First of all, please forgive me if any of this is answered already somewhere. I'm using the XDA app and AFAIK, it's impossible to search within a forum (can only do entire XDA).
I'll be getting this phone in about a week or two and need to know some things:
1) What Android version is the latest ATT firmware at? 4.1.2 or 4.2.2? Or something else?
2) Does the stock firmware have a USB Mass Storage option?
I cannot connect my phone to my car for music playback without UMS (MTP doesn't work).
2.1) If the stock firmware doesn't have UMS, what custom kernels support it? Or how can I enable it permanently?
3) How do you like your phones?
I can't wait to get mine!
4) I plan to stick with the stock ROM for a while, but just root and debloat it and install CWM and a custom kernel.
Are there any custom ROMs that anyone absolutely recommends over stock? (Just like the opinions here).
(FYI: I'm experienced with rooting and flashing, underclocking, and undervolting)

I may have found my answer to #2. I obviously can't try it yet since I don't have my phone yet, buy I can tweak build.prop once rooted in order to not only enable UMS, but also force it. I never realized it was that easy!
Unless anyone wants to answer the other questions, this thread can be ignored for now (until i get my phone and if i have issues).

1.) 4.1.2
2.) No it does not have USB Mass Storage. Here are the options it does have:

2.1) Dont know. Only have used stock ROM with Stock Kernel.
3.) Love it. Came from the Note 1 and wont look back.
4.) I dont plan on trying anything but stock for quite a while. While I do miss some options from 4.2.2, they are not so important that I want to flash a custom ROM just to get lock screen widgets. I can live without the few things that was added. I just rooted and debloated my stock and it is a gem.
I need UMS in order to connect my phone to my car for playing MP3's off my phone and controlling them with the steering wheel controls.
How can I enable UMS?
Setting, custom ROM, custom Kernel, mod?
Can anyone answer this?
(And YES, UMS is available on Jelly Bean 4.1.2. My Galaxy S2 had it, but I had to use a custom Kernel to enable it).
ALSO. Can someone test this APK and tell me if it works?
http://www.freeware4android.net/lg-.../usb-mass-storage-toggle-download-230200.html
You install it, and just plug in your USB cable and it should auto enable UMS. Uninstalling it should disable this.
(I'd do this myself, but I still don't have the phone yet).
OK, so my current phone is running Jelly Bean 4.3 (CyanogenMod 10.2) and I just set it to MTP and it works in my car. When this phone was running ICS, MTP would not work in the car, so either it is CyanogenMod allowing MTP to work somehow, or Jelly Bean tweaked MTP since ICS.
I am now thinking that the LG Optimus G Pro set to MTP will work in my car. I can only hope though :fingers-crossed:
I might as well finish this thread.
I just got the OGP yesterday and the first thing I tried was to connect it to my car. It works and yet it doesn't.
Even though the phone only does MTP, my car does read the internal SD of the phone. This would be OK if the internal SD's available space was truly 32GB, but because of how the phone is designed, the actual memory available was more like 22GB. If you install a bunch of apps, then that space will decrease even more.
I didn't take the chance to see if this new phone has the same issue as my old phone, where the car only reads a VERY small portion (30 out of 1000+) of the music collection.
I decided to just use my phone as an MP3 players for my headphones and I bought a separate memory card for my car. It's not what I'd prefer, which is a single device with all of my music on it, but it works.
Overall, I am absolutely loving this phone though! :good:

