is stable and offers more functions. There is a chance you migth run into a problem or two but nothing big (I'm on 24 as well)

If you want as close to stock as possible then give this a shot. It's the v4.0.4 that leaked a few weeks ago. Both the wife and I have been using it since then. It's stable, battery life is decent and it's not cluttered with crap.

I decided to go with aokp b24. I have a few questions.
-I am using aokp b24 with nova launcher. I know b25 is coming out soon, and I also like the black exodus theme by nitro as well. I've done HEAVY customization with nova launcher and my widgets such as simple text and minimalistic text that I don't think I;d have the patience through sitting again. So my question is do I have to do a full wipe/factory reset if I upgrade roms?
-I've seen peoples lock screens that have quick apps instead of the stock unlock an camera, they have phone + sms etc etc. With this rom I can select 2 apps, I set them as sms and phone but only the sms one shows up. Any idea?

1.) Apparently roman said you don't need to do a wipe going from 24 to 25, but there is a chance of bugs/things not working properly if you don't wipe. You can save your preferences under Nova Settings --> Backup. And then you can restore once you redownload Nova. Also, you can save your minimalistic text settings under "Backup" as well. That way you can just restore your settings with a simple click. (The restore files will be saved to your SD card, which don't get wiped if you erase data).
2.) Are you sure you selected the "quad" lock screen setting under "Lock screen style"? If so, try to mess around with the "octo" setting and the custom app locations (i.e. 1, 2, etc.).

High Stability (bug-free)
Compact size (minimal bloatware)
Active development (support)
Good battery life
Good Performance
Recommendations would be much appreciated. Please specify why you recommend a particular ROM. Thanks in advance.

Use the at&t and sprint s3 android development forums.
Check the titles for TW VS aosp, os version, blah, blah.
Read the Ops for specifics.
I also look for roms with a lot of chatter in the thread, and roms that appear to be regularly updated.
The problem with ur question is that if u get 20 answers you'll get 17 different roms...

Do they represent a good cross section of available ROMs or am I missing a bunch of good ones? In particular, I disqualified the second option since several apps couldn't write to extsdcard even though I have installed and executed SDFix. SDFix is not required for the first option and it does everything I want. I also tried CM11, but it seems to have more bloatware than SlimKat and no obvious advantages. Gummy kept giving me FC's on various gapps apps. In summary SlimKat has floated to the top. My only complaint is that I had to tweak the dpi, but the texdroider app fixed that. What are some good options that I'm overlooking?

on the TW side there is Wicked X 8.0/Barebones and Tribute rom and AOSP you can try CarbonRom or some of the newer roms like Broken OS, GrapheneROM a optimized CarbonRom, Spirit Rom, TMS3-Dark_Droid-3

Thanks. I'll check those out. I forgot to mention, but another criteria is that any candidate ROM must be available on both the Sprint and AT&T variant of the Galaxy S3. I've eliminated quite a few on that basis.
Update: Based on a bit of Googling it appears as follows:
Wicked X -> Sprint only
Tribute ROM -> Sprint only
Carbon ROM -> both Sprint and AT&T
Based on that I'll investigate Carbon ROM and if it seems appropriate, give it a try. I just checked out Carbon ROM for Sprint. It appears the forum petered out back in February and the download links are broken. Think I'll pass on that one. Also, I hesitate to try the newer ones you mentioned since my most important criteria is stability (ie, bug free). Thanks again.

Keep in mind there are quite a few ROMs (including Carbon) for our device, that are very active on Google+ and not here.

I do see that it offers both the Nova and Google Now launchers. Nova has an extensive settings page which includes a handy backup and restore feature. I can't find anything similar with Google Now? I can't even change the grid (icons per row and column). Am I missing something?

I'm pretty sure the base of the rom is based off of slim not sure though. Well broken os is very smooth and fast never had any force closes battery life is great on it.
For the Google launcher it doesn't have anything really you can customize. So no you aren't missing anything there. I would say to use nova.
CarbonRom is back up here is the link for the D2LTE which will work for both your S3's and here is the Change Log if you want to check it out.....

That's the official site.....the reason they are nightlies is because the developers add and remove features all the time it's in the channel log..but the basic functions of the phone always work.....so they are stable nightlies....
Thanks for all the feedback. I've tentatively selected SlimKat. It's the slimmest of all tested and seems fully functional. BrokenOS seemed nice as well, but it was slightly less slim, much less active development, and didn't offer any noticeable advantages. I'd still be interested in recommendations. As mentioned, a candidate must be available for both the Sprint and AT&T variant.

Thanks. I had some time this morning, so I installed the latest Carbon ROM nightly. Here are my comments so far based upon limited testing:
Closer to stock than SlimKat (eg, dpi, icon size, etc)
Google Now toolbar top of all home screens
Calendar not included in ROM nor gapps (so installed Google Calendar from Play Store)
Titanium Backup Pro complained about installed SuperSU (so flashed Update-SuperSU by Chainfire)
SuperSU app tends to hang (temporarily clear via reboot)
Several icons appear on Lock Screen (they seem to taken from notification screen)
Fully functional so far (with exception of SuperSU)
Less slim than SlimKat (Nandroid 951MB vs 783MB)

You see...that is the problem...BEST can only ever be opinion...they are all the BEST for the people using them if you check the individual development threads.
Battery performance will vary from user to user....ROMs have little to no effect on battery performance...it is how you set up the kernel and your usage/preferences/signal and such that affect it..not the ROM.
You can only learn about stability by reading the development thread. There may be an app or dirty flash or lemon phone that makes something unstable for one person and not for the other 1000's of users of that ROM..and maybe that one guy comments here and not the other 1000.
Again performance is kernel related and the settings in the kernel....learn how to ajust your kernel settings mostly through trial and error.
Active development...you just need to check the first page of the development section...the ones on the top page with most replies are the most active.
So that leaves compact in size...search through them for the words debloated and look at the download size.
The rest will be mostly opinion and things you will need to learn by trial and error.
Googling for best ROMs will turn up garbage as again there is no baseline...did everyone start with a clean flash? Was the download good? Is there decision for BEST based on ludicrous items like color? Included launcher? You may as well be asking what's the best curtains to use in my living room? You will get everything from price, to color, to thermal blocking, to texture, to cleanability.....all relative to the person using them.

Thanks. I understand what you are saying, however, I have found the comments to be useful especially in terms of narrowing down the number of candidates to evaluate. In the final analysis, I must do my own research. At the moment, my personal favorite is SlimKat and I use it as a baseline for comparing others.
