hello all, I have a few problems with the process of sideloading google play onto my ouya, i am not a skilled android user but i am familiar w/ them and am a good reader/listener but i havent seen this issue anywhere so i hope someone here would be willing to help me out.
my goal was to sideload google play apk on my ouya. I successfully rooted it, installed the xposed framework and used ADB to push the ps4ouya_script contents onto my system.
it worked, but not fully. some of the files were successfully transferred but 2 technically did not. they show up, but are broken.
com.android.vending.apk and com.google.android.gms.apk are showing up as 0kb in system/app and I cant remove them. everything i try (overwriting via file managers, command line, re-pushing) all have no effect.
what can i do?
i have read and followed multiple guides here and on ouya forum to no avail. i'm sure i messed something up but i am at a loss as to what it is.
After further reading it sounds like ouya toolbox might help me with the removal of the broken system apps and this mod might be useful for a reinstall: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359390
I'll try it and report back, but if anyone has any thoughts/insight I'd be grateful.
EDIT
Ok problem solved, Mod Collection For Ouya [link above] was able to [properly] install google play and it corrected the problems I had. If youre new to all this I highly recommend using it as its idiot proof. well, it helped me
Now for some MC4 action!

Hi,
Like everyone else I have to say"Follow these instructions at your own risk" I do not take any responsibility for any thing that happens. It worked for me so it may work for you!
Trio 4.3 Internet Tablet M4302 Model Trio 4.3MID 4.0C by Mach Speed Technologies
I just picked this tablet up. I have successfully rooted it and have installed a working Play Store. I now have access to all my apps that I use on my Galaxy Note 10.1.
To root I used the instructions from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
Once I had root I wanted to get Google Play Store on the tab. I found a couple of places that had information concerning adding Play Store to other devices and kind of pieced the info together to come up with this solution.
1. Download gapps for ICS. http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
2. Unzip file
3. Navigate to the " System/app " folder and find "phonesky.apk and setupwizard.apk"
(You will need to copy these two files to your tablet)
4. Once files are on tablet use something like "Root Explorer" to copy both to the "system/app" folder of the tablet.
(The folders will need to be mounted as "R/W" so they can be written to )
5. After the files are copied to the proper folder, you need to edit the permissions for both.
6. In "Root Explorer" long press on each file and choose "permissions"
7. Edit permissions to read "Owner: Read, Write" "Group: Read" "Others: Read"
8. Reboot and launch Play Store
Frys has this for $49...thinking I might need to order it as a music player for my 2 month old!
I used this method to get Google Play Store to work, But its not rooted. At least you can download the files.

works great thanks successfully rooted and installed google play on my trio stealth lite 4.3" internet tablet m4302 runing android 4.0.4 :victory:
Mine came rooted
Thank you for this post!
Just wanted to give a heads up for anyone who finds this thread through Google or whatever, like I did, that it's possible your device is already rooted.
I bought mine today from Big Lots - branded as a: Trio 4.3" Touch Screen Media Player for Android by Mach Speed Technologies - on the box (well blister plastic wrap thing that is Hades to open...). The instruction user's manual, however just calls it a Trio 4.3" Internet Tablet.
(Specs from the box.)
Android OS 4.0
4.3" Capacitive Touch Screen
4GB Internal Memory with Micro SD Slt (Up to 32GB)
Built-in WiFi
Speaker
Auto Rotate for Portrait & Landscape Viewing
1.2GHz Processor
Rechargable Li-on Battery
Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you, and let everyone know to check your device first. There may be better ways to check, but there are a couple of apps in the Amazon App Store called "Root Checker" - don't get the "My Root Checker" - it has crazy pop-up ads - I deleted it in seconds. But just check to see if your device is rooted. It could save you some time, and potential headaches.
Well, jsut confirming that this guide works. In the root post, I used the stadard root method...if you are like me and got this for a little one, they wanted apps. Of course I couldnt open until today...but it really works. I just dowloaded the root explorer apk (a quick google search worked) and installed it...i can upload a screen shot if necessary