To be honest, this is not tablet mode at all, it has nothing to do with silly build.prop hacks. This is the first and only Android rom to feature true Hybrid mode. This rom lets you scale and project every app, every widget, even system components individually. Remember, android is modular, everything is an app: Lockscreen, navigationbar, dialogs, popups, keyboards, widgets, and your regular apps of course. Apps have the capability to switch into various designs or layouts according to the device they run on. This can result in a complete new experience as many apps will transform to the better. Now for every element that you like choose a mode (PhoneUI, Phablet/Nexus-7UI, TabletUI) and/or a size. You are 100% independent of the system DPI which runs nicely in whatever value it has been assigned to. You do not need to boot your phone into a certain DPI. Neither will most of the changes you apply require a reboot. You will not suffer from the myriads of troubles which normally haunt you under build.prop tablet mode. Your market, phone, etc. will all work, apps won't shrink on you unless you shrink them yourself.
This project will entirely transform your device, but retain the aesthetics and the feel of your phone.
CWM Install ROM from here (MD5: 9E01D449FC3D6BB9442FAD05A7CCB668)
CWM Install Gapps from here
CWM If you're coming from any other rom, Wipe Cache / Factory Reset (May work without fullwipe from older PA versions or AOSP JB)
CWM Wipe Cache Partition
CWM Advanced->Wipe Dalvik Cache
Reboot
If you have trouble booting right after you flash, try flashing the kernel via fastboot:
extract boot.img from the zip
boot in to bootloader (turn off phone, hold the vol up button, and plug in usb cable)
fastboot -i 0x0fce flash boot boot.img
reboot
This rom is based on FreeXperia's CM10 and therefore anything that doesn't work there, will not work here.

Camera does not work
If you have an issue and you want to call our attention, here's what you do:
Try everything you can, find solutions for yourself. Wipe caches, revert all your settings you have made, go back to your stock Kernel, factory reset if you have to or reflash the rom. Assume that the issue is on your side and try your best to isolate it.
Search this thread and Cyanogenmods aswell (its our base) for possible reoccurences of your issue and hopefully solutions that may have come up.
If you think the issue is important enough that we should cease our work and look into it, post your issue, BUT ...
... stay friendly, do not demand anything, do not threaten
... explain your issue as precise as you can, name the exact apps and conditions that cause trouble, help us to replicate the issue right away. If we can't there's no way we can fix it and your post will simply clutter the thread
... collect evidence, keep in mind this is a developer thread so even if you are not one, do us the favor and research how to record logcat. logcat is the single most important help you can give us to resolve your issue.

The memory management was changed from ICS to JB, and with the camera libs being proprietary (Sony won't release source), a lot of work remains to make the camera work. However, on a positive note, we may be able to use libs from a different Xperia device as soon as Sony ships JB for one of them.
FWIW, camera aside, with the latest changes from FXP137 this rom runs very smooth and seems quite stable :silly:
Hope Sony releases them cause that is the only thing that is making me not flashing them
Is there any interest in a CM9 based version of Paranoid with a working camera? Or should I just put the project on hold until Sony releases JB camera drivers in the next couple months?

A couple months seem so far yet it seem so close. Hopefully, sony would release them in a few weeks. But seeing how the latest line of flagships are still ICS, it would be a miracle for them to release drivers anytime soon.

Sorry, but no can do. I gave up on the phone and switched to a different one so I'd have no way to test...
Ok, might seem a strange question but I come from a Samsung Galaxy S and I'm still feeling the HTC very different...
So my situation is this... I'm at Portugal but I bought an HOX (international version) from a British friend locked to O2. I've network unlocked it (ebay code), unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. It still boots up with an O2 splash screen. I tried googling for the latest HTC stock Rom as that would be the way to go about with the Galaxy S but doesn't seem the way to go with the HTC.
That's a bit of the reason why I'm posting this because I'm not even sure what to ask exactly or google for. So here's my main questions/issues...
Am I right to assume that the stock rom on my phone is not an HTC stock rom (like the thing that would come with a sim free phone) but a O2 stock rom? And the reason I'm asking this is because there is a "news" tab on HTC UK, France, etc advertising an OTA update to Android 4.0.4, Software number: 2.17.401.2 on 8/10/2012 (I thought it was today but now I think it meant 10th of August as there are other threads about this dating from then).

