Well, as the title suggests, I just got my new Nexus 7 in the mail. Played around with it, definitely liked it. I wanted to get it rooted and used this guide on the website to try to root it. I installed the drivers, enabled debugging and developer mode and USB debugging, saw the serial as it said, and then I unlocked the bootloader and tried to root my tablet. Things started to get wonky. The toolkit said that it was completed, but my tablet stuck on the loading 4-colored X screen. It's been about 30 minutes and I'm thinking that my device is bricked. Then I tried to restore the device but the toolkit isn't recognizing the tablet. How do I restore my tablet, or do anything with it?
Please help, as I don't want to waste $220 on 4 hours of having a working Nexus 7.
UPDATE: So it wasn't bricked it, as I was able to return to the home screen. After a day of using it though, with the Nexus being buggy (freezing and crashing), it just died. I can't boot it or anything. It's plugged in, but nothing's happening.

Download factory image and do a factory restore:

I personally don't like toolkit. Recommend to root it yourself step by step.

Alright, here's the good news. You haven't bricked your nexus. You can and will fix this yourself, without a tool kit.

Same thing happened to me a month ago. Most important thing, don't freak out. Hold power for 20sec to hard reboot, then as soon as google logo appears hold down volume button to enter bootloader screen. From there you can do anything

Did you boot into the phone after you unlocked the bootloader but before you tried to root? Do you have a custom recovery installed?

if so check if you still have your internal storage, i had the same problem as you but there is a bug going around when u unlock your bootloader your internal memory is wiped see this threat for feather explaining: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380913
In my case i booted to fastboot and did the command fastboot -w and then it created new user partitions and then i could flash the stock image and then it worked again

No custom recovery, but I have an update:
So after using the vol- and power buttons, I was able to bring the Nexus back to its home screen for a day (so it wasn't bricked), but it was really buggy- freezing on my and shutting down. Now though, I think it's bricked; I can't power it up, can't do anything. So I can't turn it on now :/. Probably gonna take it to see a repair store sometime soon.

Try plugin it in the charger and wait 5 min and then try to boot it with power+volume down

If you're not rooted, it's just a stock update. There isn't any more risk than there is for any stock version, and you shouldn't lose data. If you buy a Nexus 7 2013 a few months down the line, after current stock with JWR66N is sold out, I believe it'll come with that update out of the box.

Unrecognized in ADB or fastboot? Can you get into bootloader (boot while holding power and volume-down)? If you haven't tried fastboot while the phone is in the bootloader, and you can get into bootloader, try "fastboot devices." If you can do that, download a custom recovery and flash it from fastboot. Then format data and reboot.

TWRP for the WiFi: http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/flo/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-flo.img or LTE version: http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/deb/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-deb.img
Unpack the platform tools zip into a folder, copy the openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-deb.img file into the same folder and open a command prompt into this folder (hold shift while right clicking on the folder and the option should be there).
Try to turn the nexus off by holding the power button for 30 secs, connect it via USB to your PC and wait till the screen shows the white charging information. Now press the volume down button on the nexus and keep holding it while you press the power button. After a moment you should see the green android with the open belly and some device information on the screen.
Now go to the command prompt you opened and enter: fastboot boot openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-deb.img for the LTE or fastboot boot openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-flo.img for the WiFi version.
After a few seconds you should see the recovery screen, if it asks you for a password just hit cancel, there choose "Wipe" and then "Format Data" and confirm that you want to format data. After it has done its stuff go back to the main menu and choose reboot and let it boot into system. Now it should work again.

That would be great, but when I plug in the tablet to the PC the screen doesn't show any information. That and I can't turn on my Nexus in any way, including the volume down and power method.

How long has it been charging? I'd give it a couple hours, then try the bootloader again.

hi everybody,
I'm usually more active on auto forums but I need your help.
wanting to install a custom rom, I'm a but lost in the manipulations. Last night when I wanted to turn on the tab (only with the power button), I had the google logo that was displayed at the top right and the small rectangle of recovery menu (start, recovery, reboot bootloader and poweroff). With buttons I could choose one of four functions. I had access to the recovery menu, when I choosen restart bootloader, it well reboot and poweroff worked well too. By when I clicked start I had a small line at the top left telling me "boot failed"
I try to flash everything thanks to a tutorial.
So I'm DL the original elements but still the same issue. Having struggled until 3am I give up. This morning when I tried to turn on the tab, I did even more than what I have explained below whatsoever with the power button or volume down + power nothing happens the screen stays black.
Any Ideas?