This. I picked up two of these devices and both were already rooted.
Dude, does anybody have the factory rom? I don't even have custom recovery but, I fukt up and tried to install cm9 and it says to reset the phone but, the touchscreen wont work. I dunno if I'm gonna be able to fix this or not. I've hard bricked a lot of android phones and still fixed em somehow so maybe I can. Any help?
C
Sent from my MB886 using xda premium
My Trio also had root access right out of the box. Followed the instructions right down to obtaining the "root explorer" apk. Worked like a charm, no issues at all. Now I just need to find a custom rom that will perform better than stock. Thanks for all the info.
Hulu Plus
Since this is the best thread for this tablet I've found. I wanted to ask if anyone has gotten Hulu to work? I have installed many different versions including the latest and all of them will play the ads just fine, but once it gets the episode it just sits there and buffers and buffers and buffers. Devices on the same WIFI have no issues. I am even talking with Hulu suppor about it and of course they are playing dumb about it and just giving me standard troubleshooting. Is this tablet blocked by Hulu somehow because it's chinese made? I don't get a region error, which I can force with proxies and such. I just get buffering and buffering and buffering. Any help would be much appreciated.
I need firmware or update.zip im stuck on boot screen.
Hi! That's my first message here
Just got an Xperia M as gift, and being it my 1st android phone i'm still trying to figure things out.
First things first: phone is successfully rooted, and im navigating into it with root explorer
My problem:
i have little free space left (80megs) , and got a pair of big games which managed to download themselves on the phone, but refused to install (dead trigger 2, 250megs)
This mean that when i go on the google play store page of that app i get directly the "install" button, so the game .apk must be somewhere on the phone storage.
Where is it located?
Where does google play store store the downloaded .apk files before installation?
I tried to look at the locations cited in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1699698
but couldnt find anything, so i guess Sony must have moved that cache folder somewhere else on the phone.
Does anyone know the exact location?
Thanks in advance for the answer

What on earth are you talking about
1 - its not a random repo - its a backup of my setup which includes all the best & most common repos and add-ons - install on a fresh version of kodi and you will have pretty much everything setup in a few mins ready to go - saves you adding every repo manually & installing everything yourself
2 - I'm not a random user - I'm a recognised contributer to xda - I post useful & meaning stuff
If you choose not to use it or its not something you need just move on please
I didn't see your post count, so sorry about that.
BUT, people need to stop replying "if you don't like it, move along." It's a discussion board after all. EVERYTHING should be checked for validity, not just taken as word of God

Indeed that's why you should try it before commenting or judging
I'm all up for discussion but I don't like things like this is better than that or negative comments which aren't constructive eg doesn't work as the user hasn't said why or given any information about errors and so on so it's not a useful comment
thank you for this quick set up
Can't get this to push
Sorry, new user here and I can't get this to work. I'm connected and trying to push the backup.zip file from my Mac, but I keep getting an error message. It says the file "does not contain AndroidManifest.xml"
What am I doing wrong?
***Update***
I figured it out, I was trying to install and not push. I'm in the process of restoring now. The only piece of information that was missing here is to allow hidden files to be viewed in the settings "Before you can see hidden files such as .xbmc (files prefixed with a period are considered hidden), you need to enable showing them in Settings > Appearance > File Lists, "
nice work this has saved me loads of time
Or..you could go to "System", then "File Manager", "Add Profile" and type URL..
http://upgrades.montrealandroidtv.com
Save as .AndroidTV
Then go to System, Add Ons and then Install From ZIP and click on .Androidtv
And you got everything lol

Has anyone else had issues with this backup and or has your issue been resolved? I am deleting my current build tonight (Animal Kodi on Isengard RC2) to install the nightly and this backup. Not sure what I am in for, but as we are running on the same hardware, FireTV, I figured it's worth a shot. Worst case scenario, uninstall. Thanks for sharing!!
Please tell me how to get the backup.zip to my Ftv....I am on a mac running adbfire. I run the push option and the file must be too large because it ends up failing. I tried Firefox and when I get to the mediafire page i get an error about not having something to download it. I can find a way to get the file moved.
you need to install/open Kodi before you send that Zip file(to build file system so you can find it later...duh), currently trying out a few options will report back
Will this method work for the Fire Stick also
And is it the latest version of Kodi?