So the version I have is Android 4.0.4. with Sense 4.1 but the software version seems older than what is announced on the HTC site: software number 2.17.206.2. Why is that? Because the rollout to my phone is made by O2 and not HTC?
If my assumptions are right, how do I go about flashing a stock HTC ROM because I won't be able to update OTA anymore? I'm assuming that since I'm not in range of the O2 network.
Sorry for the long post but like I said I don't even know how to formulate a short question and gad to give you the broader picture. Any help would be much appreciated!!
Yes, you still have a carrier branded ROM, unlocking the bootloader and rooting doesn’t change the it. You have to flash to change the ROM. Since you have already unlocked the bootloader, you might as well flash a custom ROM to get the most out of your phone.
Head over to dev section, there are many sense based custom ROMs like Revolution HD, maXimus, Viper X etc. The first two already have JB versions (based on a leaked HTC JB ROM). I use Viper X because it has lot of customization options, but they haven't released a JB version yet. Or you can go completely AOSP with Cyanogenmod.
Viperx here as well and enjoying every minute of it. Almost too many possibilities if that's even possible. I
I'll have to take a look at the those custom ROMs, I know it's a bit silly owning a droid phone and being a bit afraid of that stuff but I never had a very good experience with those... always my fault though.
I do realize that a custom ROM is probably a must with this phone, as its been a beast tamed by a lot of software issues that brings it down.
Just a couple more questions... If I fail miserably installing a custom ROM and have to roll back, it will go back to the O2 ROM or is it possible to flash a sim free HTC one? (I already know half the answer but anyway...) Never mind... first pinned thread on the dev forum
And because of such possibility, how does OTA updates work? I'm assuming the phone connects to some kind of HTC server that has the approved carrier update? Or is it done via the carrier, hence rendering my phone virtually impossible to update unless I go to the UK?
Thanks for the help so far guys!
The phone connects to an HTC server using the Internet, not some magic GSM data transfer system, so it doesn't matter where you are in the world, provided you have Internet access from your phone.
Sounds like you have the latest version anyway (for now).
You can't install an official unbranded ROM, but since you're unlocked, you can go with a custom ROM. You can't get the official JB leak because your CID won't match.

Thanks Ben, I spent a great deal of time yesterday looking for your first answer. It's probably so evident I couldn't find it anywhere Again, it's my long years with the Samsung to be blamed... you updated it with the rubbish Samsung Kies (a serious PITA) or via Odin plus whatever ROM.
I've also learned a lot by going through the tutorials here, especially that we still don't have the S-off so that's why things aren't so simple yet.
I was considering the JB with Sense+ too but my CID is (I think) O2---1... so no, it won't work :crying: But Viper X looks good, especially because you can get it very close (or similar) to the stock look. Part of the reason I'm loving the HOX and not regretting getting the S3 is because how simple and clean it looks, without all the gimmicks and clever ways of doing this and that. It might not be so intuitive (at least I'm not used to it yet) but I've already realized it's a lot more to the point than the Samsung stuff.
Well, now running ViperX 2.7 and although I have most tweaks turned off, it's great to have back stuff like the percentage of battery, quick settings like internet network and sound profiles when long pressing the power button and quick settings for stuff like bluetooth on and off from the drop down bar.
Best thing is probably not being dependent any more of O2 updates but still having those with an OTA.
Couldn't still figure out how to make the drop down notification window solid and not transparent. You can tweak the notification bar transparency but not the window? (sorry, these things aren't probably called what I'm calling them but I think you know what I mean).
Thanks again for the help guys!

This method is called manual flashing by using Odin downloader and the original stock firmware, for we can’t upgrade on kies or OTA anymore after installing unofficial firmware on our devices previously.
Disclaimer: We shall not be held responsible if anything happens to your device by following this guide. Proceed at your own risk. This procedure is for advance users only, typical users may only upgrade only thru Kies or via OTA and may not use this method.
Important!
- Back up all important files before proceeding. Although the Internal memory and microSD card are both left alone during after the flash process for this firmware is a non wipe version. But all your settings and configuration will all be reset. So, be sure to have a back up all of it for safety.
- If your device currently runs with any custom ROM, you may ask any assistance first from your ROM developer on how to safely return back to official stock to get rid of any issues.
- Fully recharge your phone’s battery.
- Use Windows-based OSX PC/laptop, Odin will not work on MAC OSX