If you bought it from a local store or if a local store carries it, I'd recommend just retuning for a new one. Haven't seen anyone having your problem. If it won't even turn on, then any store should exchange it, or return it, with no questions ask once they see how your tablet is behaving!!

I'm seriously thinking of this solution but I'm afraid before they give me a new one they send it to their after sales service. If they find out I have rooted it and unlock the bootloader they will make nothing for me
Have you tried returning it to stock to see if it'll boot then? It could just be a bad flash.

I tried every thing.I downloaded nakasig-jwr66v-factory-aebc7b11 and I flash everything but nothing happens. Yesterday evening I was able to boot it (even if it was a bad bood I had only access to recovery mode), but from this morning I tried everything but nothing happens. Even if I plug it to my PC impossible to boot it. The PC do not recognize it (I checked in ADB mode and fastboot mode but the PC do not recognize it)
Good English friend. Can you boot into TWRP? If yes, install any custom ROM after a thorough wipe in recovery. Good luck!

No it doesn't works. For the time being my first to issue is to succeed to boot it at least as yesterday evening.
So if I'm understanding you correctly the Nexus 7 won't even turn on at all now, right? Try holding the power button down for at least 30 seconds and see if it will turn on.
Also, the Nakasig image is for the 2012 version of the Nexus 7 and won't work with the new one. The new 2013 version is named Flo but Google hasn't released the factory images for it yet. However, if you can get the device to power on and back into bootloader mode you should be ok as there are a few unofficial versions of the Flo image on the forum.
One last thing, to quickly boot into bootloader mode hold the Volume Down button while pressing the power button. But try just the power button for at least 30 seconds first to see if you can get it to turn on at all.

+1 Try plugging it in for awhile too. You want to get to the bootloader - the screen with the Android where you go through the options with the volume buttons. Once there,you can use fastboot to flash TWRP and fix from there. Again, stay away from the OLD Nexus files.

I tried to keep on the power button during 1 min with and without charger and pluged to PC : nothing happens. I tried the same thing with volume down + power and nothing happens either
I'm not sure what might help next. Perhaps someone with more experience will come along with advice. If it were me I would probably return it and tell them the power button stopped working.

So you flashed everything from the file nakasig-jwr66v-factory-aebc7b11.tgz? It's for the 1st gen Nexus 7 Mobile version. It would also flash the bootloader and radio. I am guessing that flashing the wrong bootloader might have bricked your device. Someone please correct me if i am wrong.

the old nexus 7 or the new 2013 model with a camera on the back? is yours wifi only or 3g capable?
The only thing i can think of is to plug into your pc's usb port and hold the power button for 30sec.
Then unplug from PC and press power button for about 15sec and you should see the google logo - if not, i think your bootloader is bricked from flashing the wrong one.
If you do see the google logo, keep holding power and also press vol down as soon as you see the logo - should get you into the bootloader.
Messing up the bootloader is the only way you can brick a nexus, feel sorry for ya man
noob question: so you are using a Nexus 7 (2013) and you flashed an old-nexus-7 ROM on your device? If you're using the new one, here is the ROM for the new one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44054613.
I have just had the same problem. Flash the old nexus 7 kernel on the new one, luckily I fixed it
There is a different forum for the 2012 Nexus 7 here. This forum is for the 2013 version.
the whole process went through fine. then at the end it says your device will take 5-10 minutes to reboot. its been 20 minutes and im still stuck at the recovery screen (whatever the screen is called where the droid's stomach is open)
i tried booting into the phone and i can but im still not stock so this obviously isn't working for whatever reason.
any thoughts?
I don't know but the toolkit forum would be the place to ask or read the FAQ on the toolkit.
Next time, don't use a toolkit. Use fastboot.

I'm continually amazed that so many people will literally waste more time trying to get a toolkit to work than it would take for them to learn how to use adb/fastboot, and punch in the commands.
I looked at a toolkit once to see what all the hubub was about. It took longer to read the options on screen than it did to learn all adb commands.

we dont know, you used a toolkit. it tells you nothing really.
learn fastboot, there is a thread about the whole return to stock with detailed instructions.
If you can, get into the stock recovery and wipe cache and data. I've gotten stuck at the Google screen once before when I relocked and flashed stock images. Oh and the three posts above are all correct, this is a Nexus, no need for tool kits.