Hey everybody. I'm new at this and I'm stuck on step 12, choosing the destination for USB/SDCARD. How do I find the "location you placed the backup.zip"? I've done steps 1-11 described but don't know where the backup.zip file is. Is it in one of the blue folders (External storage, extUsb, Root filesystem)?
I know it sounds stupid but I just bought my FTV yesterday and Kodi 15.0 was the first thing I sideloaded. Thanks in advance.

You need to push (using adb) the backup.zip file onto the Fire. Use one of the apps on here to do it - adbFire worked for me.
The only addon I could get live streams for any USA channels to work was the USTVNow addon and those are only the major networks like ABC/CBS/FOX/NBC/PBS. Has anyone else had success with any of the other addons included with this for live streams?

Same Boat as you I have sideloaded the backup to my sdcard, it will show if I go to install from zip under addons. As soon as I go to the wizard the backup file does not exist.
Hi Chaps....
Honestly didn't know where else to go for help on this one...
First off.... I've been happily playing DT2 with my amazon controller since I first got my Firetv box (non rooted) v 51.1.6.3,.... right up until today,... when i was met with "Please update your application with a new version" and I was quickly kicked back to the fire os screen. I tried contacting madfinger games but it seems they have dropped windows and Amazon support. Ages ago I had moved a lot of my apps to an sd card,... but due to DT2 writing to the card a lot it became corrupted... so i reinstalled it to the firetv box then moved it to the sd card, backed it up to my pc and then put it back on to the firetv. (hope your still with me).
I just wanted to know if it would be possible to sideload the latest version 2-1.2.0 onto the firetv box.
I really don't understand why they dropped support for amazon because it ran like a dream on my box. (also lost 2400 in gold as well).
I noticed that the original DT2 that i backed up was an apk that was just over 488mb in size,... but the new apk that i've downloaded is only 25mb. (I'm still in the process of downloading the OBB data files, although I don't know if they will be of much use.
Is this just a waste of time chaps or does anyone know if i can get this to work.
I'm okay with adb push pull, ect... so just need to know if it'll work.
really appreciate any help as playing a game on a tv is a hell of a lot better than burning my eye sockets out on a monitor.... lol
I have absolutely no idea how i done this, but i'll explain as best i can.
I uninstalled DT2,... luckily its still in the cloud if it all goes belly up. I then installed apps2fire on my phone and downloaded DT2.
I then sent the main apk to my firetv. (probably went wrong here) but i ran the apk.... DT2 started to run but then said that it needed to download some files (around 250mb) but failed with an error code of "Download Failed Because The Resources Could Not Be Found".
Unaware of what this meant i then managed to locate the obb files on my file and wrote down the name of the folder they were in.
using es file explorer i created the same named folder in the same place on the firetv.
I then created another folder called dt2 on the phone and moved the obb file into it. I then used apps2fire and located to obb file and sent it to the firetv. so far so good. next problem was "where was the obb file". I managed to locate it, but only after i changed the folder view in es file explorer. I then copied and pasted the obb into the folder i created ealier within the obb folder.
I then ran DT2 again, but this time is said that it required files from the google playstore. I had a choice for the software to download what it needed and I let it do it's thing.
This time when I ran DT2 it started playing the intro... I skipped all the first parts so that i could log back in with my own details.
This time the game ran but the images look different to the original firetv version. Don't get me wrong, they look great. plus the amazon controller works perfectly.
I then closed the game.
when I went to go back to play it, the icon said that there was an update available.... (I had already gone through this once before, and it never worked).. but this time it did. and the xmas version is now installed.
This was a rough way of doing things, but i did some google searches and used details from these sites... (hope i can post these)....
https://www.reddit.com/r/fireTV/comments/2g7cgy/how_would_i_go_about_sideloading_a_game_that_has/
http://www.aftvnews.com/sideload/
http://filehex.com/dead-trigger-2/