http://www.hotfile.com/dl/202091699/c92decf/T989UVMC6_T989TMBMC6_TMB.zip.html
1) “Extract” or “unzip” the downloaded stock ROM to get the .tar.md5 file.
2) Run Odin3_v3.07.exe on PC desktop
3) In Odin - DO NOT CHECK the RE-PARTITION check box, only both ‘Auto Reboot’ and ‘F-Reset’ left checked.
4) Click on the PDA button then browse to the folder where you extracted the stock ROM “tar file”
‘T989UVMC6_T989TMB_T989UVMC6_HOME.tar.md5′
5. Reboot the phone in download mode
5) Once the phone in download mode screen, connect the PC USB cable To Phone. In Odin, the ID:COM box will change its color and its an indication that the device is connected properly to PC. If you still do not get any results, try another USB port on your computer.
6) Click the Start button to begin flashing.
7) Wait until it finishes or watch out for the word “PASS”.
Once the phone completely reboots, perform wipe/factory reset to get a fresher firmware installation.
1. Hold Power and Volume Up together, this will switch the device into recovery mode.
2. Release Power after holding it for a second but continue to hold the Volume Up button until recovery menu appears.
Select wipe cache
Select wipe data/factory reset.
Select reboot
That’s all! your Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989 now fully installed or restored to the original Android 4.1.2 Jelly bean

Does this have WiFi Calling and WiFi/ Bluetooth Tethering? I've been dying for a JB ROM that has WiFi Calling and wouldn't mind going to a stock build to get it.
I'm actually tempted to use this phone again as my main.
Biggest reason.... Camera.
My Nexus 4 is nice but when I did a comparison and how it performs in low light, it blows the N4 out of the water.
Sad....

My idea is that the problem is in fstab.recovery, but I'm not entirely sure on that. Could you please share "device-related" changes for TWRP?
Sure thing, I hope have some time in front of a PC this next week, I'll put up a new build with sd-ext fix and post a github link and clean up the op. Sorry just haven't had like ant quality PC time in the past few months

Alright, finally got around to flashing this. All the basic functionality I used CWM for, works perfect in TWRP. Pretty awesome
Man, this is awesome! I was using some old TWRP 2.2.0 version i found on some weird chinese site after failing to build it myself. Thanks fr thins man!
awesome job demkantor
and i can gladly take all the credits for this tool :d LoL
Why switch?
Hey @demkantor,
great work again, I guess, thanks. We vision users are lucky to have folks like you still working on our device.
One overarching question--why switch recoveries, and if I do, to this TWRP or your (or Nevergone's?) CWM? I have used 4EXT (I think at your suggestion, in fact) ever since I rooted my phone in August, 2012, and no problems. I have kept up with all the latest ROMs in the Flinny line (and a few others) including 11.0, though I have now stepped back to his last 10.1 build while KitKat needs fixing. My needs are pretty basic, I suppose...I just flash the occasional new ROM, make backups, occasionally restore them (like in going from 11.0 back to 10.1.) I rarely touch adb...it just hasn't been necessary. I am perfectly happy with my phone, and marvel at its longevity!
So, stick with the latest 4EXT, or jump to something newer?
Thanks,
p-d
ps still at the U? Go to Al's for me sometime, I miss breakfast there.
Thanks!
In truth I still prefer 4ext myself, its my favorite recovery but development on it has slowed over the past year. The only reason I bothered to make this was for @AYEHAN who has a broken SD tray and needed to be able to sideload a ROM, currently 4ext is lacking this feature. So if your current recovery is still working for you then I would suggest to stick with it, TWRP is nice and I use it on most my devices (as 4ext isn't available) but if it ain't broke don't fix it!
Yeah last few days of brake before the new semester begins, and for sure will go to Al's, best whole in the wall there is!

One major bug I came across, is it will no longer flash roms. Like, regardless of what the rom is it just won't flash it, it spits out
assert failed: get prop("ro.product.device") == "
E:Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard ,
and I know these roms all work since it was flashing them beforehand. Just thought I'd let you know
*Edit*
So any rom other than G2Slim won't flash for me. CM10.1, Flinny's CM11, etc. It's so odd
*Edit 2*
I installed CWM v5 again just to make sure it wasn't a problem with the roms themselves or my sd card, and things install fine, so it must be a random bug with twrp, hopefully a very rare one at that
I just tried and found a similar result, without looking into it much I see there are a couple update-binaries used with various ROMs and this build works for one and not the other, at least that's what I see so far as I'm coaching my friend on how to do this as the phone is with him on the other side of town right now.
I'll look into a fix for this as it would be nice to be able to flash all Roms not just some, thanks for the bug report!