Turn off your phone, press and hold down Volume Up and Down keys + Power button at the same time until fastboot (bootloader) mode (image of an Android with Start) appears then release the keys. I have a Galaxy Nexus, GSM version. It was working fine about ~3 weeks ago. I turned it off and removed the SIM card as I upgraded to a new phone.
Now I've turned it on and it just hangs on boot showing the animated X.
I tried recovery mode and get a "No Command" error.
I've never done anything to this phone before, in other words it's just running standard Android. Any advice? I've looked through some past posts but it seems like a lot of people have rooted the phone with custom OS, etc. I've never done any of that. So trying to figure out what the issue is with this phone. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you so much for the info. I'm trying this when I see the no command screen but nothing happens. The phone is just completely locked / frozen. I have to remove the battery. Any additional help would be much appreciated!

Maybe you don't even have a custom recovery installed yet? Not necessary, but since custom recovery are far more convenient than the stock one, you might wanna give it a try.

The phone is completely stock. I've never done anything to it so not sure why I'm having this issue to begin with. But what custom recovery would you recommend I try? Is there a link that you can send me? And how would I install it given that I cannot even get the phone to boot?

Install the correct ADB and fastboot drivers and files on your PC (I can't help you with this).
When your GNex is in fastboot, connect it to your PC, wait for it to get recognized.
Download CWM recovery here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager - you'll have to choose your device variant (GSM/Verizon/Sprint), and choose if you want touch or not. Downloaded file should be an *.img file.
Open a command prompt window on your PC, enter "fastboot flash recovery *PATH-TO-YOUR-RECOVERY*.img" (no quotes). After flashing completes, just boot into recovery and do what you should do.

Just want to thank everyone for all of the help. I really appreciate it. Andy, I did try several of the steps that you mentioned but for some reason the PC just wouldn't recognize the phone in fastboot mode. I tried both the Google and Samsung drivers.
In my searching I found this post though:

And realized that I should check samer's advice again. Turns out that I just wasn't pressing those two buttons in the correct sequence. I was doing it simultaneously and I guess you have to do it serially. At any rate was able to restore factory and now the phone is booting. Wow. What a pain. Still not sure what caused the phone to blow up in the first place.
At any rate really appreciate everyone's help.

Download CWM recovery here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager - you'll have to choose your device variant (GSM/Verizon/Sprint), and choose if you want touch or not. Downloaded file should be an *.img file.
Open a command prompt window on your PC, enter "fastboot flash recovery *PATH-TO-YOUR-RECOVERY*.img" (no quotes). After flashing completes, just boot into recovery and do what you should do.

Ok so here it is. I never post things on XDA because usually if you take the time to read and do some searching through google you can resolve your problems.
Anyways here's my problem. I traded my Blackberry Z10 (piece of sh**) for a Galaxy Nexus at a pawn shop. :highfive:
I was pretty happy to get my hands back to an android device and start flashing custom Roms and all that buzz.
It was instantly rooted when i got home, flashed a slimkat rom on there and had fun for a bit. :good:
Then my data connection was not working, so i flashed an AOKP Rom over top of the old rom without wiping anything previously. I did make a backup through TWRP but then i couldn't touch the screen in TWRP (power button still locked it though) so i gave up with that and tried CWM. NOTHING.
Now, 5 fuc***g days later, after searching, downloading, flashing stock images, following directions. I am still staring into this annoying as hell "X" boot loop.
I swear to you that i have tried absolutely everything I can possibly do to get it to stop.
-downloaded about 3 different google factory images
-tryed to un-root and re-root
-tryed to wipe the boot.img, system.img, userdata, bootloader, recovery, cache
-re-locked and un-locked bootloader (oem)
-I have tryed two different toolkits (Wugg's and Skipsoft) and i swear i have pushed every god damn button on both toolkits by now
-I even called google just to see what they would say, they just got me to go into the stock recovery and factory reset and clear the cache part.
-then google support told me to call samsung , just so they could tell me to do the exact same thing as google.
-the drivers are all installed correctly, but it will only recognize it in fastboot
-I cant even try an adb logcat command to see what is happening because USB Debugging is not on (not like i can turn it on)
Please if you think there is something that i have not tried go ahead and shoot at me with some kind of direction
***UPDATE**** to anyone who is reading this
I have fixed the bootloop. all thanks to legija (SEE- (http) forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f634/unbrick-dead-samsung-gt-i9250-galaxy-nexus-gt-i9100g-gt-i9300-1465412/)
it had somthing to do with Omap. - LINK for omapflash- (http) d-h.st/XNv
if you may have the same problem as me follow these steps
1. Download the zip file created by Legija
2. Extract zip to whatever location you're comfortable with (I used Android directory)
3. Open up Device Manager (Hold down Windows Key, press R, the type in devmgmt.msc and press OK)
4. Go to actions menu, select Add Legacy Hardware
5. Choose install manually, then have disk. Browse to where you extracted the zip, select the 'inf' file in usb_drv_windows
6. Choose OMAP, you'll get a popup if on Win 7, continue anyway (driver not signed)
7. Once completed with driver, pull battery out of phone, then plug it into USB
8. Double click omap4460_tuna_hs_pro.bat to start the process. Once you see "Press any key to continue..." close the CMD window and proceed to step 9
9. Unplug from USB, put battery back in, and power-up!
10. Extra step - depending on what's been done, it may 'brick' again - suggest to do a restore or a wipe reinstall afterwards to be certain (mine bricked again next reboot)