http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?8829-obb-files-and-dead-trigger-2
all of this was done legally using programs available on firetv and an android phone. no other apk's or obbs were used.
Hope this helps in some way,....
seems I was a little too quick to say it was working...... as soon as i went to play in a tournament the start button had become greyed out.
but the firetv game controller still worked and by pressing "B" i was about to back out of the locked screen.
Also the "there is an update available" has returned to the main dt2 icon, but it always fails right at the very end of the loading bar.
I managed to play the game for about an hour and then tried the tournament since then its been very buggy.
Would it be anything to do with google play services chaps?
I just got my Sony Ericsson Xperia play and I think i got scammed. (I am a noob to computer things and tech in general so im sorry. I also am young and have no idea whats happening.) So first off, I try and root this, and it doesnt work, it says on Flashtool, {Part 1 of rooting failed, deleting and trying again} or something like that. Also it is a R800i model, but is Verizon, idk if that is supposed to be correct but i though R800i was for At&t. Also im trying to get games but they all fail, i have to get apks but people keep saying to put them in system/apps, which idk where that is on my SD card. I go to my Games file in the SD and see nothing in there, nothing at all. When i try and put my crash bandicoot apk in the game folder, i try and drag it in there and it wont let me, like it doesnt drop in the folder. I Dont know if im just a dumb kid or my Xperia Play is a fake, but i need serious help.
It's been like 20 days since you asked and I hope if you haven't figured it out on your own, that you at least didn't sold it because owning a Xperia Play in 2023 is just based. And there are no fakes.
How do you know it's a Verizon Play, just because of the logo? If you bought it from AliExpress recently, they are refurbished and matched with random shells (we used to have more Plays with a shell without carrier logos afaik but that's a little more rare now). It might be a R800i (carrier unlocked) inside, with a R800x (Verizon) shell.
Check the wiki in here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/xperiaplay/comments/ktz8hx
it literally has all the practical steps you need to follow to install ADB, fastboot and USB drivers, flashing kernels, recoveries and systems, sideloading apps and games... I sent a link to a page that has a link to the wiki, because this page has more useful stuff such as a link to a Discord server with other Xperia Play owners.
There's some stuff you might need to know first tho:
After you have installed ADB, fastboot, the drivers on you computer, unlocked the bootloader, flashed a neat custom kernel, recovery and ROM (I recommend the LuPuS kernel, TWRP and NXT Gaming respectively - bonus with NXT is that you don't need to root it), you'll get to the step of sideloading apps.
To install games, please don't install them to the internal storage even if you had to do it to save your life (that's "/data/app" at the root of the internal storage, because "/system/app" is for system apps... as the path name implies, and it's also at the root of internal storage).
Also don't mind the paths, you'll never need to put APKs there manually, if you install them (like you install any APK in any Android phone) that's where they go to behind the curtains and you don't really need to understand it, unless you want to ofc. Just in case you don't know how to install APKs the normal way, well, that wiki's got your back.
Normal apps like, idk, a terminal emulator, a file manager, you can install to the internal storage (that is, just install and forget about it). For games, you'll want to install them to the SD card (that is, just install them but then go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > [game name] > Move to SD card).
The first app you need to install is a file manager, the wiki teaches you how to install ES but I personally prefer FX. You can follow the same steps but just change the file name, and you can download it here: https://send.vis.ee/download/e1a641e6ee452023/#2sX0oEiwyUn1ciZKc7pAYQ - expires in 3 days.
And to install games, it goes beyond installing their APKs. You'll have to place certain files in certain folders (on the SD card), sometimes it's easier like with Crash Bandicoot, sometimes it's Dark Souls-hard like with some EA and Gameloft games... for that, you can ask for help in the Discord. They also have a lot of game links there.