Fix permissions and terminal work fine, I'll try a theme if I can work out how to do it but I don't have a spare SD card I can test partitioning on. All in all great work
Thanks for running those tests, with school and not having my g2 in front of me I haven't had a chance to pick up this project, but I should have my phone back shortly. One of the things I was planning to do (after all functions are 100%) was make a few themes, which is quite easy if your interested
http://www.teamw.in/twrp2-theme-guide
It surprising how customizable and fun a recovery can be so if you get around to it I will for sure link any you make and hopefully will have a few of my on in due time

Just tried a theme, works fine. I would make some but I have no working PC right now. Might be able to unpack and edit an existing one on device though
Needed to get a recovery compatible with SELinux support in order to install latest CM11 Alpha 3 (Flinny's).
Works fine. None of the errors above when installing CM11 and gapps.
Great work!
tried this alot of times , plus flash the recovery 3 times but could not sideload an image :/
e:/ sdcard not found something error
sorry for that, I'm sure it's a stupid question, but just to be sure...
there is no different way except flashing this .img using a pc...right? I tried using TWRP app last night but it wants to know which device is and it's not listed
thank you a lot
Alex
If you want I'll make you a flashable.zip or you can use a terminal emulator on your phone, just download to SD card and name it recovery.img
Then open up emulator
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

Have you tried the Development form? This thread has a stock version you can download also, as well as the rooted, deodexed, zipaligned version:
[ROM] Stock UCLJ3 Rooted, Deodexed, Zipaligned( 2 Versions)
(Sorry, I am too new to post links, so you will just have to go to the development form, page 1, about half way down, above is the name of the thread.)
Thank you for taking the time to reply. Iam aware of the links in the Dev thread, but wanted to return the phone to an unrooted stock firmware so that Barclay's banking apps work and there are no VoIP issues for things like Skype and what's app. I want to pass the phone on to my son.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994902
The first link is for the pure stock UCLJ3 Rom. The Dev-Host website will redirect you to an advertisement if you are not a member when you click download. So if you go to the site, become a free member, and download the file. I downloaded it just now to ensure that it still works.
Be sure to slap dman3285 's thanks button!
Thank you once again
The Link to which your refer describes the firmware as....
"Here is the Stock UCLJ3 Firmware for ICS
It is:
Rooted
Deodexed
Zipaligned
Batch Optimized
NOT debloated"
Using 'rooted' firmware does not allow the use of Barclays banking app's.
Kind Regards
Phill Beckman
Give sediROM a try!
While installing sediROM you can decide if you want to have it rooted or not!!
Would be nice to know if that fixes your problem.

Thankyou for your response.
I installed sediROM - using TWRP without issue - (chose un-rooted option) - Skype and WhatsApp voice call work correctly and my son is busy customising his 'new' phone -
I note that Bluetooth file transfer does not work but this appears to be a known issue - I'm trusting that the headset profiles work as this was a stated aim for this ROM fork, and his pending birthday present is to be a set of Bluetooth headphones.

really glad to hear that. Do not hesitate to click thanks here and in the sediROM posts
That keeps me motivated
yes bluetooth file transfer is an issue but I thought it is for the latest beta only (v2.0)? You use v1.7 right?
You're totally right the reason for sediROM was to be able to use bluetooth headset profiles
plus fixing a bug in ICS which removes all existing bluetooth pairings after a reboot. Both (and many more) fine in sediROM
All the best

Yes using 1.7 able to pair with my oneplus one but BT transfers fail.

Thanks dude. I already find the cause for that problem and a first fix was successful. I will implement the fix in the ROM build and if all went well I can release v2 finally.

Hello to everyone! I would like to mention that I can't return to roger's stock as well (2.3.5). I have cm11 and I try to flash via odin3 v3.04 the I927RUXKJ5_I927RUXKJ5_I927RRWCKJ5_HOME.tar.md5. Odin process seems to be successfull, but when the phone reboots, is freezes at roger's welcome screen . I 've tried different stock roms and ways but nothing.. I try to flash these roms via TWRP (not odin) but nothing again . When I flash any custom rom there is no problem at all. It seems strange to me that everyone can gurrantee a successfull custom rom upgrade and if someone wants to downgrade to original rom, there are a lot issues. Please, I would like to install my original rogers 2.3.5 rom. If someone could give me a successfull tutorial, i would appreciate that. Thanks in advance.