I can put into odin mode, but if i plug it into my computer the device inst recognized. It just stays at the "downloading... do not turn off target" screen. So im not to sure how i would go about re-flashing it.

Honestly i have even tried the ODIN program 2 different ways (just as xamxamas suggested) and now im thinking that the kernal has something to do with it.
Well I think you have a fried eEMMC (your internal storage is dead). When you reboot everything was as it was before no matter what you did?

Ok, so I have a 32gb 2013 Nexus 7 which is now bricked and i didn't do anything to brick it! Really!
It's stock, not even rooted... nothing. Never got around to doing anything to it... just left it alone.
So last night it was having trouble connecting to my home wifi so I rebooted it. When it came back up, it got stuck at the white "Google" logo, and ... nothing... no animation, no nothing.
I left it for the day and came back, and it's still doing that.
So - dug a little and decided I'd do a hard reset.... i can get into recovery (stock), i cleared the cache... but now when I try to wipe data/factory reset... it gets stuck there too.
I've got the Android guy with "Erasing..." below him. A blue progress bar that is NOT MOVING and text ...
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
and that's it just sits there.
have tried it twice already and nothing.
Any suggestions?

You can use it to restore to stock without using recovery mode. As you open it you have to download some packages(just accept).
I will attach an image below to show you what it should look like.
Secondly you need to enter bootloader mode as shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV1ffMCXRg4 (Skip to 2:30)
Basically you make sure the tab is off then press the volume up button then press the power button and hold both.
Back to the Nexus Root Toolkit. Click Flash Stock+ Unroot while having the Status as: Soft Bricked/Bootloop just like in the picture below.
Just accept all the request made by the program and you should be fine.
@kenrothman don't worry, your N7 will be fine. Our device has a bit "nervous" /data partition. The method from the post above should work.
Alternatively, you could also do some other methods with price of data lost but try this first.

Did you ever use ADB / fastboot? I prefer to do such things manually as the tools might do something else than I want.
If you didn't use it yet, there is an excellent guide by comminus for N7 2012 how to flash factory image with fastboot.
Find it and in the beginning is the part with installing drivers, SDK etc. That part is identic for the N7, also bootloader unlocking.

Try to ADB Sideload the files to the nexus If your pc can't detect a device or the drivers are not set up correctly.

sorry, didn't have much time over the weekend.
i had previously tried to use 'fasboot oem unlock' on my mac, but that hangs as well.
i'm beginning to think this may be a hardware issue... i did a support chat session with google who basically told me i had done everything they could think of and they sent me to Asus. I haven't tried with them yet.
I'm willing to completely wipe the thing to bone stock at this point... i mean, i hadn't even rooted it... never felt the need to.
The "factory reset" from recovery really should just stomp on it, but that hangs too.
I will probably give Asus support a shot... esp if it's hardware and needs to be replaced or whatever.
